"Hipster or hepcat, as used in the 1940s, referred to aficionados of jazz, in particular bebop, which became popular in the early 1940s. The hipster adopted the lifestyle of the jazz musician, including some or all of the following: dress, slang, use of cannabis and other drugs, relaxed attitude, sarcastic humor, self-imposed poverty and relaxed sexual codes."

(From Wikipedia)

Hipsters were typically young, white men who were trying to emulate black culture during the forties. If this picture was taken during 1969, which is during the Civil Rights Movement in US history, she is most likely calling for the death of all white allies to the black rights cause.

This is in poor taste.

I enjoyed your comment. Just saying.

[–]Wyer 3 points4 points ago

she is most likely calling for the death of all white allies to the black rights cause.

I think you're blowing that out of proportion just a teensy bit.

[–]sadhound55 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you have never heard of Ruby Bridges. She had to have god damn US Marshals escort her to and from school

[–]Wyer 1 point2 points ago

I'm familiar with her story, I'm talking about how this poster is trying to make it sound like a old woman was some kind of white supremacist based solely on the fact that she's wearing a "Death to Hipsters" shirt. I'm not denying that these people existed, however.

[–]princessmud 0 points1 point ago

I might be. But all I know is that we have people today who wear shirts saying "GOD HATES FAGS" and talk about how they will all burn in hell.

And the race stuff was just as bad then. Whenever I see old ladies wearing this stuff, you just know they're vehement about it. THEY HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE.

[–]deadendcruiser 2 points3 points ago

Fucking thank you. If Kerouac and Cassady were still alive they would bend over OP and fuck him dead until the bennys wore off.

Such an ignorant post, OP. Do you know nothing of the beat generation? It's an American staple in history.

[–]VikingSlayer 4 points5 points ago

Well, i see hipsters havent changed much in the last 40-odd years

[–]rasputine 0 points1 point ago

...in what way are modern hipsters imitating 40s black jazz fans? Is it the apple computers? Is it the electronic music? Is it the false and/or sincere environmentalism?

'Cause like, they've fucking changed a lot.

[–]Lollipopsicord 1 point2 points ago

Are you trying to tell me there weren't Apple computers in the 1940's?

[–]404-shame-not-found -1 points0 points ago

Apples didn't exist in the 40's. They didn't know what to call their computers before then. Also, don't try and tell me about Isaac Newton and that bullshit. That was fabricated after the invention of apples. To make people subconsciously think that their computers were tied to intelligence and insight.

First, Steve Jobs father invented the apple, then made up the Isaac Newton thing to have that word apple in everyone's mind, then which Steve himself put it to the computer to associate with Isaac Newton, which is an intellectual thinker. And the idiots that buy into all that, don't realize its all a bunch of propaganda. It's a network of lies man.

Microsoft isn't out of this loop either. Bill Gates. As in gates - Pearly Gates into heaven. It's all mind prepping, to accept something as good at first sight, even if you don't know it. You are conditioned to have an approved opinion on something before you even have an actual thought of the product.

That's why I like Linux. Open source. Lays low not trying anything, but ultimately everyone is going to see the lies those two bastards did to everyone and is going to win the race. Like the penguin. Black and white, no bullshit. Has some yellow, but then again Asians are known to be very smart, so I'll take that. the logo of himself is sitting, as in waiting. That's the motive. Also, the penguin, being from the South Pole proves a further point that the product is distancing itself from the others. After a nuclear war the pole is far enough away that most fallouts won't reach them. (not a super huge one obviously, but still) Resilient in the cold, and they will move on.

That's how it all works. You know a logo that doesn't quite feel right. It's because there's no link from the logo to the product, in some way. A connection makes people feel good.

Liking something no one else thinks is cool. Looking like homeless people

[–]possiblypunctilious -2 points-1 points ago

I'd say the implied racism prevalent in all modern hipster culture is quite a reversal from black sympathizers of 40 years ago.

[–]HailPresidentSkroob 4 points5 points ago

Hipsters were typically young, white men who were trying to emulate black culture during the forties. If this picture was taken during 1969, which is during the Civil Rights Movement in US history, she is most likely calling for the death of all white allies to the black rights cause. This is in poor taste.

"Hippie" is also derived from the word "hipster." If this photo is from 1969, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that the shirt might instead be generally referring to the counter-culture as a way of sarcastically saying, "Hey, you damn kids get off my lawn," rather than a militant call to arms against supporters of black rights.

This is not in poor taste.

[–]princessmud 0 points1 point ago

But Hippie was well known by it's own name. I won't argue that it comes from the same root, but there was a distinct difference between the two groups. Hippies weren't emulating anything, they just believed in freedom. Hipsters were seen as "traitors" because they were shedding their white culture to take on the jazz world.

[–]CaptInsane 0 points1 point ago

Ha. Thanks for this. I was thinking it was some kind of pant

[–]slouched -1 points0 points ago

very informative, but you just killed every possible joke in this thread ;[

[–]persistent_illusion 4 points5 points ago

It is not like they were jokes none of us have heard before--about a million fucking times.

[–]princessmud 1 point2 points ago

...I am so sorry. I didn't even think of that. CRAP.

[–]woahthereguys 12 points13 points ago

hipsters are not a new thing.

[–]jaker1013 3 points4 points ago

[–]winnar72 2 points3 points ago

Karma Decay is worth bookmarking. Curious where you got 1969 from.

[–]The_Doctor_00 9 points10 points ago

Hipsters have been around for a while, way back in the 40s when the term was first coined.

[–]DayOfTheDolphin 2 points3 points ago

Rubber wristbands were HUGE in 1969.

[–]slouched 2 points3 points ago

wow, the original hipster, shes so hipster she hated hipsters decades before hating hipsters was cool

[–]ta1ntdude 0 points1 point ago

I noticed she has a lance armstrong braclet on.... talk about someone doing it before it was cool.

[–]leadmagnate -1 points0 points ago

Not sure if old picture or instagram.

[–]peterquest 0 points1 point ago

Funny because anyone wearing that shirt, glasses, hat, or pants would probably get called a hipster and downvoted.

[–]JuliaSd 0 points1 point ago

She did not know what that means, just got a shirt as a gift and put it

[–]BonJarber 0 points1 point ago

That's so fucking hip

[–]tennisnipples -1 points0 points ago

[–]pinkyandthefloyd 0 points1 point ago

This would make a great t-shirt today. I would wear one.

[–]xantos_the_insane 0 points1 point ago

Hated Hipsters before it was cool!

[–]rudysax 0 points1 point ago

Everyone calm down and read some Kerouac

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]bulbulkaya16 0 points1 point ago

Is she a hipster for hatting hipsters before it was cool???!?!?!?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]cheeeeeese 1 point2 points ago

it's funny 'cause you dont realize you called black folk an "entrenched scourge".

[–]gcperez -2 points-1 points ago

Is it ironic that she wished hipsters' death way before everyone else?

[–]wittychef -3 points-2 points ago

Fuck yeah grandma.

[–]ProcrastinationMan -3 points-2 points ago

Oh god, I can just picture them wearing this shirt ironically... that's only going to make things worse.
