Well, yes. On the basis that the photo is a few years old, and rats have a short lifespan. But it's definitely alive in this photo.

Most photos like this come from two sources - Jessica Florence, or Ellen van Deelen.

This photo is of a one of Jessica Florence's rats called Worm. Worm was put to sleep in December 2010, due to a tumour.

Thanks for the proof and especially for the source. I find it kind of amusing and obnoxious that any picture of a sleeping animal on /r/aww gets all of the "This animal is dead, I know because I've seen dead animals" folks posting.

What's sad is your statement is probably true. I have had 3 rats that have passed away in the past several years. Each one has died in this position. And each one has had THAT expression (hard to explain, you just know when you've witnessed it a few times) the day(s) prior to death. It's heart breaking to witness :\
