[–]Xerazal 30 points31 points ago

Wow.. I'm gonna go cry in a corner now..

[–]Neo-Antique 17 points18 points ago

Which one? There's the emo corner, the time-out corner, the fourth corner, and the corn corner.

[–]godmoderage 5 points6 points ago

He could cry in all four in certain states.

[–]Xerazal 0 points1 point ago

My emo corner is also my time-out corner, fourth corner, and corn corner.. I multitask that shit out of that corner.

[–]pujuma 23 points24 points ago

in the arms of an angel....

I will get my revenge by redditing the entire fucking week

[–]mr-peabody 5 points6 points ago

so... business as usual?

[–]Brotherauron 24 points25 points ago

Did you actually request off and get approved? cuz if you did you can call HR on that.

[–]Mr_Titicaca 10 points11 points ago

Some lady tried to pull that shit on a co-worker of mine. She was too scared to lose her job so she didn't say anything.

[–]kg333 1 point2 points ago

HR's primary job is to protect the company from employees. I don't think there's any legal requirement to grant time off even if approved, so I don't think they'd be particularly interested.

[–]b0w3n 1 point2 points ago

Depends on if you have a contract or not. Accrued time and all that, and then having been approved can be legally actionable. Especially if you make plans, spend money, all that.

You can ask for remittance/compensation on top of that. Of course you'll probably get treated like shit and potentially fired (if they fire you for raising the point that's legally actionable too, assuming, again, you have a contract)

Hopefully OP doesn't work at target or some other hourly wage job.

[–]ForgettableUsername 1 point2 points ago

Keep in mind that in most cases your boss is also an employee.

[–]kg333 0 points1 point ago

Very valid point, although I wouldn't recommend getting into the "which employee is less problematic to get rid of" game with HR, either.

[–]ForgettableUsername 0 points1 point ago

That depends on the corporate culture, I guess, and also on state laws. If it's a boss with a history of complaints or a pattern of discrimination, it's sometimes less problematic to get rid of the boss... and sometimes there are other resources available too.

All things being equal, it generally is in the company's best interest to resolve the situation in a way that they don't have to fire anybody. Hiring and training employees is expensive. Wrongful termination lawsuits are expensive.

Dude, time to get a new job...

I know that sounds completely rash / ridiculous especially since it's hard to get a job these days but still, if you already established previously that you were going to take a week off...just wtf.

Did your boss at least try to compensate in some way shape or form? And I don't mean a bullshit, "Oh man, you're the bomb"

[–]dane83 9 points10 points ago

Sometimes it just happens in the working world, man.

On the first night of my first vacation in a year and a half, I get a call from my boss telling me his dad has had a stroke and he's on his way to him in a town about 5 hours away. It was only me, him, and one other manager at the time, so I sucked it up and drove home from my vacation spot (it was only an hour away, so not that terrible) and covered for him.

[–]warnerrr 1 point2 points ago

You're a good person. More people like you are needed in today's workforce.

[–]graffiti81 6 points7 points ago

Bullshit. Most people already sacrifice a lot for their jobs. There needs to be a backup plan in place for a business in a case like this.

[–]FinnTheFickle 4 points5 points ago

As someone who's worked mostly for small businesses, that's not always possible. My boss was always fair about overtime, providing vacation, etc., but sometimes things come up and you have to be the guy they can count on.

Now, if this kind of thing happens with worrying frequency... yeah, maybe it wouldn't hurt to look for a new job.

[–]graffiti81 2 points3 points ago

I work in an office with a total of 4 people who are there all the time (plus two outside salesmen).

We make it work. We schedule vacations around each other and if something comes up, we suck it up and don't ever ask a person to come back from vacation. That's a rule, you never call anyone on vacation, except the boss who actually stays in contact daily anyway.

[–]FinnTheFickle 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I must admit nothing of the sort ever happened to me. Just it's a trust thing. If I believed my boss honestly had no way to make it work without me skipping vacation, I'd suck it up (so long as I got to take my vacation later, of course.)

[–]graffiti81 0 points1 point ago

I already get fucked by vacations, so I would tell them to go shit in a hat.

I'm one of two people in the whole company that is hourly and gets overtime. Instead of averaging my hours and paying me anything for my average overtime, I get straight 40 hours which is a 'vacation week', which cuts my paycheck by about 20%. Everyone who is hourly gets 40 hours, even if they average 35.

So ya, they can call one of the salaried guys if they need coverage on a vacation, I'm already taking it in the ass.

[–]b0w3n 0 points1 point ago

The companies that do that often will compensate people anyways.

The ones who are just like "uh yeah you need to be here that week you're on vacation because we're retraining people" probably wouldn't even listen if you went on and on about paying you back for plane tickets and hotel rooms.

I'd just uh, not show up. But that's a luxury I have not many do.

[–]HuevoSplash 0 points1 point ago

Don't ever pick up the phone.

[–]b0w3n 0 points1 point ago

They have my cell in case of emergencies. I make them leave a message and I determine if it's an emergency. I will occasionally get calls of "the printer won't print" still but when I don't call back for a week it someone gets fixed without me.

Yes I remember being a young lad coming in and fixing an out of paper error on my vacation and that was the end of that.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points ago

Yes because Americans don't sacrifice nearly enough. We only work more time and take fewer vacation days than the rest of the industrialized world.

The live to work attitude in the US makes me sick.

[–]Warning_BadAdvice 2 points3 points ago

But places like Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, and France work a whole lot less. I like those places.

[–]physicscat -1 points0 points ago

The middle class standard of living is the same as poverty level here in the U.S., too.

[–]warnerrr 0 points1 point ago

I'm not saying that more people need to sacrifice their time to their employer, I'm talking about people who are understanding and care about their fellow worker, whether it be their boss or not, and are willing to help out in a time of need.

[–]ForgettableUsername 0 points1 point ago

We work way more time than the rest of the world, but honestly we don't work very hard.

[–]HuevoSplash 0 points1 point ago

Meh - company/employee loyalty isn't much of a two way road anymore.

[–]andy360 5 points6 points ago

Sarah McLachlan's cat.

[–]Myrandall 0 points1 point ago

I'd be sad too if I were her cat

[–]joculator 4 points5 points ago

Tell him to fuck off?

[–]mrtvamacka 7 points8 points ago

This is not real.. I never heard cats could cry.. Can they?

[–]charleyface 10 points11 points ago

If there's some shit in their eye that causes it to water, then yes. But not from sadness, so don't fret.

[–]thefran 5 points6 points ago

Cats do not experience sadness. They experience dissatisfaction over lack of suffering people undergo.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

:'(

[–]deepobedience 3 points4 points ago

That is the saddest thing I have ever seen...

[–]adlist 1 point2 points ago

[–]FredL2 1 point2 points ago

What the hell did I just watch?

[–]wtfmanquestionmark 1 point2 points ago

Always ask for time off in advance. If they agree to it then don't let them reschedule you. End of story.

[–]skdavis731 1 point2 points ago

In the arms of an angel....

[–]logicallyillogical 0 points1 point ago

[–]zinconinco13 -1 points0 points ago

Be grateful you have a job.

edit: I love how I'm being downvoted for not sucking the dick of first world problems.

[–]dafuqdidIwrite -2 points-1 points ago

The saddest thing I've seen in a long time... I know, or rather I read in one of the comments below, that cats don't cry outta grief... but I disagree.... Science is wrong... Studies are wrong.... Research is wrong... If this is not sadness, nothing else in the world is... Made me tear up Damnit! ... Now I am sad ... :' (

[–]rggb -2 points-1 points ago

Can someone put this face on this guy? Please.

[–]plusninety -3 points-2 points ago

Well I'm sorry about your boss but this is hilarious.

[–]bleunt -1 points0 points ago

"Can't hug every cat." And this was the one left without a hug.
