that must feel good for the crab

[–]scherzox 143 points144 points ago

It either really feels good or really hurts.

[–]AFRUITPIE 83 points84 points ago

You know that awesome feeling when you get to loosen that tie that's been wrapped too tightly around your neck all day? I imagine it feels like that.

[–]Infectious_Cockroach 58 points59 points ago

I imagine it feels like peeling skin, but all around.

[–]i_no_like_u 42 points43 points ago

I imagine its like peeling off a giant scab.

[–]4_word_replies_only 42 points43 points ago

I'd never go hungry.

[–]wu2ad 15 points16 points ago

Scab, friend, not crab.

[–]0044 9 points10 points ago

He knew

[–]kingdavecako 3 points4 points ago

I imagine it's like getting your dick chomped off and then peeling your skin off from there.

[–]Whitentaco 26 points27 points ago

Why the hell would you imagine that?

[–]YouHadMeAtDontPanic 15 points16 points ago

It's easy if you try.

[–]Mr_Mimiseku 4 points5 points ago

Or dipping your whole body in glue, and then peeling all of it off.

[–]austro-american 3 points4 points ago

If it hurt to do, the crab wouldn't do it. That's how pain works.

[–]MrTulip 18 points19 points ago

yeah, just like childbirth

[–]Berwickmex 4 points5 points ago

Unless the crab's a masochist. you never know.

[–]SpermWhale 13 points14 points ago

A bra that you took off after a long day.

[–]thegreatwhitemenace 4 points5 points ago

i never realized how easy it was to fap to this gif until you said that

[–]Sindelian 11 points12 points ago

Is feel like it'd be like taking off the shoes you've been wearing all day that kill your feet.

And you feel the cool air on your feet.

[–]surrealasm_atwork 1 point2 points ago

except that when you remove your tie you don't become extremely vulnerable until your new tie is back on.

[–]Moara7 4 points5 points ago

Sometimes they don't do it right, and they end up breaking off a leg and leaving it in the old shell I can;t imagine that feels all that great.

[–]Perryn 2 points3 points ago

Bit of both?

[–]MF_Kitten 2 points3 points ago

It probably doesn't feel very special, but i imagine the crab is kinda anxious while it's waiting for the new hard shell to grow. They're a bit soft in that period in-between, so if something wanted to eat it, it would be a nice soft meal to chew.

[–]TheSadNick 1 point2 points ago

It would be like growing for the human body. Your bones grows faster than your body can extend. That's what happends for the crab, except it get's trapped inside it's own shell until it finally cracks and it can leave it.

[–]jheregpip 31 points32 points ago

this pleases the crab

[–]Cactrot 8 points9 points ago

It actually does massive damage to this enemy crab.

[–]dylbrochill 69 points70 points ago

Ah yes, the molting process. This is how crabs grow. They start to absorb sea water which inflates them, causing their shell to break. When a crab is harvested during this process, it produces the product we know as soft-shell crab.

[–]Reingding13 18 points19 points ago

Many spiders do this as well. That's why we sometimes see what appears to be dead, wrinkled up spiders. It's not them, it's just their exo-layer.

[–]dingusmonger 25 points26 points ago

wish i never heard this.... now i wont be able to sleep calmly at night

[–]SolidFoot 11 points12 points ago

When a spider is harvested during this process, it produces the product we know as "soft-shell spider."

[–]bigroblee 2 points3 points ago

Or, as I heard them called in a recent thread, spider pants. I found one when I cleaned out my garage this week that was quite large. I also found a thick web that had, I shit you not, what appeared to be desiccated baby mice in it. I hope whatever left those behind is long gone. I did kill one spider that was about three inches including legs; the body was probably an inch from fangs to web shooter.

[–]sekai-31 14 points15 points ago

So it's similiar to a snake shedding its skin?

[–]Nioxic 7 points8 points ago

Geckos too

but i dont think they absorb sea water

[–]tehreal 15 points16 points ago

They do if you pickle them right.

[–]krillskrills 1 point2 points ago

sort of! all Arthropods lose their entire exoskeleton periodically! it's a little more than just skin.

[–]lurk2derp 12 points13 points ago

The crabs and shrimp I had in my reef tank used to do this. At first I thought the shrimp died, but then I saw him chilling under a rock. It's insane because it looks exactly like the living one with tentacles antennas and all.. just hollow.

[–]biggerthancheeses 23 points24 points ago

tentacles

I don't think those are shrimp you have.

[–]bigroblee 16 points17 points ago

Baby Cthulhu?

[–]lurk2derp 9 points10 points ago

Fuck...

[–]Agamand 242 points243 points ago

[–]JeremyJustin 1 point2 points ago

This is my Crabby-Wabby detector. It does ding when there's stuff.

[–]Joshknightmare 11 points12 points ago

Didn't you see that episode of Spongebob?

[–]ofd1197 5 points6 points ago

It's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

[–]Pinneh 2 points3 points ago

Seems like a job for the doctor.

[–]Dakota47 1 point2 points ago

Molting much like snakes.

[–]PMacLCA 1 point2 points ago

[–]ferrariletigre 40 points41 points ago

That really gave me the heebie jeebies, man.

[–]AmberCutie 19 points20 points ago

Me too! But mainly because I had to keep repeating to myself "it's just a crab, not a spider, it's just a crab..."

[–]sideberns 14 points15 points ago

[–]Grubersauce 16 points17 points ago

Shit. I've been holding Japanese spider crabs wrong my entire life.

[–]bigroblee 3 points4 points ago

I thought you picked them up like kittens, by the scruff on the back of their head.

[–]kpingvin 3 points4 points ago

do not want!

[–]veritablerapscallion 4 points5 points ago

I'm totally afraid of crabs ever since my mom chased me around the beach with a claw. She was pulling the tendon so it would snap at me. I was three. shudder

[–]bloodfyr 1 point2 points ago

Me too. It was making me uncomfortable...until the explosion of legs. Then I had to look away. Things with more than four legs really, really freak me out and I don't know why. Spiders, crab, lobsters, millipedes...ugh.

[–]Masshole3000 59 points60 points ago

"I'm getting cooked how?! deploy decoy and bounce!"

[–]marcus_ivo 21 points22 points ago

Here's the original video

Out of the shell and into my stomach whilst covered in delicious butter.

[–]Dazanan 13 points14 points ago

[–]Cinnadots 6 points7 points ago

Why do I always click anyways... that was awful

[–]Dabamanos 2 points3 points ago

I just love the 'ooga booga!' thing the legs do as soon as their free, as if the spider knows how hideous that all was and just wants to rub it in.

[–]Iamsqueegee 17 points18 points ago

[–]postive_scripting 7 points8 points ago

can someone reverse the gif please?

[–]PUSClFER 20 points21 points ago

[–]MJCPRODUCTIONZ 19 points20 points ago

I now fear a crab will try to penetrate me at the beach.

[–]PUSClFER 6 points7 points ago

And now so do I. Thanks a lot.

[–]tNisu 2 points3 points ago

"Take me to your people"

[–]I_read_this_comment 1 point2 points ago

well, isn't the penetration an essentail part for making crab people?

[–]beat_pan 5 points6 points ago

BATTLE ARMOR ACQUIRED

[–]Asdayasman 1 point2 points ago

Oh jesus why.

[–]MeesterAndrew 16 points17 points ago

That's that Zoidberg shit.

[–]mikewhy 2 points3 points ago

It was getting a little cramped in there so I molted, why not?

[–]McMurphyLives 13 points14 points ago

Jimmies rustled.

[–]zombarista 5 points6 points ago

Technically, not a shell, but an exoskeleton. Shed every so often when the crab needs to grow.

Hermit crabs will burrow for weeks while they undergo this process. During this time, the other hermit crabs are likely to kill it because they want to eat the rotting flesh of their comrade. Watching a hermit crab change shells is a completely different experience.

Watch the following video. The hermit crab is very picky about new shells, and sizes up potential new shells very discerningly. It measures the opening with it's big pincher, and makes sure the inside surface is smooth.

[–]ToastyRaichu 5 points6 points ago

you know how when glue dries on your skin you can peel it off? Imagine diving into a tub of glue and then waiting. Then, the "rebirthing". Peeling all that glorious dry glue off.

[–]Kuby 3 points4 points ago

Freshest softshell crab ever!

[–]spartiecat 3 points4 points ago

soft shell is best crab

[–]SpookySparker 3 points4 points ago

More awesome than WTF. Crabs are cool :D

[–]cleverbastard 4 points5 points ago

All crabs grow and moult out of their shells.

Interestingly;

Crabs that have lost legs can regenerate them over time. The leg breaks off at a special joint. Before molting, a new limb bud, with all the remaining leg segments, grows out of the joint. After molting, the new leg is smaller than the others. The crab needs three molts to grow a leg back to its normal size. Old crabs, or those that are not molting regularly, may never grow their legs back to full size.

[–]Sokonomi 10 points11 points ago

We enjoy taking our pants off at night, imagine how this ten legged beast must feel squeezing out of a tight boney shell. Oh sweet jesus

[–]exildur01 10 points11 points ago

A crab within a crab. Crabception.

[–]yfrag 3 points4 points ago

This is a Japanese Spider Crab and they get much MUCH bigger. I've seen them do this while i worked at a sea life centre. The shells they leave behind are creepy as fuck. We had one sitting in the break room for a few days.

Sadly they would not give it to me for practical jokes.

[–]Karma_Illusionist 1 point2 points ago

I saw a mudcrab the other day ...

[–]ZeronicX 1 point2 points ago

i thought another one wasd coming out, like a cell

[–]Frankentim_the_crim 1 point2 points ago

do all crabs do this?

[–]teknoire7 1 point2 points ago

Armor abs krabs ?

[–]PapaSmiff 1 point2 points ago

[–]Cross88 1 point2 points ago

So it looks like the crab's new legs didn't come out of the old legs. Do crabs grow their next set of legs curled up under their torso?

[–]TaxCunts 1 point2 points ago

I totally expected something much more WTF worthy. Now Im sad.

[–]DaystarEld 1 point2 points ago

My mind still hasn't mastered scientific detachment...

cracks open, begins to emerge

"Hmm, that's interesting, it's some kind of molting proc-"

legs begin to writhe out

"AH! AHHH! AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

[–]andrewdance 1 point2 points ago

the gif makes it look like once he's out of his shell he's like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING HARGARGBLBLBLBLBLB"

[–]nomofica 1 point2 points ago

This is WTF worthy?

[–]oalsaker 1 point2 points ago

I think this is the source video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgCDcobtZHs

[–]shagner 1 point2 points ago

Oh how I wish crabs would do this for me when I'm trying to eat them.

[–]hkckoo 4 points5 points ago

damn nature, you way scary.

[–]bob_lob_law_ 1 point2 points ago

[–]talitus 1 point2 points ago

Is this the current state of WTF? Nature and stuff? Cause this isn't WTF. At all.

[–]justinsidebieber 8 points9 points ago

I am sorry, there are not enough mutilated bodies to go around every day.

[–]talitus 5 points6 points ago

WTF doesn't have to be mutilated bodies. But a crab molting? That's just nature. Shit's beautiful.

[–]poizan42 2 points3 points ago

I was about to say the same thing. Sure some stuff in nature is WTF worthy, but animals molting? It's not like it's something rare or anything.

[–]talitus 1 point2 points ago

Next thing you know there will be dandruff and shedding animals on WTF.

[–]cscott5288 0 points1 point ago

I was fishing for blue crabs last weekend and caught one of these guys. I was like what the fuck is this? Does anyone know what kind of crab this is?

[–]Ipconfigall 0 points1 point ago

i expected him to be waving a Rainbow flag

[–]Meriis 0 points1 point ago

My face involuntarily made a lopsided O when I watched it. I didn't even think that was possible.

[–]KingTurd 0 points1 point ago

[–]TAKES_SHIT_SERIOUSLY 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, if you're a crab. No one on here is a crab.

[–]Sarahmint 0 points1 point ago

[–]cryingblackman 0 points1 point ago

[–]Animagrin 0 points1 point ago

[–]junboslice 0 points1 point ago

[–]freeq84 0 points1 point ago

How to "Shit" Yourself...

[–]duncan12457 0 points1 point ago

Think about it, you won't have to deshell the crab.

[–]iamsothecoolest 0 points1 point ago

About halfway through the GIF: "I'm free! Seizure time!"

[–]iTz_Nyan 0 points1 point ago

Fuck! Now I'm hungry.

[–]ricaud 0 points1 point ago

that was gross

[–]kag0 0 points1 point ago

That... I... WHAT??

[–]Kerspooks 0 points1 point ago

Is it really called a Spider Crab? Because I was calling it a spider-crab way before it occurred to me that it may actually be what it's called...

[–]openToSuggestions 0 points1 point ago

That's what crabs do... that's not WTF...

[–]aurahematoma 0 points1 point ago

That must be how it looks when Jeffrey Jones takes his clothes off at the end of the day.

[–]BrevityBrony 0 points1 point ago

yeah that's kind of NOPE

[–]GenerallySpecific 0 points1 point ago

nope

[–]LoriStrode 0 points1 point ago

[–]Testsubject28 0 points1 point ago

[–]JGPliskin 0 points1 point ago

[–]CUNTDESTROYERPhD 0 points1 point ago

"Whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop"

[–]Dinky_82 0 points1 point ago

Well THAT was horrifying

[–]ElAlexo 0 points1 point ago

can someone please give an explanation to this? :=)

[–]fractalfarmer 1 point2 points ago

Crabs shed their exoskeleton periodically and grow a new, larger one - the exoskeleton doesn't grow with them. Snakes and spiders do it too.

[–]dragonsroc 0 points1 point ago

De-shelling itself? Now that's a crab I don't mind eating!

[–]NotSiZhe 0 points1 point ago

Cool

[–]jacobsaarela 0 points1 point ago

All Crabs do this when they out grow their shell. They are all soft and moshy when they come out. Then after a while they get a new shell!

[–]Kangurue 0 points1 point ago

Mr Krabs

[–]Szos 0 points1 point ago

You're telling me that's not some Hollywood CG?!?

O.0

Terrifying.

[–]Recall_Coordinator 0 points1 point ago

I always wondered how delicious a crab would be if you cooked it right after it molts. Like if you'd be able to just eat the legs shell-on.

[–]Hone9 0 points1 point ago

Those legs. NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE

[–]soren_grey 0 points1 point ago

That looks WAY too much like a giant spider.

[–]skateyfrox 0 points1 point ago

you shoulda heard my scream...

[–]MissJade018 0 points1 point ago

nope

[–]kylieharr 0 points1 point ago

This was one of the scariest things that I've ever seen.

[–]Umpalumpa47 0 points1 point ago

What.

The.

Fuck.

[–]SimpleinSeattle 0 points1 point ago

And to think how much we love to eat them....

[–]canobiecrazy 0 points1 point ago

IIRC, they eat the old shell afterwards, too.

[–]SolidCopper 0 points1 point ago

AHHHH! KILL IT WITH FIRE!

[–]shaynethecoker 0 points1 point ago

Taking a dump, this really helped.

[–]erg7134 0 points1 point ago

[–]DisterDan 0 points1 point ago

[–]MrLovelife 0 points1 point ago

[–]pinkythug 0 points1 point ago

Why can't humans do that?

[–]Original_vim 0 points1 point ago

nope!

[–]spaceymacey 0 points1 point ago

I am TERRIFIED

[–]Chef_Kevorkian 0 points1 point ago

NOPE.

[–]SpazFactorial 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing this video over a year ago....I don't know why, but to this day I cannot eat crab legs without getting queasy.

[–]calsipher 0 points1 point ago

I'm never going to sleep ever again....... EVER

[–]WonderPup123 0 points1 point ago

Dafuq is that!
