John Cleese says: The wonderful thing about football is how creative it is. And this is why this never caught on in America. You see, in America the action is deliberately kept short, so that the sponsors can get in as many commercials as possible. And also so that the players don't have to think for too long. They get instructions from the quarterback, who has in turn received them from the offensive coach, so no one has to think for themselves. This is the Dick Cheney version of creativity, otherwise known as 'doing exactly what you're told!'

So you get four seconds of extremely violent action, and then the only genuinely creative activity involved - a beer commercial. So american football is played like a series of advertising jingles, while soccer is played like jazz.

That's great. I dig that quote, I love John Cleese. I also get that my joke may not have come across as a joke as there are clearly a lot of soccer fans on here.

But, I'm not America, I don't like football at all, and I'm not even a Dick Cheney supporter.

Seriously, I am glad people love soccer, it's just not my cup of tea. The few games I have seen tend to be on the low-scoring side and I just can't get into the culture of the whole thing. I'm sorry for that.

But there's no reason to assume that everyone who doesn't like soccer is because they watch football, think another sport is better than soccer, or that it's because they love violence and beer commercials, or are somehow less educated on the creativity or athleticism involved.

Not to say however, that I don't fucking love John Cleese, I still think the gif is hilarious, and I'm sure there is a soccer match out there that even I would enjoy.

I've wanted to see Toronto FC, or the Vancouver Whitecaps play for a while now. I guess it's in part I'm intimidated by my lack of knowledge on the sport aside from what I know when I played the thing as a kid or what friends have told me. There's also the culture that I don't really understand. I love watching tennis, or hockey, or going to live basketball games, but I just don't seem to understand the fandom that goes into soccer games. Not to say it's bad, I just don't really get it, it's personally not my taste.

I can see why a low scoring game might be exciting for others and I can see why it might be interesting to watch, and maybe it's just from personal experience or when I played as a kid but I just find most of the games it's a lot of running from one end to another.

Thanks for letting me know though, I plan on visiting a game if I ever travel to the UK or Europe though as I feel like it's sort of part of the cultural experience and worth it. What team is your favourite?
