Old as dirt. But here's an explanation anyway.

Thanks to Robin Rumbolt for sharing this picture of a very scary situation. This pilot was quite close to a catastrophic situation on two fronts. One, a significant bump that unloaded that riser could have caused the riser to come completely out, leaving the pilot spiraling uncontrollably down on the remaining side. Two, the carabiner has dramatically less strength and a strong updraft could break it.

The carabiner's labeling shows it can withstand 20 KN of force closed and 10 KN if loaded sideways but this model does not show what it would be if open. Many do as the picture below shows (courtesy Stefan Obenauer and www.canyoneering.net).

I had a similar situation, only while being hand towed (luckily) while learning to paramotor. I forgot my six point check and when I landed the instructor dude pointed out my open carabiner. I'll never forget that again.

how many people are relying on this one carabiner? if its 1, only the uprise thing should matter. 10kN > 2000lbs. Even in that position, the steel isnt going to significantly deform anytime soon with < 200lbs (~800N)

had something similar happen when rappelling from a parking deck at my old college. The rope rapped around the carbine and it wasn't a locking model so it opened up. It makes you appreciate good gear.
