Symmetrical book stacking. Just like the Philadelphia mass turbulence of 1947.

Right. No human would stack books like this.

[–]Obvious_Troll_Post 83 points84 points ago

Decommissioned, not abandoned.

[–]blitzkrieg3 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, you're not even being a troll here. "Abandoned" is a poor choice of words. It's still used to turn around the 6 train.

[–]Obvious_Troll_Post 2 points3 points ago

You think I'm going to troll just because of my name? That's shallow.

[–]bricardo 12 points13 points ago

Trains go through it.

[–]piasenigma 19 points20 points ago

The lights are always on apparently; hooked into the grid.

The reason these gorgeous looking stations are not in use is because the trains we have now-a-days are slightly bigger, which causes them to make GOD AWFUL SCREECHING noises as they travel the tracks.

[–]helpful_grey 18 points19 points ago

I actually like the screechy sounds. Living in the city makes you like weird shit, I guess.

[–]Givants 6 points7 points ago

It got "abandoned" because it was deemed unsafe. I remember reading that there were a lot of accidents because of the curvature of the exit. You can clearly see that if there was a train stopped there, there would be a noticeable gap in between the station and the train's steps, causing people to fall or get their foot stuck in there.

[–]jzwinck 4 points5 points ago

So pretty much the same as a typical station in London! Union Square in NYC has a curvy platform and they added moving edges to make it safer. Or chop off your toes.

[–]gutnor 2 points3 points ago

They could simply have put some sign saying "Mind the gap" like in London.

[–]wibz 347 points348 points ago

So beautiful station. It's filmed in this video: https://vimeo.com/18280328 (~3min in)

[–]siouxiside 104 points105 points ago

The video is thrilling, especially the last part where he scales the bridge. I highly recommend checking it out (especially in HD).

[–]DownvoteAttractor 55 points56 points ago

He does all this shit and is scared of getting into trouble. All he needs to do is buy a fluro vest and problem solved.

[–]Tom_Anks 29 points30 points ago

Love that video! Are there any similar? I really like things like this.

[–]PissFuckinDrunk 17 points18 points ago

That video is AWESOME. I am so into exactly what he was talking about and have also committed my share of illegal things to view really amazing stuff.

[–]HorseMeatSandwich 6 points7 points ago

Wow, I've been on the edge of my seat the whole time. This is fascinating. I'm a native San Franciscan, and I'm a big San Francisco history buff. The histories of American cities and their architecture and infrastructure are just incredible. Not quite on par with many cities of Europe, but fascinating, nonetheless. Thanks for posting this video!

[–]whostolemypancake 59 points60 points ago

The old Pneumatic Transit! It's still here!

[–]GReggzz732 24 points25 points ago

What did I tell you?! The phone lines are over there!!

[–]dunnowins 345 points346 points ago

This is under city hall in New York. They wanted to reopen it as part of the transit museum or something and you know why they didnt? Concern about terrorist threats/bombings against city hall. It's a damn shame.

EDIT: for everyone trying to correct me and saying that its closed because the track is not suited for modern trains and all of that....yes that is true. That is why it is not used as an actual functioning train station any more. However, to address the point I made, it was going to be made a part of the NYC Transit Museum but was deemed to be a high risk location by Rudy Giuliani.

[–]FCBSERIS 11 points12 points ago

here is a picture from it's construction:

http://www.shorpy.com/node/7609?size=_original#caption

[–]Yserbius 9 points10 points ago

According to my New York rail nut father in law, it just was never a convenient station to use since the Brooklyn Bridge station is right next door. Also, most new cars can still go through it, just some newer cars are narrower and there is a huge gap between the car floor and the station floor.

[–]joehouin 73 points74 points ago

Apparently it's not super hard to get to see. I think the 1 or the 2,3 lines go through it. They kick everyone of for "last stop" and then the train loops through this station to go back north. I've heard sometimes people will either sneak on or try and convince the conductor to just let em ride through.

Also apparently the reason it's not used anymore is becasue the turn is to dramatic for the newer( later than the 70's?)/longer cars. Huge gap between platform and doors. Guess they didn't feel like installing those sliding ones like at some other curved platforms.

[–]xymurr 134 points135 points ago

It is the 6 train actually, not the 1/2/3. If you stay on the downtown 6 train past city hall/brooklyn bridge you can see the station. I've done this a couple times and it is a nice thing to see. However, beware that it is LOUD.

[–]mleah 21 points22 points ago

Why is it loud?

[–]77Columbus 63 points64 points ago

The sound has to do with the curve of the track that was originally meant for older smaller cars. The newer modern cars are bigger and cause more friction when going along this curve resulting in the loud noise.

[–]mleah 13 points14 points ago

Oh, duh, I wasn't thinking about the friction of the longer car in the curve. Thanks!

[–]xymurr 10 points11 points ago

As joehuin said, the turn is sharp and the trains are longer than they were previously.

[–]ThatsLogical 7 points8 points ago

It's really cool the first time. The lights aren't usually on like this, though. Just the ones above the main arch.

[–]titan413 8 points9 points ago

It also looks very nice in the picture, but the 3 or 4 times I've shown it to people, it's been covered in random construction junk.

Still, it's cool as hell that we can still see it at all.

[–]joehouin 12 points13 points ago

Thanks for clearing that up. I was being to lazy to google it. How did you get to go through? Do you ask or just hang out on the train?

[–]xymurr 32 points33 points ago

I've just stayed on the train. No one bothered me about it.

[–]aichJ81 40 points41 points ago

lol! Oddly enough, "It's ok. I'm from the internets" isn't a convincing line :D

[–]Bureaucromancer 14 points15 points ago

Except that IIRC MTA policy for the last few years has been that it IS ok.

[–]xymurr 13 points14 points ago

Persistence! You are definitely allowed to ride around. Every time I've done it has been after 10 pm if that helps you out at all.

[–]kevonicus 2 points3 points ago

Did he finally give in and teach you how to move things by channelling your rage like he did with Sam Wheat?

[–]mistahspecs 4 points5 points ago

That's strange to me, I've never had to leave the train. I've only been in NY for about 9 months and have already seen it a dozen times or so. You can open the door and peek your head out for a better view too.

[–]NueDumaz 13 points14 points ago

The sweeper guy just wanted to be by himself so he could take his clothes off.

[–]mdezzi 11 points12 points ago

i can confirm this; a few of us did it this weekend. you just sit there when they tell you its the last stop. you get a few odd looks from other people leaving the train.

[–]Rappaccini 34 points35 points ago

Next time go with a group of friends and dress in conspicuously unfashionable clothes. Make "quiet" remarks about "muggles" as the others exit the train.

EDIT: just realized the stop is approaching Brooklyn. No one will notice if you wear weird clothes. Resort to full cloaks.

[–]amandatoryy 2 points3 points ago

someone below posted that they saw it covered in debris and such, was it this past weekend?

[–]mdezzi 6 points7 points ago

i was unimpressed. The train doesnt slow down and the lights are off in the station. Basically we saw a flash of light, the "Main Street" sign and staircase and i thought there was a bunch of construction equipment.

[–]theroarer 53 points54 points ago

There was a mini documents about new York places, leme see if I can find it. It is featured and it shows how to get there.

Edit: Wibz posted it first a little ways down. https://vimeo.com/18280328

[–]maximilliontee 9 points10 points ago

That video was incredible! Urban Spelunking...

[–]monsonman45 8 points9 points ago

Mind blown. Must climb everything in NY now.

[–]Mugros 3 points4 points ago

When it's done without consent, why are the lights on and did he get sued for the video?

[–]theroarer 2 points3 points ago

As for the lights, I believe because some of the municipal work has to be done through there, and as you can see there are trains that operate in that area still. Someone mentioned you can ask your conductor if you can pass through that section.

As for getting sued, I'm not certain. I know the fellow that the camera operator is following has been arrested and fined and such.

[–]sasquatcheds 9 points10 points ago

Apparently you can still get tours of the station, but you have to be a member of the MTA museum.

[–]neatchee 27 points28 points ago

As joehouin points out in a deeper comment, this is the subway station beneath City Hall.

Why is it abandoned? Well, when the MTA (that's the Metropolitan Transit Authority for those not familiar with NYC) started rolling out the newer, longer train cars in the 70s and 80s, they found that the curvature of the track and platform at City Hall Station was too much for passengers to safely enter and exit the train cars. The gap between the platform and the car doors was very wide, and they couldn't develop an effective sliding platform like they did for some other stations (e.g. Union Square 4/5/6 platform)

As mentioned by Joehouin, if you're lucky and you ask nicely, you can sometimes get the train conductor to let you ride through City Hall Station, since the 6 train still uses the station to turn around at the end of the downtown line.

[–]fezzikola 13 points14 points ago

You don't need a nice conductor, it's MTA policy to let you stay on while the train flips.

[–]neatchee 7 points8 points ago

Are you sure? I'd love to see this policy heh. During my 6 years in NYC I tried to see City Hall Station 3 or 4 times that way and was only allowed to stay on the train once.

This station is an amazing example of the the famous Guastavino vaulting. The Guastavino brothers made vaults out of thin tile and mortar with no blueprints, no support structures and no scaffolding.

[–]James-VZ 3 points4 points ago

My great uncle Donald built the transit museum in NYC and has a lot of stories about places like this. He used to hide the cars he wanted to save in these kinds of places, swapping their numbers with less important but similar cars. Very clandestine stuff that could have gotten him fired, actually.

Anyway, he's a cool guy. Here's an interview he did with the New York Times a few years back: http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/21/sports/baseball-subway-series-tunnel-visions-subway-cars-1950-s-evoke-nostalgia-too.html

[–]Spiffstered 2 points3 points ago

It's the City Hall stop, and you can get to it by staying on the 45 downtown brooklyn bridge stop. The subway will go past the station when changing to uptown.

[–]buriedunderbricks 2 points3 points ago

I remember seeing a video of underground Ny, this guy goes into a bunch of places rarely seen, rarely recorded. This was one of the spots he went to. http://youtu.be/vWF3IDk9Gek

[–]quinofking 2 points3 points ago

why does an "abandoned" subway look nicer than the subway i take everyday???

[–]packetfire 2 points3 points ago

NOT Abandoned at all.

Just take the 6 train south, and when the announcement tells you that you have reached the last stop, stay on the train. The train goes from the modern "Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall" station, through the station pictured, the old "City Hall" station, loops around the loop, and comes back to the modern station, now facing North.

The squealing of the wheels is pretty loud, so consider earplugs. On second thought, use them everywhere in the NYC subway system!

[–]Emerica586 2 points3 points ago

[–]dhoyle19 2 points3 points ago

It was abandoned because the people that designed it made the curve of the track too sharp, causing a hideously loud screech as the train came into the station. It was so bad, people just stopped going. As a result, they closed that station. Now the only was for civilians to get there is by (illegally) walking along the tracks until they reach the station. Trains still pass through the station.

TL:DR Abandoned due to poor engineering.

[–]mblitch 13 points14 points ago

The subway is not abandoned, but the station isn't used. Downvoted for inaccurate title. It is the city hall station at the end of an active line. Take the 6 train to Brooklyn Bridge, the last stop, but instead of getting off, stay on. The train will then loop around through this station and start heading back down the line.

[–]zthirtytwo 5 points6 points ago

Although this one is closed, it's nice to see not all the subways here are covered in trash, and stinking of hobo piss. I wish all the subways looked this nice.

just an fyi, there is an /r/abandonedporn

[–]kvail90 1 point2 points ago

They shut it down because of the curved platform, the gap between the subway cart and platform was too great and people fell into it constantly. One of my professors filmed part of a documentary on this. Really cool.

It reminds me of the abandoned rail terminal in Arkham City.

[–]steakmane 1 point2 points ago

Oh! This look's like the subway that Andrew Wonder explored with his friend when they filmed "Undercity"

[–]colossus3200 1 point2 points ago

Glad to see the turtles are still able to afford electricity

[–]crocodilesareforwimp 1 point2 points ago

How come this abandoned subway is so much nicer than the bandoned ones? (b.c. obviously that's the word for the opposite of abandoned)

[–]yarrrJake 1 point2 points ago

I saw this in a Ninja Turtle movie.

Where is the pink slime?

[–]Art_VandelaySC 1 point2 points ago

And there's no graffiti? I'm calling bullshit.

[–]Zerofate 1 point2 points ago

Anyone who's seen Speedgrapher knows where this is going...

RAPTURE?!

[–]nickkbmod 1 point2 points ago

Welcome to rapture

[–]bugzrrad 1 point2 points ago

wasn't this on the front page like 2 days ago?

[–]shivvvy 1 point2 points ago

I saw this a few days ago when I was looking up info on Lower Bay station in Toronto. City hall station is much better looking (probably because it's decommissioned and not abandoned)

[–]Just_another_man 1 point2 points ago

Not abandoned, just not open to the public.

[–]Na7eO 1 point2 points ago

Totally thought of Ninja Turtles and went to google it to remind myself of what their subway station looked like. Turns out, this same image comes up under the search, but their station looks similar sort of.

[–]VengefulOctopus 1 point2 points ago

You mean, underground hobo mansion.

[–]knobbysideup 1 point2 points ago

Would make a great place for cyclists to safely commute.

[–]notsonostalgic 1 point2 points ago

figures the most beatiful one nota even in use

[–]golouisville 1 point2 points ago

I believe that splinter can be found hanging out down there.

[–]TheUltimatePoet 1 point2 points ago

Why can't the bums live there, eh? Nooo, let them live where everyone is walking all the time.

[–]Crenox 1 point2 points ago

That reminded me of Harry Potter for some reason, did anyone else get reminded of Harry Potter or was it just me?

[–]Katarzzle 1 point2 points ago

Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze seems a lot more probable now.

[–]PeetaMellark 1 point2 points ago

The trains actually run by there to make the loop. However, you can't get off.

there is also a tour that goes back there, but you have to pay for it. So riding the train is more cost effective.

Fucking pathway to the Turkish baths

[–]queen_frostine 1 point2 points ago

Saw this picture, then came here to upvote every single one of you motherfuckers who even mentioned Ghostbusters 2 (solely on the grounds that both of them are my favorite movies). I'm the Oprah of upvotes today, yall.

[–]uknowscotty 1 point2 points ago

Here is a video of it and other places. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWF3IDk9Gek

Awesome pic! Did you take this? What's the camera. Looks like a 5d mk ii at a long exposure.
