Exactly - rather than blame God for the accident, they will attribute the miracle of survival to their faith.

The sad thing is that if the driver died, believers in a just universe will start to doubt the faith of their fallen friend. "Maybe [driver] didn't believe strong enough otherwise God wouldn't have killed him. It's punishment."

It's incredibly fucking cruel the way that the "everything happens for a reason" people talk about the sick and dying. "God will heal you if you have enough faith," they tell a dying child as the cancer metastasizes. "You will stop being sick as soon as you truly believe."

The truth is that the only people who believe that "everything happens for a reason" are people who haven't been fucked over by the random events of a chaotic and uncaring universe.
