It's 2am and the rest of the house is asleep. FUCK IT BROWNIES.

[–]abasss 73 points74 points ago

2am brownies?

[–]Johnnycakess 93 points94 points ago

I'm in the mood for chili

[–]spaceye 75 points76 points ago

Don't spill any on yourself or you might need ice soap.

[–]karmapopsicle 57 points58 points ago

Nope. Chuck Testa.

[–]cbs5090 17 points18 points ago

Damn. Pulled that one from about a year ago.

[–]karmapopsicle 17 points18 points ago

Interestingly it was originally posted a month after the ice soap post. Even more interestingly the original video was uploaded the same day as the ice soap post.

[–]Aston_Martini 4 points5 points ago

BEEEP BEEP BEEP

"Ughh... What was that noise? UGH. tehxen's MAKIN MICROWAVE BROWNIES AGAIN."

[–]sneezylee 4 points5 points ago

NOT IN THIS OLE HOUSE! Microwave sounds like a jet turbine and a 60's Buick car door when you shut the door. And it cuts off the internet too!

FUCK IT....I'll use the oven!

[–]V835 105 points106 points ago

I had no idea wolframalpha could do that, awesome!

[–]xyroclast 66 points67 points ago

"calories in a cubic light year of butter" was a popular one going around reddit for awhile there

[–]daren_sf 62 points63 points ago

5,800,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 calories.

Absolutely delicious with a Diet Pepsi!

[–]xyroclast 34 points35 points ago

Oh, good call on the Diet Pepsi! Wouldn't want to be unhealthy or anything!

[–]draw_art 20 points21 points ago

deep fried diet pepsi.

[–]dspeyer 2 points3 points ago

Check the mass, though. About 1020 times the Chandrasekhar limit. It won't stay butter long enough to eat.

What does happen to chemical potential energy during black hole collapse?

[–]MysticKirby 12 points13 points ago

This made me lol, i definitely needed that.

[–]WalterFStarbuck 95 points96 points ago

Wolfram Alpha should be its own LPT. It will do everything. If or when you go into upper level college/graduate math courses, it's often the only way to figure out things if you have a shitty professor.

[–]DidntSeeYou 14 points15 points ago

Which graduate math courses are you taking? Wolfram Alpha might be good but it can't help you with proofs, and most of my courses and research involve specialized packages for my subfield of math.

Which is not to say I don't use it to prep for the classes I'm TAing (Checking my work before I start grading when I don't bring my answer book home)

[–]WalterFStarbuck 9 points10 points ago

Fuck proofs. I'm in engineering so all the math I've taken is at least somehow applicable to real life -- PDEs, Complex Analysis, Calculus of Variations, and so forth. (We actually still have to do proofs once in a while, but we hate them and I avoid them)

When your professer is insufferably useless and keeps assigning problems that don't have a solution, it helps to have an independent source either agree or disagree with you when you get a nonsensical answer or one that explodes into something that would take pages just to copy down.

In everyday use, I find it indispensable for conversions, checking integrals and derivatives, getting things like the series representation of a function, etc... It's not infallible and it requires an understanding of what's going on, but it's an excellent tool for checking yourself or getting to a quick solution when you've got other things to worry about (i.e. the math is leading you to something else like building a part).

[–]scrociopox 11 points12 points ago

upper level college/graduate math courses

Fuck proofs

these two things make no sense together

[–]wheresbicki 6 points7 points ago

Proofs are painstakingly awesome.

[–]Thaumimicus 5 points6 points ago

My personal tutors introduced me to WolframAlpha when I started my degree, and it's been getting me through troublesome calculus et al. ever since.

[–]notsurewhatiam 1 point2 points ago

Still can't believe it's still in alpha.

[–]riomhaire 1 point2 points ago

I was once asked as a homework assignment to make a rough estimate of the odds of a neutrino striking a single atom as it passed through the centre of the Earth (turns out it's absolutely tiny, neutrinos are inconceivably small). I made up a quick backoftheenvelope equation for it but then realised I needed to estimate the number of atoms in the Earth for it to work. I wondered how I could work that out (Google for some reason didn't occur to me) and after a minute or two of thinking I just said fuck it and put "number of atoms in the earth" into Wolfram Alpha and it gave me an estimate.

[–]alias777 26 points27 points ago

If you change those commas to plus signs you get the more pertinent result.

[–]DeusFerreus 11 points12 points ago

Also you can add pinch of salt too for complete nutrition information (it recognizes pinch as legal measurement) http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=1%2F4+cup+sugar+%2B+1%2F4+cup+flour+%2B+2+tbsp+cocoa+%2B+2+tbsp+olive+oil+%2B+pinch+of+salt

[–]one_hot_llama 2 points3 points ago

It's 1/16 tsp if you look closely

[–]one_hot_llama 25 points26 points ago

Here's the recipe I use all the time that's only 205 calories.

I previously had been using one similar to the OP's but it made way to much for me to eat and always left me with a stomachache, even after forcing my husband to eat some of it. The one I linked to is the perfect size for one.

[–]roboroller 6 points7 points ago

Chocolate Covered Katie! I love that blog. For someone like me who has a sweet tooth but is super concerned about eating healthier her blog has been a godsend.

[–]one_hot_llama 3 points4 points ago

She's working on a book, in case you didn't know :)

[–]buttercup_mauler 2 points3 points ago

Way to be a spoil sport!

[–]aakaakaak 1 point2 points ago

I was going to try and make Chocolate Salty Balls, but Wolfram Alpha only has chocolate, not unsweetened chocolate...and it totally ignored the 1/2 cup of brandy. :(

[–]mocahante 265 points266 points ago

[–]Rigelface 146 points147 points ago

If you try it again, try my recipe instead. I went through several iterations the first time this recipe went around.

T=Tablespoon

  • 2 T cocoa
  • 4 T Flour
  • 2 T vegetable oil or butter(room temp, or slightly melty)
  • 3 T Sugar (4 if you like them sweet)
  • 2 T Coffee(cold)/Kahlua/Cognac or a mixture of coffee/alcohol. NOT WATER. That's where the rubberyness and flavor dilution happens.
  • Pinch of salt

In a wide/flat mug or small bowl:

If using oil, mix all dry components thoroughly. Add Oil and Liquid and mix thoroughly.

If using butter, mix butter with sugar, then add liquid, then mixture of remaining dry components.

Cook for 1 - 1:20 depending on the power of your microwave. Wait for it to cool afterwards because it's SO FUCKING HOT (especially important if you're high.)

[–]Kyoti 22 points23 points ago

.... I can put coffee....in my brownie?! Two of my greatest loves together!

[–]123456787654321 23 points24 points ago

[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 4 points5 points ago

[–]Rigelface 1 point2 points ago

Excellent! Now you can rule the world.

[–]_DorianGray 3 points4 points ago

This came out great! It looks gross but tastes amazing. I only had buckwheat flour so I used extra sugar to cover the buckwheaty taste. The coffee is a genius idea.

[–]Rigelface 2 points3 points ago

Sweet! Glad it worked out well.

[–]Lmkt 19 points20 points ago

HELLO SIR IF YOU PARDON THE EXTREMELY STUPID QUESTION BUT HOW HIGH MUST THE PILE OF INGREDIENT BE IN THE "TABLESPOON" EXACTLY? BECAUSE THERE MUST BE QUITE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LOW TABLESPOON AND A HIGH. THE CAPS ARE FOR PUNISHING MYSELF FOR ASKING SUCH A TRIVIAL FUCKING QUESTION AT THE AGE OF 24

[–]Rigelface 7 points8 points ago

You are pardoned! Everyone must learn at some point. The volume should be level because you should be using a Tablespoon measure, not a flatware tablespoon_Russian%2520tablespoon.Jpg), as flatware no longer conforms to a standard measure. But as someone pointed out, as long as you are careful, consistent, and add ingredients in the same proportion, it doesn't matter too much what kind of spoon you are using!

[–]squeakyneb 2 points3 points ago

as long as you are careful, consistent, and add ingredients in the same proportion, it doesn't matter too much what kind of spoon you are using!

Bingo. It's all about proportions. You can replace "tablespoon" with "tonka truck" if you should so desire.

Size does sometimes matter when it comes to cooking though. A really big brownie might burn on the outside before the centre even gets warm.

(inb4 "but microwaves cook from the inside out", no they don't, learn about microwave radiation)

[–]ruddelsticks 5 points6 points ago

Where do you see "high" or "low"? If you just mean how much a tablespoon is, just take the back of a straight knife and scrape off the top of the heap in the tablespoon.

[–]Lmkt 5 points6 points ago

Where do you see "high" or "low"?

Nowhere, that is why I'm asking this question

[–]TBizzcuit 1 point2 points ago

Just made this. Waiting for it to cool. Better be delicious!

[–]Daxx22 65 points66 points ago

Nailed it!

[–]Cluster_One 134 points135 points ago

Can't wait for all those "nailed it" pics

[–]del_rio 146 points147 points ago

I've done this before and I confirm it's not very good. It comes out nice-looking, but it's rubbery and dry when it gets to your mouth. I and dozens of commenters on blogs and instructable how-tos had the same exact result.

[–]Rigelface 99 points100 points ago

I've improved the recipe to where it's very edible, has good texture/flavor.

T=Tablespoon

  • 2 T cocoa
  • 4 T Flour
  • 2 T vegetable oil or butter(room temp, or slightly melty)
  • 3 T Sugar
  • 2 T Coffee(cold)/Kahlua/Cognac or a mixture of coffee/alcohol. NOT WATER. That's where the rubberyness and flavor dilution happens.
  • Pinch of salt

In a wide mug or wide, small bowl:

If using oil, mix all dry components thoroughly. Add Oil and Liquid and mix thoroughly.

If using butter, mix butter with sugar, then add liquid, then mixture of remaining dry components.

Cook for 1 - 1:20 depending on the power of your microwave. Wait for it to cool afterwards because it's SO FUCKING HOT (especially important if you're high.)

[–]UserNotAvailable 10 points11 points ago

Just for clarification, since i don't use these units often:

Is a tablespoon just filled to the top of the round area, or is it heaped?

Whenever I have to use spoonfuls, I wonder how full I should make the spoon, and it is easily a 50% difference.

[–]Rigelface 17 points18 points ago

It is filled level. Heaping means you're using more than the indicated measurement. You're using a tablespoon measure, right? I don't think flatware tablespoons conform to the measurement these days.

[–]brbegg 10 points11 points ago

It's all relative if you're using the same type of spoon for all the ingredients.

[–]Rigelface 7 points8 points ago

I just realized this and felt silly! But using flatware does make it extremely difficult to maintain consistent volumes given that those tablespoons are not meant to hold loose ingredients very effectively or in the same volume. It'd be okay for pure liquid measure.

[–]UserNotAvailable 2 points3 points ago

Ahh, i will have to convert it to mm³ since I don't have one of those nifty devices!

However this might explain some of my previous mishaps with recipies!

(As long as I get the proportions right and am roughly in the same ballpark, I guess I will be ok.)

[–]Rigelface 3 points4 points ago

Ah! The internet tells me a US Tablespoon is 15000 mm³.

You could definitely use a measurement that is familiar, and just add the ingredients in the same proportion!

[–]tobiasx 5 points6 points ago

Any substitute for those of us who don't drink coffee or alcohol?

[–]galexanderj 12 points13 points ago

Thank you for the stoner notice. It makes me feel accepted :-)

[–]jmlives27 14 points15 points ago

You messed up somehow, mines pretty good. You may have a crazy good microwave tho

[–]TeaBeforeWar 11 points12 points ago

They may have used an older iteration which called for a whole egg instead of the olive oil, which of course made it turn out rubbery.

[–]Kronos6948 4 points5 points ago

Sounds like it over cooked. Try taking it out early. If the middle looks under done, it should be alright. If that doesn't help, try substituting 1/4 teaspoon of water with oil. Upping the oil will add moistness.

[–]noahjk 1 point2 points ago

Double cooking time, use 50% power on your microwave. Helps retain moisture better

[–]labeille87 1 point2 points ago

Just from looking at the recipe I can understand why it wouldn't be good. olive oil should never be used in desserts. Rigelface has the right idea of using vegetable oil.

[–]ScotteeMC 4 points5 points ago

http://imgur.com/a/pGp64

I didn't have olive oil or coco.

[–]z4cz0r 25 points26 points ago

This is amazing. Thank you so much for this! Nothing better on a dreary, cold, raining New Zealand Sunday afternoon!

[–]akacheese[S] 20 points21 points ago

I'm in Hamilton, and I can confirm this.

[–]z4cz0r 28 points29 points ago

Hamilton?

I'm so sorry.......

[–]akacheese[S] 14 points15 points ago

I appreciate your condolences. Living here is an investment, after all it is the city of the future.

[–]z4cz0r 7 points8 points ago

Absolutely. It is the city of the future, not a city full of chlamydia-ridden farmers and bogans that even West Auckland rejected

:D

I jest. Hamiltron is a lovely place.

[–]Skeletal 2 points3 points ago

It is a bit of a shitty day today isn't it? And it was looking so promising last week, at least I managed to get the laundry done.

[–]farmland_abandon 539 points540 points ago

olive oil?? what the matter with you? use butter or vegetable or coconut oil.. olive oil tastes TERRIBLE in desserts..

[–]Alpha-Leader 240 points241 points ago

Hijacking top comment to say... DO NOT USE YOUR FAVORITE MUG!!! I just spent the last 15 minutes trying to clean what I can only describe as caramel tar out of my favorite coffee cup.

You could probably use some Pam though.

[–]SandRider 27 points28 points ago

I find that a little baking soda takes the most difficult of stains out of mugs.

[–]CatHairInYourEye 21 points22 points ago

I usually use "OJ Simpson's Fantastic Blood Remover". I will give this a try.

[–]Modestjake 5 points6 points ago

Is the fantastic kind better? I felt the regular "OJ Simpson's Blood Remover" was better because it came with a free glove.

[–]Hamchook 4 points5 points ago

Did anybody else read that in Martha Stuart's voice?

[–]emlgsh 59 points60 points ago

I only make my desserts with fresh whale blubber.

[–]dorkus_the_porpoise 7 points8 points ago

I use pure lanolin.

[–]brownestrabbit 4 points5 points ago

I use human baby fat. What of it?

[–]watershot 89 points90 points ago

coconut cannaoil mmmmmm

[–]JERKFACE9000 14 points15 points ago

I like the way you think, sir.

[–]snakebite99 13 points14 points ago

I read that as coconut cannoli and got real excited, thinking it's a real thing. Now I'm sad.

[–]dorjablue 6 points7 points ago

Make it! Post it! Reap karma! God, noob.

[–]mikeyman159 38 points39 points ago

How much butter would one use

[–]etzhadaat 40 points41 points ago

Same amount, 2 tbsp.

[–]ReVo5000 19 points20 points ago

I would recommend using 40% butter 60% vegetable oil

[–]Svelemoe 17 points18 points ago

Jamie Olive disagrees.

[–]riomhaire 5 points6 points ago

Jamie Oliver puts olive oil on everything though.

[–]JERKFACE9000 18 points19 points ago

Just don't use extra virgin. That stuff is for dipping bread and tastes like olives.

[–]kodiakus 38 points39 points ago

I would hope olive oil tastes like olives.

[–]Aston_Martini 51 points52 points ago

Then what do you hope BABY OIL tastes like?

[–]DonPeriOn 9 points10 points ago

Bad choices and regret

[–]wombat_jones 9 points10 points ago

Tastes like someone didn't read the instructions on the label...

[–]z4cz0r 41 points42 points ago

Wrong. This tastes amazing.

[–]coheedcollapse 97 points98 points ago

Just made it with olive oil and I have to agree. Tastes great with frozen blueberries on top.

I'm making a brownie in a mug, for fuck's sake. Not going to be picky about my fat.

[–]IamPegasus 10 points11 points ago

I second this, I'm eating mine right now with powdered sugar on top :3

[–]moonpiedelight 9 points10 points ago

Also just had success with this recipe, decent quality olive oil didn't affect the taste at all. Aces.

Next time I'm going to try adding a little peanut butter.

[–]Catler 7 points8 points ago

[–]brownestrabbit 1 point2 points ago

I came here to make sure everyone understood that olive oil is the WORST oil to use in desserts. Thanks for making my night by posting this 5 hours previous.

I would go with butter, or this blend of coconut and clarified butter (ghee). It fucking rocks my world.

[–]gemcitytiffany 1 point2 points ago

My best carrot cake recipe uses olive oil. Though carrot cake technically is a bit more savory than brownies, I'd still like to think there's a chance it wouldn't be awful. That said, once I read the rest of the ingredients, I have my doubts. I make brownies from scratch a lot and this doesn't look like a great recipe.

[–]jdepps113 17 points18 points ago

There's a 50% chance that I'm going to go try this within the next hour. 100% it's happening within 24 hours.

[–]trujillo1775 14 points15 points ago

So I have 20 seconds to gather and measure all ingredients?

[–]akacheese[S] 5 points6 points ago

Depends how long it takes you to put it in the microwave and press "start". Maybe 17 seconds.

[–]duckfucks 12 points13 points ago

Tastes much better with unsalted butter or coconut oil. And after it's done, slip it out and slice in two. Fill with whatever you like (icecream, nutella, rasberry jam, peanut butter or w/e) Mmmmmm :)

[–]Brandaman 8 points9 points ago

Probably, just put less sugar in.

Edit: Replied to wrong comment

[–]StigmaaH 39 points40 points ago

This is fucking brilliant.

[–]StigmaaH 23 points24 points ago

Here are two that I made about a year and a half ago.

[–]Daxx22 49 points50 points ago

Maybe mix in some viagra next time?

[–]unfriendlyfire 3 points4 points ago

Those look similar to the ones I made - not sure how yours tasted, but mine was kind of airy, not very rich and the texture was kind of pasty :(

[–]StigmaaH 7 points8 points ago

Yes, quite airy. But I was impressed by it, considering it took next to no effort or time!

[–]dumpsztrbaby 49 points50 points ago

READ THIS, MADE IT. I. LOVE. YOU.

THAT IS ALL

[–]filterblox 37 points38 points ago

I've tried this and it tastes terrible.

[–]Rigelface 21 points22 points ago

If you're wiling to try again, try my recipe.

T=Tablespoon

  • 2 T cocoa

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

I just made it, tastes pretty shitty.

[–]vinito 8 points9 points ago

Limited Success

Tasted ok.

[–]no_id_ya 12 points13 points ago

Someone has to do the close enough version of this.

[–]well_golly 16 points17 points ago

If they do it in 2 minutes, it will definitely be a "close enough" version. With 1:40 cook time, you only get 20 seconds to assemble, measure and pour the ingredients.

aaaaaaaannnnndd ... GO!

[–]matrices 6 points7 points ago

Just tried this and my god it actually worked, although I have a few revisions:

  1. Add a bit more salt (2x pinches?)
  2. Don't use Olive oil, Canola oil instead.
  3. Chocolate chips + peanuts are excellent (add less sugar if chips)
  4. Depending on your microwave, 1:40 may be too much. I was happy with 1:25
  5. Do the mixing outside, in a seperate small bowl. Why? It'll let you oil the cup first, so if you desire, you can just turn the cup over on a place and have yourself a 'regular non cup' brownie. Also makes cleaning easier.

[–]kylekestell 5 points6 points ago

[–]TheAgreeableCow 7 points8 points ago

Worked great in a ramekin.

Substituted with vegetable oil, added choc bits and dash of kahlua. Cooked for 2 1/2 mins on medium. Served with whipped cream.

Had ran out of biscuits too, so perfect timing for arvo coffee ;)

[–]matdwyer 13 points14 points ago

When ever I've tried this (or similar microwave recipes) I find the cup ridiculously hard to clean (even after soaking)

[–]abundantplums 14 points15 points ago

Spray it with Pam, or grease it otherwise, just like you would the brownie pan.

[–]akacheese[S] 10 points11 points ago

Baking paper lining the mug might work.

[–]SirNoName 4 points5 points ago

I made this once, and it basically stuck to the mug.
Maybe I'll try again tonight and see if I can do it right...

[–]foofiejnooner 5 points6 points ago

I don't keep powder cocoa in the house all the time, and substitutions?

[–]vijrox 2 points3 points ago

Number 1: don't try Brandaman's suggestion of using hot cocoa powder.

If you like hot cocoa, you should keep cocoa powder around the house. You can make some great hot cocoa with 12 oz milk, 1 1/2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt.

[–]samnnz 4 points5 points ago

no egg?? Try this recipe, it's far superior

* 4 tablespoons flour
* 4 tablespoons sugar
* 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
* 2 tablespoons whisked egg - 1 egg is too much, 1 egg white is too eggy, 1 yolk is too dense, but 2 tblsp is just right!
* 3 tablespoons milk
* 3 tablespoons oil
* 3 tablespoons chocolate chips

If you can't be bothered messing around with the egg then just make a double batch i.e just throw in a whole eg

[–]Ceberus 5 points6 points ago

people, if you had less than stellar results keep in mind the following.

-how/when you add the ingredients matters. Try adding dry then wet ingredients like the directions say.

-when measuring flour: DO NOT PACK IT IN. Use a spoon to stir the flour in its container, then spoon it into the cup and use a knife or any flat even edge to get rid of excess flour. Packing flour will result in too much flour in your batter making your brownie hard and dry.

-DO NOT SKIP THE SALT! the Salt is not there for taste, it's for the chemical reaction that takes place while baking. I can't remember what salt does exactly, but it greatly effects the texture of the brownie.

-Microwaves are different, it may make your brownie cook faster or slower depending the on microwave you have. if you're unsure if your brownie is done take a tooth pick or a butter knife and stick it in the middle of the brownie. if it comes out clean, it's done.

[–]TWITCHAY 94 points95 points ago

Add a gram or two of really finely ground up cannabis for a good 8 hour journey

[–]akacheese[S] 74 points75 points ago

I was thinking about that, but I think you'd have better results if you made it into cannabutter first, then added that instead of oil.

[–]donpapillon 72 points73 points ago

Brb, getting stoned.

[–]xyroclast 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, if you weren't planning on being able to walk for a few hours

[–]akacheese[S] 35 points36 points ago

I'm in a wheelchair, so yeah, might just get legless.

[–]PingofDing 7 points8 points ago

Will the ground up stuff actually work? I can imagine the microwaves wreak havoc ...

[–]mandeer_ 12 points13 points ago

the stuff that gets you high is pretty heat stable, which is why smoking it works. :P

[–]Unfeared 7 points8 points ago

It's actually not. Thc is destroyed at around 200 degrees C, if you were to keep the flame under your weed, you would destroy a big part of it. Microwaving should be fine, the liquid mix shouldnt get above 100 degrees C.

[–]TWITCHAY 4 points5 points ago

Yeah it might work better. I have friends that swear by using olive oil instead of butter though, kinda frying the weed in the oil in a pan and then cooking with it. I've never tried it personally, but they claim it works very well.

[–]dirtydela 2 points3 points ago

higher fat content=more thc.

too high of temps=less thc

[–]etzhadaat 2 points3 points ago

I recommend that for drizzling on a salad or something but olive oil really doesn't mix with sweet things very well. EDIT: Also olive oil has a lower smoke point than butter so it's more difficult to work with.

[–]Russik 17 points18 points ago

Nutmeg works also, but then you get all the throwing up and nausea before you go into a trip, coming down is even worse. There's also a chance you might die. Actually never mind, don't do nutmeg.

Edit: Negative effects of getting high off nutmeg

[–]stayinbed 34 points35 points ago

I'm gonna try that as soon as my banana peel buzz wears off.

[–]jdepps113 8 points9 points ago

Uh, can you elaborate? I have consumed nutmeg many times in various forms as a spice/garnish--and never tripped or been sick.

Do you smoke it? Eat a great deal of it? What's the story here, I've never heard of this.

[–]omnipoopent 16 points17 points ago

You have to eat it. A lot of it. Just getting it down is one of the most awful things I've ever done. And then you have to wait a few hours for it to even kick in.

And then apparently I didn't even eat enough of it because nothing happened.

Oh, being 17.

[–]jdepps113 2 points3 points ago

Hmmmmmm. Is it dangerous?

[–]TWITCHAY 12 points13 points ago

Yup. Nutmeg is a horrible thing. Best description of the effect I've heard is "Like god taking a shit directly on your soul"

[–]Quolli 7 points8 points ago

Ahh the days of making mug cake. I've yet to try this brownie recipe, but there's a pretty sweet 5 minute chocolate mug cake that I can vouch for. It's pretty decent, just make sure you get into the corners of your mug when mixing in the flours.

[–]Fecund_Mule 8 points9 points ago

I just tried this with my 4 year old and 7 year old. They thought it was really fun to mix and said the brownie was awesome.

[–]Aflack246 13 points14 points ago

I have maybe 2 of those ingredients, including the mug.

[–]zippe 20 points21 points ago

LPT: If your recipe is a jpeg, then the food will probably be shit.

Also, if it's a baked good and requires only a microwave to prepare.

Also, if you use olive oil in a fucking dessert.

[–]caveman_rejoice 2 points3 points ago

What kind of flour should you use?

[–]conner1337 2 points3 points ago

anyone know if you cant substitute cocoa powder with hot chocolate mix?

[–]toine55 6 points7 points ago

Cocoa is unsweetened. Hot cocoa mix is sweetened. So I'd imagine you'd have to adjust the sugar level.

[–]F0xism 4 points5 points ago

Great gobs of gooey gumdrops!

I just made two mugs for the boyfriend and I. I only had self rising flour on hand so it came out like a mug of light fluffy chocolate cake. So good.

[–]lanemik 3 points4 points ago

I use melted salted butter instead of olive oil and I omit the dash of salt. Also, I add in a few chocolate chips in the mixture and a few on top once I'm done mixing it.

Sadly, though, since moving from sea level to over 6000 feet in Colorado, I've found this recipe doesn't work as-is. I haven't had the chance to try and modify it, yet.

[–]dougnn55 3 points4 points ago

2 mins! I'm a busy guy. Let me know when there is a 30 sec version.

[–]cank3r 4 points5 points ago

I will give this a try. Edit: Not bad.

[–]pipnestella 2 points3 points ago

My diet just went down the drain.

[–]robotbarista 3 points4 points ago

If you add 1/8 tsp vanilla, dash of instant espresso, and a few semi-sweet chocolate chips, this recipe goes from novelty to legit chocolate goodness.

[–]dontviolate 3 points4 points ago

I put the ice cream in the mix and microwaved it. Nothing seemed wrong with that to me at first...

[–]coreymason 3 points4 points ago

Similar idea, but with Nutella: http://i.imgur.com/aU4RC.jpg

[–]Coolfuckingname 3 points4 points ago

Just for the record, my 6 year old niece taught me this recipe and i promptly named it CHOCOLATE ABOMINATION.

Delicious delicious abomination...

[–]Skyrider09 19 points20 points ago

Does it have to be 100% Natural Spring Water? Can it be just tapwater?

[–]pipeweed 108 points109 points ago

LPT: You can just use tap water instead of 100% Natural Spring Water in mug brownie recipes.

[–]MVolta 16 points17 points ago

this is the real pro tip of the thread

[–]mervynskidmore 48 points49 points ago

You say that but I used tap water and it DESTROYED my microwave. I had to call a guy in and he replaced 3 of the kitchen units around it. He told me it was a common mistake among people getting recipes off the internet and stupidly substituting tap water for 100% Natural Spring Water. I learned the hard way!

[–]akacheese[S] 11 points12 points ago

I'm sure tap water is fine.

[–]FistfulOfPaintballs 2 points3 points ago

Thank you so much for this dorm-friendly recipe.

[–]Jackmangold 2 points3 points ago

As someone who just went to the store and made these brownies: I can confirm their deliciousness. Ice cream is a must because they are quite dry, and cinnamon sugar is also a good addition.

[–]burasto 2 points3 points ago

http://imgur.com/Z3mtv.jpg here's mine, it tastes delicious! (thats powdered sugar, not flour)

[–]GoodguyGerg 3 points4 points ago

Title should have been "How to ruin a mug in 2 minutes"

[–]Lord_Rimbleton 18 points19 points ago

This makes a nasty fucking mix.

Don't waste your time.

[–]RunJun 6 points7 points ago

Obvious I'm sure to the cooks but for everyone else, Nutella doesn't sub out for Cocoa. Doesn't solidify right, I ate it but it feels like it should give me diabeetus or sick.

[–]dramaticstringtheory 4 points5 points ago

As a European, I have never understood the "cup" thing in America. It seems to be tottaly random. Am I wrong?

[–]lanemik 4 points5 points ago

1 cup is 8 ounces or around 240ml (236.6 ml). US or UK recipes that are converted to metric recipes generally just use 250ml instead of a cup and adjust the recipe accordingly, I think. Not too difficult...

[–]Juxxtaposition 1 point2 points ago

Very reminiscent of 2am chile...

[–]eatfreely 1 point2 points ago

Add half and half in that! I makes it taste so much better

[–]jtomatzin 1 point2 points ago

Is there a subreddit for recipes like this?

[–]STYLiNGtooFAST 1 point2 points ago

Can you do this without a microwave?

[–]Tulsakaleb 0 points1 point ago

One of the most helpful LPT I have ever seen... Maybe just because I love brownies so much...

[–]2Fast2Finkel 1 point2 points ago

Saved for college.

[–]Malcolm9806 1 point2 points ago

LPT: dont use the mix for hot chocolate as a substituse for cocoa. They taste nothing alike.

[–]Juru 1 point2 points ago

Does it actually work?

[–]iamnotfromtexas90 0 points1 point ago

um, no. this will be goo. need a pinch of leavening like baking soda/powder. also an egg. notice how it didn't 'grow' and fill the mug. there's even a viral recipe around that puffs up just like im taking about that includes said ings. also use tap water idiots, and olive oil isn't for deserts or baking generally. use 'neutral' oil like standard 'vegetable oil' which, if you look at the ingredients, is SOYBEAN oil. that's called marketing.

[–]kefka900 1 point2 points ago

Thanks! Brownie

[–]negative-D 2 points3 points ago

Sorry, but how is icecream optional?

[–]jesus_swept 1 point2 points ago

I tried this just now. Unfortunately my boyfriend's grandmother made fish-fry and put it in the flour pack. So maybe I'm the idiot because I didn't realize fish-fry looks slightly different than flour, but I just made fish-fry brownies.

I plan to find the actual flour later and make correct brownies, but my tastebuds are too distressed. Oh god, the taste. I've never tasted anything so... oh god.

[–]winesti 1 point2 points ago

Damn. You wouldn't think that the one ingredient I don't have would be Flour. I have freaking cocoa but no flour. Great...

EDIT: Used Whole Wheat Flour instead. Nailed it.

[–]Yatiya 1 point2 points ago

Made this, can confirm it's amazing. Springy and moist, but like cake. =D

[–]rustedarm 1 point2 points ago

GOD BLESS YOU

[–]I_hate_magnets 1 point2 points ago

How could 2,845 people downvote brownies :o

[–]Shelbolovesnate 1 point2 points ago

Just tried this and gave it to my boyfriend. He took one bite and asked me to make him another, and double it. Success, I believe. :)

[–]chicubs3794 1 point2 points ago

Just tried this, can confirm that it works.

[–]brandtftw 1 point2 points ago

How many watts for 1 minute and 40 seconds?

[–]gloomysummer 1 point2 points ago

Put some peanut butter and around two tablespoons of milk in the mixture, and used Milo instead of cocoa powder. Fucking amazing.

[–]nestlewater 1 point2 points ago

You can do this with any cake, it's called a 3 2 1 cake. You get whatever type of cake mix you want and mix it with angel food cake mix. Then put 3 table spoons of that mix in a mug, 2 table spoons of water then put it in the microwave for 1 minute. It's amazing

[–]dyl10 2 points3 points ago

Here is the one I just made: http://imgur.com/a/wShzi

[–]tyrroi 1 point2 points ago

I got a black gooey mess.

[–]whatsgood27 1 point2 points ago

success! now if only i knew how to make ice cream
