When all you eat is crap like $1 menu burgers from McDonald's, that's what you become. There's an abundance of cheap crap food in the US that makes the poorer population also the fatter. Weird, and sad.

This is commonly repeated myth. Healthy food is waaaay cheaper than fast food. Fast food is actually rather expensive for what it is. The reason these people are fat is because they chose to eat that way. They could have taken that money to the store and gotten bags of fruit and veg but they didn't. A bag of apples is less than $3. You can get five pounds of potatoes for like $2. These people are fat because of their own life choices, not because society has conspired to make them that way.
Edit: I got downvoted not because my statements are factually inaccurate, but because people like to cling to oft repeated myths because the reality is uncomfortable for them to accept.

Also have to consider food deserts (less grocery stores and more fast food in poorer neighborhoods), and you can't assume the poorest people have they proper equipment to prepare vegetables (working kitchen, pots and pans, etc.).

You don't need a kitchen to eat an apple. Or any fruit for that matter. Hell most vegetables don't need to be cooked. No that's a red herring. It's because they are lazy and they eat at the fast food joint because it's convenient. Sure it might be more difficult to go to the grocery store, but that's not really a good excuse...

Not true. First, if she's homeless she can't cook. So a burger for a buck is a pretty good deal.
Second, if you had a choice between 1/3 of a bag of apples and a burger for dinner, maybe you'd choose the apples, but most people wouldn't.

Because if a bag of apples cost 3 dollars and a burger is one, you would have to eat a third of the bag for it to cost 1 dollar.

While I completely agree with you on the myth thing, you have to consider:
(1) education: most people have no idea that's a myth and can't even understand you can actually COOK meals. My wife worked with people like that, who though you couldn't bake a cake from scratch, you had to buy the cake mixture at the supermarket, for example.
(2) the person's situation: homeless people might get a lot of their food from trash cans and don't always have kitchens to cook in, like someone else pointed out. They can't store ingredients for long. They're limited to what they can find in trash cans or what's given to them. I bet there are plenty of half-eaten burgers/french fries/hoagies in trash cans around your typical fast-foods or office buildings, but not so many fresh apples or tomatoes.
Combine the two, you have the recipe for fat homeless people.
