He's like the Carlos Mencia of atheism. All of his angles of reasoning were swiped from Christopher Hitchens.

[–]BritishHobo 3 points4 points ago

At least Carlos Mencia makes a variety of derivative jokes. pretty much all Gervais does is repeat 'The idea of a God is stupid and so are Christians' on Twitter. Very occasionally he puts out a sound-bite that sounds profound but is really just a bit of comedy that says nothing of any worth. He's treated as some really influential atheist, but he's limited to mocking the basic concepts of Christianity, he deals with no other religions, and he has absolutely nothing of worth to say about the real-world effects of Christianity.

So true. While logic wasn't exactly the most sought-after skill of the dark ages, things are getting better. Not good, but better.

So why do i HAVE to love him? ARE YOU TRYING TO CONVERT ME?

[–]Oy23oy 1 point2 points ago

I read the last part in his high pitched winging voice.

[–]nsroach 1 point2 points ago

Just because I agree with Gervais on this point does not mean that he's not a twat. :/

[–]rhymes_with_banker 1 point2 points ago

I still think he's a dick

I think they would throw you off a building, but at least it would prove it one way or the other.

Apparently I have to love him over and over again for the same quote from 2 years ago.

This is known as the "Affirmative's Burden," and is one of the first things taught in my high-school debate class.

That class has taught me more than most any other classes; far beyond the public speaking and logical fallacies.

Am I the only one sick of the guy? You're an atheist. We get it. Me too. Quit being an attention whore troll and fuck off.

[–]jayssite 2 points3 points ago

It's like you didn't even care what he said. If the quote was unattributed, you probably wouldn't have a problem with it.

[–]dhoops11 1 point2 points ago

He's probably only quoted about his atheism because people ask him about it in the first place. I doubt he just does press releases saying stuff like this.

He might decide to put atheistic stuff on his twitter account but that's his personal page.

[–]grippage 1 point2 points ago

What if I told you that atheism is a minuscule part of his comedy routine and of his writing?

[–]BritishHobo 2 points3 points ago

Then you'd be lying?

[–]bradsingh 1 point2 points ago

Yes. The rest of it is dedicated to jokes about fat people, how hilarious this mentally ill woman at a concert was, something vaguely similar to Louis CK's work, 'ironic' repetition of how many awards he's won, and material he's nicked word-for-word from his friend Karl Pilkington.

[–]GenkiElite 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for that one Morpheus, but the fact is no one is posting his other comedy. It's just his broken record atheist bits.

[–]realfuzzhead 0 points1 point ago

biggest smile ran across my face while reading this. Is but a good age to be an atheist

WHAT?!? RICKY GERVAIS? BURDEN OF PROOF? NEVER HEARD OF IT. SO ORIGINAL, UPVOTE!!!

Because Bertrand Russell hasn't expressed it clearly enough with his teapot argument some 60 years ago, and nobody has heard of it until this 247th-repost brought it to r/atheism, reason's last internet fortress.
