Commuters disembark from crowded suburban trains during the morning rush hour at Churchgate railway station on World Population Day in Mumbai July 11.

The dog didn't budge :)

[–]praisecarcinoma 0 points1 point ago

And thankfully no one trampled it!

[–]megaman78978 2 points3 points ago

In India, stray dogs are found almost everywhere. Nobody even gives a second thought about stray dogs. We just co-exist.

[–]mctesh 6 points7 points ago

Great picture. I'm assuming this is composed of two shots, one with a fast shutter speed to capture those on the folks on the benches, and the one with the dragged shutter to capture the movement of those walking, and then a mask was used? It's hard to believe that those on the bench remained perfectly still during the long shutter actuation. Either way, I love it!

[–]Cornelius_Talmadge 4 points5 points ago

I think there are so many people moving so fast that the people on the bench aren't sitting there for that long. Just one shot with the shutter open for a second or two.

[–]thedude85 2 points3 points ago

I agree. The people in the middle are slightly blurred suggesting some movement. It's still an amazing capture though, probably took several shots to get the correct effect. I definitely want to try to recreate this.

[–]hinduguru 28 points29 points ago

World Population Day

Mumbai is right place to celebrate this. Us Indians populate too much

[–]sproosemoose799 3 points4 points ago

For a second there I thought you were saying U.S. Indians populate too much.

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 14 points15 points ago

Not anymore ಥ◡ಥ

[–]econleech 5 points6 points ago

You are not going to get women pregnant doing it that way.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 1 point2 points ago

Probably, but the main reason is like in the UK, the Indian government only cares about a few cities. So you get overcrowded metropolises. Ideally you shouldn't be getting people from across the entire country immigrating to a handful of cities. There should be cities nearby that are good enough, but nope, everyone comes to London. Or for India, Mumbai/Delhi. I'd say it's worse in India than the UK though, definitely.

Especially because Mumbai is a tiny city size wise (compared to other cities in the world) with a massive population.

[–]TejasaK 3 points4 points ago

the indian govt doesnt give a shit about mumbai

[–]it_says_no_homers 0 points1 point ago

How can you prolong the shutter speed like that without over-exposing the picture?

[–]s_nut_zipper 2 points3 points ago

[–]it_says_no_homers 0 points1 point ago

Perfect, thanks!

[–]loki010[S] 1 point2 points ago

Reducing the aperture might help.

http://olsonfarlow.com/blog/exhibits/story-behind-an-unpublished-photo

The photographer had to describe frame by frame the composition and settings he wanted to a runner, because the bureaucrat whose office he shot it from wouldn't let a non-Indian in his space.

The more you know!

[–]captabs 25 points26 points ago

"If you are late for work in the morning in Mumbai, and you reach the station just as the train is leaving the platform, you can run up to the packed compartments and find many hands stretching out to grab you on board, unfolding outwards from the train like petals. As you run alongside the train, you will be picked up and some tiny space will be made for your feet on the edge of the open doorway. The rest is up to you. You will probably have to hang on to the door frame with your fingertips, being careful not to lean out too far lest you get decapitated by a pole placed too close to the tracks. But consider what has happened. Your fellow passengers, already packed tighter than cattle are legally allowed to be, their shirts already drenched in sweat in the badly ventilated compartment, having stood like this for hours, retain an empathy for you, know that your boss might yell at you or cut your pay if you miss this train, and will make space where none exists to take one more person with them. And at the moment of contact, they do not know if the hand that is reaching for theirs belong to a Hindu or Muslim or Christian or Brahmin or untouchable or whether you were born in this city or arrived only this morning or whether you’re from Malabar Hill or New York or Jogeshwari. All they know is that you’re trying to get to the city of gold, and that’s enough. Come on board, they say. We’ll adjust." - Suketu Mehta ...as a Mumbaikar ,I approve !

[–]zomglings 5 points6 points ago

That is beautifully written.

[–]zogworth 3 points4 points ago

It is an extact from Shantaram, which is a well written if self serving fictionish biography of a chap who escaped prison in Australia and ran to mumbai

[–]zomglings 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the information! The book looks worth a read.

[–]absurdonihilist 0 points1 point ago

Too poetic but not entirely correct. I have been pulled up by commuters in the morning when I tried to catch the moving train, however, try getting into those over-crowded trains in the evening. People won't let you in unless you really push hard.

[–]WimzicalStranger 115 points116 points ago

Wow, people in other countries are weird, wavy lines... I had no idea...

[–]hinduguru 67 points68 points ago

[–]brownwog 16 points17 points ago

That is Reay Road station in Mumbai. Would you be surprised if I told you that 3700 people die in railway accidents in Mumbai every year?

[–]bombachak 6 points7 points ago

3700??? Isn't that too much? Source please?

[–]Neonic84 16 points17 points ago

It's true. 10 deaths a day.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mumbai_Suburban_Railway Safety Issues section

[–]acog 13 points14 points ago

Here's a link to the normal (non-mobile) version of that article that goes right to the fatalities section.

[–]snark_nerd 7 points8 points ago

I (almost) refuse to believe that. I have no deep knowledge of Mumbai, but when I was there in April, there were two accidents (a fire and a hanger-on who was hit by a rail-side piece of equipment) resulting in three or four deaths, and they were much-publicized in the news. I can't imagine that there were hundreds more that were going unreported that week.

Edit: saw evidence of the 3700 number elsewhere in the comments. I stand corrected. Wow.

[–]FriendlyTrolling 2 points3 points ago

Most of the people who die are the ones who fall on the track or get drunk and sleep on the tracks at nights. Mumbai Railways have hired people who wander in the dark and remove the drunk people from the tracks at night. Without them the number would be much higher.

[–]glorydog 4 points5 points ago

How drunk do you have to be to decide that two metal rails would make a comfortable place to sleep?

[–]FriendlyTrolling 1 point2 points ago

I guess you could blame the whiskey and beer you get from the local breweries. They are pretty strong. I'll bring it along on my next trip, you could judge yourself.

[–]zogworth 1 point2 points ago

People farm crops between the rails as one of the few available.spaces to grow anything. Any other green space is for cricket.

[–]VM-AP 2 points3 points ago

What you have to understand is that the lack of security and the "overcrowdedness" of transportation methods, mean that a small car crash will kill 10 people. It's actually quite strange...

Source: I lived there for a while

[–]Neonic84 0 points1 point ago

Train deaths are hardly ever reported widely. It's par for the course.

[–]snark_nerd 0 points1 point ago

I would figure that that's the case - it's certainly true here in NYC, where I live - the media agrees not to publicize jumpers, for instance, out of fear of encouraging it; however, my point was that at least some deaths are in fact publicized, which makes me skeptical that so many more (orders of magnitude more) are not. I don't know; I think we're both speculating.

[–]Neonic84 0 points1 point ago

Im not speculating. Im a resident of the city. You can see the stats. The wiki link I posted confirms the 3,700 number.

And you would be kind to the media and the people of the city if you thought it was because of any good motives that the deaths are not publicised. Im speculating now, but its because of sheer apathy and an attitude of always "moving on with business". This "mumbai spirit" is apparently the reason we always bounce back a couple of hours or latest the next day of every terrorist attack we have seen.

[–]brownwog 0 points1 point ago

Glad you asked! Here you go.

[–]vjfalk 0 points1 point ago

They announce at the stations not to climb on top of the trains here in Mumbai.

[–]exo48 0 points1 point ago

It always bugs me when people (mainly young men) feel the need to touch/slam everything. This takes it to an extreme.

[–]dsrviper1 0 points1 point ago

Trippy as FUCK.

[–]ForTheEmpire 0 points1 point ago

[–]kjoeleskapet 0 points1 point ago

It comforts me a little to know that if someone tried that in my country, they'd be promptly arrested.

[–]WimzicalStranger 8 points9 points ago

I keep running into you. It's creepy.

[–]hinduguru 4 points5 points ago

TiR's newest scare

[–]TheSecretMe 22 points23 points ago

Is that a composited photograph or are those people moving so fast that the photographer found a shutter time that gave him a nice blur while leaving the seated people in focus?

[–]cheeseman1957 6 points7 points ago

Other than post-processing, there are multiple ways to do the shot:

One technique would be to focus on the people on the bench use a neutral density filter (it is essentially a transparent gray filter that you put in front of the lens). It would make the frame much darker. In turn, the shutter speed would be showed down, and you'd achieve a blur after compensating for the darkness by a longer exposure.

The other ways would be decreasing the ISO (longer exposure) or by having a smaller apature (also a longer exposure).

[–]trakam 5 points6 points ago

You mean decreasing the ISO, increasing the ISO allows for shorter exposures. This picture has been shopped, never mind the pixels nobody sits perfectly still for that long. Still, nice pic.

[–]aumanchi 3 points4 points ago

I don't believe it's shopped, it seems as if everyone has only moved 3ish feet. There are also 'blur' lines on where the people sitting down have moved a tad. I'd say it's on a 3-4 second shutter delay.

[–]m0nkeybl1tz 2 points3 points ago

Hm, I was skeptical before but you might be right. The photographer probably just took multiple shots, and this was the least blurry.

[–]HaMMeReD 0 points1 point ago

It's shopped, there is clones of people, there is multiple exposures, probably about 10-15 blended together. It's probably shot with a burst-fire mode and a lower-shutter speed to give some trails. You can see repeated outlines of the same people, which indicates it's multiple exposures and composited.

[–]UghImRegistered 0 points1 point ago

There is absolutely zero chance that the subjects on benches are from an unedited 3+ second exposure.

[–]TheSecretMe 3 points4 points ago

I understand how to make a long exposure. Those people in the center look far too dynamic to stay sharp during a long exposure though. Which is why I'm wondering if it's a composite photograph.

[–]crackanape 0 points1 point ago

It's pretty hot there. People are very good at remaining languidly immobile.

[–]Brunous 3 points4 points ago

I had the same question

Population of Mumbai will cross 20million in few years ,more than population of continent of Australia put together...& these are the trains which help those 20million earn bread n butter every single day......This is lifeline of this vast metropolis ...its crowded ,its impossible to travel in such environment...but Mumbaikars have no choice ...inspite of terror attacks-Religious Riots-Crumbling Infrastructure-increasing crowd- unaffordable rent but still people are able to put smile on thier face & move on ..Haters may hate it,but for us, no other city can beat it...this is my place ,this is 'Amchi' Mumbai :D..

[–]captabs 1 point2 points ago

haha...yes man unfortunately thats true to some extent...cannot agree completely but also cannot disagree ....god save India with kind of population growth we have !

[–]zingbat 0 points1 point ago

Its not necessarily population growth, because that is projected to peak soon and then eventually fall. The problem is rural to urban migration. Everyone wants to move to the cities because of economic opportunities.

[–]ssjumper 1 point2 points ago

I upvoted you because I don't want to see you in negatives but lol, pune.

I did not have a great experience in Mumbai as an American on business. Bangalore, however, was amazing. I'd always choose Bangalore as a destination in India over Mumbai.

[–]vjfalk 1 point2 points ago

I live in Mumbai, and I agree with you.

As a visiting American, I found Bangalore excellent as well.

Reminds me of this beautiful photograph from Sebastião Salgado. I think this image was from his Migrations book. India too, I believe.

Edit: turns out, it is Mumbia: "Churchgate Station, Mumbai, India, 1995"

[–]g33kg0d 1 point2 points ago

Oh wow that sends me back. recognized the Wills board hanging. Churchgate and VT were the only two stations that had those signs hanging.

[–]elquesogrande 5 points6 points ago

I rode this train back into Mumbai - arriving at 5:15PM when work had just let off for most of the city. The train was mostly empty and I was standing right at the exit when a Sikh businessman grabbed my shoulder.

"You might want to do like me."

He stood with his back to the wall while facing the back of the train. His suitcase in one hand and his other hand protecting his genitalia. He was serious. I kind of shrugged, stepped away from the open air of the exit (no door) and followed suit just as the train pulled into the station.

BOOM!

We were still going 15+ MPH when the first commuter flung himself from the platform - slamming into the wall opposite from us and then scrambling for an empty seat. A second later it was 5, the next second 20+ businessmen taking running leaps from the platform, slamming into the wall, clawing past each other and then diving for seats. It was a vivid, violent event that eventually turned into a heaving scrum as the train stopped.

The Sikh had saved me from being hit and trampled by flying Mumbi businessmen who were willing to risk their lives in pursuit of a good seat. He was laughing non-stop as I tucked in behind him to find a way off the train and out of the pile of people pushing onboard.

First and only time I've followed a crotch-grabbing stranger's sagely advice.

[–]PessimistPrime 28 points29 points ago

These trains are packed to such an extent that you feel several people breathing down your neck. Getting off your station involves pushing/shoving the person in front of you. No etiquettes are followed. No one forms lines to get on the train either.

And the whole journey smells of gutters and poo.

[–]6times9is42 13 points14 points ago

If you are too close the the exit a the wrong time you're definitely leaving the train. The crowd will carry you out - no two ways about it.

The Delhi Metros are much cleaner, though just as crowded in rush hour.

[–]captabs 1 point2 points ago

there cannot be any comparision between Delhi Metros & Mumbai Locals....Population of Mumbai is too huge when compared to avialable land...Mumbai is Island City with its own limitations ,Delhi is not ......Delhi is Capital of India ,it has built metro for itself ,but havnt shown same enthusiasm for doing something for India's commercial capital...

[–]monkeyduke 19 points20 points ago

I recently return(ed) back to Mumbai after many years and I approve of this message.

EDIT: grammar

[–]the-vicious-one 3 points4 points ago

I live in Mumbai. Lived here my whole life. I approve.

Edit: as far as etiquettes, they are the same as anywhere else. I dont suppose people board trains, in a queue, in london/NY subways... There are just more people in Mumbai and an infrastructure that can barely sustain.

[–]monkeyduke 2 points3 points ago

Having lived overseas for a fair bit, I can honestly say, things are more civil and less "gropey" elsewhere.

However I do agree on the population being the source of the problem. We need nationally broadcast PSA's on the value of pulling out and blowjobs finishes

[–]superkidney 1 point2 points ago

Are you insinuating that people in England don't know how to queue?

[–]Neonic84 4 points5 points ago

That's what you get when 8 million people a day use the system!

[–]spanglish14 11 points12 points ago

Nah, it's just so hot there that the people are evaporating

[–]RichSnitch 11 points12 points ago

I thought this was going to be a set photo from a new Rush Hour movie.

[–]sakamake 12 points13 points ago

It is; the blurs are all Jackie Chan.

[–]madnessAndYou 11 points12 points ago

And this ladies and gentlemen is where the December 2008 terrorist attack took place. 3 people opening automatics on a crowd like that.

edit:Whops, this picture is of the sister station to the one that was attacked. Sry!

[–]drunkTurtle12 5 points6 points ago

This is where the terrorist attack actually took place CST Station . Its even bigger and equally crowded.

[–]WEAREGOINGTOIBIZA 0 points1 point ago

Well not every where is as crowded. Here lots of people are fitting into a tiny place to catch the train at rush hour.

[–]bagpipesmusic 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't it actually at the CST, and not at Churchgate?

[–]madnessAndYou 0 points1 point ago

oh my bad. Should update.

I'm from Bombay, let me tell you, experiencing Indian rush hour (both train and traffic)...you don't know whether you'll live to see another sunrise haha. Glad I got the hell outta Dodge :-P

[–]sceptic_ali 0 points1 point ago

did you live in dodge [kansas] after you left bombay?

[–]sps26 0 points1 point ago

I would rather take my chances back in India than go to Kansas, no offense haha. Nah, I'm up in good old NY. The state mind you, not the city

[–]sceptic_ali 0 points1 point ago

i am familiar with the term "get out of doge" , my query was in jest. i guess i need to improve my delivery, or restrict myself to humor which is funny. :))

[–]witoldc 7 points8 points ago

For people talking about Delhi metro:

I've used Delhi metro quite a bit and it is nicer than ANY metro in the USA I have used.

It's gigantic and brand new. They even have outlet jacks so you can charge your phone or use your laptop. It's mostly semi-empty. I never made the point of riding it during rush hour, but DC and NYC metros are much more crowded.

India is a place where you have 3rd World right next to futiristic version of 1st world. No one ever takes the pictures of the gorgeous new stuff, though... Instead, people take pics of the old stuff making India look completely backwards.

[–]WEAREGOINGTOIBIZA 2 points3 points ago

I don't want to see what can be more crowded than the Delhi metro at rush hour. The AC is nice though.

[–]NaeblisEcho 2 points3 points ago

I travel via Delhi Metro during rush hour everyday, and it's not a pleasant experience. I literally have to struggle to breathe sometimes. Haven't traveled in any other place so I can't compare.

But yeah, when it's not crowded, it's awesome. <3

[–]vjfalk 2 points3 points ago

Actually you'll find all the first world stuff only in certain places in certain cities, 80% of India is still old stuff.

[–]mopimopi 0 points1 point ago

Mumbai has its nice side too.

[–]inhousegeek 3 points4 points ago

Mumbai local trains and the railway stations are something one must experience if visiting the great city.
It is fun to compare the NYC Subway to Mumbai Suburban Railway.

NYC Subway -- 468 Stations over 209 miles, 5.2 million daily riders.

Mumbai -- 136 Stations over 265 miles, 7.2 million daily riders.

Thank you

[–]El_Impresionante 1 point2 points ago

[FIXED] Now with 1700% more people.

You really don't need the blur to showcase the rush hour in Mumbai.

[–]Neandarthal 1 point2 points ago

Mumbai local transit system amazes every metro railway engineer in the world. 7.5 million people commute everyday and there is hardly any delay. Just like the dabbahwaalas, the Mumbai metro is a management feat.

[–]Waff1es 1 point2 points ago

Was I the only one who felt there was a lack of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker

[–]etrast75 1 point2 points ago

Mumbai is one place like new york that evokes strong responses for and against it. People born, brought up and living in mumbai will swear that it is the greatest city in the world. People looking in from outside will wonder how people can live in such a crowded and expensive place.
Mumbai has its own set of rules that you will not find anywhere else. The city and its people are resilient having survived through multiple terrorist attacks, crumbling and non existent infrastructure and an apathetic and corrupt administration. But their spirit to make a living in the face all difficulties thrown at them is seen to be believed.
You either love mumbai or hate mumbai. There is nothing in between.

[–]HaMMeReD 1 point2 points ago

That looks like multiple exposures blended together, with a single exposure being used for people on the bench, as opposed to a really long exposure at a high f-stop with a ND filter.

Only reason I mention is because people don't really have trails so much as lots and lots of clones.

The people on the bench are sharp because it's composing the people from just one of the many snaps.

[–]dengshanshui 0 points1 point ago

wow, that's a great shot at slow shutter; what level ND filter did you have to use for it?

[–]ory_hara 0 points1 point ago

[–]unknown_poo 0 points1 point ago

Dammit I thought this was about a new Rush Hour movie.

[–]Chalup 0 points1 point ago

Where's shitty_watercolour when you need him?

Edit: Further down the page, it seems.

[–]ravergames 0 points1 point ago

Could you upload the RAW file?

[–]phditto 0 points1 point ago

Look at those lazy asses..hoggin up all the benches and whatnot.

[–]blessedrain 0 points1 point ago

You gotta wonder how long the people were sitting there to be still in that picture...

[–]fantasma925 0 points1 point ago

Mumbai has a lot of ghosts?!

[–]InkBubble 0 points1 point ago

How does someone make a shot like this? I've seen a lot of photos like this, but it has always puzzled me.

[–]DuduMaroja 1 point2 points ago

long exposition with a low iso ( 100, 64 ) a the smallest aperture your lens is capable, lets say f.22 and a few seconds of exposure

[–]InkBubble 0 points1 point ago

Thank you.

[–]WEAREGOINGTOIBIZA 0 points1 point ago

Heisenberg would be proud.

[–]bbrantome 0 points1 point ago

I thought that this would be a Rush concert in Mumbai.

[–]Morbidgrass 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of that video where the dude gets on the roof and has the shit shocked out of him.

[–]parrywinks 0 points1 point ago

Apparently the train stations in Mumbai are filled with ghosts

[–]Desolator001 0 points1 point ago

The people in the middle kept that pose for a whole hour? Holy shit.

[–]JesusVonChrist 0 points1 point ago

My first time in Mumbai it took me one cigarette to cross four lane road on pedestrian crossing (got stuck in the middle). In the meantime I was almost hit by few three-wheeled taxis and one idiot in white jeep cherokee.

Great city though.

[–]Wellseen 0 points1 point ago

nice one

[–]HopskotchB 0 points1 point ago

Ah ghosts!

[–]Shelbolovesnate 0 points1 point ago

Aww there's a dog

[–]Rosezenaa 0 points1 point ago

Any one see the dog?

[–]strayadvice 0 points1 point ago

Umm, only that motion blur makes it look like rush hour. Looks pretty non-rush hour otherwise - no people hanging out the doors, seats not completely occupied, ...

[–]pheck5 0 points1 point ago

There's only 9 people, must be nice

[–]Moegain 0 points1 point ago

I'm suprised no one has posted the Shibuya station.

[–]alecyo12 0 points1 point ago

Reminded me of spirited away for some strange reason

[–]Tanory07 0 points1 point ago

The people in the middle look scared

[–]pinkylemonade 0 points1 point ago

river of souls.

[–]icalledshotgun 0 points1 point ago

Was hoping for Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in Mumbai... Highly disappointed.

[–]Moikle 0 points1 point ago

TIL everyone in Mumbai is the Flash

[–]SirBonkerton 0 points1 point ago

Dam that jackie chan is fast!

[–]werty1847 0 points1 point ago

Reddit hits 2 million nbd..thats the number of people who can fit in this very railway station.

[–]Eyecantsee 0 points1 point ago

I'm assuming people move so fast in mumbai they just blur any picture they're in?

[–]devilcraft 0 points1 point ago

They sure have many vampires in Mumbai.

[–]birdlips 0 points1 point ago

Wow, this is absolutely incredible. Never seen a soft shot applied to humans, nicely done!

[–]brewmeister58 0 points1 point ago

How long was this exposure? The people sitting have almost no blur to them. Those people walking are moving pretty damn quick.

[–]franger88 0 points1 point ago

I love how the dog is just chillin.

[–]franger88 1 point2 points ago

Lets hope not...

[–]jaaf9098 0 points1 point ago

love it. seems a simple shot but you have to plan it and then do it, have you?

[–]afrogabe 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a school of fish.

[–]AiKantSpel 0 points1 point ago

That lens is straight Tralfmadorian.

[–]kyle47 0 points1 point ago

Not many people know this, but Flash is actually from Mumbai.

[–]Iron_Maiden_666 0 points1 point ago

Flash as in Starcraft Flash?

[–]kyle47 1 point2 points ago

No, Flash as in superhero Flash

[–]Iron_Maiden_666 0 points1 point ago

Ahhh did not know. Thanks.

[–]m1lgram 0 points1 point ago
