TIL in America, You have handicapped plates.

In Australia, you get stickers (like L-plates, for the front and rear window) that can easily be transferred between cars, in case a friend/family member needs to give a lift to a disabled friend in a different car.

The plates or the stickers? the stickers have a hologram and UV code and are government issue, they also have a registration number, If you ring a hotline you can report the number to discover if the sticker is legit.

The stickers. I meant you could easily sell a sticker (provided they can move between any vehicle as mentioned) to someone who could forever use said sticker to get handicapped spots, while having no handicap. I can easily imagine people here doing that, especially living in a shitty part of Los Angeles.

Whereas a plate cannot be transferred to another car, as if the plate is looked up it will not match the car and trouble will/can happen. The sticker wouldn't have this problem though, as it could be argued that the person recently used it to transfer someone who was handicapped or something.

Ah I see what you mean, Yes that is an issue, but it comes down to the fact that society will always have some dickheads. As a disabled person, you generally make sure you take the sticker with you and don't leave it or sell it to someone you know will miss use it in a way that will affect you and other disabled people.

Public shame is also another deterrent. Every time you see an able bodied person park in the handicapped spot, you just feel all the eyes of people judging them, and every now and then you get one outspoken person yell "Hey, what's wrong with you? why do you need that parking spot?"

Plates are common as hell. You see several every time you drive if you look. Anyone with a long term disability gets a plate. The card things are made for temporary stuff and traveling in other peoples vehicles.

it may depend on the state because while the plates aren't uncommon in NC the placards are much more common. Also the plates aren't given out you probably need to request it and maybe? pay extra.

My girlfriend's car doesn't have plates, only a placard and she's got a permanent disease. It may be different because she has a vanity plate though. it says CURE FA.

edit: after quick research in texas it's free but you can either get 1 placard and 1 plate or 2 placards.

We have both. You can get a plate for your car, and you also get a little sign that you can hang from your rear view mirror.

I've seen it used by people who are less than tech-savvy, but still want to be funny or something by using acronyms they know other people use. They probably read 'rofl' and 'rotfl' and would prefer the latter since it makes more sense for them to not omit 'the'.

Specifically, I've noticed parents/older people using strange variants of the popular acronyms.

It was most likely traded in at a Toyota dealership, then detailed and sold again at the same Toyota dealership, hence the dealership decal and license plate frame
