"Much controversy erupted over the breed when it was recognized by The International Cat Association in 1995 with critics voicing concern over potential health and mobility issues, although such fears have yet to materialize." kinda sad...

[–]dreadredheadzedsdead 50 points51 points ago

They're actually healthy cats, perhaps some back issues in later life. Much healthier than Persians or other pugfaced breeds.

[–]Vaskre 36 points37 points ago

They don't suffer from spinal problems like short-legged dog breeds such as the daschund do. From what I've heard, it's because cats have a more flexible spine, but that might be complete bollocks.

Also, if you are interested in purchasing a munchkin cat, make sure that your breeder does not breed munchkins together. Breeding two munchkins together results in a great deal of dead kittens, sadly. (Once again, so I'm told.)

[–]pseudolobster 62 points63 points ago

Also, don't feed them after midnight.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

It's always midnight somewhere...

[–]InsulinDependent 11 points12 points ago

[–]BongoDaMonkey 1 point2 points ago

Italy :) also 19

[–]Magres 17 points18 points ago

Yeah, munchkinism is caused by a dominant gene (ie you only need one copy of the gene) that is lethal when there are two munchkin genes present. So any munchkins are going to be mM (where M is normal, m is munchkin) and breeding two munchkin cats together will give you 25% MM (normal cats), 50% mM (munchkin cats), and 25% mm (dead kittens).

The exceptionally moronic thing is that if you breed a normal cat and a munchkin, you get 50% MM (normal cats), 50% mM (munchkin cats), so either way gets you the same number of munchkin cats without causing any stillborns. Breeding munchkins with other munchkins isn't even more profitable (it wouldn't a justification to breed them together and risk the dead kittens even if it WERE profitable, but it would at least make it less moronic)

Edit: since there's been controversy over my use of m and M, I didn't know that capital letters are conventionally used for dominant genes, and it made sense to have the lower case 'm' be for munchkinism in my head because 'small m' => 'small kitty'

[–]Phthothy 16 points17 points ago

No, this is incorrect. You have dominant lethal alleles backwards.

M = munchkin allele m = normal allele M > m

The rest is right. Your notation is just... off.

BTW this means that all munchkin cats have only 1 allele for the munchkinism. If that wasn't clear.

Also, I want one.

[–]new_rags 3 points4 points ago

The notation is arbitrary anyway. He specified that M = normal and m = munchkin, so he's fine. The system of capital letter/lowercase letter for dominant/recessive respectively is not used in many disciplines and study systems. The only important thing is that the system is designated explicitly and then used consistently after that.

[–]PA55W0RD 8 points9 points ago

It is pretty standard in Genetics to define the dominant gene as a capital.

[–]Magres 2 points3 points ago

I'm no geneticist, haha, I was just making up my own notation, and making m be for munchkinism made sense because small m = small cat

[–]PA55W0RD 1 point2 points ago

No problem - you understand the stats at least which is why I didn't comment on your post.

I am not a geneticist now, though it is what I started my academic career doing.

[–]new_rags 0 points1 point ago

Depending on what you're working on, the notation you use changes. There is no single standard notation, and in all of them, the key is to define terms and then use them consistently, which OP did.

Edited to add: this isn't a perfect analogy, but correcting OP's notation is more like correcting someone for not using "x" as a variable in a quadratic equation.

[–]PA55W0RD 3 points4 points ago

[–]Magres 0 points1 point ago

I suppose I got the convention wrong, but I agree that notation is arbitrary and simply needs to be declared and used consistently. I'm in grad school for nuclear engineering and have basically never read two journal articles with the same notation, everyone just declares what their variables mean and does their thing, and as long as it's consistent it doesn't matter.

[–]new_rags 0 points1 point ago

I'm a grad student too! Evolutionary biology. I've just seen enough different notation systems that properly following convention seems far less important than using an internally consistent language.

[–]jbo8083 5 points6 points ago

We have two munchkins. They regularly leap onto chairs and counter tops, sprint about the house, and generally engage in all cat activities. They are 5 and 6 years old and have had no health issues whatsoever. They may be at a disadvantage should some feline fisticuffs occur, but we have not experienced any other disadvantages. Here is a pic of Beans as a kitten.

[–]PancakeGenocide 1 point2 points ago

I have two Napoleons, the Munchkin's long-haired cousin. Espresso is seven, Spooky is three. Both of them are capable of jumping on just about anything a normal, long-legged cat can. Neither has had any kid of spinal issues. They are perfectly healthy, if extremely needy.

Also, if anyone is interested in a munchkin or a napoleon, you CAN get them from rescues. I found both of mine on Petfinder. Like cats that want to be in physical contact with you at all times? This is the breed for you.

[–]area-woman 0 points1 point ago

^ this is totally true. I got a toy/miniature tortoise point 1/2 siamese, 1/2 Himalayan from the SPCA. she only weighs 5lbs. She will ALWAYS look like a kitten.

[–]sgehig 0 points1 point ago

" Homozygous embryos for the munchkin gene are not viable due to gene lethality." D:

[–]Stembio 0 points1 point ago

Eh, that's super common. Heterozygotes often have advantageous or desirable genes, while homozygous dominants are lethal. Other examples: in foxes, silver fur arises when the animal is heterozygous, but homozygous dominants die in utero. Or in a non-superficial example: humans with one gene for sickle cell anemia have resistance to malaria. Humans two two copies have sickle cell anemia.

It just means you need to find a reputable breeder who refrains from crossing two munchkins.

[–]Sokonomi 16 points17 points ago

Yet breeding English bulldogs and teacup chihuahuas is entirely fine. ;)

I think these cats are pretty adorable, though id prefer a normal one (well maybe scottish fold, they are karma cannons).

[–]TheActualAWdeV 28 points29 points ago

A scottish fold munchkin. The earth has exploded into rainbows.

[–]Slehpher 6 points7 points ago

As a straight guy I would die at the sight of the amount of cuteness that cat would have.

[–]Scrial 32 points33 points ago

[–]Kind_compliments 4 points5 points ago

Oh my gosh i can't handle it

[–]Woodthrush 6 points7 points ago

I watched every second of that with a silly grin on my face over the sheer amount of CUTENESS in that video. :3

[–]Slehpher 2 points3 points ago

oh yeah, so i saw that video about a few months ago. Still gets me everytime. THAT THING IS WAY TO GOD DAMN CUTE!

[–]Sokonomi 2 points3 points ago

I want to wear it as a facemask. ಠ_ಠ

[–]TheActualAWdeV 1 point2 points ago

Oh wow I didn't expect those to actually exist. That's just ridiculously adorable.

[–]demontaoist 1 point2 points ago

SHAKE IT! SHAKE IT TIL I CAN STANDS ITS CUTENESS!!!!

[–]bacondavis 0 points1 point ago

I want this, but already having 2 cats, I think this kitty would suffer. Being handicapped physically would make him a subordinate in the household. If he can't keep up to the others, he would be considered a runt of the litter? As it stands now one of my cats dominates the other and a munckin would suffer even more.

[–]mnbam23 0 points1 point ago

OMG I WANT ONE.

[–]TheActualAWdeV 3 points4 points ago

Dying as a result of cuteness isn't manly goddamnit! Now stand up straight and take your daily dose of absolute cuteness like a MAN.

[–]Slehpher 2 points3 points ago

Yes Sir! Is it alright if I shed a tear of enjoyment for the life of the animal? Sir!

[–]TheActualAWdeV 2 points3 points ago

Permission granted, private.

[–]Sokonomi 0 points1 point ago

D: Why did you put that image in my head!?!?

[–]TheActualAWdeV 0 points1 point ago

Because it is adorable.

Best not check out Scrial's link in response to the other reply I got on this post. It's a video of an actual scottish fold munchkin.

[–]Lasers_Pew_Pew_Pew 3 points4 points ago

I just watched it, I think I might die of happiness.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Breeding pure-bred cats and dogs is always dangerous. Golden Retrievers get hip problems. Pugs get breathing difficulties and infections in their face. If people bred responsibly it wouldn't be as much of an issue but people see chihuahuas and pugs and think they are ornaments.

[–]mel2mdl 5 points6 points ago

Most of the issues facing purebred animals now can be tested for PRIOR to breeding them, thanks to DNA testing. Good breeders do this. Others think, oh my dog/cat is cute, let's have babies.

If you love the species, look for a reputable breeder - one that does DNA testing for breed specific illness, has a guarantee against those illnesses, will let you visit before hand and asks you questions. If you don't want to spend the money, go with a rescue.

[–]SpleeBeans 2 points3 points ago

The thing is, munchkins can't be bred to be purebreds. That kills the kittens. They need one parents without the munchkin gene. Therefore their gene pool is rather large, which leads to healthier cats.

[–]Stembio 1 point2 points ago

That is one of the best things about munchkins. You can get a whole variety of cat breeds with the munchkin variation, because it is a dominant mutation. So there's like, persion munchkins, and scottish fold munchkins, and domestic shorthair munchkins. It is awesome!

[–]HyzerFlip -1 points0 points ago

I miss my bully...

[–]ArQuesta 4 points5 points ago

They're nicknamed carpet rockets. Evidently it doesn't affect their internal parts and their lifespans are the same. If you ever got the chance to see one, you'd notice that they have a great time.

Sometimes it happens completely randomly. My friend who breeds cats knew a woman who ended up with an entire litter of Singapura munchkins out of seemingly nowhere. Yay genetics.

[–]berklee 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, it's sad that although no apparent related health problems have surfaced in the years they've existed, people still continue to bring up these concerns.

[–]swiper69 3 points4 points ago

"The International Cat Association" I can't help but imagine a group of half-deaf elderly women arguing with each other about cat nip

This Corgie business needs to end. No more karma for Corgies! Also, in the cat world it's a munchkin. Corgies are a breed of dog and the name does not apply to all things with short legs. Next thing we'll see is dachshunds being called Corgies, and then there will be no reason for the world to go on.
