If he wants to write fiction, then write fiction. Talk about the Christian Scare in 1953 and 1954 when people lost their jobs and shunned because they were exposed as Christians. Go into detail about how Proposition 8 made it illegal for Christians to marry.

do it in the form of a debate. Let each side make a point, then counterpoint.

Alternate in this. write a paper on the results of this debate. If your partner wins on logic. I'd be fascinated. I'd also force them to provide sources, as I find that most arguments to that point are lacking in supporting evidence.
