This sign is actually not ambiguous at all. The rule is that a pronoun refers to the closest antecedent that makes sense before the pronoun. So 'it' here certainly refers to the poo. If the sentence were "If your dog poos, place it in the litter bin" then this picture would make perfect sense. But because the verb is "does" and the object of that is "a poo" then the next pronoun, if not otherwise clarified, refers to the poo.

A failure of the English language is that we don't have gender neutral terms like he/she. It is the closest it comes, but it suggests a complete lack of gender, not just an unknown one. It is more often than not used to describe a non-living object, and only sometimes a living non-human being with unknown gender. It is not supposed to be used for unknown gendered humans at all. Sometimes "their" and "them" are used, but of course both of those suggest a collective, not a singular.

I'm terrible at learning languages(breaking down sentences in school was always terribly difficult for me), but I do love finding oddities like that. I've been slowly trying to learn German and the differences are striking, and help to highlight failures in both languages.

It may not be ambiguous in a pragmatic sense, but it is grammatically ambiguous which is why the joke works. If a sign said "if your dog attacks a child, you must have it put down immediately" then the "it" there obviously refers to the dog, not the child. This is due to contextual understanding of the notion that putting something down is done to a dog and not a child, even though the "it" is grammatically ambiguous. If you interpret the notion of putting a dog in the bin as similarly natural or obvious behavior, the sign makes sense with the "it" referring to the dog. The joke plays on that grammatical ambiguity by questioning our assumptions about the language being used.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't sure I was correct, so I went and did some research and saw that "it" is a personal pronoun but was not on the list of the indefinite pronouns so I knew something in my understanding was flawed.

Before I could sort it out any further, I got interrupted from my reddit browsing by a pesky thing called "work" and only now have I been able to sign back on. Luckily for me, the good people of reddit have assisted me in my understanding far more efficiently than I likely could have done so myself.

For that, I thank you and I will let my erroneous attempt at humor stand so this part of the thread still makes sense. Perhaps others will benefit from the exchange and we all will have learned more about unclear antecedents.

My apologies also to Miss Johnson from 44 years ago, although, if you happen to be reading this, your blonde beauty had me more enthralled than did pronouns of any type.
