I'm pretty much always creeped out by seaweed.

Nothing like feeling something brush against your feet/legs while away from shore.

Fuck you, seaweed. Fuck you very much.

[–]sex_and_the_shitty 229 points230 points ago

"I went water skiing and I found out that I scream the exact same if a great white attacks me...or if a piece of seaweed touches my foot."

-Kevin James

[–]bfgbasic 66 points67 points ago

A scream in both situations is justified.

[–]sex_and_the_shitty 33 points34 points ago

No argument here. I react the same way after a shower whenever I find a loose, lengthy, wet strand of hair sticking to my body.

[–]ChagSC 13 points14 points ago

Horrible quality but here is the link

It's also one of the funniest stand-up specials of all time. Here is the full youtube clip. Watch it. WATCH IT!

[–]Deathalicious 52 points53 points ago

You need to watch more comedy specials.

[–]Telamonian 16 points17 points ago

My cousin used to go swimming in this old sinkhole and when swimming you could feel the tops of pine trees with your toes.

[–]burningbeast55 8 points9 points ago

I think that would actually be really cool. If it was deep enough and clear water I would try ad dive it just to see what it's like down there.

[–]TehWut 3 points4 points ago

did he ever try to dive down to the base of the tree? that actually sounds really fun

[–]knee_growedz 2 points3 points ago

I think they put them in lakes for fish habitats. We go through a lot of them at Christmas

That's a never-ending Fibonacci sequence of NOPE.

[–]meistergeister 5 points6 points ago

The first time I ever stepped foot in the ocean I was maybe 6 years old. Seaweed immediately wrapped around my ankles and I ran out crying because I thought something was trying to eat me. 16 years later and I'm still terrified of the ocean. So yeah, fuck you, seaweed.

[–]SeisGurl9 1 point2 points ago

Funny, first time I looked at the ocean I was about four. A huge (about the size of me) disgusting dead fish floated up to me and I ran away. 21 years later I am still terrified of the ocean.

Haha, triggers.

I'm going to make sure my children's first experiences with the ocean are stellar lest they end up like me; trapped on a planet full of NOPE.

[–]jfrizzera 37 points38 points ago

I stepped on some this past week in the ocean and freaked. It was like stepping in a pile of liquid NOPE

[–]noahjk 18 points19 points ago

It's funny because seaweed is a solid and you're swimming in a liquid, but that's exactly how I'd describe the feeling as well - stepping on a liquid. It's more like stepping on a tough, lubed up slab of jello, but either way...

[–]MausIguana 8 points9 points ago

Seaweed is not a solid. No ma'am. It's demon spawn.

[–]That_Annoying_Kid 1 point2 points ago

Five states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, demon spawn

[–]NOPE_IS_NOT_A_NOUN 87 points88 points ago

[–]beneathsands 22 points23 points ago

Sorry to say, but within internet vernacular, "nope" has gained easily interpretable meaning as both a noun, and a verb.

[–]spankymuffin 10 points11 points ago

Still doesn't make it a noun.

[–]BeardedBagels 9 points10 points ago

Besides more recent internet vernacular, nope has long been used as a noun in the English language.

[–]sgtsaughter 3 points4 points ago

This is my nightmare

[–]CarbonCreed 1 point2 points ago

You know whats worse than having seaweed brush against you? Having jellyfish brush against you.

[–]nllpntr 22 points23 points ago

I knew it! Graduated from UCSB in 04, and figured: pretty beach, oil rig, distant islands... it must be...

[–]KissTheBlade 7 points8 points ago

I knew it as well! Raised in Carpinteria, my brother surfs there regularly.

[–]nllpntr 2 points3 points ago

Awesome. I hail from Humboldt county originally, but after living down there for five years... Color me jealous. Such a similar vibe socially (at least in goleta/IV), but with awesome weather. And hotter chicks.

[–]suppasonic 1 point2 points ago

Another Carp native here -- god I miss Beach Liquor burritos

[–]Triviaandwordplay 1 point2 points ago

Small world. Carp is my childhood stomping ground. My father lives on linden and Sandyland, and my sister lives in La Conchita.

That's Rincon Point which is real close to La Conchita. Not so close to Santa Barbara.

[–]PettyJeans 4 points5 points ago

Actually Rincon is in Carpinteria. Woo Carp!

[–]forevercabron 2 points3 points ago

I was going to say Ventura, but yeah, SB is very similar coastline with the islands and oils platforms...

[–]jjuicy21 5 points6 points ago

I this was in SB

[–]professional_here 19 points20 points ago

I you accidentally a word.

[–]AKA_Squanchy 1 point2 points ago

I knew it was SB and searches for this comment before posting. Grew up surfing there!

[–]orangejulius 1 point2 points ago

I recognize that spot from the island and the oil rigs. :)

[–]zipperlips 1 point2 points ago

yeah, the outline of Santa Cruz island, fronted by the oil rigs, sorta gave it away. I ride my bike past this view every day!

[–]pwnies 205 points206 points ago

I've had it get tangled in my surfboard cord before. Always an unpleasant experience, as it really feels like it's pulling you under. That's not actually the case, it's just that it slows you down and the water level behind the wave is higher than in front, so it creates an illusion of pulling you deeper into its tentacley grasp. Also adding to the experience is that underwater seaweed acts as a fiber optic cable of sorts, channeling sunlight from the surface. The end result is that it glows if you're down deep enough, or if there's enough whitewater above you to block out the light. Leaving the seaweed is always kinda freaky as well, because sharks will usually patrol the areas around it in search of the fish that use it as a haven. Yay oceans!

[–]melp 184 points185 points ago

i am going to become rich and famous one day when i invent the underwater lawn mower

[–]fatmoose 40 points41 points ago

There already is such a thing, it gets used up here in Minnesota in the summers to try and remove the overwhelming growth of eurasian milfoil. It's not really underwater though, just the cutting head is.

[–]seamouse 84 points85 points ago

Man I love me some Eurasion MILF oil.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 10 points11 points ago

How many MILFs do you have to squeeze to get an ounce?

[–]Badfly48 8 points9 points ago

6.

[–]Montgomrie 7 points8 points ago

Just one if you're good at it

[–]GreenStrong 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, Eurasian carp are on their way to eat that milfoil right up.

Seriously, carp are herbivores, I'm not certain they eat that specific weed, but they're pretty much exactly the same as goats. Except for the beards. Carp do not have goatees.

[–]ionoi 1 point2 points ago

Heh, I inspect boats for Eurasian Water Milfoil in Minnesota.

[–]cralledode 16 points17 points ago

why would that be necessary? kelp is fucking awesome.

[–]SHIT_IN_HER_CUNT 20 points21 points ago

And edible! So he can sell the ... uhh... sea clippings!

[–]nicoleisrad 9 points10 points ago

And fish have lots of babies in it to repopulate our oceans. Yay for kelp!

[–]cralledode 2 points3 points ago

  • Habitat for coastal fish and mammals

  • Massive CO2 sink, mitigating climate change

  • Slows ocean acidification

What's not to like?

[–]tbss153 1 point2 points ago

[–]ThaneOfYourMomsVag 9 points10 points ago

Yeah, it was so scary the first time I surfed in kelp. On my first wave I made a bottom turn then bam! my board stopped and I went flying over the front. It scared the crap out of me. Then about an hour later, the front half of a dying seal came floundering into the lineup. Everyone got the fuck out of there. That was the first and last time I will ever surf norcal. Also, the water is way too cold.

[–]whitewhim 1 point2 points ago

Cold? You should try surfing nova scotia in the winter

[–]Backstrom 2 points3 points ago

Why would anyone do that ever.

Think that's hot? You should try standing in a volcano...in the summer.

[–]alabap[S] 25 points26 points ago

ugh ugh ugh

[–]apteryx_274 15 points16 points ago

I'm sorry, but I can't kelp you with that!

[–]l0ve2h8urbs 4 points5 points ago

[–]Internaltheory79 1 point2 points ago

Water you talking about?

[–]SmileyPies03 1 point2 points ago

At least it didn't seal your fate!

[–]bolthead88 6 points7 points ago

That happened to me surfing in Cambria. Scared the crap out of me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I am never going swimming again. Not even hot tubs.

[–]leveled 5 points6 points ago

yeah, fuck showers, too.

[–]vertigo1083 27 points28 points ago

SEAWEED?

Fuck. Being out on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean has exposed me to far more nopes than I care to remember. Jellyfish the size of small sedans. Shark feeding frenzies when garbage was thrown overboard.

I don't go in the ocean anymore, unless I'm securely floating on it.

[–]SeisGurl9 15 points16 points ago

Jellyfish the size of small sedans

ಠ_ಠ

[–]vertigo1083 15 points16 points ago

[–]SeisGurl9 8 points9 points ago
