2Secs, I have it here in my folder of many things.

Ah, here we are.

http://i.imgur.com/sW1LN.jpg

Not sure they work, IMGUR went tits up just as I did it, so no idea.

[–]TheoQ99 66 points67 points ago

Those were a little bone-chilling, but very nice. Where did those come from?

[–]Big_Adam 43 points44 points ago

[–]LiquidSnape 6 points7 points ago

wish more people were GGG like you and post where they came from

[–]Big_Adam 2 points3 points ago

I didn't know till someone asked, I shall have to check in future beforehand.

[–]LiquidSnape 1 point2 points ago

I'm sorry when I see an imgur link I usually assume that it is not credited properly

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 41 points42 points ago

those are great, Big_Adam. Is this your work?

[–]Big_Adam 43 points44 points ago

Not mine, I have the talent of a spud, never did figure out where they are from.

googles image

Prevalently its from a zombie comic anthology called "Zombie Terrors" released in 2010.

http://www.asylumpress.com/titles/zombie-terrors

[–]McStubble 15 points16 points ago

I'm not sure if it was intentional or I'm just a big dummy, but I thought it was from the human's perspective for the first 2 panels.

[–]FlutterShy- 27 points28 points ago

It was quite the extended paraprosdokian, if you ask me.

If you assume it's from the perspective of the man, it gives you mad chills when you realize the truth.

[–]McStubble 3 points4 points ago

[–]FlutterShy- 10 points11 points ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraprosdokian

There you go, buddy. They're pretty entertaining and there are quite a few examples on the page.

[–]McStubble 1 point2 points ago

Thank you!

[–]Juggernath 1 point2 points ago

Now, word of the day is fun and all, but this word is so new and interesting to me it's gonna be word of the month.

[–]Dentarthurdent42 0 points1 point ago

I think you should get that looked at...

[–]Big_Adam 4 points5 points ago

That, my friend, is entirely the point.

[–]daedalus733 2 points3 points ago

Pretty sure it was intentional.

[–]bengringo2 2 points3 points ago

A reminder of how long its been since I've went to the comic book store. Oh how I miss you.

[–]Juggernath 2 points3 points ago

Damn, that was freaky. I'll have to check out more from that artist. Makes me think of one of the stories out of World War Z, where zombie killing is pretty much acceptable murder.

[–]anEnglishman 0 points1 point ago

I just went and bought that collection as that was pretty powerful stuff, thanks for the link.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 4 points5 points ago

thanks, scruffy01

[–]turkletom 3 points4 points ago

Even though I agree with you, in true human spirit, I must say "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" and challenge you to a fight.

That will teach those zombies!

[–]Lookmanospaces 21 points22 points ago

Stupid holier-than-thou zombies.

[–]fall_ark 33 points34 points ago

Fun fact: The word "zombie" sounds quite like the Chinese phrase "being smug/pretentious"

Gonna translate the shit out of this one. Thanks Jim, for this awesome strip.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 17 points18 points ago

That is so cool, fall_ark. One time somebody wrote out my last name in Chinese characters (Benton) and said the characters could be interpreted as "strong luck". Can you confirm this, or did it really say "creamed turnip" and they didn't want to tell me?

[–]fall_ark 14 points15 points ago

...said the characters could be interpreted as "strong luck".

Oh, damn. Haha, probably not. The commonly accepted translation would be 本顿. 本 can mean "original", "root". 顿 mostly means "sudden stop". They don't mean a lot in this sequence though.

"Jim", however, has the accepted translation of "吉姆", with "吉" meaning "lucky/fortunate" and "姆" a combination-only character that doesn't mean anything here.

Of course this is only in Mandarin. Not sure about Cantonese, or if he was using a customized way of transliteration. Maybe someone who can speak Cantonese can chime in and shed some light on this issue?

//EDIT: Preliminary search returns Cantonese transliteration to be "班顿", which doesn't mean anything as well.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 14 points15 points ago

Thanks! Maybe they were translating my entire name, and that's where the "luck" part comes from. I can't help but notice that my intuition suggested "turnip", a root vegetable.

[–]fall_ark 3 points4 points ago

That would be 罗伯(Rob), same sound with 萝卜(turnip). :P

[–]vanderZwan 11 points12 points ago

I smell a potential "I speak Mandarin. AMA about what your name means in Chinese."

[–]kantorekB14 4 points5 points ago

That would be great.

[–]fall_ark 0 points1 point ago

Probably too much trouble for something that mundane. Plus there's the whole time-zone thing. :P Maybe one day, maybe.

[–]snoharm 0 points1 point ago

Can I get one? Someone once told me "Sven" could be loosely transliterated as "Death-slice". True story?

[–]fall_ark 1 point2 points ago

Oh damn. You got a good name there, Mandarin translation wise. Though the "s" sound is usually the non-meaning "斯" (it can be used as a pronoun in classical writing, but that's about is), that sound has tons of homonyms in Chinese, and "死" (death) is one of them.

The commonly accepted transliteration is "斯文", which is also a word that means "cultured, refined", "文" being "article, writing, culture, gentle".

"死" has a different tone and is rarely used in name transliteration due to its meaning. The "slice" you're looking for is "刎". It does mean "slice", but more often than not it signifies "cut one's (own) throat".

So, more or less yes. All because Chinese has so many homonyms for certain sounds.

[–]snoharm 1 point2 points ago

I know you just told me "Kind of, because it's a flexible language", but what I heard was "Your name is Death-Slice and you should fight crime".

(Also, my sincere thanks).

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 14 points15 points ago

What do zombies plan to do when they finally eat everyone? Do they starve, or do they start raising us for brains? None of the movies ever get this far, but I seriously question their world order.

[–]Granite-M 19 points20 points ago

You're assuming that they plan anything, when planning is one of the least zombie-ish behaviors there is. Vampires sometimes have to deal with the same question, though. See "Daybreakers."

[–]Juggernath 6 points7 points ago

Daybreakers got terrible reviews but damn, it wasn't a bad movie. I quite enjoyed it. Then again I like some pretty bad movies so my opinions probably shouldn't be taken seriously.

[–]Blastface 0 points1 point ago

Gah that film was terrible, really enjoyed the first hour, then shit when fucking haywire and they spanked all the budget on that last horrifcially violent scene.

[–]Juggernath 0 points1 point ago

Like I said, I've bad taste in movies. Yes things went to shit after the first hour but what kept it enjoyable for me was the idea behind the movie. Now, I've only seen it once and I really liked it. Who's to say that if I watch it again, how my opinion of it will change.

[–]Blastface 0 points1 point ago

Fair point, I was pretty excited and I think it coulda gone better the ending left an awful lot unanswered

[–]Berdiie 0 points1 point ago

Also The Passage.

[–]JoustingTimberflake 13 points14 points ago

They wipe us out. They degrade eventually. Earth is still here. Nature can start anew.

[–]boredzo 6 points7 points ago

“28 Weeks Later” does mention that the zombies have started to cannibalize each other and otherwise die off from starvation.

[–]Demented_Hedgehog 1 point2 points ago

Upvote for the mention of a great film (which I watched for the second time today).

[–]Blastface 1 point2 points ago

But they are not "technically" zombies in the classical sense of the word. The infected are not dead, they are still alive, they just have no inhibitors to prevent them from reverting back to pure animalism, giving them the apprearance of zombies but really they are just really angry.

"Zombies" in the classical sense try to spread consume people whereas the infected simply try to spread the infection as opposed to actually consuming people.

[–]xjeeves 13 points14 points ago

This is very similar to the premise of I Am Legend (book not film)

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 7 points8 points ago

Is it? I should read the book. I saw the movie. I thought it was kinda ok. My favorite movie all year: MOONRISE KINGDOM. Really liked Avengers, and Spiderman, but was nuts about MOONRISE KINGDOM. Nice tangent, Jim.

[–]killerado 3 points4 points ago

The book is worth a read.

[–]Cptn_Hook 1 point2 points ago

Moonrise Kingdom was fantastic. Wes Anderson could have so easily started getting stale after his first couple films, but he just keeps heaping out fresh genius time after time.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 2 points3 points ago

I was that guy in theater that clapped unashamedly at the end, until finally others joined in. Favorite movie of the year so far.

[–]Cptn_Hook 2 points3 points ago

I took a girl, and I think it made her like me.

[–]Dragon_DLV 1 point2 points ago

What about Rampart?

Rampart rampart rampart? Rampart?

Let's get back to the topic at hand: Rampart.

[–]whencanistop 0 points1 point ago

I re-read the book for the second time recently and would definitely recommend it. Nothing like the film at all - Hollywood ruined the ending.

[–]elperroborrachotoo 0 points1 point ago

IIRC there was an edit that made the ending closer to the book (which I should read, too).

[–]Whoisjason 4 points5 points ago

(Ctl.+F - I am Legend) That's what I was thinking... kind of a spoiler to anyone who hasn't read though :p

[–]sirmuskrat 0 points1 point ago

The premise is sort of reinserted in the deleted scenes. It comes across as awkward and forced (in the movie, that is) and you can see why it didn't make the final cut.

[–]21XX 10 points11 points ago

Little reason to attack each other when you focus your aggression on another group. Zombies aren't enlightened; they're just racists. Still fun to shoot though.

Great comic!

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 3 points4 points ago

thanks,21XX. Hmm, racists without a race. Maybe Morbists? ( from latin "morbo" for illness. Yes, I took latin. Form taunting line here )

[–]Traejen 1 point2 points ago

That's always bothered me about zombies... why not just eat each other?

[–]FillInTheBlank 10 points11 points ago

Zombies are waaaaay past the 5 second rule.

[–]JoustingTimberflake 6 points7 points ago

Would you eat a zombie? Probably not. Why, then, would a zombie eat another zombie? Hypocrite.

[–]someguy945 4 points5 points ago

Shaun of the Dead acknowledges this quirky behavior with a scene in which the characters act like zombies to avoid being attacked.

[–]haiku_robot 4 points5 points ago

That's always bothered
me about zombies... why not
just eat each other?

[–]iProcreate 12 points13 points ago

as always, you do a great job making these comics. Sooo where's our iOS/Android apps so we can read these on the go? ; )

I wouldn't mind donating.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 22 points23 points ago

thanks, iProcreate. I dunno. I'm pretty sloppy at the business model. I just like to draw and post draw and post.

[–]iProcreate 7 points8 points ago

Woooo JimKB responded!

blush

[–]asmallmoon 2 points3 points ago

Partially the reason I like Jim so much, he takes the time to respond to quite a few people. Even if its just a thanks it means a lot to the fans.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 4 points5 points ago

very kind of you, asmallmoon. thanks.

[–]FreeDirt 4 points5 points ago

You seem genuinely nice, WILL YOU SIGN MY MOTHER?

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 13 points14 points ago

Sure, FreeDirt, just hold her up here...a little higher...to Mrs.Dirt , the salt of the earth, your pal, Jim Benton. There you go. Don't let her tits rub together or that will smear.

[–]iProcreate 1 point2 points ago

His really good, yet simple comics help too :)

[–]Beakerbite 0 points1 point ago

Honestly when I started reading your comment I thought that iProcreate was the name of the app for iOS he was talking about. Then I read on and grew sad.

[–]poiro 3 points4 points ago

I just use Google reader to stay up to date with any webcomics

[–]attrition0 3 points4 points ago

To add to what /u/poiro said, here is the actual link required to hook up into an RSS reader such as google reader:

[–]hogofwar 4 points5 points ago

Left 4 Dead 1/2 says otherwise about Zombies attacking each other.

You can sometimes see idle zombies attack each other and of course, Bile Bombs!

[–]AlexanderSalamander 4 points5 points ago

Next you'll be telling us we should all become cybermen!

[–]doubleas21380 4 points5 points ago

Reminds me of the lyrics to "Rats" from Pearl Jam.

[–]LabKitty 0 points1 point ago

TIL: Zombies don't lick the dirt off Elijah Wood's feet.

[–]Maticus 3 points4 points ago

Zombies are a great metaphor for collectivism. It is unintended by Romero, but it is something you stumbled upon. Once movie creators realized this, they tried to "humanize" the zombies to make them "good" if you will. For example Bub in Day of the Dead, or Barbra's sympathy for them at the end of Night of the Living Dead remake.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

I love you Jim.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 14 points15 points ago

thanks, jasontimmur

[–]alphazero924 18 points19 points ago

Well this is awkward. Jason just confessed his love to you, and all you can say back is thanks.

[–]daybreaker 12 points13 points ago

JimKB loves jasontimmur, but he's not in love with him.

[–]jbaum517 8 points9 points ago

Starring Steve Carell

[–]BestPseudonym 2 points3 points ago

He could have gone with "I know."

[–]Costa21 2 points3 points ago

That's my thing with zombies I'd like some explanation/lore for. How does a zombie know not to fuck with other zombies. Do normal humans give off a particular smell, is it simply the way we look? What is stopping them from eating each other, especially say a zombie that has only been a zombie for like 3 minutes?

[–]Blastface 0 points1 point ago

I think it's the same concept as to why people hate wasps but not bees.

They they look very similar and are generally very similar in terms of their actions but you would not call a bee a wasps because they are very different, different enough that you need to be considerably more careful around wasps.

Humans and zombies look quite similar and zombies not being the most bright creatures can still tell the difference. Kinda in the same way you can tell the difference between black, white and asian people but you know we are all part of the same species.

TL;DR: Bees, wasps, black, white, asisan, zombies all different

[–]josefnpat 5 points6 points ago

I added you a long while back, and love every comic you post. Any chance you'll start a website, or maybe at least a tumblr?

[–]dibsODDJOB 5 points6 points ago

Here's a Tumblr and a Website.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 11 points12 points ago

Thanks, josefnpat. hmmm. that's not my tumblr. but here are just a few comics on my site. And here is my sketch-of-the-day ( often pointless ) and my page here on good ol' reddit.

[–]ManCaveDaily 1 point2 points ago

Food for thought.

And that food...is brains.

[–]mechroid 1 point2 points ago

I think a zombie driving a Prius would cause a smugness singularity.

[–]technoSurrealist 1 point2 points ago

Hah, this is awesome. I love the last panel especially.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] -1 points0 points ago

thankls, technoSurrealist

[–]technoSurrealist 0 points1 point ago

no probls!

[–]Aedan91 1 point2 points ago

They are better people than us

There's a satire in there somewhere...

[–]fiftypoints 1 point2 points ago

The warm ones shoot us

Do they think they are better?

We only fear them

[–]Hart_Les 1 point2 points ago

To the OP, I have you tagged as 'The man, the myth, the legend." It's nice seeing your tags come up in the wild, and then you wonder why you tagged them that way in the first place.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] -2 points-1 points ago

I hope you like them, Hart_Les.

[–]RickRussellTX 1 point2 points ago

Zombies'll swing back to the belief that they can make people... better.

I do not hold to that.

[–]Jsleezy 1 point2 points ago

Some zombies attack eachother...

I'm just trying to make me feel better about myself.

[–]adammcbomb 1 point2 points ago

good lead up. great punch line.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] -1 points0 points ago

glad you liked it, adammcbomb

[–]adammcbomb 0 points1 point ago

man im really sorry people are downvoting you for thanking me for liking your comic. this is how reddit has evolved lately. you should work in a comic about how hive minded and hypocritical reddit has become. peace out Jim Benton!

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 1 point2 points ago

Eh, what are ya gonna do? Some people think it's stupid that I respond to people. Some people don't want me to post original content at all. Just how it goes.

[–]adammcbomb 0 points1 point ago

true enough. here's a photo joke i took today and posted an hour ago. i dont think its genius but i like it. immediately someone didnt get it and downvoted it into oblivion. perhaps you'll enjoy it . "Copy Paste"

[–]Anonymousvoter 1 point2 points ago

great illustration with a great new angle on the motives of zombies

[–]Mysteryman64 0 points1 point ago

[–]quippleyThe Wizard of Quippley 0 points1 point ago

what a thoughtful sentiment!

[–]dhvl2712 0 points1 point ago

This is funny and all but I just can't understand the obsession with Zombies everybody has.

[–]Blastface 0 points1 point ago

The concept of the zombie apocalypse gives people the option and opportunity to really see if they could survive. Many people that feel spurned by this society feel they would blossom and excel in a situation where they were truly put to the test.

Zombies are the ultimate enemy. Not only can we kill them without regret (they are already dead) we are also pitted against something that has no feelings, they cannot be reasoned with and they cannot be bargained with. They do not submit to peace talks and they do not break, they don't run from battle they simply wish to consume. So when pitted against an enemy like this people are offered: Survive of Die. It is my humble opinion that many people enjoy this clear distinction as they have very little else to worry about.

The zombie is one of the only enemy that we can say "they have no loved ones". Also "they will not flinch; it's me or them". With any human enemy, we face the possibility of them having an attack of regret or us being consumed with guilt, with zombies not so much.

Also with the whole collapse of society thing, people are offered a chance to start over, they can reinvent themselves as anything they wish, giving further hope they they don't have to deal with their current bullshit anymore.

TL;DR: zombies represent the ultimate escapism, we can't reason with them so violence seems legit.

[–]LaBambas -1 points0 points ago

Mais non. They're not better people than us because all of those things aren't traits of people. That would be like saying that a tree or a tortoise is a better person than us. The very features that we find virtuous in them are the features that make them decisively unlike us.

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 1 point2 points ago

A tortoise is a better person than us.

[–]BenNCM -2 points-1 points ago

this is a shit post

[–]BenNCM 0 points1 point ago

[–]JimKBJim Benton Cartoons[S] 0 points1 point ago

OP understands your opinion.

[–]arachnophilia -1 points0 points ago

zombie movies are a product of the cold war. zombies are communists.

[–]Berdiie 3 points4 points ago

Flipped argument: Modern zombie movies are the product of a lazy, materially driven society. Zombies are the capatilist horde swarming through Wal-Mart on Black Friday, to the Apple store on new release day.

It can be both and it's one of the reasons that the archetype continues.

[–]arachnophilia 1 point2 points ago

the remake of dawn of the dead, largely credited as responsible for revitalizing the genre, takes place in a mall.

[–]FatZombieMama 0 points1 point ago

Zombies represent death.

"Zombies are our destiny writ large. Slow and steady in their approach, weak, clumsy, often absurd, the zombie relentlessly closes in, unstoppable, intractable. However (and herein lies the sublime artfulness of the slow zombie), their ineptitude actually makes them avoidable, at least for a while. If you're careful, if you keep your wits about you, you can stave them off, even outstrip them - much as we strive to outstrip death. Drink less, cut out red meat, exercise, practice safe sex; these are our shotguns, our cricket bats, our farmhouses, our shopping malls. However, none of these things fully insulates us from the creeping dread that something so witless, so elemental may yet catch us unawares - the drunk driver, the cancer sleeping in the double helix, the legless ghoul dragging itself through the darkness towards our ankles." -- Simon Pegg

[–]perazini 0 points1 point ago

This are awesome! Some of your comics remember me to Quino, a Argentinian guy. Keep them coming! You have a new fan.

[–]Lawsuitup -1 points0 points ago

The fundamental flaw here is that they do discriminate. They don't eat zombies put eat non-infected flesh. That right there is discrimination, all on the basis of my flesh.
