Go visit /r/teenagers then, that might be fun for you.

[–]Squishumz 15 points16 points ago

Oh wow, some of those comments are painful to read.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

I like how they have the daily themes for the week listed. They're all going to plan a week ahead for every post.

Can I downvote a subreddit?

[–]Cooler-Beaner 3 points4 points ago

I didn't think it could be that bad. It Was!

[–]IsaacAccount 2 points3 points ago

I SAW SOMEONE USE THE WORD YOLO. Finally, first time I've seen it. I threw up a little in my mouth.

[–]REDDITvTIDDER 1 point2 points ago

I saw a grown man wearing a shirt with it on. It was at least a 4x I didn't know whether to admire or be disgusted.

[–]veryoriginal78 1 point2 points ago

I had no idea this was an actual subreddit, so when you mentioned it, I imagined all these extremely cliche posts about relationship advice and bad acne. So I clicked on it. Was not disappoint.

Why don't you have seat right over there...

No need to state your age. You're just making a fool out of yourself by doing so. Now if your comment was like this:

"My god. Havent facepalmed that much this entire night. Reading some of those was just horrible."

You probably would have gotten upvoted. Don't separate yourself from the rest of us like you're some god among men just because you found it pitiful. You look like a fool when you do it.

[–]trolltamer5 0 points1 point ago

Right, I am not going to go there if they use yolo .

I blame the parents for letting toddlers on Reddit at such an early age.

The problem is the stereotype, which is that teenagers love giving advice, and that advice is usually terrible.

Anecdotally, I can confirm this is the usual way things are.

[–]fuzzyish 5 points6 points ago

That's a stereotype?

[–]Rosalee 0 points1 point ago

O is this why the old lady up the street told me, 'if you want to know something ask a teenager?'

[–]anduin1 23 points24 points ago

Granted people are being snarky about taking advice from anyone but seriously, teenagers don't know shit. The few exceptions that exist out there of people who were forced to grow up at an early age are ones who's opinions I might consider more strongly than a regular 15 year old who thinks he has shit figured out because of some shit they learned in social studies. The advice ladder does have a hierarchy and kids and teenagers are at the bottom of it.

[–]Klowned 13 points14 points ago

When I was 10, I hated 5 year olds. When I was 15, I hated 10 year olds. When I was 20, I hated 15 year olds. CTRL + C, CTRL + V, edit...

tl;dr I'm kind of well educated, 5 years later, oh wait, I didn't know shit, now I have it figured out.

You're going to reach 80 years old, be lying on your death bed, look back and say "damn..." Then pop.

But what the fuck do I know, I'm 9.

[–]melance 2 points3 points ago

I realized early on that I didn't know shit. As I've gotten older and learned more, I've only come to realize how much more shit I don't know.

[–]unit787 4 points5 points ago

I'm 17 and I know better than to generalize like that. When looking at someones advice, why would age be such a definitive factor in deciding whether to follow it or not? Maybe the actual advice, how this knowledge was attained, has it worked before? Stuff like that. A 22 year old doesn't know more about everything than me just because he's 22.

[–]LULBASAUR 10 points11 points ago

It entirely depends on the type of advice being given, and the person giving it. If a 15-year-old here in the UK wanted advice on their GCSEs, a 17-year-old would be much better equipped to advise them than a 40-year-old would, as when the 40-year-old took their exams there will have been no standardised coursework, they will only have to have taken one science exam, and there were no A* grades.

Conversely, a teenager would probably be bad at offering advice on parenthood or which post-grad course to take.

EDIT: Spelling.

[–]caligula213 2 points3 points ago

If a 15-year-old here in the UK wanted advice on their GCSEs

Then they should be posting in /r/teenagers.

[–]LULBASAUR 1 point2 points ago

This concept is Universal, and does not apply solely to reddit. Besides the fact that the OP was talking about a post giving advice, not asking for it, I have seen one post recently about A-Levels/GCSEs on /r/teenagers, and it was not accepted well by those who are not British. Here it is.

EDIT: It was misinterpreted by one person, who themselves were not received very well, apologies.

[–]heartbbeat 11 points12 points ago

but seriously, teenagers don't know shit.

It is entirely possible for a teenager to be more educated about certain topics than an adult. I don't understand the rush to hate teenagers on Reddit, like they don't get shit on enough already.

I remember being a teenager and having adults tell me I was wrong about things just because of my age, even when it was an opinion commonly held by a large group of people. Think any divisive issue, really. If a teenager is pro choice they can be told "you'll understand/agree with me when you're older" by a pro lifer who is in their forties, and they're expected to accept this.

It's called adultism, and your comment is a manifestation of it.

[–]Rainbow_Dosh 3 points4 points ago

This is true. But still, most teenagers think they can good advice even when it's shit. It's lack of experience. It may not be true in all cases, but in most it is true.

[–]heartbbeat 6 points7 points ago

What exactly is the point of trying to establish "most of this demographic is like this"?

Why not just listen to the content of what they say? You don't always need experience in something to be able to give an opinion about it. Sometimes a fresh perspective can help.

And furthermore, experience with what exactly? If it's being self supporting/working a fulltime job, quite a few adults in their early to late twenties (depending on how much education they pursue) don't have that experience either. If it's living on your own even with the help of parents/loans, a good portion of that demographic also live at home and commute to school.

Even if what you say is true, that doesn't make it okay to ridicule them for it or write off any opinion they have outright (which this thread does.)

I can't really think of any area that adults always have experience in, besides perhaps enjoying the freedom that being an adult allows them. Perhaps interpersonal relationships/romantic relationships, but it could be argued that you don't really get objectively better at handling those, the concerns just change as you age and move into different peer groups. Good example is the immaturity at work thread from the other day.

[–]Rainbow_Dosh 0 points1 point ago

I do listen, and no not every situation needs experience for proper advice. The experience can be anything. It's situational, like if you were talking about how to deal with a problem with your kid, a teenager most likely isn't going to know that. Most teenagers lack that level of experience.

I'm not saying to write off any opinion teenagers have. That's just foolish. This thread does do that, as well as a lot of other places. Just for being a teenager you will get shit. I get shit all the time if I mention that I'm a teen (Downvote train, here I come...).

A few examples I can think of on the spot are:

  • Real estate.

  • Properly dealing with kids.

  • Dealing with sticky situations.

Yeah, some adults might not be able to answer some of these, but I'd assume most teens wouldn't be able to answer these either. As I said, it depends on the situation.

My argument was/is pretty bad, my apologies. Please don't verbally curb-stomp my argument with the force of 1000 men.

[–]heartbbeat 2 points3 points ago

While teenagers in general are more limited (mostly by society) in the experiences they can have with adult subjects, that still isn't a good reason to discard advice being given out by teenagers. That's like saying "In general, African Americans are poorer therefore if they are responding in a thread related to a problem that has to do with being middle class, I should abandon this thread." It is true that African Americans on average are poorer in the United States due to systematic oppression, but it essentially has no bearing on the merit of advice received from an individual.

Additionally, not having personally experienced a subject doesn't necessarily mean that good advice cannot be rendered on it. If a teenager who hasn't had sex gives the advice to have safe sex to someone who is sexually active and not engaging in safe sex, I don't think many people would agree that the teenager is speaking out of school. Another example is a woman being beaten by her husband. Very few people (both teenagers and adults) have experience with that, but most people would give the advice to leave the husband. Why is that advice wrong when it comes out of the mouth of a teenager?

My point is, the content of advice is what should really matter. The idea that most adults could give better advice about real estate (or really any specific subject) than teenagers is ridiculous. Look at the 2008 housing market crash, which consisted of many adults taking out loans they couldn't afford and lenders giving them loans they knew they couldn't afford. Look at how even experts disagree about basic things related to it. In the end, most things are subjective. Pick and choose what works for you, based on what you research as accurate and self examination with trial and error.

[–]Rainbow_Dosh 0 points1 point ago

Your argument wins... By a lot...

[–]ACEmat -1 points0 points ago

I've been trying to think of a decent way to explain the exact same thing you just did. But you just did it in a much better way I could, (Those analogies helped a lot) and also being a 15 year-old myself, I thank you for the defense of my age group. (Even though most of them are utter morons.)

[–]Bipolarruledout 1 point2 points ago

[–]Aieolos 1 point2 points ago

Ha-ha yeah! Fuck teenagers! They all suck and... Oh wait, I'm actually a part of that hated demographic. No Circlejerk for me :(

I guess I'll get off your lawn then.

[–]Graywolves 0 points1 point ago

Yeah the "age is just a number" rhetoric is annoying. That number is a measurement of how long you've been alive and the older you get the more experiences and opportunities are possible. Some kids get many experiences for their age but most really don't understand how little they know and how limited their perspective is.

[–]Mortuseon -1 points0 points ago

I agree to some extent, but I find it difficult to accept the sentiment of rejecting advice from all teenagers purely on the grounds that 'they generally aren't experienced'. Maturity is acquired, yes, but it is acquired at different stages of individuals' lifetimes, depending on their circumstance. Consequently, it is possible to find very immature individuals that are legally adults, and (one might say surprisingly) mature individuals who are in their teens. I agree with you in part, but I think it is important to consider the character of the person before disregarding their advice. Or rather, consider the usefulness of the advice itself. That is, after all, where the proof will lie.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Rainbow_Dosh 4 points5 points ago

Because typing skills automatically count more than experience? It could be good advice. But it probably isn't, because they're probably fucking idiotic and full of themselves like everyone else in their teenage years.

[–]ACEmat 0 points1 point ago

full of themselves like most people are in their teenage years.

FTFY

Fifteen year old here as well; I'm not really appreciating the "Every Teen is an immature, idiotic, lack of common logic vegetable."

[–]oogmar 1 point2 points ago

The problem here is that every adult who has mass generalizations about teenagers 1. is suffering from the immature need to mass generalize and 2. has been a teenager themselves and knows exactly how fucking awful teenagers are.

Yes, there are teenagers way ahead of the curve on maturity or intelligence or occasionally even understanding people. I was forced to grow up really fast, I remember distinctly how alien teenager's problems felt to me.

I also look back now (And I'm not that old! I'm barely 24! I'm just a whippersnapper) at how incredibly little I knew when I was 15-18, and how much I learned at 19. It's a different path for everybody, but fact is that teenagers seem to suffer from this "Yes, I see how you can see that about other people my age but THAT'S NOT ME."

See also the fact that your prefrontal cortex isn't done growing. There are certain points of view you are literally incapable of fully understanding for a few years.

That said, most of my friends are in their late 20s/early 30s so I really have little to none interaction with kids/teenagers these days. I don't know what's going on with you guys, but I hear your public education sucks.

[–]Rainbow_Dosh 0 points1 point ago

16 here, just stating the truth. You'll see when you're older.

[–]ACEmat 0 points1 point ago

Yes because of the difference of one year in age you understand how all teenagers work.

Isn't that the exact same thing that you were arguing? That teenagers don't know anything? But you're here saying you know how all teenagers work? You're just as wrong as all the other adults here saying all teenagers are morons. And you're wrong because you continue to say "All."

[–]Rainbow_Dosh 0 points1 point ago

Did I ever state that me being older mean anything? No, I'm just backing the general opinion, which happens to be fairly true. Nor did I ever say that teens don't know anything. I said that we're stupid & inexperienced. Which is obviously an exaggeration of the truth. There will be situations in which the teenager is more experienced. There will be situations where the teenager is smarter. It's all situational.

[–]ACEmat 0 points1 point ago

I misinterpreted when you said

16 here, just stating the truth. You'll see when you're older.

Anyways. If you believe it's an exaggeration of the truth, then why do you insist on becoming a part of the Hive Mind? And the Hive Mind insists we don't know shit. So if you back them, that is what you believe.

[–]Rainbow_Dosh 0 points1 point ago

When did I insist we become part of the hive mind?

[–]ACEmat 0 points1 point ago

No, I'm just backing the general opinion, which happens to be fairly true.

The only general opinion here is that of the Hive Mind, and that opinion is that we know nothing.

[–]Gag3b69 -1 points0 points ago

It's the parenting advice that kills me.

[–]Hammyman 0 points1 point ago

And then you get to my age and find yourself repeating the same stuff to your kids that your parents said to you and find your kids ignoring it just the same as you did.

One wonders how further along mankind would be if we actually listened instead of having to find out the hard way that they were right.

[–]Hammyman 0 points1 point ago

Redditors forget that you should take full advantage of teenagers. Ask them about everything whilst they still know it all.

[–]condescendingHater -2 points-1 points ago

The irony of this post amazes me. This website is nothing but preteens, regressed adults, and folks going through mid-life crises.

[–]Eogris 8 points9 points ago

And condescending haters.

[–]timberwolf5922 0 points1 point ago

so.... I guess r/funny is r/reactiongifs now?

[–]KousKous 1 point2 points ago

I know. People know nothing until they enter your demographic and then forget what they've learned as soon as they leave it.

[–]whaleonstiltz 0 points1 point ago

Not all teens on reddit are retarded like the ones on /r/teenagers. When I feel like a dumb teen I can always look at those people and laugh.

[–]Ottergame 1 point2 points ago

It's not a matter of intelligence, it's a mater of experience. Typical teenager-given advice is parroted from someone else; it doesn't come from first hand experience.

[–]whaleonstiltz 0 points1 point ago

I suppose, I don't really give advice but when I do its from either first hand or at least really close family experiences
