Original sin didn't come about until they ate from the tree of knowledge, so to be fair God didn't create them that way.
[–]bogan 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago*
You are correct about the Bible not stating they were created with "original sin", but if Adam and Eve didn't know the difference between right and wrong before they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil why were they so severely punished for eating of its fruit?
If you told your two-year old not to eat a cookie on the counter and the two-year old ate it anyway, would you cast the child out of the house and into the street?
And why did Yahweh place the "the one forbidden thing" in the garden, anyway?
The American mythologist, Joseph Campbell, has written about the occurence of "the one forbidden thing" in mythology.
Joseph Campbell notes that the Eden narrative's forbidden tree is an example of a motif "very popular in fairy tales, known to folklore students as the One Forbidden Thing". For another example of the One Forbidden Thing, see the Serbian fairy tale Bash Chelik, in which the hero is forbidden to open a certain door but he does anyway, thereby releasing the villain. Also see the classic story of Pandora's box, which existed in ancient Greek mythology.
There's an interview by Bill Moyers of the American mythologist Joseph Campbell in The Power of Myth in which Campbell discusses "the one forbidden thing."
MOYERS: What does it say about what all of us have in common that so many of these stories contain similar elements - the forbidden fruit, the woman? For example, these myths, these creation stories, contain a "thou shalt not." Man and woman rebel against that prohibition and move out on their own. After years and years of reading these things, I am still overwhelmed at the similarities in cultures that are far, far apart. CAMPBELL: There is a standard folk tale motif called The One Forbidden Thing. Remember Bluebeard, who says to his wife "Don't open the closet"? And then one always disobeys. In the Old Testament story God points out the one forbidden thing. Now, God must have known very well that man was going to eat the forbidden fruit. But it was by doing that that man became the initiator of his own life. Life really began with that disobedience. MOYERS: How do you explain these similarities? CAMPBELL: There are two explanations. One explation is that the human psyche is essentially the same all over the world. The psyche is the inward experience of the human body, which is essentially the same in all human beings, with the same organs, the same instincts, the same impulses, the same conflicts, the same fears. Out of this common ground have come what Jung has called the archetypes, which are the common ideas of myths.

And Yahweh created the talking snake, but had no idea the talking snake would induce Eve to eat the fruit of the one forbidden thing? The talking snake in the mythology of Genesis was likely an element of the story derived from earlier Sumerian mythology.
Joseph Campbell believed that the serpent in the Eden story was lifted directly from either the Sumerian God Enki, God of Water and Wisdom, or his son Ningizzida. Both of them were identified as Serpent Gods, among other things. Enki was possessed of the food and water of life as well as the tablets of wisdom. Ningizzida was Lord of the Tree of Truth.
Reference: Asherah, Part II: The serpent’s bride.
Making the serpent a villain in the Jewish myth may simply have been a case of "the gods of the old religion become the devils of the new" as Margaret Murray, a British Egyptologist and anthropologist, is credited with saying.
[–]skuppy 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
You're preaching to the choir here. I'm not an apologist, I'm just saying if you're going to post snarky image macros you might want to have your facts right.
Also there were two forbidden things in the garden of Eden. God cast Adam and Eve out before they could also eat from the tree of eternal life.
[–]bogan 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
It's true there were two cosmic trees that Yahweh was concerned the humans he created might eat from.
Genesis 3:22:
And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever."
But in Genesis 2:16-17 he only forbids them to eat from one of those trees.
And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
[–]offthetop 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
He created all the children of Adam and Eve with original sin.
I think Christians view the issue differently from this. Original Sin is a consequence of eating the fruit of knowledge. It's not a curse put upon people by God. He said "don't eat this, it will make you sick" and they ate it anyway.
[–]Uuna 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
Which also contradicts with:
"Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin." --Deuteronomy 24:16
(to grab a quick example)
[–]skuppy 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
There's no contradiction here, at least not in your example. Personally I hate arguing semantics but in regards to "original sin" we're talking about the absence of holiness. This isn't the same sin as masturbation or murder. And it doesn't have anything to do with putting people to death.
[–]Uuna 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
A son is not ment to be responsible for the sins of their father... to put it more generally each person is responsible for their own sins, not those of their relatives.
This absolutely contradicts with "original sin" extending to all.
I don't see how it is a different "kind of sin", but even if we agree that it is and is merely a "lack of holiness" then this is contradictory to the idea of "the holy spirit" and the trinity.
[–]AtomicToaster17 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
Yes, but why did God put the fruit there in the first place?
[–]offthetop 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
I don't think I understand you. I was a Christian and still have to go to a Christian school, so I understand that it is viewed as a consequence. I was taught that we are all born with original sin because of something that our ancestors failed to do. I wasn't trying to make it sound like a curse, it does that by itself. I don't recall him saying that it will "make you sick," but just not to do it because he said so. And now we all seem to be serving this consequence that we had nothing to do with, but our ancestors did. Once again can be called a curse just by description, not by me meaning to. Fuck defending this, I'm done listening to people of 'authority' telling me that babies are born filthy sinners.
Try and think of it like a hereditary disease or genetic disorder. You inherit the disease as a consequence of your parent's genetics. Which is very different than your mother/father punishing you for being born.
[–]offthetop 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Ok, I don't think you understand. I understand original sin perfectly, as I was a christian. I'm going to assume that you are because you are defending something that makes little sense and throwing out all of my argument to persuade me of something that makes little sense. So by all means, tell all of your christian friends that I am a stupid atheist who doesn't even get original sin and thinks it's a curse all over /r/Christianity, but stop trying to explain your stupidity on r/atheism. We get it and that's why we don't believe it.
What the? You just flipped back and forth there. First you call it a curse and now you say it's not a curse? I'm sorry you're stuck in a Christian school cause it's clearly given you some kind of complex.
The only thing I'm defending is the fact that many atheists have this caricature in their heads of "things that Christians believe" and it turns out that most Christians believe something else entirely. All that does is make atheists look like stupid assholes with a chip on their shoulder.
[–]gabe20l2 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
That's like giving a kid a ball and a gun. They will play with the ball for a while but eventually will get bored and start messing with a gun. It is "his" fault because he placed them in that position in the first place.
[–]JethroKress 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
No, its like giving a kid a ball to play with and having a gun mounted on the wall, and God said "don't touch that gun". And then the kid touched the gun. It the kids own fault for touching the gun because God said not to touch it and he did anyway
[–]super_he_man 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago
You forgot the part about where a talking snake convinces the kid to touch the gun.
[–]T1meTr4veller 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago
Well, he said it was a talking snake... turns out my creepy uncle is a pervert AND a ventriloquist!
And you forgot the part where Satan used the snake as a body to convince him
[–]p4nthers11 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago
If you believe in an omnipotent God with a divine plan who knows everything before it happens then the very idea that Adam and Eve ever had free will to not commit original sin kind of breaks down, dont you think? It makes no sense. All the characters in the Bible are slaves to this pre-determined narrative where nothing they do matters and the points don't mean anything.
[–]-Hastis- 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Christians often point out that adam and eve needed to eat from the fruit, so that we don't be worshipping robots and have free-will to choose him... Wait, does that mean adam and eve didn't have free-will?
[–]Captain_Eaglefort 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Except that gun contains the knowledge for understanding WHY they should listen. Before eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they by definition had no concept of "right" and "wrong". That is shown by the shame they suddenly felt from being naked. So really, your amended analogy isn't much better.
Yet that is what has lead me to believe in what I believe. Faith. Its something everyone has, just in different ways.
[–]gabe20l2 -2 points-1 points0 points 1 month ago
Or you know "god" in his infinite wisdom could have chosen NOT to have put a fuckin gun where the children were and avoided this whole mess. But keep on defending negligent non-existent metaphorical beings. U REEL SMRAT BRO.
The reason God placed a metaphorical "gun" on the wall was to give Adam and Eve the choice. He wanted to let them decide whether they don't eat from the tree or they do. Would you baby your kids so that they know no wrong in the world? Or would you teach them how one thing is right and one is wrong? And if they choose the wrong then they are to be punished, just as God said. And if we are going to have a conversation on this topic cut the whole "U REEL SMRAT BRO" I could care less that you mock my religion. But its really childish
[–]gabe20l2 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
I mock it because it's stupid not because it's "yours". Let's see how CPS feels when you give your kids a choice of a ball and a gun, placing them in plain view of your children. They'd drag you off to jail and kids would go to another family. If Adam and Eve were like children, how in the fuck is it good to give them a choice of things they don't know about. Yeah God may be loving but he's also a dumb as bricks troll if he puts chocolate milk near your mouth and tells you not to drink. #YOLO
You know that I mean that in a literal sense. I am talking about things like your kid taking something without asking for permission. And they did know about it. They were told "do not eat from the tree, for you shall surely die" . And the reason he did that was he could test their faith in him. (and whats with the YOLO thing?)
Ok let me tell someone who has never died or experienced dying, that I'm going to kill them after they disobey me. Yeah that'll show those inexperienced naive assholes to obey me all the time. Assholes.
God didn't kill Adam and Eve. Where are you getting your information?
That has got to be the worst analogy for this situation. It is nothing like that.
It's more like keeping drugs in the house and saying "don't touch this kids, this is for daddy only."
Yeah except he placed the drugs in their room on top of their desk next to the ball. Are you playing or are you actually stupid? Halp me owt hear.

Image yourself in Adam's place. Endless boredom naming all the animals that God saw fit to create. After the zillionth animal I would have eaten the damned apple just to end the stupid game makework.
Genesis 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
Nah bro. You image YOURSELF ya fuckin fagit.

[–]Leonoto 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
True, but the omniscient God created them knowing they would sin.
[–]bobbijane 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
Does anyone ever thinks of these stories as metaphors?
[–]capn_awesome 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
Sure, many do as a step somewhere before atheism.
[–]bogan 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago*
The great thing about considering them as metaphors is that the interpretation is only limited by one's imagination, which is why you can find so many interpretations for the Garden of Eden story when it is viewed as a metaphor. E.g., depending on one's preference, it can be one of the following or any of many others:
A metaphor for human sexuality
A metaphor for man's move from a nomadic life to an agricultural life.
The Bible links Jesus' genealogy back to Adam and Eve, but I suppose one could also consider Jesus to be a metaphor or at least much of the mythology regarding him could be viewed metaphorically. E.g., some do consider the resurrection story to be a metaphor.
Or we could just view such stories as most Christians view the myths of other cultures from which Jewish and Christian mythology has borrowed elements for their own stories. Much of Genesis is a retelling of older Sumerian mythology.
[–]bobbijane 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
i thought it more as saying to avoid "the apple" was saying avoiding things that cause you psychical or moral arm, and by eating it your tainting your health or in the story causing yourself to basically be damned, i did not think it could be expanded to much more in one imagination. i think the whole book is just stories on morals like aesop's fables, so i find kinda stupid when people take to seriously like shaping their life around it and making things like this post poking fun at it.

[–]Jaxie911 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
This is funny, but the only objection I have to this is that most Christians do not believe Adam and Eve were created with original sin. They believe they were created as perfectly pure, sinless beings and then later tempted into sin. Though even with that correction their logic still does not make sense.
[–]montyjack 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
Atheist here. Pedantic atheist, actually. Just wanted to say that man was not created with original sin, man was created with free will and chose to sin.
Now, why knowledge of good and evil is sinful, why the rest of us should be punished for something a distant ancestor did, or frankly how free will can exist in the context of omniscience are good questions I've never heard satisfactory answers to.

Wait, is that how it goes in other Bibles? I was unfortunately raised as Jehovah's Witness, they believe Jehovah created everything, including jesus as his 1st angel and satan as his 2nd. But then for some reason they believe jesus ascended to the throne in 1914 or some weird year. For all this time I didnt realize that most christians believed that Jesus was the creator as well.
Most Christians believe in the trinity. God being three in one. The father, son, and holy spirit. So yeah, they believe Jesus is also God.
wow... seriously the more you know about it the stupider these people seem
Yeah. My friend is a Jehovah Witness and was telling me all about it, I don't believe in any of it but it actually makes wayyyy more sense than regular Christianity. Regular Christianity takes so many things out of context. It ends up making less sense than it did to begin with.
