Just left my job to go back to school and pursue a career in news production. It's my second day of unemployment and I totally needed this. Thanks, Daria!

Well waking up at 40 with the bitter realization you're in a job you hate because you didn't decide on a career in your teens is an option.

[–]dnmty 5 points6 points ago

In my teens, I had a crush on Daria.

[–]Pretiacruento 0 points1 point ago

Who didn't?

[–]DonFix 0 points1 point ago

yo.

[–]ominoustoad 12 points13 points ago

As cliché as it sounds, I don't understand why more people don't pursue their hobby as their career. I was pretty much decided at 15 that I would be involved with computers and the internet in a major way(I'm 25 now). I loved 'building' digital things, either with code(JS and PHP at the time) or pixels (photoshop, flash, after effects...). I design interfaces now, and i still enjoy working everyday.

TL;DR: If you have a hobby, try turning that into your career. It's cliché, but if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.

Because your hobby is relevant in a big way to the current job market. Designing hats for pet poodles is not. That's why most people are unable to pursue their hobbies as career.

[–]shiftius 4 points5 points ago

Well shit, there goes the plan for my Poodle Party Hat Emporium.

[–]goofandaspoof 1 point2 points ago

I'm sure you could find a job at Valve.

[–]notquitemalcomtucker 20 points21 points ago

I really glad for you but it's not that simple for a lot of us. I play guitar, do a bit of karate and love reading but none of these could I pursue to a professional level. I'm just not passionate about anything and as a result I know I'm going to end up a 9 to 5 cubicle monkey

[–]ominoustoad 1 point2 points ago

Don't concede to being a cubicle monkey just yet! Your passions can totally be done professionally. Granted, you probably won't be rolling in the benjamin's from any single hobby, but combined you can have yourself a nice living. Teaching guitar lessons, and part-time karate instructor are things you can do while pursuing an english degree, for example. I have a few friends that decided to study mech-engineering because it was a safe bet, rather than something they actually enjoyed, and they are already regretting it. On the other hand, I have a buddy who manages a marina in the summer, walks dogs year-round, and is an assistant brew-master at a pub here in Chicago. Probably the happiest guy i know.

[–]n8wolf 1 point2 points ago

I agree with you and I'm sorry you're getting downvoted. It's a matter of finding what it is about those things that you like and seeing what marketable skills there are in your hobbies. If you like guitar and karate, I'm assuming you can look into the technical aspects of things and apply order to a project (inherent qualities in people who choose those hobbies).

[–]hunterv01 0 points1 point ago

I don't get why you're being downvoted

[–]Rednoxy 5 points6 points ago

Because the cold world has yet to crush his soul. You can just feel the hope on his words. Sickening.

Or, that's the secret to happiness in a middle income world. Find a way to love your job and/or get a job where you love what you do. If anything you at least have a comfortable job that can actually make some changes in people's lives, and that's a cool thing. I have a lot of respect for therapists and I can imagine the difficulty. As a person with a lot of friends in therapy right now, I can say I really appreciate everything you do for others.

[–]Jollycocks 2 points3 points ago

It's nearly impossible to make any money tricking :(

[–]sgtpppr 1 point2 points ago

I prefer to keep my hobbies fun. Once play becomes work, there is no play left. It's similar to "you shouldn't work with your wife". Computers are so broad that you can't just claim that as a hobby anyways. It also doesn't hurt that your hobby happens to be something that is in high demand these days. I doubt you'd have an easy time finding a job if your hobby was mud and cheese sculptures.

[–]beauterham 1 point2 points ago

My hobby is basketball, I'm an inch short of 6 feet and I am white.

[–]svengalus[!] 5 points6 points ago

You sound like you would make a perfect PE teacher. Off you go!

[–]Ace-O-Matic 1 point2 points ago

Because you get treated better at McDonalds than at most AAA game studios?

[–]A_DERPING_ULTRALISK 1 point2 points ago

Your "hobby" coincidentally has tons of job opportunities directly related to your field. What about other people without hobbys that can be directly applied to a job field?

[–]Cornered_Animal 6 points7 points ago

Diarrhea cha cha cha!

[–]milleribsen 5 points6 points ago

excuse me.

Excuse me.

[–]fragmasster 4 points5 points ago

My goal is to have money in my bank account when I'm 40. -_-

[–]cmdood 1 point2 points ago

Weird, i was watching that episode earlier. I like that quote though and have made that my goal as well

[–]Biuku 1 point2 points ago

You can waste a lot of time trying to avoid that as well.

Nothing wrong with being successful at something substantial, even if it's not ideal.

[–]IamnotHorace 1 point2 points ago

Too Late :-(

[–]narinciye 0 points1 point ago

I suppose I am the only one expecting a soccer video

[–]Keyboardsamurai 0 points1 point ago

Since I was little I always wanted to be a police officer. I'm 25 years old and I graduate the police academy in 2 weeks. 40 year old me better not feel this way.

[–]Rc591323 1 point2 points ago

[–]myPuppysCute 0 points1 point ago

[–]prolike 0 points1 point ago

Shameless plug for /r/daria ?

[–]JesterAzazel -2 points-1 points ago

That was always my fear, which is why I went strait to work after high school.

[–]yippee_that_burns -4 points-3 points ago

*Straight

Maybe you should have stayed in high school...

[–]JesterAzazel 9 points10 points ago

Public education at work.

Seriously though, I typed the wrong word, big deal. No need to be rude about it.
