In all seriousness, I'd love to know if men in countries where women commonly wear the full hijab have developed some method of knowing if a woman is attractive under it. Like I would have no idea but maybe to them its really obvious.

[–]KiNGMONiR 86 points87 points ago

Credentials: I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia until moving to Canada 3 years ago.

Guys look at eyes (often not covered and sometimes adorned with makeup), feet, and the curvature of the body, which is more apparent thanks to modern abayas that are more fitting. Also, girls will sometimes let the head dress slide off a little bit to reveal some hair, which is deemed attractive.

This knowledge is from my experience in Riyadh, the capital. Other places are different with varying degrees of religious strictness which translates into the way women cover themselves.

[–]478nist 113 points114 points ago

girls will sometimes let the head dress slide off a little bit to reveal some hair

Those SLUTS!

[–]KiNGMONiR 52 points53 points ago

I'm not kidding when I say A LOT of people actually think like that... Very sad.

[–]ricecows 4 points5 points ago

The only muslim country I've ever been to is Turkey (Istanbul), so I probably don't know how it works, but (!) is the hijab not supposed to cover up the girl? As in fully cover her up?

It always seemed weird to me when I see muslim girls in my country wear a scarf around their head to cover their hair, but then walk in high heels and a skirt... Then why not just lose the damn scarf?!

[–]KiNGMONiR 0 points1 point ago

Different countries enforce it differently. The principle is to "cover up". More liberal muslims will still wear jeans/skirts that cover their legs, long sleeve shirts, along with a head dress, all of which technically "covers" them. Abaya's are used to cover a female's curves which is deemed in Saudi as an avenue to sinfulness if seen by men.

[–]Eaqj 0 points1 point ago

Yes it's supposed to cover the full body. Those who reveal some of their hair are considered sinners. Unfortunately, they ignore that fact these days and just think about the new "Style".

[–]Stair_Car 0 points1 point ago

I think you misspelled "fortunately."

[–]jurassic_blue 30 points31 points ago

Cover your ankles you tramp!

[–]aFlyingGuru 9 points10 points ago

That's actually what it was like in Iran after the islamistic revolution. Letting a lock of hair show was a sign that you were rebellic. You could actually get in trouble for that too; there were groups of nazi nuns raiding the streets for young women that didn't cover themselves properly

[–]Prism_Squid 14 points15 points ago

Thats really interesting. Thanks for your insight!

[–]KablamTakeThat 1 point2 points ago

I am a Muslim, myself. Every detail explained is true.

[–]NamelessPurity 0 points1 point ago

You moved out of Saudi Arabia and your first choice to go to was Canada?

[–]KiNGMONiR 0 points1 point ago

Ummmm... Yes? What do you mean Canada? Canada is one of the best places to live.

[–]PSNDonutDude -1 points0 points ago

Talking to a Muslim girl on my vacation, I learned a lot about they're culture and how things work. I would love any other fun facts that we would not expect. The number on paper thrown at their feet or purse is something I never thought existed... Most of us in Other countries see the Muslims as robotic none human religious nuts and the things that show they're still people interests me.

[–]KiNGMONiR 3 points4 points ago

I wouldn't call it a Muslim thing. Religion shapes culture but isn't in itself one. Muslims can exist in any country and behave in every way possible. That distinction is important.

The phone number throwing is actually a phenomenon in Gulf countries, where culturally it is frowned upon for men and women (influenced by strict Islam) to have direct contact so this came up as a substitute for flirting. These days thanks to social networking, they would throw BBM pins or Twitter handles. But it is less apparent now as it is much more easier to find and talk to girls online. In other Arab countries, you'll see direct flirting just like anywhere.

[–]dawgiesman1 35 points36 points ago

Maybe they enjoy the fantasy of imagining whats underneath it all?

[–]Drawtaru 7 points8 points ago

This seems to be the more likely scenario. The more that is left to the imagination, the more can be imagined. I'm not saying that women should walk around naked, but that outfit definitely causes more harm than good to all concerned parties.

[–]timshundo 2 points3 points ago

i.e. Bubbling.

[–]cultured_banana_slug -1 points0 points ago

I imagine giant bubbles covering everything but the eyeballs. Ooh, that saucy wench!

[–]feilen 0 points1 point ago

I'm not saying that women should walk around naked,

I'm saying everyone should |3

[–]primitive_screwhead 9 points10 points ago

All the Middle Eastern guys I'm friends with (Palestinian and Arab, mainly) are total foot fetishists! Enough that we (western white dudes) have picked up on it and joke about it. I don't want to necessarily imply a stereotype based on this small data set, but I would really like to hear from other men who have grown up in this situation if this is a more general thing than just my few friends.

[–]MacGuyverism 10 points11 points ago

In a nudist camp, will we find internal organs fetishists?

Just a thought...

[–]meh100 1 point2 points ago

No.

[–]MacGuyverism 2 points3 points ago

I'd like to find an argument to counter yours, but I can't. You won.

[–]truestoryrealtalk 0 points1 point ago

Hold on, I've got one:

Yes.

[–]mjolnir616 15 points16 points ago

Heaps of women in London wear it. You can tell.

[–]Annapolitan 3 points4 points ago

How many?

[–]mjolnir616 1 point2 points ago

A lot of women in London wear a full burqa or niqab. "Heaps" is just some Antipodean slang for 'a lot' that I picked up when I lived in New Zealand.

[–]Annapolitan 0 points1 point ago

no, i get it. no problem. it's just a typical reply here. ex: Scores of people were trampled by bulls. How many? Scores.

[–]brussels4breakfast 1 point2 points ago

"Heaps". lol.

[–]478nist 17 points18 points ago

you're weird.

[–]MacGuyverism 8 points9 points ago

And a new friendship was born.

[–]A-BIG-FAT-FONY 7 points8 points ago

[–]DukeBerith 6 points7 points ago

[–]kaipanoi 0 points1 point ago

that's one sexy ninja

[–]onceastreetrat 12 points13 points ago

men will sexualize women no matter what they're wearing

[–]Stair_Car 1 point2 points ago

twelve hours and no link to Japanese porn? for shame, Reddit. For shame.

[–]HappyHappyist 2 points3 points ago

Hey. All a gentleman needs to get his jollies is from indecent ankle exposure.

[–]babysealstomper -4 points-3 points ago

Rape that's how...

[–]scrtagent101 21 points22 points ago

Is this in Saudi Arabia? If so, fun fact: men and women aren't allowed to mingle, so it's commonplace for someone to throw their phone number at the feet of the opposite sex. If they're interested, they pick it up.

[–]Ozzie_O 11 points12 points ago

Nope, this is Yemen! Close though.

[–]moto593 6 points7 points ago

Women aren't allowed by to leave home by themselves without a male company

[–]KiNGMONiR 1 point2 points ago

Source?

[–]flamingiceriver -1 points0 points ago

Do not have source but I was told that also.

[–]OwlPepper 0 points1 point ago

American Dad?

[–]ricecows 0 points1 point ago

Not sure about Saudi or Yemen, but for a source for women not allowed to leave their home without male company, read James Fergusons "Taliban".

[–]Stair_Car 0 points1 point ago

There is no such law in Yemen. Probably there are plenty of communities where this is an unofficial rule, though. Like most mountainous countries, Yemen has places where you can go and feel like you've gone back in time three hundred years.

[–]moto593 0 points1 point ago

It's in Saudi

[–]brussels4breakfast 4 points5 points ago

.....or they turn them into the police for littering.

[–]KiNGMONiR 2 points3 points ago

They actually aim for the purse not the feet.

[–]OAOIa 2 points3 points ago

I had to visit Riyadh for a week or so and was dumbfounded when guys started to throw folded up pieces of paper out of their car windows.

[–]scrtagent101 0 points1 point ago

I'm actually writing a paper on how Bluetooth temporarily replaced that method before the religious police picked up on it. Once the police got on top of things, people went right back to throwing paper.

[–]sparx483 7 points8 points ago

The really creepy part is the two guys on one motorcycle.

[–]brussels4breakfast 1 point2 points ago

Heh.

[–]FlarpmanBob 10 points11 points ago

If I see an Ankle, this girl's going to jail.

[–]Ascott1989 35 points36 points ago

There's something incredibly creepy about those two men. It's like they're eyeing them up as a piece of meat. Very unsettling.

[–]ProfessorMcHugeBalls 23 points24 points ago

This is how most guys act amongst themselves when they know the woman they're checking out can't see them. Like if they two North American men were walking behind a fit girl in yoga pants there would be a lot of nodding, grinning, and "not bad" faces.

[–]JustMadeYouYawn 22 points23 points ago

Uhh, those looks are pretty universal dude. We all look pretty creepy when we check out women.

[–]Ascott1989 0 points1 point ago

Wow, thanks for posting that photo. I'd never seen it before.

[–]Stair_Car 0 points1 point ago

"American Girl in Italy" is a wonderful photo, but the caption is a bit misleading. Although Ruth Orkin did capture a lot of spontaneous photos, "American Girl in Italy" is staged. That doesn't make it any less cool, of course. Just like this other famous staged photograph by a different photographer.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Wow what a fox.

[–]deafcon5 2 points3 points ago

Maybe somewhere along the line they started dressing like that so that guys like that couldn't see them.

[–]Ascott1989 4 points5 points ago

The problem is though, is that is makes them sexually immature. The whole reason behind their culture believing that men cannot handle their urges is because they're not used to seeing the female body regularly. Also, it's culturally accepted that women are inferior. It's unfortunate that the burka is actually more to protect the women from the men. It's why sometimes it's an issue when groups of Middle Eastern men come over and start groping / assaulting women.

[–]capitain_argot 0 points1 point ago

Groping a female could almost guarantee a bad time for the groping party rather than the groped, depending on which country, even which neighborhood, we're talking about.

[–]brussels4breakfast 8 points9 points ago

It is. I am incredibly unsettled now. Come to think of it, I've been unsettled for quite some time.

[–]Ascott1989 18 points19 points ago

Our combined jimmies are incredibly rustled.

[–]brussels4breakfast -1 points0 points ago

What are "jimmies"?

[–]Blumba 5 points6 points ago

I wonder if a lot of Muslims have foot fetishes because of this... just wondrin'. :l

[–]Japanistan 1 point2 points ago

Well, I'm a Muslim in the US, and I don't have a foot fetish. I don't think all Muslims have foot fetishes.

[–]Blumba 0 points1 point ago

Well, obviously not all of them, by any means, but I do wonder if it's more prevalent in a culture that limits a person's visibility to develope a taste for the visible parts.

[–]Japanistan 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I wonder..

[–]unfrnlyprtstr 0 points1 point ago

As a Indonesian Muslim I assure you that this is not an issue in my nation.

[–]weird-oh 8 points9 points ago

I guess you take what you can get.

As a female I must agree. No offense to men from there but I find your 'look' creepy.

[–]maitehate 1 point2 points ago

no matter where de from, that sort of look is creepy as FUCK

[–]brussels4breakfast 0 points1 point ago

It is.

[–]Febrifuge 1 point2 points ago

I'm a guy, and I'm not offended, because that's a creepy-ass look those guys are giving, and I hope to hell I don't do that. Pretty sure I don't.

[–]alekspg 0 points1 point ago

Well, didn't expect that.

[–]StreetMailbox 0 points1 point ago

WHAT THE HELL USED TO BE THERE?

[–]brussels4breakfast 0 points1 point ago

[–]IzziTheEpic 0 points1 point ago

Seriously, this has to be my 30th time seeing this picture since I joined reddit, I get more and more pissed every time. It's not that I'm complaining, because new people might want to see it, I just wish there was a way to stop pictures that you already saw from come up on your front page.

[–]brussels4breakfast 6 points7 points ago

Boy that's pretty damned sad.

[–]ProfessorMcHugeBalls 0 points1 point ago

How is it any different than a guy checking out a busty woman in a tank top?

[–]meh100 5 points6 points ago

The burka.

[–]ProfessorMcHugeBalls 1 point2 points ago

But culturally it's the same. Here, revealing clothing is a girl showing her bust line or a rising skirt. In Muslim countries it might be an ankle or a wrist. Sure, objectively they're completely different but subjectively it's the same titillation.

[–]meh100 2 points3 points ago

What's sad is the oppression of the women and the repression of the men. It's not the same titillation. The imagination is strong, but the bottom line is that humans were evolved to be aroused by the flesh of other humans. Muslim toe fetish is not a coincidence. It arises because no matter how strong the imagination is, the sight of human flesh is stronger.

[–]Zoepezygillman 7 points8 points ago

I'm a Muslim lesbian...andddddd I think women with hijab are incredibly beautiful...I don't agree with total coverage like the photo.

And no, I haven't been stoned or shunned.

But you've been downvoted.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I see that, Kapitan Obvious.

I've only seen this picture once before and it made me laugh until my shit exploded. The caption was different, though. It was:

I think I preferred that.

[–]rico99 -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, Muslim guys most of time they go at each other and have wild homo sex after dancing and singing.
