They weren't forcing him to engage in a "Sexual act", so no, I don't think that's rape.

We live in a greyscale world, so I guess you could stretch the definition of "Sexual act" to include getting hit in the balls with a shovel, but really? If someone hit you in balls would you really say "Omg I just had sex!"?

I'm not saying that I think this is ok, but saying that this is rape just seems... wrong.

It's not rape it is sexual assault. It's an assault and it's the assaulted part is sexual.

I know that law courts don't use dictionary definitions, yet the legal definition and dictionary definitions usually aren't that different.

The law is slightly different depending on where you live but here is a definition of sexual assault in the legal sense: http://www.duhaime.org/LegalDictionary/S/SexualAssault.aspx

I won't quote the entire thing but there is more to sexual assault than the part of the body in question. I would argue that the circumstances surrounding this "assault" aren't sexual. They didn't hit him in the balls because it was sexual, they hit him in the balls because it hurts. If guys had a similar "weak spot" that wasn't sexual and hurt more, they would have hit him there.

That's still a dictionary. The law will define what it means in the text of the law itself, in a section with definitions of other terms typically. Here's an example from the federal law codes:

Not if there was so sexual intent behind the action. They are doing it in a misguided attempt to be funny. Not to arouse anyone. And it is without a doubt not rape. Are you going to say that someone hitting your mouth is sexual assault? Because I believe there are those who use their mouths in a sexual manner. It's this kind of flawed-logic that makes peeing in public into a sex-crime. And it's dumb.

When some frat-bro kicks another dude in the crotch, there is nothing sexual about it. He just thinks it's going to hurt a lot and thinks that will be funny. It's not a proper thing to do. It's not nice. But it's not a sex-crime.

Now if that same dude walked up and grabbed that same dudes crotch and said "Yeah, you like that?" That would be sexual assault.
