WWII had some serious rationing going on.

[–]phishf00d 0 points1 point ago

This. TGPZarquon has missed the point here.

That poster was made to encourage people to car share and save fuel. Fuel that was needed for the war effort not lazy civvies.

[–]TGPZarquon 34 points35 points ago

I don't know how old you are - I don't mean to be patronizing. It's hard to understand now, because there is so much (sadly deserved) mistrust currently against our (the U.S.) government and it's military. But once we were mobilized against Germany, there was very little question that Hitler was an evil fuck who had to be stopped. People were proud to be patriotic. Stuff like this wasn't thought of as propaganda, it was accepted as truth. There was no "I support our troops but I'm against the war." Many people considered WW2 to be the last "just" war the US was involved with. Unfortunately, that patriotism and nation-wide support of our military became a "trust capital" that the US Government has abused ever since.

It was american propaganda to encourage people to save gas for the military by carpooling

If you're being honest, I have no clue why you're being down-voted.

[–]hmquite 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure he's being a smartass.

[–]Nwsamurai 13 points14 points ago

I was during Wold War II.

Gas and oil was needed on the front, so propaganda like this was created so people would do their part by conserving whenever possible.

[–]JUSTCALLmeY 1 point2 points ago

... So when people carpooled they saved oil and gas and those who didnt carpool (drove by themselves) were using valuable resources

[–]Nwsamurai 4 points5 points ago

Correct. The implication being if you weren't doing every thing you could to help our troops, you were essentially aiding the enemy.

Why is ghost Hitler so sad?

[–]Jesus_marley 9 points10 points ago

Probably because he's dead.

[–]ElectricSh33p 0 points1 point ago

Maybe the badass in the driver seat had his way with ghost Eva Braun.

i have the book " if you ride alone you ride with bin laden" same cover except it has bin laden and the author. I bought it for shits and giggles.

[–]RX_queen 2 points3 points ago

It's to encourage carpooling so they'd waste less gas.

[–]sugarywalrus 0 points1 point ago

I had to interpret that in my 7th grade English class. I was so confused. We were learning about poetry, then BAM!: Anti-Hitler carpooling ads!

[–]Fupa_Penetrator 2 points3 points ago

While gasoline was cheaper in WWII than today, their cars were beasts. The gas was needed for military trucks and planes, so carpooling was a way to save gas for the war effort.

Plus as Error-404 states, nearly everything was rationed (except the famous '40's style), gas being no exception.

[–]UsernameCensored 0 points1 point ago

I think you are failing to appreciate just how severe the rationing was in the UK, and especially how vitally every spare drop of fuel was needed at the front.

[–]moneyonfire 2 points3 points ago

where did you find this?

[–]Midnight_Skye -1 points0 points ago

If you're riding with someone because you're riding alone, then that would mean this poster doesn't have cake.

[–]Hamsterdam 1 point2 points ago

Car sharing? Why, that sounds like socialism to me.

[–]SovereignGFC 1 point2 points ago

Search "World war 2 posters" on Google. There are a huge number of these.

[–]Tulee -1 points0 points ago

Ride alone. Crash and kill Hitler. End war. Be a hero.

[–]Polymathic 0 points1 point ago

If you really want to see some wild examples of this, go to archive.org and look for a film called "Scrap happy Daffy." Daffy Duck (a classic cartoon character) has the job of "scrap warden" during World War II. These were neighborhood volunteers who coordinated the collection of all kinds of metals which were used to build things vital to the war effort as well as rubber for jeep tires, etc.

I warn you that the film portrays some stereotypes. The swastika-wearing enemy goat constantly trying to steal/eat Daffy's stockpile isn't so bad but I think there were some very unattractive portrayals of certain Japanese officers.

It does give an interesting glimpse into the lengths to which the government and media were willing to go to encourage people to save, recycle and recover certain critical materials.

There was one of these in my History classroom my freshman year.............

[–]SkateboardG -1 points0 points ago

[–]Chiz252 -2 points-1 points ago

You can't blame them for using a great slogan. Come on, who wants to ride with Hitler.

[–]Sharkictus -2 points-1 points ago

Bring that back, gas prices will drop dramatically!

[–]pilgore223 -2 points-1 points ago

it says if you're riding alone you're riding with hitler. but if hitler is with you then you're not alone. But if you're not alone then you're not with hitler... does not compute!>!>11100101110011010100011!!!%$

I learned about this last year in 7th grade WWII History Class.

I had to do tons of projects on this.

America, at the time, was all about rationing-in this case, rationing gas. That was for the military to use, so that they could have more gas to use for themselves. Thus, using unnecessary gas by riding a car by yourself when you could ride with other people to save gas, Germany would have the upper hand with gas.

The propaganda during WWII times was not uncommon-in fact, it was used a lot. There were multiple posters that were actually made by the U.S. during that time, and I had to write a paragraph on each picture (20 in the packet) on what the symbols in the picture mean and what the overall message is, and how it persuaded Americans to do what the government wanted.

It was quite an interesting unit of the class.
