Is it really that hard to boil water?

[–]UseWhatNameSW 25 points26 points ago

I boil my own water over a wood stove using pots I made myself. Doesn't everyone?

[–]CassandraVindicated 33 points34 points ago

You didn't forge the stove? Fucking consumers.

[–]ratlater 9 points10 points ago

Stove?! Pots?! Look, how goddamn hard is it to construct a simple scaffold out of twigs and bark to suspend a series of oak leaves over an open fire in which to boil your water?

I mean, come on. Kids today, with their metallurgy and boxed fire. Next you'll be whining about 'proper ventilation' and 'indoor plumbing'.

[–]NewAlt 2 points3 points ago

You don't pocket boil?

[–]hashpling 1 point2 points ago

I don't boil anything that casts a shadow.

[–]legalizemarijuana 9 points10 points ago

Not to mention that since they have already shut off the reservoir and are draining it, the faucet likely does not have the contaminated water running in it any more. They can't tell everyone that though.

[–]OduseiHillsdale 5 points6 points ago

Must be nice to have healthcare.

[–]CausticRain11Eastmoreland 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I think they have back-up reservoirs for situations just like this.

[–]mackstann 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, when you're out and about. A lot of places aren't serving drinks like they usually do.

[–]ixregardoSW 0 points1 point ago

I was thirsty and wanted cold water... and a container for it that wasn't a pot with no lid. But I was too late o_o

[–]IATEBACON 17 points18 points ago

I work at a Safeway in Tigard. The manager of the nearest Regal Cinemas came in and asked for every single 20 oz Coca Cola product so that they could still sell soda at the cinema, and I had to find them all for her and box them up. I thought it was just an unlucky day for me, until she gave me two free tickets to see The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX!

[–]AceTracerGoose Hollow 6 points7 points ago

She probably resold them at a 500% markup; I'd have asked for a cut.

There are enough drug shows on TV that you should know how this works.

[–]cjfreddy 9 points10 points ago

Was just there. I swear they had every available employee restocking the shelves like mad with gallons of water.

Personally, I feel like this was just a plan by Safeway to sell all their extra water...

[–]BanditoRojo 7 points8 points ago

Next week, beer tanker blows and only supply is at downtown Safeway ... many will die in the scuffle for beer bottles.

[–]soylent_commentsHosford-Abernethy 8 points9 points ago

What is that picture actually of?

[–]danielsound 11 points12 points ago

Its call a "wall of death". Its something that punk and metal bands do at concerts. During a break in a song, the lead singer will try to split the mosh pit in half and then as the song starts back in, everyone will rush at each-other. You can see a video of this gif here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EORH8Nx6FHU

When i was much younger and stupider, i used to go to shows that did this. It is quite a rush. I broke my wrist doing this. stupid. stupid 19 year old me.

[–]soylent_commentsHosford-Abernethy 1 point2 points ago

Ah, that makes sense. It looked vaguely like a giant mosh pit, I'd just never seen something like that. Thanks!

[–]CassandraVindicated 2 points3 points ago

That or something out of Braveheart.

[–]budgeroo 1 point2 points ago

It's ok, stupid 19 year old me broke part of my braces clean off during a concert once. Had I not had braces, it would have been a broken tooth.

[–]lindseypdx 0 points1 point ago

i would think more than your wrist should have been broken.

[–]Timtankard[S] 1 point2 points ago

No clue, found it by googling 'crowd fight gif'

[–]soylent_commentsHosford-Abernethy 1 point2 points ago

Huh. Well, thanks for the answer!

[–]stratford 4 points5 points ago

What happened? Someone shit in the big toilet on the hill?

[–]krackhamNW 4 points5 points ago

[–]Annyeongbluth 1 point2 points ago

You are over-encumbered, better get rid of some bent tin cans.

[–]JimmyMcShiv 0 points1 point ago

You sir, you are my hero.

[–]BackOff_ImAScientistTigard 2 points3 points ago

Everyone should save themselves the trouble and just pull a Bear Grylls and drink their own piss.

[–]TheCrimsonKing 1 point2 points ago

Are Britta and Pure filters not good enough?

[–]hotbreadz 17 points18 points ago

They do not remove e coli

[–]TheCrimsonKing 1 point2 points ago

Good to know.

[–]youcaughtafish 6 points7 points ago

water drinking specialist here. Those filters remove heavy metals from your water. Contaminated water is probably referring to bacteria. Boiling water kills the bacteria within it.

So no. Britain don't do shit

[–]princess_headband 14 points15 points ago

I don't know, they make a pretty good tea.

[–]TheCrimsonKing 11 points12 points ago

Damnit, Britta is the worst!

[–]withoutamartyrDowntown 12 points13 points ago

The at&t of filters

[–]TheCrimsonKing 1 point2 points ago

Best joke of the entire series.

[–]Celsius1414 0 points1 point ago

What's wrong with Brita?

[–]pleasekillmiBuckman 0 points1 point ago

You Britta'd your spelling of "dammit," dammit.

[–]DeadRat 6 points7 points ago

So no. Britain don't do shit

OG patriot.

[–]lightninhopkinsBrentwood-Darlington 1 point2 points ago

What does a water drinking specialist do? Do you teach people the proper method of drinking water? ;-)

[–]elmonoenano 3 points4 points ago

Works with the former cast of Airplane!? http://youtu.be/pl4plPGRG8o

[–]masgrada 0 points1 point ago

You'll need a UV light "filter" to accomplish that.

[–]jshads010 1 point2 points ago

So glad I have a well.

[–]IdiderusPortsmouth -1 points0 points ago

so random contaminates can work their way into your source and you'll not have the Water Bureau testing your water four times a day? And when a problem does arise, YOU have to drain the well, remove contamination vector, clean and disinfect, then refill and monitor for cleanliness until such time as your team of scientists determine that the water is safe for human consumption...

[–]jshads010 1 point2 points ago

How often does that happen? Probably not as often as people poop into your reservoir.

[–]lychee-twistHollywood 1 point2 points ago

I drink the tap water. We'll see how this goes.

To be fair, I drank 30 oz of the stuff before the warning got out so I figured, eh, if I'm going to get sick, that would have done it. Might as well hydrate before skrewting it out if it's going to happen.

[–]NightlotusHillsdale 6 points7 points ago

I drank a glass of water right after I read the announcement, because I fed it to my cats without thinking, and I want to have advance warning if they are gonna get sick. The things I do for my cats @_@

[–]mellysoup 0 points1 point ago

We do it 1890's up here in the SW, we boil it.

[–]someguynamedgWoodstock 0 points1 point ago

My mom just came into town to visit and is staying in a hotel downtown. They gave her 3 bottles of water and then directions to the nearest store.

covering a res is not exactly a quick and cheap fix. Also, it's water. Things poop in it and lots of stuff dies in there. Not sure why, but they freak out over the smallest contamination, even though the water is filtered and treated after the res and before going into municipal lines.

Nov 2009 incident was a guy got caught peeing into the multimillion-gallon reservoir.

[–]suddenlyturgid 0 points1 point ago

even though the water is filtered and treated after the res and before going into municipal lines.

Nope. The reservoirs are finished drinking water. There might be some filtration between the res and faucet, but there is definitely not any further treatment.

[–]someguynamedgWoodstock 0 points1 point ago

I hope you are joking about the city fighting the feds on this same damn thing.

[–]bettseDowntown 0 points1 point ago

happens so often

I've lived on the west side for the last 3 years and this is the first boil alert I've experienced.

I couldn't find any news stories about one last year, but in 2009 there was one: http://blog.oregonlive.com/nwheadlines/2009/11/todays_headlines_portland_issu.html "The bureau issued its first-ever boil-water alert Saturday"
