Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Use bootcamp.

[–]ekfALLYALL 12 points13 points ago

boot camping games is always faster than running the mac version.

[–]sijura 2 points3 points ago

Yup! I noticed this too. I tried running StarCraft II on my 2010 MBP and it just works so much smoother in BootCamp than it does in OSX. The OSX experience at the same detail levels is jumpy and noticeably inferior.

[–]Kama_Blue 8 points9 points ago

Admit it, using bootcamp makes you a PC gamer, not a Mac Gamer.

[–]DaRabidMonkey 6 points7 points ago

No one who uses bootcamp claims to be a Mac Gamer. In fact, I don't think anybody claims to be a Mac Gamer.

[–]lingo654 -3 points-2 points ago

actually boot camp is not emulation. It's a partition using windows as the other operating system. i believe you could put any compatible OS there. The emulation software are things like parallels and vm ware. From what i hear (i'm a pc user) the results are pretty good. Thought you might want to know :)

[–]TheNovelNovelty 7 points8 points ago

I am willing to bet you meant to reply to another comment below this one.

[–]lingo654 0 points1 point ago

I most definitely did. Alas

[–]jimmez 0 points1 point ago

Why are people refering to "bootcamp" or "bootcamping." Once again something you can do on any computer turned into a "feature" for Mac systems. I despair. Pretty simple to do on most machines, you are just booting Windows from another partition... What's next, iPhones with brand new iText. Send text messages to your friends!

[–]B3NJ4M1N0 0 points1 point ago

You can't really do it on all computers, for example you need pretty specific components to run a Mac partition on a Windows PC, I know of a fair few people that have broken their PCs by trying to install OSX onto it. Not that you can't do it, it's just harder if you don't have the right bits :)

[–]jimmez 0 points1 point ago

I was talking Mac -> Windows, I know how much more fun PC->Mac is.

You can usually get away with emulating what Macs require though if someone has gone down the route of flashing their BIOS/UEFI that is certainly running a risk of bricking their device.

[–]PNR_Robots -2 points-1 points ago

Playing games on a computer makes you a PC gamer in general. I can never understand the whole PC vs Mac or those stupid console war thing.

I guess I just never care for those.

[–]Fallensegal 1 point2 points ago

It'll change your life.

[–]xaraan 0 points1 point ago

They are right. I finally bootcamped for skyrim and it was so awesome. Do it!

[–]DrSmoke 3 points4 points ago

Stop being a noob, and build a PC.

[–]xaraan 0 points1 point ago

Haven't had the money to put into that man. Life > noobism.

[–]Thjoth 1 point2 points ago

Sell the mac and buy a PC with the same or slightly better specs with the money?

[–]xaraan 0 points1 point ago

I still use my mac for a lot of work stuff (design and photography) it's not that important just for gaming. Get off the pc fanboy thing man, it's not that big a deal.

[–]Thjoth 1 point2 points ago

I wasn't being a PC fanboy, I was just suggesting a solution...

You said you didn't have the money for a PC, so I suggested a relatively simple way for you to get the money for a PC, and I get called a fanboy.

[–]xaraan 0 points1 point ago

I just don't understand the need for a PC when I've already found a solution. Sure one day if I had extra money to buy a machine for nothing but gaming I may get a PC, who wouldn't want to have all kinds of awesome computers and gadgets and have money not be an option. But for now my bootcamped mac works fine for the amount of gaming I do.

[–]zanep0 1 point2 points ago

I have an imac, whatever the large screen base model is

Except for all the fun, 3D-based applications. Which, lets be honest, is all I use Windows for. Great job breaking it, hero.

[–]ejdme 3 points4 points ago

Parallels and VMWare have hardware acceleration now, but it's still not as fast as just using Boot Camp.

[–]Sneaklemming -1 points0 points ago

I bought a macbook back in 08 and used OSX for 6 months before I figured out how to download the bootcamp beta (it wasn't a standard feature until leopard.) After that, I never used OSX again. There was no reason for me to use OSX over windows, unless I got a virus or messed something up. Then I'd boot into my emergency OS (OSX) and fix stuff or backup stuff on the windows partition. Then back to windows.

[–]777kid 14 points15 points ago

It's just as bad as losing your job right before the sale. And after working overtime to build an awesome gaming rig.

[–]crackerjack63 3 points4 points ago

I used bootcamp and loved it, Already filled my windows harddrive:(

[–]Lavaswimmer 3 points4 points ago

I buy them, then wait until I get a pc to install them.

[–]geardos 2 points3 points ago

I was much worse in the powerpc days.. Bootcamp makes this a null point now.

[–]picalo 2 points3 points ago

Stop buying overpriced computers that are extremely limited...oh yeah that's a console...stop buying overpriced consoles...sell your piece of shit and get a real PC. I can show you a few places where you can build a gaming rig and still have OSX if you really think that OS is worth your time still.

[–]GamerNSC 4 points5 points ago

Here you go. WINE for OS X.

It's still doesn't work as well as Windows, but at least some games run on it.

[–]Pandaclysm_ 11 points12 points ago

How long have we been aware that Mac doesn't have much gaming support? That being said; you knew what you were getting into when you chose a Mac.

Good day.

[–]gmoneygangster3 6 points7 points ago

as someone who used to only have a mac that feel

[–]MegaBUD 7 points8 points ago

Lol... brother bought a brand new macbook 2200$... i bought a cheap MSI 1200$... same hardware... first thing he did was installing windows7...

At the end of the day... we play the same games....

[–]Kama_Blue 7 points8 points ago

It's cheaper and easier to buy a decent PC and run the mac OS off it when you want it rather than buy an expensive macbook and run the PC OS off it.

[–]venice_black 1 point2 points ago

This.

[–]NiteShadeX2 0 points1 point ago

The fanboys are pissed. Quick I need to save face.

Hmm... Buy an Xbox.

[–]TheCheeks -1 points0 points ago

And he still has the option to switch back to OSX and use all the software on that side of the system. Plus Macbooks have superior physical build quality.

I love and use Windows, OSX, and Linux on a daily bases. If he bought the Macbook soley to game on then yes, bad choice, but if he needed OSX for any other application then it's a totally reasonable purchase. The new ones run everything at near max settings flawlessly.

[–]MegaBUD 0 points1 point ago

Come on... does it really worth an extra 1000$? why would you use macOS anyway? Safari? Itunes?... Sure the Macbook is suposed to be better built... but still... extra 1000$ for that apple logo?

Almost forgot +100$ for windows 7 :)

[–]TheCheeks -2 points-1 points ago

Just because you don't need OSX doesn't mean others don't need it. I need OSX for work, I need to be in OSX and I need to use the apps that run inside it, and not on Windows. Throw Bootcamp on the newest one and not only does it run OSX and it's apps, but it runs all games on High. It's able to do both. Not to mention the thing is solid as a rock thanks to the unibody construction.

The Apple hate needs to stop. As I said before, I use a variety of OSes and yet I still like using Apple laptops also.

[–]AllMightyWalrus[S] 4 points5 points ago

Thanks guys. What's your favorite game on Steam for Mac? Recently, I've been playing Psychonauts. Awesome game.

[–]Animystic 4 points5 points ago

I've bought Bastion, KOTOR and Left for Dead 2. Actually been playing all of them, too. That's enough games to last me until next year.

[–]Naternaut 2 points3 points ago

I just bought Civ 5, Binding of Isaac, and KOTOR.

I bought Civ 5 ~30 hours ago, have 8 hours already.

[–]dafones 2 points3 points ago

All the Valve games.

Personally, I just bought myself Amnesia. Waited for the summer sale, because I couldn't justify paying twenty bucks for 30 minutes of gameplay and pants that had been shit in.

[–]Augrills 4 points5 points ago

I've been playing Bastion and L4D2 non-stop.

[–]Bigmacpuffyg 4 points5 points ago

For me it's a tie between Civilization V and Team Fortress 2

[–]ivann196 2 points3 points ago

Left 4 dead 2, Amnesia and LIMBO

[–]Stumpledumpus 2 points3 points ago

Garry's Mod.

[–]SonicSlice 1 point2 points ago

Tf2 baby.

[–]EpicEmoKitteh 2 points3 points ago

TF2, Binding of Isaac, Killing Floor, Bastion, and Garry's Mod are all fantastic.

[–]EpicEmoKitteh 1 point2 points ago

There's actually a surprising amount of good games that run on Mac.

[–]Naternaut 0 points1 point ago

I agree. A lot of great games, just not BIG games, you know, the huge, blockbuster titles like CoD, Skyrim, ect.

[–]V2Blast 0 points1 point ago

Quite a few "blockbuster titles", too, just not many/all.

[–]DrSmoke -2 points-1 points ago

Making fun of losers that buy apple products. Sucker.

[–]OneFinalEffort 1 point2 points ago

I bought the GTA Trilogy on Steam a while back and it came with Mac Versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Would you like them?

[–]fistofadam 0 points1 point ago

I am a mac user, I will gladly take them! Worth a shot anyway..

[–]V2Blast 0 points1 point ago

If you bought them as a gift, wouldn't it appear as a single item in your inventory? And, assuming you didn't, wouldn't they all just go to your library?

...That said, I'd like Vice City/San Andreas if you do happen to have giftable versions.

[–]OneFinalEffort 0 points1 point ago

I bought the trilogy not realizing they came with Mac Versions (I would have waited until the Summer Sale to buy the complete pack had I known how cheap it would be) and I have a PC. I don't know if it is possible to gift them but if it is, I have no use for them. If you guys know how to make them giftable, we'll see about getting them out of my inventory!

[–]razski 1 point2 points ago

Ha!

[–]hvyboots 1 point2 points ago

Depending how souped up your Mac is, either BootCamp or Parallels will set you right.

Also, as a cheap solution for acquiring a copy of Windows to play games on, go download the latest Windows 8 Release Preview and install it for free. They'll give you a key that is supposed to be valid for the $40 upgrade in the fall when it goes GM.

[–]sickpharaoh 1 point2 points ago

Preferably BootCamp, Parallels doesn't give the greatest performance on newer games.

[–]Absolutedisgrace 1 point2 points ago

So i guess for you, what was on sale was Macs Payne?

I'll show myself out.

[–]crucialhunter 1 point2 points ago

there are no more pc only games, there are Windows only games, there is a big diference, since long ago, mac's are pc's too.

[–]V2Blast[M] 1 point2 points ago

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

[–]jerseydevil2oo3 1 point2 points ago

If you're a gamer and own a Mac

you're gonna have a bad time.

[–]FellTheCommonTroll 5 points6 points ago

And that's why you don't waste money on a mac...

[–]MatieuGuy 3 points4 points ago

Bootcamp, I don't get why Mac users insist on using Mac OS. I use bootcamp just fine, just make sure you use a 64bit Windows program, 32bit only recognizes 4gbs of ram. (On my Mac Pro anyways.) Use the Mac OS side for production work....or whatever you use it for. General rule, Mac for work and Windows for fun.

[–]DrSmoke 2 points3 points ago

Stop being a noob, and build a PC.

[–]xXblain_the_monoXx 3 points4 points ago

Here's a thought. Put windows on your mac. Dual boot, or even better, just get rid of osx.

[–]Warmachine- 1 point2 points ago

Sell the Mac, and then save up for a PC.

[–]sp104 19 points20 points ago

I doubt that you would need to save up after you sell the mac.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]sp104 9 points10 points ago

You have to be incompetent to get a virus- being an idiot and downloading some obvious bullshit. Movie.exe, huh? Yeah I'll run that.

[–]soapman4 4 points5 points ago

You have a mac and call yourself a gamer?

[–]SonicSlice 5 points6 points ago

You have a brain and yet you have that obnoxious prejudice? Come on man, get off the circle jerk train.

[–]Kama_Blue 5 points6 points ago

Windows users don't laugh at mac users claiming they're gamers for no good reason.

They laugh because microsoft has spent Billions making DirectX and thousands of other gaming innovations to streamline and simplify the game development process, and there's nothing comparable for the Mac OS, and probably will never be because of the OS emphasis.

They laugh because in every single instance you're ever gaming on a mac, someone mentions they're an avid Mac user and they game on a macbook, but they're really just using bootcamp.

If you use bootcamp you're a PC gamer, get over yourselves.

[–]fr00bl3t 3 points4 points ago

A PC gamer that loves to overspend on hardware.

[–]grossly-incandescent -3 points-2 points ago

I was unaware there were other kinds of PC gamers.

[–]wtfisthat 1 point2 points ago

What he meant was, spend 2x as much for the same hardware.

[–]grossly-incandescent -1 points0 points ago

I don't just buy hardware when I get a computer, I buy a computer.

[–]wtfisthat 2 points3 points ago

What, exactly, are you trying to imply?

[–]grossly-incandescent -1 points0 points ago

That the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

You're not gonna get it anyway if specs are your chief concern.

[–]wtfisthat 1 point2 points ago

You're not gonna get it anyway if specs are your chief concern.

Really? How not?

[–]Jet_Age_of_Tomorrow -3 points-2 points ago

omgz ur prejuidiced against pc gamerz sthap

[–]DrSmoke -2 points-1 points ago

Hes right. Mac users are a fucking joke.

[–]Appleanche -1 points0 points ago

He said it in maybe a more blunt way, but it's still true.

I'm typing this on an iMac.. it's almost 5 years old. 5 years ago I didn't really care much about PC gaming and was more into consoles, now I'm sort of shifting back.

Most 5 year old PCs I'd be able to upgrade a PCIe card, even something dirt cheap would be lightyears ahead of what I have in this iMac (x1600, 128MB). That would give me a much larger library of things to play.

You might be able to play a lot of the games out today on medium on the lasest iMac but in 2-3 years it's not gonna cut it and you're stuck with it.

[–]Jet_Age_of_Tomorrow -3 points-2 points ago

Prejudice? It's a fucking facetious comment.

[–]coloure 1 point2 points ago

I also feel this way as I am a Mac-user as well. But then I remember that I have Windows 7 installed via bootcamp.

[–]fr00bl3t 1 point2 points ago

I heard Facebook has a nice selection of free games. Why not look over there.

I mean your machine is designed for Facebook.

[–]Norsak 1 point2 points ago

If you're going to join the mac hatred circlejerk, here's a pointer. Hate on the people who use their laptops solely for facebook, not people who buy the laptop and occasionally use facebook.

[–]sickpharaoh 1 point2 points ago

I'll use facebook all I want, fool

[–]fr00bl3t -2 points-1 points ago

It's a simple jab at Apple and their incompatibility with other products.

I could take a jab at the price for the type of hardware or even their stupid ads. Would you like me to do that?

[–]Norsak 1 point2 points ago

I know.

[–]fr00bl3t 0 points1 point ago

No you don't.

[–]Captain_Box -5 points-4 points ago

Seriously? Why do so many PC users hate on Macs! Hate on consoles, Macs are closer to PCs, than consoles!

[–]Kama_Blue 0 points1 point ago

A... actually...

Macbooks are difficult to upgrade, have absurd content distribution services that can't be replaced, can only be serviced at the factory, are overpriced for the hardware you're getting with them, die out every couple of years and need replacement....

[–]DrSmoke -1 points0 points ago

Nope. Consoles and macs both make you a loser. A casual, noob, loser.

[–]Captain_Box -1 points0 points ago

Obviously a fanboy who doesn't like other peoples having their own preferences.

[–]thefck 2 points3 points ago

that kama_blue guy, you got nothing better to do that being a unreasonable fanboy?

[–]Lato87 0 points1 point ago

Check out parallels or bootcamp. I, until recently, was in your position.

I'm using parallels 7, it's working okay, a little lag at times. But I can play my Borderlands just fine.

Anyone know if bootcamp is worth the boot up, over the ease of parallels?

[–]Sephus 1 point2 points ago

It's well worth it, you don't have to account for the overhead of running two OSs so you can utilize the full amount of ram and processing power to run your games.

[–]Kamishini-No-Yari 0 points1 point ago

This is me when I realize I'm poor during the sale.

[–]upq700hp 0 points1 point ago

Then buy a PC.

[–]Derpface123 0 points1 point ago

every time I see a game on Steam

FTFY

[–]Avatar1909 0 points1 point ago

Quit bitching and sell your hipster soul container.

[–]MagnusTheGreat 0 points1 point ago

Bwahahahahahahahaha!!! Sorry, but this is incredibly funny. Aren't you to hip to play mainstream games anyway? Or to browse Steam?

[–]PoisonousGirl 0 points1 point ago

It's been hard for you!?

I HAVE A COMPUTER THAT'S NEARLY A DECADE OLD! (I think it's 7 years or so old) -_- I can barely play anything on it! v_v

I can't afford to have my husband build me a new one...

[–]tyrant8100 -4 points-3 points ago

Why get a Mac in the first place?

[–]bawlzsauce 0 points1 point ago

Right there with ya, my man.

[–]itshouldjustglide 0 points1 point ago

I have no sympathy.

[–]ifonlyiweresexy 0 points1 point ago

Just quit being a fag and get a PC.

[–]OKAH 0 points1 point ago

Why do people still buy Macs? is it just about the looks?

I can't understand spending double to have something weaker than the PC equivalent, and people still use the "oh but its good for editing/movies" does the mac really have software thats so much better than the software you get on pc?

Not trolling, I just don't understand a mac customers mindset.

To me its like being given the option to a have a customizable/upgradable vehicle thats really powerful and can do everything or be upgraded when its obsolete, Or a vehicle that looks nicer, doesn't do half of what the previous model can do, but you have to pay triple, and can't upgrade it.

[–]sickpharaoh 2 points3 points ago

Why do people still buy Macs? is it just about the looks?

To make the games you play, for one

does the mac really have software thats so much better than the software you get on pc?

Yes, and in some cases, the same piece of software will run better on one or the other. Most games run better on Windows. Any kind of workstation intensive stuff tends to run better on Mac.

Not trolling, I just don't understand a mac customers mindset.

To be honest there are a lot of jagoffs who buy Macs literally for the image, they want to be seen with that Apple logo or they've been conned into believing it's simply a superior product. If you only want to browse the internet and make spreadsheets and text documents you have absolutely no reason to own a Mac other than possibly needing an idiot proof computer. Macs are very popular with baby boomers who are Windows and Linux retarded.

[–]OKAH 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the resposne but... To make the games you play, for one

Just no.

I would wager large, LARGE amounts of cash that isn't true - I have been a couple of game development studios and watched enough developer videos etc... to know that just isn't true AT ALL.

There might be a few macs around to test on or do graphic work/or maybe you meant indie devs but you seem to be claiming macs have the majority share in games development.... just NO.

[–]DrSmoke -4 points-3 points ago

No one uses Macs to make games you moron.

[–]Bramzigramz 0 points1 point ago

As a college student, I am continually mystified at people (especially engineers) with MacBooks. Honestly, it seems like many are simply wealthy preppy college kids.

There are some advantages to Macs though: desktops are just as powerful as PCs and can run Windows (while PCs can't run OSx).

As far as laptops go, Macs excel in portability and battery life. Screen resolution is ungodly high (so high that it's pratically worthless, lol). Also, they are less prone to viruses and require less maintenance as time goes on.

Some people like them because the interface is "simple." (I encase that in quotes because I think the UI is fucking horrible. Source: having a Mac desktop). But it works for some.

If I had lots of money, was raised on the Mac interface, and wanted a laptop just for web browsing and simple applications (shudder)--I'd get a MacBook.

[–]mordacthedenier 0 points1 point ago

Your analogy is horrific and makes me want to cry.

[–]OKAH -1 points0 points ago

what's not true about it?

[–]mordacthedenier 0 points1 point ago

To me its like being given the option to a have a customizable/upgradable vehicle thats really powerful and can do everything or be upgraded when its obsolete

Depends on how much you spend and if it's not a laptop.

Or a vehicle that looks nicer

True

doesn't do half of what the previous model can do

Wut

but you have to pay triple

Double wut

and can't upgrade it.

What if I told you upgradeability isn't the end all be all to 99% of people. It's also the same for all laptops.

[–]Appleanche 0 points1 point ago

First point I'd like to make is that the iMac is an All in One.. it's a bit unfair to compare a custom built computer geared to gaming to an All in One built to general use computing. Compare the iMac to a lot of PC All in Ones and it's fairly competitive.

That being said, you sort of have to make the comparison because Apple doesn't offer a midranged tower. You've got the mini, iMac, and Mac Pro. The Mini's entire gimmick is that it's tiny, which forces big sacrifices and ends up having a horrid power to price ratio. The iMac is an all in one so it features the same sacrifices, then you have a workstation which doesn't fit the bill.

[–]DrSmoke -1 points0 points ago

Because most people are stupid.

[–]mswarnock -2 points-1 points ago

I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR YOU. I AM A MAC USER, WE HAVE THE OPTION OF PARALLELS, VMWARE, CROSSOVER, AND/OR BOOTCAMP. GROW THE FUCK UP AND PIRATE THEM.

[–]Elgindabomb -1 points0 points ago

Im here with you.

[–]cameron157 -1 points0 points ago

I know that feel bro, it's hard.

[–]Spatulamarama -3 points-2 points ago

I am pleasantly surprised by the lack of mac hate circlejerkery in this thread.

[–]V2Blast 0 points1 point ago

It's mostly just Kama_Blue and DrSmoke (and at least Kama_Blue puts in a little bit of effort).

God the Steam sale is such worthless crap.

It's impossible to browse it properly, I never used Steam much, is it always this impossible to find stuff? Like, is there a way to browse a list of the games in Steam? Or am I confined to the kind of main page where they lista couple of games and don't show the platforms until I click the game and read its own page?

The Mac section has a list of ten games on sale, not really useful.

[–]sickpharaoh 2 points3 points ago

Go to the store page in a web browser

[–]grossly-incandescent -2 points-1 points ago

Now what?

Is there something like http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue anywhere?
