Just gunna give this guy some views. It's how to blow those rings underwater.

[–]havestronaut 110 points111 points ago

My dad used to teach scuba lessons in the 70s and taught me a better way, IMO. With great force, you sharply say "TOO". Almost like you're shooting a blowgun. The tongue comes into play momentarily (imagine you're spitting a sunflower seed husk off your lip), but you don't need to stick it out for as long as this kid is. The real force comes from the chest ( the "OO" should be deep). Once you've mastered it, you can have unbroken rings that rise and grow to be 8 feet wide before dispersing (if you're deep enough). It's a ton of fun.

[–]jooze 140 points141 points ago

Wow I look stupid right now.

[–]robtheviking 9 points10 points ago

It's a good thing I can practice without looking at my computer screen underwater because I have a portable smartphone! Here goes!

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Genesis557 43 points44 points ago

if I say "fus ro dah" will I get an 18 foot, unbroken vortex?

[–]Comintern 9 points10 points ago

yes

[–]Genesis557 7 points8 points ago

My life is complete.

[–]Soniclightsaber 2 points3 points ago

The Thu'um in this one is strong.

[–]lyanocoste 5 points6 points ago

I'm so excited to return to my riverside campsite.

[–]Jayfire137 2 points3 points ago

Now I can practice my dragon shouts and look cool!!

[–]4zuresky 2 points3 points ago

I just tried practicing in front of my computer for some odd reason and I spat all over my computer screen :(

[–]carpeggio -1 points0 points ago

Saying "Too" makes sharp contact with the what's called the alveolar ridge (the bump behind the teeth). Which is an uneven contact from a blowing a bubble perspective. I think saying "THOO" would produce a more even result. The tongue pulls back from a balanced position between the teeth.

[–]blackmarketdolphins 0 points1 point ago

"chest" = diaphragm

[–]EricTheWeirdo 105 points106 points ago

I just spat all over my screen.

[–]HoradricNoob 54 points55 points ago

That's no spit.

Why is your computer underwater?

[–]I_wwebsite 152 points153 points ago

Because he is surfing the web.

[–]the_k_i_n_g 23 points24 points ago

And the web gets scarier the deeper you get.

[–]LTSIII 6 points7 points ago

BOOOO! upvote, but BOOOO!

[–]Ro11ingThund3r 50 points51 points ago

[–]zosoyoung 2 points3 points ago

I thought you we're kidding until I watched it and did the same thing.

[–]Nj_all_day 20 points21 points ago

Wow, that was a pretty good tutorial, can't wait to try it. On a side note:

This was filmed on an iPhone with a lifeproof case.

I want that case.

[–]Unidan 9 points10 points ago

It's only 80 bucks or so, not bad, honestly!

[–]Zosoer 4 points5 points ago

Get it from AT&T or Best Buy(just not EBay) and they will replace the cases when they get worn down for free forever. Lifetime warranty.

[–]Stoopid1 2 points3 points ago

False:

at&t warranties the first 30 days. Lifeproof warranties the first 90 days & offers up to 1 yr with online registration. (Must dunk test case before installation & registration.)

[–]Zosoer 3 points4 points ago

Guess att rep lied to me.

[–]errorsix 4 points5 points ago

It would be good to have just in case.

[–]Amazianman53 3 points4 points ago

"I'm using a brick to hold me under." my fucked up brain wanted to see him get stuck underwater >.<

[–]OnlySanePanda 10 points11 points ago

Nice try, Mrs. McPhail.

[–]DeadManJohn 5 points6 points ago

Irrefutable proof I'm not, my username isn't DeadManSamuel. Checkmate.

[–]Bandit1379 2 points3 points ago

There are different ways to do it, I've been able to do them since I was a kid, and my method is different than his.

[–]ch00d 1 point2 points ago

My sister just walked in on me doing that...

[–]Big_Black_Wang 4 points5 points ago

screw that, why didn't he chase the girls, man?

I was scuba diving once and the dive master I was with blew a ring just like this, except it was roughly 60 feet down, and the torus must have been >15 feet across once it hit the surface. It was amazing. I have tried many times since but to no avail.

EDIT: This is what I'm talking about. It's super duper awesome

EDIT 2: Turns out dolphins are way better at this

[–]johnydeluca 41 points42 points ago

Wow the two ones colliding in this video look great.

[–]veterejf 15 points16 points ago

I just woah'd out loud.

[–]McBurger 5 points6 points ago

I just woah'd but it was in my head

[–]ElNewbs 16 points17 points ago

[–]BigClifty 3 points4 points ago

I am 80% certain that the diver is a wizard.

[–]MoarVespenegas 1 point2 points ago

I studied fluid mechanics and I still have no idea what's going on.

[–]Khalexus 3 points4 points ago

Holy shit dolphins are awesome!

I mean besides all the raping and stuff.

[–]cottonbiscuit 4 points5 points ago

I work at an aquarium. Our beluga whales blow bubble rings just like this but then they'll blow more bubbles into the ring to make it larger and larger. It's beautiful.

[–]eelassirak 1 point2 points ago

Do an AMA!!

[–]theycallmealex 1 point2 points ago

[–]Razmii 0 points1 point ago

What is the technique to this super duper awesomeness

edit* nevermind the comment below this one answers this question

[–]EnormousEpeen -2 points-1 points ago

Like blowing smoke O's. Stop being so healthy and take up cigarettes.

[–]Archany 0 points1 point ago

Is it the same technique as smoke rings? I can blow rings like a boss, was hoping it'd be the same concept because I'm going to the pool later today and was gonna try it

[–]EnormousEpeen 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure but by the looks of it I would think so. How did you make out?

[–]Archany 0 points1 point ago

It's similar to blowing smoke rings, but not identical, I spent about an hour messing around with them and got some alright ones towards the end, gonna keep working on it

[–]EnormousEpeen 0 points1 point ago

Cool I haven't been to a pool yet, but I'll let you know when I try. I can do savage smoke rings... So got a good torus feeling. Cheers! And don't forget to come up for air ;)

Didn't expect to see the tsar bomb after some cute dolphins! Great video though.

[–]ganymede_boy 59 points60 points ago

Any idea what the object is that is inserted into the vortex/bubble?

[–]fumblor 163 points164 points ago

I believe that is a Gatorade cap.

[–]had3l 31 points32 points ago

Wow damn... I thought it was a rubber ball.

Swimmer Derp's SQUIRTLE used Aqua Ring!

It's super effective!

[–]ganymede_boy 3 points4 points ago

My first thought was "Freakin dudes at Northwestern always with the big brains." But the "N" isn't quite right (though the color appears to be). Any other guesses as to the institution?

The bottom of the Naval Academy Diving pool in Anapolis Maryland.

[–]P1NGU 7 points8 points ago

Okay, that one was easy. What was the guy's mother's maiden name?

[–]Grandmaofhurt 0 points1 point ago

Yea, I had too many naval academy ensigns at my old command to not know the different USNA insignia.

[–]bojang 0 points1 point ago

The diving well doesn't have an N star?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]bojang 0 points1 point ago

This isn't true anymore. They changed the requirements to be more in line with fleet standards. Now if you don't jump you get a D in second class swimming, but you can still graduate without doing the 10 meter.

[–]darthbaggs 8 points9 points ago

This is the diving well of the pool complex in Lejeune Hall at the US Naval Academy. Those are two former varsity swimmers (graduated and are commissioned now).

[–]mrmailbox 3 points4 points ago

What's really strange is there are no lane lines at the bottom. So it's a separate diving well, meaning it's probably part of a really nice pool.

[–]StandingTheGaff 5 points6 points ago

Hey look at you with the noticing stuff; good call!

[–]DankBeard 2 points3 points ago

I'm not sure, but they are wearing speedos.

[–]JustinWaylonM 1 point2 points ago

Twist, it's actually a Z.

[–]Dickfore 0 points1 point ago

Our brains aren't the only things that are big.

Our debt is fucking enormous.

[–]shortbuswizard 2 points3 points ago

How did the guy on the bottom do that?

[–]jacksonattack 11 points12 points ago

They're colloquially called bubble rings and it's a trick a lot of swimmers and divers know how to do. You essentially go rigid with your back to the bottom of the pool or body of water you're in and puff your cheeks out before moving your mouth like you're saying "boom." You have to focus on expelling air directly from the circle shaped opening you've made with your gob, and you have to put a good amount of force into it. It takes practice, but anyone can do it.

[–]Reggie_Dunlop 2 points3 points ago

Excellent description, although needing practice (at least for me) wasn't an issue. I learned how to do this on my own as a lifeguard, and I used to have a blast laying on the bottom of the deep end and watching them go up.

[–]harmonicoasis 0 points1 point ago

Interesting, I always just blew out while making the popping sound with my mouth.

[–]LegendaryLuigi -1 points0 points ago

I just followed these directions and ended up spitting on my computer screen by accident

[–]trpnblies7 8 points9 points ago

You really shouldn't put your computer under water.

[–]TooHappyFappy 0 points1 point ago

Nah, he's using one of those old waterproof computers. Haven't seen one since aught-4. I thought they were extinct.

[–]Arandanos 2 points3 points ago

Could someone please go all /r/askscience on this shit?

[–]dungeons_and_flagons 1 point2 points ago

Are they in the pool at Northwestern? That looks like a purple 'n' to me...

[–]darthbaggs 8 points9 points ago

That's the US Naval Academy. Its the diving well in Lejeune Hall.

[–]MedSchoolOrBust 1 point2 points ago

[–]LunarBears 1 point2 points ago

[–]leXus30 1 point2 points ago

What is the thingy that is spinning?

[–]MrSovereign 1 point2 points ago

I'm a competitive swimmer and have been doing this for years. I have taught many people my technique and its worked every time. There are a couple steps.

•Have your head as horizontal to the waters surface as possible. This step is critical. I have seen a lot of people attempt ring bubbles horizontally and it never works.

•Slightly stick your tongue out in a pointing manner, like what you would do to a crush you had in elementary. I would say only 3 to 4 centimeters from your lips to the tip of the tongue.

•lastly blow air out softly, not too hard or the circular smooth shape you want will disbursed. Basically you want enough air to where your cheeks fill followed by a gentle force of air.

No one is perfect and it will take a couple tries. If you follow my steps I guarantee you will achieve the perfect ring bubble!

[–]Pessle 0 points1 point ago

Hey something cool that I can actually do! It's quite similar to blowing bubbles with bubblegum, it's all about the tongue, you just have to do it a lot quicker like you're spitting out the air.

[–]Are_Six 0 points1 point ago

Looks deeper than 15ft.

[–]Viend 0 points1 point ago

Is that when you say "POP" underwater? I've never gotten it to work.

[–]Bosticles 0 points1 point ago

How the fuck do they do that? I spent almost an hour in the pool trying to figure it out. And people nicknamed me Gandalf because of my Hookah smoke rings...I feel like less of a man for failing at this bubble bullshit.

[–]cvtopher12 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much exactly the same as blowing smoke rings, you just need to put some force into it to get it spinning. Sort of like screaming "POP"

[–]UKMansonite 0 points1 point ago

Do these guys have gills?

[–]CrazyMonkey025 0 points1 point ago

Why don't the rings float to the top as fast as plain bubbles? How do the rings stay under for as long as they do???

[–]NPHisKing 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry, what?

[–]iSago 2 points3 points ago

It's demonstrating how coherent structures form in high reynolds number fluids, as well as how long they last (much more than the average eddy rotation time) and how they propagate through the liquid. One can also see how resistance to flow (due to viscosity) causes the ring to spread and become wider.

[–]NPHisKing 4 points5 points ago

Oh, well now it makes sense.

[–]Moosebomber 0 points1 point ago

What the hell is that and how did he do it

[–]harmonicoasis 0 points1 point ago

If you can make the popping sound with your mouth you can do this, you just have to blow out at the same time. And be able to hold your breath for the requisite amount of time.

[–]Uncanny_Nipple_Spray 0 points1 point ago
