I actually have friends who are professional underwater photogs, and one in particular is specifically a shark diver. His website is http://elasmodiver.com/ and you can see some of the hundreds of sharks he's shot. He doesn't use a cage. Ever, to my knowledge. Never been nibbled.

I should get him to do an AMA one of these days.

Highly recommend reading the book "the devils teeth" about the sharks off of San Francisco. White sharks still freak me out, but far less so after having read that book and learned much about them and their habits.

Maybe irrational wasn't the right word. I just avoid any and all large bodies of water because I'm convinced that sharks can adapt and swim anywhere. It sounds crazy, but my brother forcing me to watch shark week every year when we were kids kind of explains the crazy.

Actually we were in New Zealand. About as far south as you can get, in between Bluff and Stewart Island. Water was about 8 degrees Celsius. Sharks were about 5 meters long.

Yeah they're majestic creatures even when they're smaller. I've seen a few just shy of 2 meters but even then, they swim with an attitude. It's like they know that noone will fuck with them because they WILL grow up to be really bad-ass. :)
