Many of the world's greatest things came from "drug" users. For example, Steve Jobs smoked pot and did LSD. Inb4 people get mad because I'm talking about Apple.

[–]GargamelCuntSnarf 1 point2 points ago

It's unfortunate the level of misunderstanding even intelligent people will have about it and its use. It's an amazing chemical that deserves the utmost respect, especially from the biomedical & scientific communities, not to mention the intellectuals with whom it's already rather popular.

Also, the bullshit people who say they only do 'natural' drugs from the Earth; that mushrooms are more natural than lsd is pseudoscience gibberish. It pains me to have to point this out so consistently in /r/trees.

Fuck apple and it's business practice. But Steve Jobs was one of the best designers of the 20th (and probably 21st) century. Much love for the man.

Also, the universe can't really have a sense of irony...

Since we're the guts of the universe experiencing it and themselves subjectively, then could we not say that all senses and perceptions that any person's ever experienced can be attributed rightly to the universe?

[–]animalfruit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The popular image of the 60s is anti-drug propaganda. What psychedelics really gave us in the late 50s and 60s was modern science and technology as we know it. The age of global communication, inter-connectivity, and instant knowledge was inspired by LSD use within the scientific community.

I always think it's weird to think that those images we see are not "real." There is actual radiation leaving that area, but most of it is not visible light. All that is actually added after the photo is taking. Still amazing, but somewhat sad to know that humans will never actually "see" that.

What's even better is that of all the living organisms in the world, we are the best by far. and what are the odds of us being born human and not as a bee or a slug? also we're living in such an amazing age where we understand so much of the world and universe and technologies are around to make our lives longer, better and fuller. we're very lucky

Yes it is remarkable. I think that we evolved to have consciousness not only to benefit ourselves in the present, but I feel that human consciousness has very important implications for further human evolution. A significant expasion of our consciousness, for instance.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do you define best though? And isn't that basically the definition of chauvinism?

Do dolphins suffer teen depression and suicide epidemics? Do apes wage world wars? Do dogs and cats have to actually spend time figuring out how to live without polluting the planet until it's uninhabitable?

I think certain birds could be said to be better than humans in that they can both walk AND fly. I think salamanders could be said to be better than humans because they can regrow lost limbs. Frogs can breathe both on land and underwater. Monkeys can grab stuff with their hands, feet, AND tales, and all we've got is two hands. But most of all I just think it's silly to say any one species is objectively "better" than the others.

[–]the_bacon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We are capable of understanding complex systems and concepts, as well as having much superior social skills which benefit us by working for each other. Just by you understanding that we have problems and are not perfect displays how we are the most interlectual and know what we need to do to create a near perfect society. Could a monkey build a house? or create a computer that eliminates boring, repetitive tasks. Probably not. It's not about what we are doing now, it's about our potential that demonstrates how amazing we are.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't disagree that we're amazing. We are. But it just strikes me as silly to say that humans are "the best species" when the criteria are necessarily anthropocentric. It'd be like Black saying "I'm the best color because I absorb the most light." Well, right, but who says absorbing the most light makes a color the best? Only Black would say that.

[–]guidabida 2 points3 points ago

[–]Charli3q 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ehh. As an all around species I'd say the best. Teen depression and suicide epidemics are just a product of our society. And no so much a flaw of humans.

[–]HobKing 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude, please. To say that humans are the "best" species is completely meaningless.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But what are the criteria you're using to judge that we're the best? And why are they the criteria? We're certainly the best at having rich mental lives, but why is having a rich mental life better than having a hard shell to crawl into?

[–]ashraf2403 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because if we need to we can build a hard shell to live under, because we can create our environment to suit our needs.

[–]PancakeMonkeypants 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We're the "best" in the sense that we're the most advanced and refined. You're applying too many concepts that are more moral issues than an evolutionary standpoint. We're the pinnacle of Earth's evolutionary process for now. It's stupid you're being downvoted, though. Downvotes are for irrelevancy not for disagreements. This is /r/trees guys, we're better than that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But I don't see how even "most advanced" could translate into "best." Many fish, insects, birds, reptiles, and bacteria have been around, evolving, for eons longer than humans have. If complexity were required for them to be fit for their environments, they would likely be far more complex than we are. But they don't need complexity to thrive. So why should they be penalized for not having something they don't need? And I think it's just factually incorrect that humans are the most evolutionarily refined species. But evolutionary biologist ents will correct me if I'm mistaken, I'm sure.

[–]the_bacon 0 points1 point ago

I see your point, but name one thing that makes other animals better than us? other than living in the moment, which is what most people admire about animals but it's foresight that makes us able to prepare ourselves for whatever challenges we may face

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You seem to be missing my point. I think it's silly to say that one animal is objective better than all the others. Of course certain animals are better than others at running, swimming, flying, enduring really high or low temperatures, thinking, etc. But none of that equals "all around better" in my view. If there is a best then there would have to be degrees all the way down to "worst." What's the worst animal? Are armadillos better or worse than lemurs? It's all just kind of a silly endeavor.

Not ironic. The universe literally means everything in existence, so it is to be expected that if there are beings which have any experiences, than they could be described as [part of] the universe experiencing itself.

Mmm, ain't it funny... Enlightenment equals becoming one with the universe, it's a locked power within you, some say. Peace of mind. The path to enlightenment would then be finding yourself, I presume. Would make sense. But there's more to it, no? We're all part of the universe, all connected. All just thoughts -though more than thoughts- because first off: every person is different yet still part of the same unity (equality), and secondly: we live in awe of the stars yet the stars are within us. Full circle. So looking for enlightenment, to become one with the universe, is not just something personal, since we're all the universe. We, as in the collection of sentient beings, are the universe. It's not only out there, what we're looking for, it's also right here. Yeah that never made sense to me untill now. I need to ponder on this. Groovy

[–]howgoyoufar 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Think of it this way..the answers to the questions you're looking for will only be found in your own mind. Yet, the qualities that make the questions "spiritual" or "enlightened" are also created in your own mind.

We're all the same thing, experiencing itself and getting to know itself through these unique perspectives (our individual lives). We spend our entire lives developing the personal self, or "ego", so we identify with that instead, which is absolutely fine until one becomes interested in the deeper levels of existence. The deeper questions can only really be answered with the deeper parts of ourselves, past the ego and superficial qualities we create for ourselves.

[–]edgarallenbro 1 point2 points ago

The more advanced form of life that Neil Degrasse Tyson talks about is the collective human consciousness. From a higher viewpoint it acts as one. A chaotic mixture of radical thoughts that together form actions. The internet is a swift mutation. A strengthening of the connections between the various points of human consciousness. I leap in IQ. The internet is the verge of the human consciousness, itself, becoming conscious, with all of us a part of it.

I like this logic. My body is made up from organic matter my body created from food consisting of plants and animals that eat plants. Plants grow from the earth getting their food from the sun and nutrients in the soil. The soil is full of organic matter from other animals and plants decaying. Also, well, shit. Shit is food for plants and therefore food for us.

We do not and never will fully comprehend what has been said or will be said about the universe because it is forever growing (at a rate I do not know) and if we think we know what is going on out there we are trillions of years behind what has been just now seen or found out... Since when do astronauts surf? Or, since when do surfers wear spacesuits? wtf?

Yeah, amazing concept though- this makes me think of a Neil DeGrasse Tyson lecture I watched in which dude was asked what he thought was, like, the most amazing fact about the cosmos.

His reply? Pretty much this quote- that all the heavier elements (carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, etc) in our bodies were forged in the bowels of red giants that blew the fuck up and scattered their shit all over the galaxy and over eons they accreted into our little rock we call Earth and bam! presto, in the blink of a cosmic eye, here we are: the universe experiencing itself.

The universe is a cool place to live. peace, -some guy named mike from the internet

Someone posted just this picture a while back, which I took for my desktop background. I'd be lying if I didn't say I've stared at more than a few times after a solo sesh.

Something that bothers me about it is that there is a shadow from the Astro-Surfer coming from the red light source but not from the blue.

Unfortunately when you say things like that, people will say that it is by chance and that it could have happened and failed a billion times before it got to where we are now. But I agree brap.

The first bit about there being more cells in our eyes than stars in the galaxy may be true, but it's not all that incredible.

There are more crumbs between the couch cushions than there are cookies in the entire jar. But each of those crumbs once came from a cookie that esploded.

The rest is pretty fucking cool though, up until that last part about us only being thoughts. That's a pretty bold claim and Anonymous doesn't do much to back it up.

[–]ACMMVU 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well there actually is a lot of information backing up that statement about thoughts, its a way of perceiving life thats referred to as the "Law Of One" multiple sources all worth checking out

[–]HobKing 1 point2 points ago

It's all easily verifiable; try wikipedia or googling the facts. I just looked up the 100 trillion atoms per cell figure and found that it was a common estimate.

As for the atoms being formed in stars, that's just what happens in stars. Fusion occurs at the center of stars; lighter atoms are fused into heavier ones. Essentially, all atoms that are not hydrogen are the products of stellar fusion. That's standard star info, you can check that out on wikipedia, too. Pretty much everything here is widely accepted to be the case.

Obviously, "All you are is a thought," is BS, but I don't think you were expecting to ever find a source for that anyways.

[–]Wreckus 0 points1 point ago

"You" in that case is the internal you, the voice that talks to itself within your own head.

It's an emergent property of the massively complex network of neurons that is your brain.

Issues:

1) this has nothing to do with trees

2) this could have been a selfpost instead of a picture with text in it
