Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]helluinbert 1062 points1063 points ago

I see you got there. Would love to read about your journey back again.

[–]soyabstemio 449 points450 points ago

Did you simply walk there?

[–]Tactful 316 points317 points ago

Someone should do one of those fake live-tweet things of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. @FrodosJourney.

"Ringwraith attacked again. Hid under tree. #HobbitSwag."

"Met Strider. He has many names. Emailing him is difficult."

They could do multiple characters and have them interact.

"@BoromirsJourney Yo your brothers a right dick. @PippinsJourney agrees."

[–]elenazz 76 points77 points ago

You should do it, this comment alone was great.

[–]gviekman 42 points43 points ago

Make this happen immediately. In real time maybe? I mean, you could skip the first 17 years I suppose.

[–]injuredtea 44 points45 points ago

I would shave my balls to see this happen.

[–]grimman 18 points19 points ago

If I was interested in seeing this come to fruition I'd up the ante by claiming I'd shave someone else's balls.

I am, however, not.

[–]counttotoo 5 points6 points ago

If that was the case, would you be having any particular pair of balls on your mind, or just random "any guys balls"?

[–]Sythus 9 points10 points ago

you should shave your balls already for the aerodynamics. If op does this, you should shave his name into your pubs.

[–]lovemyguitar 10 points11 points ago

I'd follow the shit out of all of them.

[–]PoisonLily 8 points9 points ago

You should be the one doing it, that was pure gold.

[–]BMWxX 267 points268 points ago

Impossible. One does not simply walk there.

[–]I_STAB_HIPSTER_FILTH 62 points63 points ago

He had an eagle give him a lift. Why don't others think of it?

[–]EltaninAntenna 6 points7 points ago

Or QWOP there, for that matter.

[–]anti_song_sloth 44 points45 points ago

I'd rather just watch the documentaries.

[–]kaimason1 192 points193 points ago

So, how's that finger?

[–]MalvinO 58 points59 points ago

That's Frodo, There and Back Again is the Hobbit, about and by Bilbo.

[–]jaxonya 72 points73 points ago

AMA request, Bilbo.

[–]balboschwaggins 45 points46 points ago

I'll let him know.

[–]teraflop 19 points20 points ago

Right, but Bilbo never went to Mordor, did he?

[–]features4creatures 16 points17 points ago

SPOILER ALERT:

No, he didn't. He traveled quite a bit but Hobbiton and Rivendell (and eventually the Undying Lands) were his only real homes.

edit: Spoiler alert. Sorry folks.

[–]LinkRazr 10 points11 points ago

SPOILER ALERT

[–]mikemcg 65 points66 points ago

I think over seventy years is well past the spoiler statute of limitations.

[–]GentleChainsaw 15 points16 points ago

JULIET DIES??? Spoiler alert, FFS!

[–]stonewiki 4 points5 points ago

SPOILER ALERT Bruce Willis was dead all along!

[–]MalvinO 8 points9 points ago

That's like writing "SPOILER ALERT: Gravity is real" at the beginning of a physics textbook or biography of Issac Newton.

Also, writing where a character lives hardly counts as spoiler. Besides, if you recognize those names you already know he has been there (or should).

[–]fomoloko 87 points88 points ago

Where is this?

[–]fastredb 107 points108 points ago

Google's Image search says it is Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano.

[–]jsantos17 51 points52 points ago

Yep. Live three hours away from there.

[–]comodin 17 points18 points ago

just go to google images and paste "http://i.imgur.com/zDX6I.jpg" into the box. i didnt know this was possible, but it asks if you want to "search by image" and tells you where it is--pretty awesome

[–]RamblinWreckGT 139 points140 points ago

Mordor, clearly.

[–]wheeldonkey 8 points9 points ago

My thoughts, exactly... This picture is absolutely amazing.

[–]Gerka 7 points8 points ago

Red Mountain, Vvardenfell

[–]royalsego 214 points215 points ago

what are the blue and red dots?

[–]_psyFungi 171 points172 points ago

It will be artefacts/noise from the digital camera in low-light. Nothing more, sorry.

[–]omnopticon 39 points40 points ago

Yep. More specifically 'hot pixels', which is a type of fixed pattern noise explained nicely along with the two other types of noise here.

[–]spyd3rweb 4 points5 points ago

usually the hot pixels are static (non-changing) and can be fixed by taking a long exposure of the lens cap and subtracting the noise captured from all your images. They really only show up on exposures over 2 seconds with high ISO settings.

[–]Asassinsneed 11 points12 points ago

Here you are! Simple noise filter wouldn't do it so I fixed it by hand.

[–]Thydamine 582 points583 points ago

[–]Yoyo8 40 points41 points ago

[–]cynognathus 13 points14 points ago

I'm not... I'm not in a closet.

[–]tarantulizer 36 points37 points ago

Conveniently, they also restore your mana.

[–]Naggers123 24 points25 points ago

I'll stick to Stem Cells, thank you very much

[–]SoggyTabernacle 71 points72 points ago

I wish just one person would give a real answer. But everyone's gotta be a funny man...

[–]SitnaltaPhix 12 points13 points ago

They are called "hot pixels." An artifact in CMOS cameras caused by dark current (the spontaneous firing of a pixel without light) and a long term exposure. Most cameras have a setting that'll eliminate them.

This camera has it pretty bad though. I'd either send it in for repair or start browsing Amazon for a replacement.

[–]NeuroticBitch 32 points33 points ago

You're right, every time it always turns into humour, I think it might be because people don't have the technical knowledge to explain what was there so they feel the need to be funny about it in order to hide behind a curtain so that nobody knows they can't really explain it. Every time I see a good post and want to have information about it in the comments, I always find a bunch of jokes highly upvoted and need to dig down and filter all of these in order to get the informative or interesting comments.

[–]technical_difficulty 16 points17 points ago

I prefer informative as well, but making a good joke doesn't constitute hiding behind a curtain of ignorance in shame or something.

[–]HaMMeReD 58 points59 points ago

Hot pixels on the sensor.

Edit: Did you know most digital camera's take 2 exposures when you go very long at night. The first is to capture the image, and the second is to identify and remove hot-pixels.

Hot pixels tend to go up if your camera is over-heating and cooling your camera system can help (I believe astro-photographers do this to ensure that the super long exposures are as noise free as possible).

[–]Zoloir 21 points22 points ago

But then the camera will remove the volcano!

[–]BassheadPanda 36 points37 points ago

The same image with no artifacts.

[–]LordCanti 13 points14 points ago

Well actually with a lot more artifacts, but not the hot pixel artifacts in question.

[–]jusu 4 points5 points ago

It's a good question. They are hot pixels in the digital camera. It would be interesting why the OP decided not to use noise canceling or did he use such an old camera that it did not have in camera noise canceling.

They make an amazing picture rather puzzling, it's weird why one would leave such an obvious and easy to fix flaw in such a great picture.

[–]smguy101 6 points7 points ago

I believe the dots are a result of using a slower ISO speed/film in order to capture pictures easier at night.

[–]HaveaManhattan 5 points6 points ago

Weather for the town: A light lava drizzle, so you might want to bring your heat shield umbrella.

[–]yotee 1646 points1647 points ago

No, the picture does not explain itself. A title explaining the picture instead of baiting for views would have been appreciated.

Edit: I will take this short moment of upvotery to point everyone to the reddiquette page.

[–]CampBenCh 724 points725 points ago

From the Atlantic.com: (#22)"Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano spews molten rocks and large clouds of gas and ash on November 30, 2010. (REUTERS/Carlos Campana)"

[–]apathy 650 points651 points ago

It's a good thing people don't link to the source of pictures and information about them! It would be a shame if establishments like the Atlantic were able to collect a few pageviews for the trouble of sourcing, describing, and paying for the photos, along with offering proper credit to the photographers.

In other words, fuck the OP of the Imgur'ed picture for this.

[–]Khiva 223 points224 points ago

Imagine if some redditor had taken this picture himself, then posted it, gave it the proper title and explained what it was.

Then someone reposted it to 9gag with this derpy title.

The butthurt would be nuclear.

[–]Brownrainboze 43 points44 points ago

The possibility of radioactive butthurt hadn't crossed my mind till now.

[–]drunkdoor 21 points22 points ago

Familiar twist: Redditor takes a picture and a news outlet source uses the pic without permission.

Butthurt galore.

[–]catmoon 42 points43 points ago

a shame if establishments like the Atlantic were able to collect a few pageviews

The Reddit admins actually blocked The Atlantic a while ago [link] because their staff were spamming the site. They apparently removed it from their blacklist recently though.

[–]arayta 4 points5 points ago

Wasn't the Atlantic banned from reddit for some really stupid reason?

[–]TaxidermyRobot 2 points3 points ago

Do you have a source? I remember hearing Business Insider Business Week getting banned, but not the Atlantic. I'll try searching for it in the mean time.

Edit: ah well quick google search found a bunch. Here's quote from a random article I clicked.

Community news sharing site Reddit is now restricting its users from submitting links from a handful of high-profile web publications, including BusinessWeek, The Atlantic, Phys.org, GlobalPost, and ScienceDaily

Source

[–]schwab002 8 points9 points ago

Thank you, I was wondering where this was.

[–]xsanctom 5 points6 points ago

That would have been a much better title.

[–]schwab002 70 points71 points ago

Agreed. I hate titles like this.

[–]biggmclargehuge 52 points53 points ago

Volcanologist here, I can confirm that the picture is in fact a volcano.

[–]kingguru 1 point2 points ago

Pedantic guy here. You are wrong. The picture is in fact a picture, but it might very well be a picture of a volcano.

[–]uncommonpanda[!] 12 points13 points ago

thank you.......gettin sick of this karma baiting shit.

[–]MonocledOctopus 135 points136 points ago

It appears to be Ecuador's Turguraha volcano.

[–]adrian5b 87 points88 points ago

[–]CakeSmasher 256 points257 points ago

I don't know, but it's defiantly not a volcano.

[–]hawthorneluke 4 points5 points ago

Thanks. Obviously being the 100th person to use a lord of the rings meme and the like is far more interesting than finding out about what on earth this actually is.

[–]milfshakee 10 points11 points ago

Hot pixels, hot pixels everywhere. Great shot though! Where was this?

[–]bobsagetfullhouse 14 points15 points ago

Imagine waking up and looking out your window and seeing that. "Hey hunny..you have a good night sleep... WHAT THE FUCK"

[–]Ortekk 15 points16 points ago

I would acually want to experience it once. It must be a real taste of Doom acending on the area, only way I can imagine it.

I've seen some real cool and scary weather conditions, and I've always gone away with a feeling of fulfillment.

Like the one time I was on a small ferry in the middle of a freak storm, bawled my eyes out from fear of dying. But after a month or so I felt that it was a good experience. I got to one edge of conciusness few experience and I learned more about myself.

You always portray yourself in moments like those, they are never true. I thought I would puke and be dizzy during a storm like that. In reality I was a freaked out landcrab thinking it was his last moment.

[–]noveltylife 9 points10 points ago

My city got a ash cloud over it when Eyjafjallajökull erupted. When out to smoke a cigarette with my friend, only thing we felt was "the air is a little crunchy".
