That would cause karma hyperinflation at first. Then, nobody would post anything, but go around upvoting every single post our comment. If it were like that, the internet would implode on itself.

If every vote both increases and decreases karma,

how can karma inflate?

Everyone would try to go through as many reddit posts as possible, amd give upvotes. What I meant, was that there would be upvote inflation. Every post would have thousands, to tens of thousands of points. Then, people would stop posting, because every upvote would reduce karma.
