Sometimes (in non-Toronto/Canada) subreddits, people in geographically hotter places (let's say, for example, Texas) will tell people more North of them what "real" heat is like in the summer. Likewise, places more north than us will say what "real" cold is like in the winter.

But around where we are, we get both hot and cold. The difference in temperature between the coldest of winter and the hottest of summer is some 60 degrees centigrade. Places that are always warmer or always cooler don't have to adapt back and forth like we do. We here in Toronto, Southern Ontario, and the US belt around us - we're suvivors of weather fluctuations is what we are :S

Edit: Oh, let me try to be helpful to you, OP. Get a fan, get one of those spray bottles from the dollar store or something, and make some ice cubes to put in it. Bonus points if you rig something to automatically spray the mist from time to time.

[–]Ginnigan 3 points4 points ago

Yes, get a fan! I don't have A/C at home, but I have an osculating oscillating fan and I basically move it around where ever I am. I actually don't even have it set to osculate oscillate, just blow air directly at me at all times. Even when I'm sleeping I have it aimed at me and, if it's a particularly warm night, don't use blankets.

Then if it's a cooler day I sit it at the edge of the window blowing in to get fresh air in my place.

The spray bottle sounds like a great idea, too! I've never even thought of it.

I'm from Thunder Bay, which is never nearly as humid as Toronto, and I've only been down here for the past two (super hot) summers. That fan has been a blessing.

[–]4ray 11 points12 points ago

If you are Korean, fans can kill you.

[–]HollowSix 6 points7 points ago

[–]sleepingdragon 8 points9 points ago

I have to google "osculate" just to see what it means. Now I like the term "osculating fan", or the kissing fan.

The word is "oscillating", just an FYI.

[–]Ginnigan 1 point2 points ago

Haha! Aww. Well maybe I bought a kissing fan! (I didn't.)

Honestly what happened was I spelled it wrong, and spellcheck suggested "osculate" so I went with it. Computers are destroying my brain.

[–]Ehau -1 points0 points ago

You should read on "Fan-Death"

[–]Nadon 26 points27 points ago

I came to Canada thinking it was COLD...

This is not what i signed up for.

[–]Imagicka 33 points34 points ago

You looked at a weather map and saw:

Buffalo: 79, Rochester: 80, Albany: 78

Hamilton: 22, Toronto: 25

...and thought: hey, that's not bad! Didn't you?

[–]baudehlo 5 points6 points ago

Jeez I wish it was 25. I take my motorbike to work and it sits at a lovely 103 degrees (yes, Celsius). Tomorrow is not going to be fun.

[–]MetalFlameV 3 points4 points ago

Doesn't water boil at 100 degrees celsius? Is it possible to be that hot?

[–]baudehlo 7 points8 points ago

Yes. Bikes aren't made of water.

[–]HollowSix 2 points3 points ago

Maybe you were confused by the phrasing. He meant the bike's engine temp was hot enough to boil water, which is actually true for most bikes. Straddling that while wearing an armoured jacket and if you are in traffic you'll be sitting/standing in the sun for a while. I love motorcycles (mine included) but they are tough for commuting.

[–]MetalFlameV 2 points3 points ago

Thanks, I thought that he meant that it was that hot outside! That would suck.

[–]GillaMobster 1 point2 points ago

What?

[–]baudehlo 5 points6 points ago

I said: "TOMORROW IS NOT GOING TO BE FUN". Sorry.

[–]GillaMobster 2 points3 points ago

It gets to 103 degrees Celsius? That seems high, but I don't know enough about motorcycles or the sun to argue.

[–]baudehlo 5 points6 points ago

Most bikes (and cars) cooling systems kick in at 100C. But you don't straddle a car's engine.

[–]SunTzuOfFucking 1 point2 points ago

They're made of metal. Shit gets warm.

[–]RussellOliver 8 points9 points ago

Did someone say GOLD?

oh...ya, cold.

[–]poktanju 5 points6 points ago

I saw you at Fallsview Casino once.

You didn't seem very nice.

[–]RussellOliver 2 points3 points ago

Sorry. Was losing my CASH all night at the casino.

I love to trade my CASH for old broken gold, not to the house for nothing.

[–]Nadon 0 points1 point ago

I BUY YO YOS'D JEW-ELRY

[–]RussellOliver 1 point2 points ago

Very Nice. But you have much to learn, young Padawan.

[–]DanWallace 47 points48 points ago

I don't even have blinds in my apartment, let alone an air conditioner. Suck my sweaty dick.

[–]NeverEnoughCharacter[S] 29 points30 points ago

I don't have blinds in my apartment either, so I suppose our sweaty dicks cancel each other out.

[–]jsstaedtler 22 points23 points ago

69ing in this weather has got to be uncomfortable.

[–]DanWallace 12 points13 points ago

I call top.

[–]burgess_meredith_jr 13 points14 points ago

I call middle.

Also, toss some tinfoil up on those bitches till it cools down. Makes it dark and reflects the light. Looks like shit, but fuck it.

[–]Atsir 12 points13 points ago

Looks like shit a grow op, but fuck it.

[–]hallucinathan 11 points12 points ago

I had blinds. THEY LITERALLY MELTED.

[–]pro_tool 2 points3 points ago

So did mine. I live in a sweatbox bachelor and have only a small fan that makes screeching noises because it hates me- so I leave it off during the day (when I'm at work). A couple days ago my blinds just fell off. I thought they ware just broken because they suck, but upon further investigation I found that they FUCKING MELTED.

[–]brlito 2 points3 points ago

Since the summer started I've more or less moved into the basement game den, the large TVs are here and I've even moved my computer here too. Going back upstairs is like walking into a dry-heat sauna.

[–]NEeZ44 8 points9 points ago

I fix ACs. what part of the city you live in?

[–]54321jj 19 points20 points ago

Why didn't you just sell your gun so you could fix your AC?

[–]Imagicka 12 points13 points ago

He's in Toronto, he doesn't have a real gun.

[–]myusernameonreddit 6 points7 points ago

$20 in parts from Canadian Tire/Home Depot. It's not the same thing, but for twenty bucks and a ten minute project, it might help you sleep a bit.

[–]mersault 4 points5 points ago

That won't be nearly as effective here in Toronto because it's too humid. What the guy linked to built, whether he realizes it or not, is a swamp cooler. This depends on the dryness of the air to evaporate some of the liquid in the cooler, which has the effect of drawing heat out of the air. There would be some cooling action from running the air over the cold water/ice, but a significant amount of the cooling action the guy linked to received would be lost in our humid environment.

[–]iLikeToBiteMyNails 1 point2 points ago

Oh god, now I'm thinking about how humid it is in my non air conditioned room and I want to die.

[–]DiscoRage 0 points1 point ago

[–]burgess_meredith_jr 1 point2 points ago

Canadian Tire regularly sells new window air conditioners for $80. Seems like it would be smarter to save up the extra sixty bucks and get a proper system.

[–]LordNero 3 points4 points ago

Go to a pool.

Extended Hours During an Extreme Heat Alert

Between July 2 and September 2, some outdoor pools extend their hours until 11:45 pm during Extreme Heat Alerts with low probability of precipitation.

Also a map for the locations of all the city's cooling centres.

Edit: Spelling

[–]urgencyy 4 points5 points ago

this is fucking great

[–]drawingsheep 3 points4 points ago

My air conditioning has been dead for the past two weeks. Since we've never had this happen before, we don't even have little fans or anything. It's been hell. Fuckin' Toronto weather.

[–]redisforever 4 points5 points ago

Fuck. 37? I thought today was hot, and I feel sick from being outside for 20 minutes today.

[–]NeverEnoughCharacter[S] 1 point2 points ago

That's exactly how I felt when I looked at tomorrow's forecast.

[–]Carbuncl3 2 points3 points ago

Freeze some 2L bottles of water, stick them in your pants. Cool all summer.

[–]Mun-Mun 7 points8 points ago

I don't even have AC. SUCK IT UP

[–]easywriter 6 points7 points ago

Remaining cool can be free at any time of day!

  • hospital ERs (just take a seat and everyone will probably ignore you)
  • hotel lobbies
  • coffee shops (if req'd to buy a drink, get a tea with the bag and reuse it)
  • casinos
  • the subway (9AM-130AM)
  • Designated city cooling centres

You should easily be able to kill 2 or 3 days rotating through this list.

[–]CornishBin 13 points14 points ago

Libraries. Malls. Friends w/ AC.

[–]easywriter 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I left off libraries and malls because they aren't 24/7 (as far as I know!). Though if you have a researcher's library card many university libraries will let you use the facilities 24/7, or give you an office. So good call on that. "Friends" is a good one though.

[–]burgess_meredith_jr 17 points18 points ago

I'd rather fucking melt than voluntarily spend time in the ER.

[–]Thinc_Ng_Kap 5 points6 points ago

Then get sick after sitting in the ER.

[–]kikikills 4 points5 points ago

The problem is when you need to sleep. I cannot fucking sleep right now because I can barely breathe.

Also, trying to be positive and helpful around people without air conditioning is a losing battle. We are moody assholes.

[–]themooninthesky 2 points3 points ago

This.

Also, I am literally trapped inside my house today, I sat in the yard for about a minute or two, and I started to have an asthma attack. So even if say, I wanted to go to the pool that is a literal 5 minute walk from my house, I could not do it. Someone would probably need to call 911 for me.

My saving grace right now is the basment, a fan, and a dehumidifier. And not moving. I still can't really breathe though. This is about all I am capable of.

[–]brlito 0 points1 point ago

Just sleep in the tub, bring a sleeping bag.

[–]ShiftyBizniss 1 point2 points ago

-your place of work

[–]Trackpad94 2 points3 points ago

I've had no hydro to our AC or stove/oven for the past week. It's routinely above 80 F inside the house. Get on my level. Fortunately they're fixing it today, oven works but I still haven't noticed the central air kick in...

[–]buddyigetit 2 points3 points ago

I hear you man, I basically sleep in a puddle and wake up every twenty minutes to re-hydrate.

[–]Kranar 1 point2 points ago

Honestly, get an ice pack and strap it to your arm. It actually works better than air conditioning, no joke.

[–]ArbitraryPerseveranc 1 point2 points ago

I'm in toronto, but I'm staying in a hotel that has AIR CONDITIONING! YAAAAaaa...wait I gotta work tomorrow. Fuck.

[–]c0rruptioN 1 point2 points ago

You can get an air conditioner at walmart for $100 or less.

[–]NeverEnoughCharacter[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thanks Tips, I'll be sure to pass that on to my landlord.

[–]pasmeme 0 points1 point ago

I am going to the movies to help keep me cool. I never go to the movies, but I know that theatres are always chilly enough for a cardigan. So I'm taking advantage of that since I too have no AC, no blinds and no fan.

[–]brangles 0 points1 point ago

theatres are always chilly enough for a cardigan

I think they scaled this back a few years ago, to be "green" or something. I was humid and uncomfortable at Scotiabank on a 100% humidity day last July. I remember it used to be freezing, now it's barely noticable.

[–]jessew666 0 points1 point ago

just replaced mine the day before that super hot friday we had a couple weeks ago. so happy

[–]psykikduk 0 points1 point ago

You guys are lucky lucky lucky. I do not have A/C at all for this summer because the fan broke in our furnace and they are having a very hard time getting the part in.

[–]ephemera505 0 points1 point ago

My central AC broke down at the beginning of this crazy hot summer. They quoted $5000 which is craziness. So I just use some fans. It was hard the first few nights but you know what? After a while you sort of get used to the heat. Plus I save a bundle on my electricity bill.

[–]coldacid 3 points4 points ago

You know, you could save more by switching to Geico.

[–]J-Red 0 points1 point ago

As an Australian, the weather is really nice and I'm scared of experiencing my first Canadian winter.

[–]AstonMartin2195 0 points1 point ago

I got mine replaced in the spring. Hate to boast, but I do not regret. Last summer my AC stopped working for a week and it got to an incredibly humid 40 degrees. That was not an enjoyable week.

[–]Nextrix 0 points1 point ago

I predict a power outage in the GTA.

[–]echojuliete 0 points1 point ago

So question for everybody. Whats the most generally accurate weather forecaster? The Weather Network seems to fail.

I rode my motorcycle into work today and Im hoping I dont have to go through a storm. 50% chance they say..

[–]daveruiz -1 points0 points ago

It's not that bad, I lived in Los Angeles for 5 years, and yes, while hot, let's not become drama queens over it. Hell I don't have A/C either, just have a cold drink
