Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

He must mean 'I like your shallot."

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points ago

this is actually multiple shots put into one image, all the lightning strikes didn't happen at the same time

[–]therus 11 points12 points ago

actually the camera's shutter speed is very very low. not multiple images

[–]archaic37 1 point2 points ago

To capture lighting so well and in shape the shutter speed needs to be fast. If this is a long exposure all the lightning comin down would be solid bars of light.

Overlapping images is extremely easy. If your camera is stable and you shoot a ton of pictures you can throw them all together in a program that overlaps them all.

The photographer did this. 1 set up camera to take pictures every second 2 sit and wait for a while 3 select images that have lightning 4 combine

[–]geak78 0 points1 point ago

You would never "catch" lightning with a fast shutter. You use slow shutter speed and very small aperture so not much light can make it to the film/sensor.

[–]Spiffy313 0 points1 point ago

You need to hit enter twice to line break here. There's also a "Numbers" option if you get RES.

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

I'm on my phone and there are line breaks

[–]layendecker 0 points1 point ago

How do you know this? To me it seems absolutely possible that AIDSLORINH's description is correct. It is how I shoot fireworks or lightening anyway.

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

You are correct this is multiple shots it can't be a long exposure image.

If it was long exposure all the lightning would be blurs and have no definition.

[–]layendecker 0 points1 point ago

Lightening is so fast that it actually won't blur, as I say this could be achieved with a bulb exposure, I feel that it is unlikely however.

I very rarely shoot lightning (never for work) but do fireworks pretty often and the principals are very similar. How I often shoot if with a bulb exposure and a card over the lens, removing it at opportune moments. It is just as easy to do with post produced multiple exposures though.

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

Technically we are both correct. It would not be a good idea to use a bulb setting in such a scenario because that can cause bad exposure spots on the image. So it probably is 30 second lengths over and over.

You are correct about it having slow shutter speed though.

[–]Gonzotron5000 -1 points0 points ago

Also this is 70 different spots.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]DanBrwn 8 points9 points ago

Not at all the same thing, actually.

[–]methoxeta -4 points-3 points ago

How so? It's similar to just taking pictures at all the right times and putting them together in one picture, or leaving the shutter open. It will result in the same thing.

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

To capture lightning you need to have a fast shutter speed so that the lightning has definition. The longer the shutter is open the less definition lightning has.

The water drop pictures are taken with fast shutter speed. If you left the shutter open when taking the water droplet picture you would get a blurry section of where the water droplet fell.

Programs can stack images easily this is probably about 80 pictures stacked not a long exposure.

[–]methoxeta 0 points1 point ago

I didn't say it was one or the other. I said they had basically the same result.

[–]blakeready710 0 points1 point ago

1 picture, and many many pictures put together. Very different thing

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say, that would be fucking terrifying and powerful, like everyone in the shot would be dead. (I mean anyone standing anywhere in the shot even if we can't see them) I base this on nothing.

[–]A_Strangelove -1 points0 points ago

You just Have to ruin things with your logic! >(

[–]Lutenate 2 points3 points ago

so someone counted all of these?

[–]czechthunder 0 points1 point ago

Educated guess...

[–]stfu_n00b 0 points1 point ago

Or the photographer actually gave details about the photo.

[–]knerp 2 points3 points ago

and we'll be coming in for a landing here in beautiful New Mexico this evening. Please fasten your seat belts

[–]darkntk 2 points3 points ago

That AOE spell has some terrible, terrible damage.

[–]Vesania6 2 points3 points ago

it was not a single shot... i'm pretty sure it's a camera trick

[–]archaic37 2 points3 points ago

Set camera to take a picture for 30 seconds. And repeat over and over

Sit back and wait a few hours.

Go home select images with lightning.

Stack images which essentially chooses one background and adds in any differences from the other pictures. In this case the lightning is added in.

[–]GrassGat 6 points7 points ago

If I would have been in that water... dead

[–]cresman430 4 points5 points ago

Hey, aren't you Buzz Lightyear?

[–]GrassGat 2 points3 points ago

I love your movies

[–]Bucky_Ohare 0 points1 point ago

Well, you might actually have stood a chance;

  • As explained, this is a long exposure shot, that didn't happen all at the same time.

  • Water is actually a great way to disperse charge. Assuming you weren't within the immediate 30 feet of a strike, you probably would've been ok. Scared shitless, a bit disoriented, but it's pretty likely you could've survived. Likely, not guaranteed.

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

This not a long exposure. It is a series of images stacked on top of each other.

Yes the photographer say there for a long time with the camera taking pictures every second or every few seconds, but it is not a long exposure.

A long exposure is an image where stationary objects are clear while moving objects likes cars in a city are simply light streaks.

Edit: each image lasts a few seconds if you leave it on for too long it will cause problems

[–]icecool988 1 point2 points ago

incorrect. they are multiple long exposures. 83 minutes of 20 second exposures

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

Also salt is a great conductor if you were even 50 feet away you would get one hell of a shock

[–]Bucky_Ohare 0 points1 point ago

In a direct line, yeah. I pretty much forgot to factor in salinity (for a big derp on my part.) It's still a ton of water to move through, though, I wouldn't want to be there but I think someone would have a fairly decent chance.

In a boat though? Fuck no, that's asking to be the ground.

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

I was in a lake during a storm (flash storm didn't see it coming.) and lightning struck and we felt it tingle I have no clue how far away it was

[–]ThePendulum 0 points1 point ago

Ironically, since this is probably how life was once formed.

[–]jaico 3 points4 points ago

I only counted 69! The OP is a phony!

[–]cubanjew 0 points1 point ago

I instinctively knew someone would count them.

[–]jcos444 1 point2 points ago

I guess this is a repost. However, that looks terrifying

[–]x0rcist 1 point2 points ago

Someone else count those for me.

[–]goawayfools314 1 point2 points ago

Our planet would seem a lot more inhospitable to aliens if we told them about thunderstorms.

"Yeah, sometimes there are storms where giant fatal bolts of electricity come out of the sky with no warning, striking indiscriminately. They usually just set fire to/destroy trees though, so it's fine."

[–]Ghardison 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, is that mordor?

[–]Gavalar 0 points1 point ago

Damn, Cole McGrath gets around

[–]HellHaven 0 points1 point ago

Why don't hydrogen in ocean catch fire?

[–]CPC324 2 points3 points ago

... What

[–]Qquuiinnoonneess 0 points1 point ago

I've always wondered, does lightning hitting the ocean kill fish/ marine life?

[–]ChristopherNP 0 points1 point ago

nope

[–]Kablamm0 0 points1 point ago

And so Duncan MacLeod of the clan MacLeod claims another immortal head... You'll get that prize one day homie.

[–]keyslip 0 points1 point ago

[–]Synux 0 points1 point ago

Long exposure or end of days?

[–]wigglewigglewiggles 0 points1 point ago

Who seriously as bored enough to sit there and count them? ಠ_ಠ

[–]Jamjr89 0 points1 point ago

Many fish died that day

[–]CPC324 0 points1 point ago

storm call...

[–]duchovny -1 points0 points ago

Did you get this from reddit and think that reddit might enjoy it?

Downvoted like it should be.

[–]Fuglypump 0 points1 point ago

There was a storm like that in Ohio a few years back, it was hard to see most of the lightning where I was because there's a lot of trees and it's flat here, but it was earbleedingly loud.

[–]Super_Sieg 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one that remembers all 15 other times this was posted?

[–]safire171 0 points1 point ago

looks like death.

[–]NigerianPuppies 0 points1 point ago

one of my favorite quotes!!!!!!

[–]Black_Tome 0 points1 point ago

Must have taken a lot of mana.

[–]ExposureRep -1 points0 points ago

Great long exposure shot! This would look outstanding in /r/ExposurePorn

[–]archaic37 0 points1 point ago

Yes multiple images stacked on top of each other.

Each image is exposed from 10-30 seconds at a time so probably yes long exposure

[–]chumbubble -1 points0 points ago

This is a long exposure not 70 lightning strikes in one shot.

[–]atnt897 0 points1 point ago

wow repost much...

[–]Phathom -1 points0 points ago

You found Chuck Norris's birth place.
