Why did you use Steve Irwin and not Mick Dundee?

[–]loafbone 4 points5 points ago

He had better watch out for Viper(with a Manta Style), apparently.

[–]wiggle987 1 point2 points ago

Too soon :'(

[–]TryingtoSavetheWorld 1 point2 points ago

My first thought is that he probably doesn't know who Mick Dundee is (perhaps too young) and he automatically associated crocodiles with Steve Irwin. No matter the reasoning it is a catastrophic failure.

[–]Plivoot 8 points9 points ago

I can totally see why Invoker is your favorite hero.

[–]gave -1 points0 points ago

He just couldn't wait for that karma

[–]uw_NB 43 points44 points ago

need a dota2 related content rule or smthing

[–]whaleye 15 points16 points ago

Yep, I don't want this too turn out like r/Starcraft.

[–]Classic™ReaverXai 15 points16 points ago

r/Starcraft is actually in the process of implementing a rule that might be proper for us as well:

ITEM 1 (FLUFF RULE): Submission content that is currently on the fluff list must be placed within a text/self submission or it will be removed. The fluff list includes, and is currently limited to:

  • Image macros

  • Rage comics

  • Communication content (Twitter updates, Facebook statuses, chat logs, their screen captures, et cetera) that is unnewsworthy (think "reputable news source" rather than "tabloid")

  • Images or videos of StarCraft personalities (professional gamers, casters/commentators, or industry insiders) or organizations doing something that does not primarily pertain to a StarCraft game or its professional scene (for example, Day[9] playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Husky getting a mohawk for charity)

[–]Lord_Of_The_Dice 2 points3 points ago

I really like this rule, and would be all for having it implemented. Perhaps we could have a community vote or survey to see how everybody feels about it, much like you guys did for the memepost rules.

(On a slightly unrelated note, I really like how the mod team here takes an active role in the community. It's a rare occurrence on reddit, and I feel like it improves the quality of the sub significantly. Keep up the good work!)

or a dota 2 circlejerk

[–]N9-GoDz 13 points14 points ago

I'm personally glad i get linked to this stuff every now and then when i come on this reddit haha. ease up guys ! unless it gets flooded with it, just keep posting and upvoting the important/good dota2 specific stuff as well.

A few things like this isn't gonna hurt :(

[–]Who's that handsome devil?areeuu 4 points5 points ago

The problem is drawing the line. If you keep letting content like this through, it becomes (incorrectly) apparent to the /r/dota2 subscribers that this is the kind of content people will appreciate. I guess it is a kind of 'slippery slope'.

The worst part for me personally is not only do I not find this particular image funny, I have a lot of trouble believing anyone else would actually "laugh out loud" at it. It's just one of those cheap gags which relies on you getting a feeling of inclusion out of it as opposed to being genuinely funny.

There should just be a subreddit for Dota 2 things that are fluff.

[–]Lord_Of_The_Dice 7 points8 points ago

What you're suggesting has been tried before with other subreddits, and unfortunately it doesn't appear to work that well. The reason why it doesn't work can be traced back to the karma system and the silent majority of the subreddit. I've been on reddit for a while and have seen shit like this happen before, so I'll try to provide a detailed explanation of why it won't work.

First, lets go over what is going on here. People who post shit like OP (and the post earlier about a fucking foot stool) tend to post easy to digest, low quality images in the form of links. So, OP's post is sitting in the new tab. The new tab is often filled with a large number of people who are just looking for quick, easy to digest stuff (or the knights of new happen to have really bad taste). This silent majority chuckle, upvote, and move on all without checking the comments or subreddit, and OP earns a bunch of karma and goes off to make more low quality submissions. Meanwhile, the smaller, more vocal members of the community see the post as it reaches the front page and begin complaining in the comments and down voting the post. However, members of the silent majority who don't happen to browse the new tab also see it and upvote it without bothering to look at the comments, thus securing it's position on the front page. (EDIT: This is a common phenomenon, and has been discussed numerous times in theory of reddit and other meta subs.)

Now, let's imagine there's a separate subreddit for these fluff posts. Ideally, everybody who likes fluff would sub to it, and all fluff submissions would go to it, thus creating ideal environments for serious discussion and fluff. Sadly, the silent majority, and to a lesser extent, the karma system come in to screw up this happy little setup.

First, I'll discuss why the silent majority creates a problem. Most people who only vote (or only comment infrequently) tend to have a very simple voting pattern. If they chuckle, or dawww, go wtf, or get outraged, they upvote and move on. This is frequently done without checking the subreddit that the post is in. This is why you will occassionaly see something more suited for r/funny in r/wtf, or something better for r/pics in r/funny. So, if one of the fluff posts winds up in the serious subreddit, there's a good chance that it will still get upvoted to the front page unless the mod team happens to remove it (and given how upset reddit gets about FREEDOM OF SPEECH when any actual moderation gets done, this is unlikely to happen in most subreddits). Additionally, a significant portion of them may not even care enough to subscribe to the specialized fluff subreddit. So, for our hypothetical scenario, lets say none of the people who dislike fluff sub, and only half of the silent majority sub to the new subreddit. This creates a subreddit significantly smaller than the parent sub, which, when paired with the karma system, leads to our second problem.

Problem two: karma. People looooooove karma. People take those nice little imaginary internet points very seriously. And people who tend to post fluff tend to do so for the easy link karma. Now, as I said in my previous paragraph, the fluff sub is typically a lot smaller than the main sub. This creates a problem for our intrepid little karmawhore. They want to post fluff and get lots of that tasty karma. But, the fluff subreddit only has X number of subscribers. But hey, the serious sub has X*10 subscribers, and some other guy got a fluff post to the front page the other day. So, he posts in the serious sub, because more people equal more karma. And unless there's strong moderation, the silent majority will see the fluff rise to the top of the serious sub. Take for example r/funny. You'll often see reaction gifs with "how I feel when" titles hit the front page. There happens to be an entire subreddit dedicated to that stuff (r/reactiongifs), but funny has over 2 million readers, while reactiongifs has all of 65 thousand. That's a huge difference in potential karma! (Something similar can be seen with askreddit despite the lack of link karma, where most of the posts should go to self, storytime, or DAE, but get rephrased to fit the basic guidelines so they can get more exposure and attention).

So, yeah. While it's a nice idea and works really well in theory, the way reddit works in practice prevents it from being successful.

EDIT: To support my claim a bout a silent majority upvoting fluff content, look at the karma scores on whatever happens to reach the front page. Images tend to have disproportionately large numbers of upvotes compared to self posts, even though the self posts that hit the front page tend to have a large amount of quality content or discussion in them.

tl;dr: Won't work because people have shit taste and like karma. I've got a bunch of free time, and have wasted the past 5 years on reddit, so I've seen it happen before. Also, I'm really bored and can't play DotA right now, so typing this monster of a post was fun.

If you actually read all of that, I love you. Also, woohoo the Lanaya flair got updated

[–]Pacab 1 point2 points ago

Here's a post you'll like, it sums it up the subject perfectly

[–]Wafflecopter42 0 points1 point ago

I read that entire thing, because I love giant blocks of text. After reading it, I remembered this subreddit. It has much less subs than the Diablo 3 subreddit. I remembered that even after having it, some people still kept posting to the main subreddit and never really took off.

[–]www.twitch.tv/BasskipBasskip 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure how much of the problem is due to people trying to farm imaginary internet points, but there's a definite basis for the comments on the silent majority - which is influenced even more by the algorithms that reddit uses to rank the posts within a subreddit.

A fantastic writeup on the problems caused by the reddit ranking algorithm can be found here.

[–]Lord_Of_The_Dice 0 points1 point ago

Hey! I'm actually fairly active in circlebroke, so I saw the post you linked the day it was posted (thanks though, it's a great read). The reason I brought up karma is because whenever something being moved to a smaller sub in oneof the defaults, there's always a group of people complaining about how fewer people will see the post.

However, I could be incorrect as I don't have any hard data. I feel like it does have a role in the problem.

Also, I apologize for any typos. I'm stuck in a car all day so I'm typing this on my phone.

Blah blah blah, something about this subreddit going downhill.

[–]Bitches love snowstormsXet 5 points6 points ago

But it's really true. And its really starting to get to me.

You can see it with the fact that there's barely any comments on this post but a lot of upvotes...

That's exactly how subreddit quality goes down as the people who view it go up. All these passive people who simply upvote the easy to digest content, which is usually imageposts or stupid 'funny' videos.

I mean, look at the OPs submissions - fucking meme posts, and fucking terrible ones at that. Combine that with the fact that his reddit account is 2 months old and this is basically an example of 'the cancer that is killing reddit'.

[–]jacksoncross 5 points6 points ago

First off I would assume there would be more up-votes than comments because there's isn't a lot to talk about. It's a funny play on dendi's name, not a hero discussion so I don't really get where you are going there.

Secondly, A guy posts a lighthearted funny picture, then you come in and insult OP, and everyone on this Reddit saying that we are the cancer that is killing it when you are the sole person bringing all the negativity. So I don't really get where you are going with that either, unless you expected this sub-reddit to be nothing but logical discussion I don't see how anyone in here is "killing it" other than you. And even if you did/do expect this sub-reddit to be nothing but logical discussion your posts offers nothing to that criteria either since all you do is attack the people on it instead of offer any ideas or contributions to making it "Better". You have no right complaining about something unless you try to fix it, doing anything else is just adding to the problem. So basically what I am tryna say is, Whats got your panties in a bunch?

[–]Gryphis -1 points0 points ago

I'd like to think most of us would prefer the discussion of how this Subreddit is becoming a tabloid rather then us all having to sit here and endure in silence.

This negativity has already been brought about by stupid posts like this. just because it isn't vocalized negativity does not dispute the fact.

[–]Phaele 0 points1 point ago

Why is it starting to get it you? It's a normal thing that happens to anything most of the time. As the quantity increases, the quality goes down.

[–]watSizzleby 0 points1 point ago

That's exactly how subreddit quality goes down as the people who view it go up. All these passive people who simply upvote the easy to digest content, which is usually imageposts or stupid 'funny' videos.

Exactly. It's what happened to /r/funny, /r/pics, and countless other subreddits. The popular content is now something that people can digest in 2-3 seconds, decide if it's funny or not, and upvote accordingly.

[–]OurHolyRue 0 points1 point ago

I don't see the harm in a few funny (you can disagree as humour is subjective, ofc) imgs from time to time. Moderation in all things, even DotA2!

[–]Dazzldaddysonclark -1 points0 points ago

It's turning into /r/leagueoflegends

Half the posts on that subreddit are "omg ______ (enter streamer here) is so cute/funny/smart/awesome/generic_compliment"

God I hate this shit. It is the same reason I don't read "PEOPLE" magazine.
