also, note that while they may look ugly and damaging for the environment these objects form artificial reefs and are great for fish habitat.

Anymore photos of this particular plane that's submerged? I have a giant interest in sunken ships and planes. It totally creeps me out though for some reason.

fish love aircraft fuel

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

This is the only problem.

There's actually a lake in Yosemite that had a plane crash in 1976... the fuel killed all the fish in the lake and it's since been sterile :-(

[–]BitchinTechnology 6 points7 points ago

i stand corrected, fish do NOT like aircraft fuel

Only as long as it's done with thorough preparation. You don't just pick up your refrigerator and throw it in to the ocean "because it will give little fishies a house to live in."

I'm talking about the basics such as cleaning every inch to take out anything that may be toxic to the area to studying the area whether marine life there will actually stick to it. Otherwise, you're doing more harm than good (actually, you'd be doing no good).

When I was younger I went lobster diving in the bahamas. Locals put random things like bathtubs and such in parts of the ocean that were only about 15-25 feet deep and after a few years they would fill with so much ocean life, specifically lobsters. Pretty crazy how it all works out.

That sounded like an awesome time. Yeah, I've been around some coastal communities and saw some successes. But also failures.

I'm sure all those downed fighter pilots thoroughly cleaned their planes before they died.

Excerpt from the photographer:

While island hopping around the Bahamas in a Cessna C172 aircraft, I made this aerial of a Curtiss C-46 that ditched on November 15, 1980. It crashed while it was on a drug smuggling mission for the Colombian Medellín drug cartel and lies in shallow water east of the Norman's Cay airport in the Exumas, Bahamas. My preflight Internet research paid off!

EDIT:

Also wallpaper

That's what they want you to think. It was the Bermuda Triangle.

[–]Owain1 6 points7 points ago

You mean that heavily trafficked section of the atlantic that has no greater ratio of losses to safe passages than anywhere else in the world?

[–]ConsumerOfFood 8 points9 points ago

That is precisely what I mean.

Good of you to attribute the photographer by name. Thanks! I get a tad sick of posts with no attribution or credit. Alright, the image may be public domain or CC-licensed but even so, including the name helps anyone who wants to see other shots by the same person :)

[–]Mapes[S] 1 point2 points ago

Definitely! I just put my feet into the photographer's shoes. I wouldn't want people re-hosting my pictures on imgur without giving me any credit!

Absolutely stunning picture!

[–]qemqemqem 1 point2 points ago

What colors the water around it?

[–]jake0818 0 points1 point ago

Later it was used in Thunderball.

Luke needs to lift that out of the water, or else he'll never get back to rescue his friends.
