To be fair, no fucks were given by this guy ever. That's why he watches porn in a library.

Actually, he is exercising his freedom of speech. It's a public library, and porn is not illegal. Though I would assume the library could ask him to watch at a more isolated location.

[–]Ossentjuk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And I can exercise my right to beat the living shit out of him before my son or daughter innocently walks by because they are checking out a book.

I guess you're right. I rather the government have the right to censor our ability to consume information than to offend you. ;) The problem isn't the porn, the problem is when the library thinks it should censor "inappropriate" books, and websites that discuss "bad" things. You get where I'm going. Regardless, the us supreme court agrees with this position.

[–]Ossentjuk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You did not offend me at all man, I agree, censoring things at all is horrible but its honestly a case by case basis. A child should be able to do research on the columbine massacre (For example of something that might be blocked) but I should have peace at mind that my child will not walk by someone watching porn in a fucking library of all places. Upboating you for having an intelligent reply. Good day sir.

one of my dreams for when I am 80 something. I want to be caught doing that, but by then I am sure the library will be just one big computer.

You'd be surprised at how much this happens. The kicker? The US Supreme Court has said that it's protected by the First Amendment

As a librarian if I see this I can't really say anything (Provided this is happening in an 18+ computer room). If there is a complaint I get to go in and say, "Sir/Madam there has been a complaint about what you're viewing on your computer please stop or you will be asked to leave." They always get really embarrassed. One time some guys headphones came out and for about a minute everyone stared at him before telling him.

[–]IPThereforeIAm -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you a librarian at a public library? Why do you get to ask them to leave? Would you ask someone to leave if I was offended that they were reading a Stephen King book?

[–]kakozlow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am a public librarian. I don't say anything unless there is a complaint. If it is making another customer uncomfortable our policy is that we tell them there has been a complaint. They stop then. I don't think I have ever had someone continue to watch porn in the 18+ room. If it is not in the 18+ room (because there are some computers that we don't filter that are in the open) and someone is watching porn we ask them to stop 100%. A minor could walk by. Nobody can see the content of your Stephen King book but patrons run the risk of seeing pornography which is considered offensive language. The library is all about the access to information but as staff members we need to make sure everyone is comfortable and we need create a welcoming environment. Like I said if someone is watching porn and there are no complaints I don't care and I don't say anything. Watch whatever you want. :)

[–]IPThereforeIAm -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think you understand my point. legally, per the us supreme court you can't tell someone in the 18+ room to leave or stop just because someone else is uncomfortable. That's the equivalent of the government telling someone they don't have the right to express their views because other people don't like it. It is a freedom speech issue the supreme court has addressed directly. Believe it or not, as a librarian at a public library you are the government.

Edit: before you take my word on this, I should find the case. It is possible that I am wrong, and would happily admit this.

[–]kakozlow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pornography in the library is protected under the First Amendment. However, precautions still need to be taken. There can be an 18+ room but if none of those computers have privacy screens and those rooms have windows (this is how every public library I have been to is set up) a minor could still see something they should not.

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Seattle-library-lets-man-watch-porn-despite-2873692.php

There are articles upon articles about situations like this. I just graduated with my MLIS and I am in a new position. I am currently working on getting privacy screens for all of the computers. But until then I am simply following the library policy that our Director has in place.

Edit: There is constantly grey area in situations like this. Libraries can elect to have privacy filters so patrons can't access porn. They are preventing the access to information but that is their choice.

[–]IPThereforeIAm -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"A public library has traditionally and historically enjoyed broad discretion to select materials to add to its collection of printed materials for its patrons' use," the court wrote.

This tells me I may be wrong. If the us supreme court had ruled on this saying they couldn't block content, then the state court would not have said this. I had not heard of the MLIS degree before--very interesting.

Good luck in your position, I bet it is very difficult to get a librarian position right now, especially fresh out of school. Congrats! :) If I find any cases that contradict the article, I'll let you know. If not, you can assume my silence is a concession ;)

[–]kakozlow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha thanks. There is a lot of grey area though and there are always dealing with this. A Master's Degree in Library and Information Science was actually the first degree on a "Worst Masters's Degrees to Get" list published by Forbes. I was lucky to graduate in May and get a job the same month but I feel that it is still a volitile position with the economy still trying to recover.

People do this all the time, if you google "watched porn in a library" lots of results come up in the news, apparently there's nothing they can do to stop them.

[–]kalpour 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I work at a library, and all we can do is tell them to stop, and that works on most people, but then there are some freaks who keep on going, looking you in the eye while the girl gets pounded on the screen, and a grin spreading across the observers face. I still can't sleep at night

[–]librarianzrock 2 points3 points ago

Public libraries especially. I'm an academic librarian so it's not nearly as wacky as the world of publics. We did have one guy (not a student) come in every day for 2 weeks dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, but that was hardly scarring.
