I guess that is why they call them field trips

[–]mboro19 10 points11 points ago

Baa-zing!

[–]TripperDay 2 points3 points ago

They don't call them house trips.

[–]ftc08 243 points244 points ago

This guy is a pretty fucking brilliant story teller. Get him on a stage with a microphone.

[–]MilkMilkAtheist 63 points64 points ago

Was thinking the same thing

"we were singing songs and shit"

[–]Dracomantis 39 points40 points ago

The way he was telling the story reminded me of how Dave Chappelle does his routines.

Seemingly off the cuff stories filled with the right amount of pauses between the funny as fuck bits.

Edit: way said wat. Thanks to ftc08 for pointing it out, please stop the cascade of downvotes on this fine fellow!

[–]thesundeity 1 point2 points ago

more like chris rock to me.

[–]ftc08 3 points4 points ago

wat?

[–]Deekzlol 1 point2 points ago

way* you grammar nazi you

[–]ColeSloth 16 points17 points ago

He tried SO hard to keep this video from going viral because he thought it would make him look bad for future employment after he finishes his degree up. I wonder if he still thinks that?

[–]zanmanoodle 97 points98 points ago

TIL the word "niglets"

[–]surfinfan21 45 points46 points ago

My racist friend uses this word all the time. It's the only racist thing I find funny every time I hear it.

[–]zanmanoodle 18 points19 points ago

I also just learned earlier this year that "ninja" is a setting-dependent sub for "nigga"

I'm from Georgia, you'd think I would know these sooner.

[–]RogueNine 21 points22 points ago

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
A real gangsta-ass ninja plays his cards right
A real gangsta-ass ninja never runs his fuckin mouth
'cause real gangsta-ass ninja don't start fights

My God, it checks out.

[–]TarzanInAJar 1 point2 points ago

Warning - "ninja" is commonly used by the juggalos.

[–]PatAunces 6 points7 points ago

It's for people who are too afraid to say "nigger" but still think they're being edgy and rebellious by saying a substitute that means the same thing.

[–]DiscordianStooge 6 points7 points ago

It's actually for white people who want to sing rap songs without pissing people off.

[–]po43292 1 point2 points ago

[–]Vorpal_Hammer 1 point2 points ago

[–]atheistoranathiest 0 points1 point ago

[–]graysonkelly 1 point2 points ago

Relevant Donald Glover. "There's something about racism that's... funny... When it's tiny..."

[–]omaha_shanks 16 points17 points ago

Story time. A friend of mine was taking his kids to the county fair, in a minivan with two toddlers, him and his wife, and his father. They pull up to the fair and his dad looks out the window and says "Dear God David, it's like nigglet city out there!" His kids, being toddlers who repeat whatever anyone says, picked up on the word nigglet. For a few weeks they would just walk through the house saying random words and streams of nonsense punctuated by the random shout of nigglet.

[–]saveatreeburnbibles 7 points8 points ago

That may be the only reason I can like kids.

[–]hispanica316 5 points6 points ago

nigga + diglett.

[–]Deekzlol 1 point2 points ago

Donald Glover has a good bit in his "Weirdo" comedy special where he uses the word niglet to great success.

[–]xRags 1 point2 points ago

Saw it live. Hilarious. He even showed us the sign language version of it.

[–]black19 2 points3 points ago

My first encounter with the word. Skip to 6:08 for reference.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFLBL_Ymd3c&sns=em

[–]DrDreampop 1 point2 points ago

I was hoping you were going to link that. It was my first time hearing it too.

[–]SomeoneCoolerThanYou 0 points1 point ago

I live in a town that's about as diverse as you can get, and around my rainbow of friends, that has got to be my favorite word we use.

[–]TheJack38 28 points29 points ago

Thank you so much for linking this. That was fucking hilarious xD

[–]Pixelsandshit 7 points8 points ago

You have the weirdest favorites dude. Seriously WTF

[–]SirCaptain 1 point2 points ago

I have the weirdest boner right now.

[–]Coloneljesus 0 points1 point ago

Glad you like it.

[–]THE_NO_LIFE_KING 15 points16 points ago

This guy needs to be famous.

[–]Heimdall2061 24 points25 points ago

He doesn't want to be. I know him, he asked for the original video to be taken down at one point because he didn't want this to possibly come back and bite him in the ass professionally later on.

[–]mcfattykins 22 points23 points ago

Dude, if I was an employer, I would hire him in a second just so i could hear him tell stories, holy shit.

[–]Errday_Im_Hylian 56 points57 points ago

We were singin' songs 'n shit!

[–]News2date 67 points68 points ago

Ha that's from the video I just watched

[–]uglyfatbroketinycock 2 points3 points ago

Above web link is the only possible response.

[–]mrmonkey3319 1 point2 points ago

It irritated me that this probably wasn't racist at all. If it was a field trip just for black people in the school, sure, but I seriously doubt it. Guy was still a great storyteller.

[–]ahalenia 0 points1 point ago

It has but it's still great.

[–]Rockytriton 0 points1 point ago

Is his tongue orange? maybe from drinking too much orange drink?

[–]LaunchPadMcQ 12 points13 points ago

Good 'ol Robstown, TX. Home of the Nueces County Livestock Show and uhh....sweet tea. Pretty decent sweet tea at Beefy Burger. Also, it had a Wal-Mart, but had to close due to too much internal theft.

Edit: I lived in Bluntzer, went through K-12 in Banquete, and had a Robstown address and phone number.

[–]Terramoura 4 points5 points ago

Don't forget Joe Cotten's Bar-B-Q. Even though it burned down.

[–]LaunchPadMcQ 2 points3 points ago

Ah, yes. It's already slipping from my memory :(

[–]GameIsInTheName 0 points1 point ago

I heard a rumor that it wasn't exactly an accident

[–]officeninja 2 points3 points ago

This is where I was born! I remember back in the early 80's my Aunts going to high school there. They used to have a pretty solid baseball program.

[–]Sanic_The_Sandraker 1 point2 points ago

I'm out in Robstown every few weeks to spend time with my Mexican family. As a joke, they've always called me, the little scrawny white kid, "Cyrus Flores Lopez Jr." so I fit in with them. May be my most favorite place in the world.

[–]SaViOrSeLpH 4 points5 points ago

Im from corpus and way to excited to see some one posting about a place i know.

[–]GameIsInTheName 1 point2 points ago

I was just about to say the same thing!

I feel like we should have some sort of celebration lol

[–]CaptAwesome5 1 point2 points ago

Good ole robstown. I used to live 9 miles away in the big city of Driscoll.

[–]lolitstim 2 points3 points ago

"How bout them Cotton Pickers?"

[–]hottiecakes 0 points1 point ago

Yep, my mom (and her 6 siblings) went there.

[–]DietCokeTin 0 points1 point ago

Apparently Robstown is where Texas Hold'Em originated. Also, Robstown ISD's football team sucks, but their baseball team is consistently a state championship contender.

[–]Amberdext 56 points57 points ago

I live in Central Illinois and we used to have the high school mascot called the Pekin Chinks. They have since been renamed the Pekin Dragons.

[–]me_the_great 17 points18 points ago

At Evergreen State College, we're the Geoducks (a giant clam which looks like the cock you wish you had). Siphon high, squirt it out! http://www.evergreen.edu/athletics/geoduck.htm

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Oh my god, there is no way that's real...ಠ_ಠ

[–]siromega 1 point2 points ago

I take it you never saw the episode of Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe harvests geoducks.

[–]ALWAYS_THRIVE 1 point2 points ago

Now that's a proper fight song. Never been more proud to have grown up down the road from that school.

[–]monkeybrigade 8 points9 points ago

Right near us are the Hoopston Cornjerkers. Brings a lovely image to mind...

[–]erksauce 1 point2 points ago

its even better cause they have hats that just say HA. haha.

http://www.cornjerkers.com/shop/

[–]davefromokinawa 8 points9 points ago

We also had a high school in my area called the East Orientals. I'm pretty sure "oriental" is now a derogatory term for Asians.

[–]itsSparkky 2 points3 points ago

That's the politically correct name in Western Canada.

[–]CanuckTux 2 points3 points ago

Aswell as south eastern canada.

[–]hoikarnage 4 points5 points ago

If it's derogatory, than why do half the stores in China Town have "Oriental" in the name?

[–]NitWit005 2 points3 points ago

The endless treadmill of political correctness. That old word is bad, use this new word. No, that word is bad, use this new one.

[–]arbivark 1 point2 points ago

that's like my native american friend who calls herself indian. PC terms have to do with liberals.

[–]tigerraaaaandy 1 point2 points ago

"American Indian" is actually preferred to "Native American" by the majority of people who identify that way, and has been been pretty well accepted as non-offensive nomenclature for a few decades

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]vonschnauser 19 points20 points ago

Using the term "Oriental" is like using the term "Negro." It's not exactly a racial slur, but it is a categorization of an extremely large and diverse group of people. They are also terms that hearken back to periods of segregation and marginalization of people who are not of European descent.

edit: spelling

[–]ponimaju 11 points12 points ago

damn is there a lot o' chinamen in japan

[–]rhubbit 4 points5 points ago

Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature

[–]unicornon 4 points5 points ago

Isn't it still used in the US to distinguish people from... well, the orient, as opposed to the Indian subcontinent and such?

[–]Rosalee 1 point2 points ago

Yes, exactly, as discussed by Columbia University's Edward Said in 'Orientalism' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwCOSkXR_Cw

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]vonschnauser 1 point2 points ago

[–]ahalenia 1 point2 points ago

I partied with those guys in a gay bar in San Francisco - great song - great band!

[–]SpacemanSpiffska 1 point2 points ago

I also live in central IL, my personal favorites (although not racist) are the Hoopeston Cornjerkers, or the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes (or Clogs, or something.. All I know is they have two giant wooden shoes painted on their soccer/football/track field)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

A school near me was the Cornhuskers.

[–]MtNoon 1 point2 points ago

I live in AZ and there's a high school named the Baghdad Sultans (yes, there is a city named Baghdad in AZ, although it might be spelled differently).

Although it's not same type of pejorative meaning, I think they could've done with a more common name that can fit anywhere.

[–]borkborkbork99 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, whenever Pekin played our high school, there was a guy that had a sign he'd hold up that read "Screw PeKKKin"

Decent hockey team back in the day though.

[–]ohpleaseno 0 points1 point ago

Hollis Grade School FTW

[–]crocoperson 0 points1 point ago

Hello fellow pekinite

[–]JonCantTweet 12 points13 points ago

Of course the one time I actually goto the comments to see if this was real or not..nothing! So like everything on the Internet I'll assume it's true

[–]Terramoura 11 points12 points ago

It's real. My high school used to play them in sports.

[–]ah1496 2 points3 points ago

ditto.

[–]j1mmie 50 points51 points ago

You know, people have the right to pick cotton these days. If you don't recognize that, you're the racist. It's a profession, just like Boilermakers, Engineers, Packers, etc, and we have the right to be proud of them.

[–]BoilerMaker11 17 points18 points ago

BOILERMAKERS!! WOOO!!! GO PURDUE!!!!

[–]tywebb 0 points1 point ago

Nebraska Corn Huskers.

But still, common sense says this mascot could use some cleaning up just to avoid unnecessary attention.

[–]Spider_Bacon 3 points4 points ago

"Keep your cotton picking hands to yourselves!" is what my mother would scream at my twin sister and I when we would hit eachother or bother eachother.

I was in 2nd grade when I screamed that at a kid who was stealing my crayons to color with. This kid was black. The teacher was mortified. She explained what it meant to me, and I was upset my mom would say such a thing.

Now I think it is funny.

[–]bibiane 1 point2 points ago

I never even thought about what that meant!

[–]arbivark 0 points1 point ago

same. my father was never overtly racist, although he was classist. but he did use "cotton-picking hands" as one of his many insults at us kids. born in texas and raised on a farm, before the flood of 35.

[–]Zeratur 4 points5 points ago

*Sees hometown on front page. Instant disappointment.

[–]qweswr2 0 points1 point ago

It took me waaaaaaaay too long to realize that was a penis.

[–]mini-you 3 points4 points ago

Looks like its Robstown High School in Texas

[–]RickRossovich 3 points4 points ago

Is that Robbstown, TX??

If not, they're the Cotton Pickers too!

[–]bandidobrent 4 points5 points ago

Is this in Robstown??

[–]Thirdyearfreshmen 0 points1 point ago

Yep.

[–]JKR93 62 points63 points ago

[–]I_make_it_awkward 10 points11 points ago

Hello, I'm Jamal. What a gorgeous day we're having!

[–]th1nker 4 points5 points ago

Can't tell if honest, or sarcastic.

[–]EpicJ 29 points30 points ago

Why is it racist? They had white and hispanic cotton pickers, it's kinda racist that we ignore the fact many eastern countries are using child labour to pick cotton yet we only think that black people should take offence to it

[–]depotman 80 points81 points ago

strap yourselves in, this is gonna be a long one

My name is Steve! Stop calling me that, guys!

[–]Timmyc62 9 points10 points ago

PEW PEW PEW

[–]specialvillain 6 points7 points ago

Yeah I kinda agree with this, it's probably an old school (pre 1940). At this time many people from different ethnicities shared the cotton field. My grandparents grew up in rural Georgia and picked cotton throughout their childhood sometimes missing half the school year to do so. Thats why people had so many children back then, more kids to work in the field.

[–]mini-you 18 points19 points ago

Do you think the school is referencing white, hispanic, or asian-child labor cotton pickers?

[–]g1zmo 5 points6 points ago

Absolutely. I think it's referencing the ancestors of the people in the school's rural community who, in the days before mechanized harvesters, used to pick cotton by hand in the fields. People like my (white) grandma who picked cotton on her family's farm from about age 5 until she got married. It was back-breaking work.

It's no different than Green Bay, WI calling their team the Packers, or Pittsburgh, PA calling their team the Steelers. It's simply a tribute to the people and industries that the communities were built around.

Are you really suggesting that the school chose the mascot in order to ridicule their African-American students?

[–]Jurf 13 points14 points ago

I don't think the schools referencing any race, as in the depiction there's no humans, only cotton.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]workpuppy 5 points6 points ago

I've picked cotton, tobacco, corn...And I'm white as a goddamn lily. Corn was by far the easiest. Cotton sucked, lotta bending over...like picking strawberries without pie at the end.

But the worst, the fucking worst was tobacco. Topping, bending and chopping, staking it out. And that fucking sap, it gets on your skin, and after a long day you start going off your fucking head from the fucking nicotine. It's like two packs a day through your fucking skin.

[–]Seel007 1 point2 points ago

I've picked corn and cotton never tobacco though. As a kid I hated having to shuck the corn after though. I absolutely despise pulling red rice and putting in rice spills.

[–]workpuppy 1 point2 points ago

I never shuck corn until after it's cooked anymore. Throw it on the grill, and it steams nice in the shuck, and all the stupid silk sticks to the shuck when you pull it off later.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]MyLoginName 0 points1 point ago

How?

[–]smeagul_like 4 points5 points ago

Well, we have professional teams called "Redskins" and "Indians." And towns that still have names like "Niggerhead." I would not be surprised if this is actually a real mascot.

[–]Creepyteacher 2 points3 points ago

Remember kids, it's only racism when it's against blacks.

[–]UltimaBuddy 2 points3 points ago

At some point, you run out of every type of badass animal and occupation.

[–]Hu_dat 2 points3 points ago

Back in california Compton highs mascot was the tarbabies for the longest time. I think they only just changed it recently.

[–]timoneer 0 points1 point ago

*tarbabe

Still is, and it has nothing to do with "tar baby"

[–]Scrapegrace 2 points3 points ago

I dunno, seems pretty similar to the Nebraska Corn Huskers.

[–]Footballvike81 2 points3 points ago

Ahh good old Texas. Nothing like playing Robstown in sports. Always funny seeing the white boys from there.

[–]CaptainObviousthe1st 2 points3 points ago

Can't tell if photo shopped or actually real.

[–]benjags 3 points4 points ago

Historically, cotton and vegetable farming have played an important role in Robstown's economy. The community will celebrate this heritage this year at COTTONFEST '2011

so not racist, just what a lot of people in the town do..

[–]LaunchPadMcQ 3 points4 points ago

The entire area of southern Texas is farming with the area surrounding Robstown being particularly well known for its cotton, corn, and barley fields. Growing up nearby, making a dollar a day picking cotton was still a common summer job for kids. I even think one of the major beer companies shot a commercial in one of the local fields when the barley was in.

Butte has a team called the pirates. http://cdn.9laughs.com/files/2012/02/4f198453cc7b01.jpg

[–]killedtheoldme 1 point2 points ago

i live near pekin illinois. their high school team is now the dragons, having been previously the chinks. i think the switch happened in the late 80s or early 90s.

[–]EasyChief 1 point2 points ago

A city near my college used have the mascot "The Chinks." They've now replaced it with the dragons, which is still kinda racist against chinks.

[–]rpfitz2 1 point2 points ago

This is a school in south Texas, (one of my schools rivals). They have a huge cotton field right next to their football field which is where their mascot came from.

[–]Jurf 1 point2 points ago

I went to a high-school who's mascot was the Crushers, in reference to grape-crushers in Napa. Similar I guess.

[–]SprinkleselknirpS 1 point2 points ago

OH MY GOSH. Weird. I was just on my way back with my family from picking up my aunt in this tiny town... and we passed by a school that said "Home of the Cotton Pickers."

[–]Larry_G 1 point2 points ago

I'm drunk.. I'm having a good time

[–]imagesandkeys 1 point2 points ago

My old high school mascot (Kaukauna High School in Wisconsin) was the Galloping Ghosts. So at football games, we'd have someone ride a horse out onto the field... wearing a sheet. There's even a statue. And the school's name begins with "K". Nothing racist about it anywhere, just a series of coincidences. I swear.

[–]people_call_me_fil 1 point2 points ago

I played against that school =) I never thought I'd recongnize anything on reddit lol

[–]Thirdyearfreshmen 1 point2 points ago

Is this in robstown Texas?

[–]medina5012 1 point2 points ago

Wow, Corpus should be proud of itself, it made it on reddit...damn...

[–]keepaustinugly 1 point2 points ago

Just wait until reddit discovers the comedy gold mine called Flour Bluff.

Here's me and my high school sweater: http://imgur.com/bmu4h They said it was okay because "no one was mad".

I thought all basketball teams consisted of cotton pickers.

EDIT: It's a joke, cry about it.

[–]Ooth 2 points3 points ago

At least the average gpa is higher than our rivals, south compton

[–]BlasticPeach 1 point2 points ago

It's the guy in the foreground, right?

[–]LuckyDuck77 0 points1 point ago

They had to set the bar somewhere.

[–]Lefty07 0 points1 point ago

wtf?!

[–]monkat 0 points1 point ago

Better than the Eagles.

My middle school was eagles, my first high school was eagles, my second high school was eagles, and my uni is the fucking eagles. Same colors too--always blue and silver/white.

[–]LittleSkittle 0 points1 point ago

It's brilliant, really, cause who would dare beat the Cotton Pickers in this day and age?

[–]rabbidpanda 0 points1 point ago

Also worth mentioning the Pekin, IL Chinks

[–]FestivalOfKites 0 points1 point ago

Wait a tick.... That kid could be the mascot!!!!

[–]killyridols12 0 points1 point ago

In all fairness, my grandma spent much of her youth picking cotton and she is white...

[–]tacosasquatch 0 points1 point ago

The mascot for Estherville, IA is the midget. I kid you not. My band teacher had a team shirt from there that said "Midget Wrestling." I've heard the girls' are known as the "midgettes."

[–]brianimal 0 points1 point ago

My high school's mascot was a "Galloping Ghost". Yes literally a ghost on a horse. My school was primarily white. Our rivals, (primarily black), were the Panthers.

[–]ah1496 0 points1 point ago

Robstown, TX

[–]CaptAwesome5 0 points1 point ago

Is this from Robstown, Tx?

[–]bayouekko 0 points1 point ago

[–]_white232 0 points1 point ago

I've always been a fan of the Orofino Maniacs, supposedly named after the Psych Ward in the same town.

[–]AndrewRK 0 points1 point ago

Who's the mascot? Eli Whitney? That was terrible. I'm sorry.

[–]Elakia 0 points1 point ago

This reminded me of a story about my middle school mascot: in a misguided attempt to teach us about democracy, the administrators decided to let us students name our cougar mascot. We controlled the nominating process as well as the final vote. So we named him "Freddie (the) Cougar," and even though we've left the school, they kept the name.

[–]RonaldFuckingPaul 0 points1 point ago

My first high school was "The Mighty Mountaineers" which wasn't so bad except the painting on the school gym wall was of a hill billy with a big ass beard, overalls with only one strap, a musket and a big jug of moonshine. This was in one of the "hill towns" outside of Troy, New York. The school had an outrageous drop out rate and the country had the highest rate of underage alcoholism in New York.

True story: when I was in Germany as an exchange student, I briefly had the nickname Baumwollpflücker (Cotton picker). It was a joke, and I'm generally okay with pseudo-racist stuff, but that was pushing it.
