From what I can tell it is that kind of leaf. The one Totoro uses is called Fuki in Japanese and they grow to be giant on Hokkaido, the northern island. I just visited there and took a picture with one :)

Oh awesome! I spent the most time in Osaka, because that's where my family is, but I would recommend taking a weekend (or more) to try and visit Hokkaido before you have to go. Most Japanese people don't go there, and it is beautiful and mountainous.

I actually only went to Tokyo for the first time this trip, all other times I've visited it's been to Osaka, and Sapporo areas.

Pretty safe bet it does, especially on a leaf that large. They have shaped stems so that water doesn't pool in them, but water, runs down the stem and over his shoulder.

it looks like the leaf of an elephant ear plant (used to make taro) they dont usually get that large in gardens but the shape looks correct and in a tropical country on a farm they could get that big

It doesn't pool in it (that much), the leaf is shaped to lead water towards the stalk so it will basically drip down around his right arm.
