Except the ability to carry this lot in your bag.

[–][deleted] 233 points234 points ago

I don't get why people try to play down technology like OP did. I love a good library, I love the quiet and the resources... but, It doesn't compare to the convenience and practicality of a Kindle though.

[–]darkscout 94 points95 points ago

It doesn't compare to the convenience and practicality of a Kindle generic e-reader of your choice though.

I bought my GF a Nook for christmas. I wasn't entirely convinced when she first got it that she'd use it or that it'd really live up to the "hype". (I had also never actually seen eInk before).

Personally I think this is as much of a game changer as the Gutenberg press. With a large SD card you could store the entirety of books ever written and translated into every language known. It lasts for a few weeks on a charge and it could easily be charged by a trickle Solar panel. I child in Africa could hold in their hands the library of congress's literature section.

The text reflows great. You can make the font as large or small as you want.

[–]furshizzle 38 points39 points ago

Agree 100%. I don't really understand people's attachment to the ancient technology of the printed page, but within a generation books will go the way of all obsolete technologies. I suppose there will be 'book' stores like there are 'record' stores now - places for hipsters to congregate and bemoan the death of paper/vinyl, etc.

[–]taoistextremist 24 points25 points ago

No, no, book stores will always be prominent because they can be used to pretty up your house and make you look intelligent and refined.

[–]Kazumara 19 points20 points ago

Fuck that, I'll just have bookshelfs full of kindles, nooks, ipads and android tablets. (I just need to figure out the best way to earn millions first.)

[–]krakentastic 17 points18 points ago

one book per device...

[–]stesch 17 points18 points ago

Just like Star Trek. :-)

[–]ChaoticAgenda 22 points23 points ago

It's the typical human response of "my generation was better than your generation because it was mine".

TL;DR egocentricism

[–]Winterclaw 11 points12 points ago

Pretty sure if someone is too lazy to read a single line of text while browsing the comments then they're not going to know the word 'egocentricism.'

[–]8bitAntelope 1 point2 points ago

Well hang on now... I don't dislike the kindle because I think I'm better. In fact, I don't really dislike it at all. It's great technology, but personally, I would much rather have a book in my hands or a few in my bag, every time. I don't want one, I don't have any desire to own one.

The thing I hate is when people who own kindles find our that I don't personally want to own one, and they go on and on about how much better it is than a book, and I'm just a technology hater hipster, and can my book do this? Or this? Or how about this?

There are pros and cons to both. I prefer books. I hate kindle snobs. And I also hate book snobs (The outspoken ones, anyways... I can't deny a tiny hint of closet book snob in me. I just love them way too much.) Everyone should just have their opinions and shut up about them.

[–]ColinWhitepaw 1 point2 points ago

I doubt the printed word will move out of vogue entirely. We may shift to ultrathin computers bound together that mimics the look of a book, but for ease of manufacture and low-key distribution of information, books are a tough case to beat.

[–]plus_EV 1 point2 points ago

Assuming everyone has a device to read ebooks (i.e any phone/computer/tablet/kindle) ebooks are much easier to manufacture and distribute.

[–]agnotastic 1 point2 points ago

E Ink Holdings is actually a really cool company. Met some of their people at an education technology conference a couple weeks ago. Some of the things they are producing are awesome!

Color ePaper

[–]FuckYoureShit 1 point2 points ago

If you put constant internet access with an online library in the thing, then you wont even need the memory card.

[–]stratamartin 14 points15 points ago

You may scoff at this, but the reason I prefer a kindle is because I absolutely detest the feel of pages in books. Oh and obviously the practicality etc.

[–]furshizzle 24 points25 points ago

For me it's not the feel of the pages, but just the inconvenience of holding a book open, turning pages, etc. (particularly for large/heavy books).

Since getting my first Kindle 5 or 6 years ago I've grown increasingly annoyed with physical books and avoid them whenever possible. They are a vastly inferior and outdated technology.

[–]BloodFeces 8 points9 points ago

I agree completely! In fact I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I always felt that the physical book was a pain in the ass I had to deal with in order to read a good story.

[–]djc393 5 points6 points ago

I know exactly what you mean. I need to get me a kindle.

[–]librarianzrock 2 points3 points ago

Exactly (librarian here). People get too attached to the "romance" of the library without understanding the real value of an organized, managed, and professionally vetted collection of information. A library isn't just a big room full of books - technology is why most librarians never have to worry about becoming obsolete - we just keep getting better about organizing the shit out of stuff and making it more accessible to the public, for free (e.g. librarians are currently fighting major publishers to make eBooks available for borrowing).

[–]BoredandIrritable 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention that if you have a relatively modern e-reader of any kind you can literally have each and every one of those books on your device, and the text of each will be searchable. Oh, and nobody ever has your book checked out.

[–]tits_hemingway 1 point2 points ago

My pre-Kindle vacation reading material was about ten books, which take up a shit load of luggage space, and I often ran out. My post-Kindle vacation reading is however many books I want and it fits in the pocket of my carry on.

[–]imperial_empire 2 points3 points ago

Yep! I alternate. I'm an English major, so I buy copies of books for class at the bookstore, and purchase ebooks when I read recreationally.

[–]Ceejae 1 point2 points ago

People just like being hipsters.

[–]caseyvill 1 point2 points ago

And since all the books in this library are off limits to the public because of there age and worth, a kindle would allow anyone to read these books.

[–]cheeto44 3 points4 points ago

I wouldn't need to carry a Kindle if they would let me just live there. And I would definitely love living there.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Wouldn't it be annoying to have your home full of people every day?

[–]vernors 197 points198 points ago

Also this is in Dublin and my Kindle is about three feet away.

[–]GoddessOfGoodness 40 points41 points ago

I was in Trinity yesterday with my Kindle in my bag. It's much easier to carry after all.

[–]tdn 89 points90 points ago

As soon as I switched from carrying Trinity library everywhere with me to the Kindle, my back pain miraculously disappeared.

[–]GoddessOfGoodness 42 points43 points ago

"I was reluctant to switch at first, I'm a bit of a traditionalist, but when my doctor told me there was a cheap, easy alternative to carrying a major architectural landmark around on my back I was just so intrigued I had to try it out. Now I don't know how I ever lived without it, Thank you Amazon" <smiles for camera>

9 out of 10 doctors would recommend the Amazon Kindle when compared to carrying around buildings full of books.

Nothing really matters, Anyone can see, Nothing really matters, Nothing really matters to me...

Anyway the wind blows...

[–]ArJooDeJew 3 points4 points ago

You should've just pulled it out, waved it in the air and said "FUCK YOU, BOOKS." Then walked out.

[–]GoddessOfGoodness 3 points4 points ago

or just sat down and started reading it very lovingly in full view of all those books. Let them know there's a new reading device in my life now.

[–]ArJooDeJew 4 points5 points ago

While I appreciate your use of quiet understatement, I prefer my random outbursts to be as annoying and obnoxious as possible.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

[–]justAnotherNutzy 1 point2 points ago

Library - you mean the ones with books being read by people ??

This looks more like a cemetery, instead of books, you have urns, that are rarely ever touched by anyone.

[–]skeetskeetskeetskeet 51 points52 points ago

they copied this library for the Star Wars films

[–]Cannon84 43 points44 points ago

[–]it2d 8 points9 points ago

Those aren't books on the shelves, so what the fuck are they? And how is that possibly the most efficient way to store them, whatever they are?

[–]upvoterss 5 points6 points ago

have you ever seen a server room?

[–]Titanosaurus 8 points9 points ago

So what you're trying to say is, the Jedi Archives has the A/C running all day and all night?

[–]upvoterss 6 points7 points ago

the blue stacks are computer parts cooled by a special gas that makes them glow blue.

[–]Nieros 4 points5 points ago

god, that still shot just shows how badly those movies are going to age.

[–]Cannon84 10 points11 points ago

Don't worry, I'm sure George is up for another round of remastering.

[–]Nieros 2 points3 points ago

Episode I: Remastered, using revolutionary new techniques including modeling and real sets!

[–]alexthehoopy 3 points4 points ago

And a real script!

[–]ManOfStealthAndTaste 1 point2 points ago

I opened it to get a better look, and had myself convinced it was a still from a game until I read this.

[–]Tommer_man 1 point2 points ago

This was my first thought

[–]soulblow 126 points127 points ago

Yeah!

Take that you stupid device that encourages reading by making it extremely portable and accessible!

[–]megret 28 points29 points ago

Seriously, I read so much more now than when I was in the anti-Kindle club. And that app that syncs to your phone is the best! I work in a hotel and I can just hide out in a back stairway, whip out my phone and start right in where I left off.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of people who bash on e-book readers don't actually read a whole lot of books themselves.

[–]aku42 1 point2 points ago

I think I read one book last year before I got my ebook reader I've read a lot more this year. I love to learn but I'm dyslexic and generally reading tires me out, it's slow and I get headaches, I can convert the ebook using different size fonts, different amounts of text per page and generally tweak the experience in a way I can't with books. It makes a huge difference.

[–]Illanit1 67 points68 points ago

Except this isn't the library that gets used. It's just display/museum now- look at the rope barriers. The real library is kind of shitty and industrial looking inside. - former student

[–]floor-pi 13 points14 points ago

The books are still used, you can have them taken from the Long Room up in the Early Printed Books section of the library. Then, gloves.

[–]sionnach 10 points11 points ago

It may not be the prettiest building, but it's not a shitty library. It's a legal deposit library, and if you publish a book in either Ireland or Great Britain you must deposit a copy with the TCD library - making it pretty non-shitty as it has a copy of pretty much everything.

[–]craiclad 1 point2 points ago

Ah the new one isnt that bad, that giant glass walkway is a little scary though...

[–]deineoma 3 points4 points ago

it's not even for free to enter...

[–]hodsonr 10 points11 points ago

It is for students and staff of the university.

[–]Nefilim777 1 point2 points ago

Yup, fellow graduate here, you certainly can use the library.

[–]PossiblyDavid 3 points4 points ago

Looks like christmas.

[–]SnailShells 1 point2 points ago

God, she's beautiful.

[–]scrtagent101 21 points22 points ago

If you can't touch the books, it's not a library. Turn on your Kindle as you leave.

[–]ramsay_baggins 20 points21 points ago

Kindles and physical books are in no way mutually exclusive. I love both.

[–]Naeddyr 71 points72 points ago

This is such a stupid and abrasive and picking-a-fighty title. Do you even read? Or are you one of those people who happens to love books, but don't even open them? Because most people who own an e-reader (a Kindle or something else)* really, really* love reading. The physical substance of a book is immaterial (pun), what counts is not whether a book looks antique, smells like centuries old glue or is housed in a museum filled with literary death, but what a book contains. To think otherwise is to... judge a... thing by its appearance. It is naive and silly.

[–]furshizzle 7 points8 points ago

Yeah this is what got me when I first got my Kindle years ago and people would argue about how much "better" books were. How? I've always read books for the content, and never cared one way or another about the delivery-mechanism.

Once a far-superior-in-every-way content-delivery method was made available, I immediately adopted it and have loved every aspect of e-readers as compared to books. They just make reading easier, more convenient, and more comfortable.

What I've come to realize is that a lot of people are attached to form rather than function. They are fixated on the form of paper books - the feel, the smell, the heft, the permanence. For me (and you, and others like us) it's just the content we're after.

People who collect vinyl records are similar to people who love the form of books I think.

[–]sgt_hatred 2 points3 points ago

:( heyyy leave my records out of this..

[–]sgt_hatred 1 point2 points ago

I agree whole-heartedly with what you're saying; I'm on your side of this argument. However, there is merit in being wary of technology before accepting it because of the way it alters our lifestyles. Marshall McLuhan's famous "the medium is the message" deals with this exactly.

What does having an e-reader do to your value of the reading material? Sure, people who are obsessed with physical books are being fetishistic but that's what some people do to help them appreciate something. It helps to have some big chunky paper-smelling book to get a level of physical satisfaction along with mental stimulation.

Don't get me wrong i'm pretty sure OP didn't think of it on that level. This reeks of band-wagoning. e-readers are better for the environment too.

[–]CitizenPremier 1 point2 points ago

You know what would be nice is to get an old book with a great feel and smell, then hollow it out and use it as a kindle holder.

[–]PieBoy 6 points7 points ago

This is my college. Look at me. I go there.

[–]phil8248 5 points6 points ago

Still one of my favorite places that I have visited. It is just so astounding to think of all the ancient information amassed there. Sure lots of it is outdated but it is like touching the past when it is packed so tightly into one place. I loved the Book of Kells too. Dublin was such a magical city.

[–]hodsonr 3 points4 points ago

The Long Room of the Old Library of Trinity College Dublin, to be precise.

[–]JavaLSU 7 points8 points ago

What if I bring my kindle and read it in that library?

[–]walrusoreoanw 14 points15 points ago

except for the fact that 4-5 kindles could hold all of them

[–]odinsbane 14 points15 points ago

I doubt it would take so many kindles.

[–]notbookies 7 points8 points ago

Would only take 1 with a big enough SD card.

[–]cleefa 3 points4 points ago

Apparently it would take about 25,000. Trinity Library has about 5 million books/volumes.

Not allowing for illustrations.

Edit: Apparently a Kindle 2 holds more books. You'd only need 3,333 of those.

[–]odinsbane 1 point2 points ago

That is a lot of books.

[–]cleefa 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, it's a copyright library. They have a couple of library buildings on campus but they also maintain a warehouse a little outside the city centre. If you want a book from there you have to request it.

[–]plus_EV 1 point2 points ago

Or one kindle and Amazon's cloud.

[–]SmokeDiverFF 4 points5 points ago

I enjoyed this picture courtesy of my Kindle Fire.

[–]Metallyptika 3 points4 points ago

[–]iownachalkboard7 3 points4 points ago

I totally agree with OP, but I actually went to see the book of kells and this library a couple months ago. It just sort of annoyed me that the library wasn't a library, its more of an exhibit now. They charge you 10 euro to walk through this thing and all I could think about was "why isn't this beautiful place a fucking library anymore?"

Take all those ancient manuscripts and books and put them somewhere that they can be seen but not damaged, and fill the fucking place with books that the public is actually allowed to read. Isn't that the point of a library in the first place?

Eh, maybe I'm just being picky.

[–]speleojeff 7 points8 points ago

That's a nice steampunk version of Google!

[–]tiddertodder 2 points3 points ago

I think that "the book" represents the container of our imagination and creativity which continues to intrigue and inspire the architecture and design of this library just as the notion and realization of putting it online at Amazon. The Kindle, itself an inspiration, has brought the notion of a container for this imagination and creativity into the 21st century. Be open to watching the continuation of where it leads us.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Been there. The general public is not allowed anywhere near the books.

[–]mrfahrenheit94 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of that one challenge map in Batman Arkham Asylum.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]megret 6 points7 points ago

Truth. I have a Kindle, and love it, and I have a stack of books at home that I also adore.

When I was reading Son of the Circus, I couldn't carry the book around (it's about 700 pages and my copy was hard-cover) so I borrowed it on my Kindle and went back and forth between the two. Kindle when I'm on the train, book when I'm at home. It was great.

[–]anonymous92 10 points11 points ago

[–]crazyex 4 points5 points ago

"Hey! Who turned out the lights?"

[–]fluxity 1 point2 points ago

Stay out of the shadows....

[–]joshgeek 5 points6 points ago

Visited back in 96 when I was in the 8th grade. It remains the most impressive library I've had the pleasure of seeing. I will get back to Ireland one day.

[–]boochenhiem 1 point2 points ago

Don't you mean the Jedi Archives?

[–]itorres1490 1 point2 points ago

Alright then, swear off of using the internet to find out information for a year and just go there. Good luck getting recent information in an encyclopedia.

[–]frooglekade 1 point2 points ago

its the Star Wars Library

[–]B00G3R 1 point2 points ago

Addressing the kindle VS real book argument: I don't understand why some people seem to feel it has to be one or the other. I have a kindle and I love it, but I also still love to read a real book from time to time. I still have a library card as well as my amazon card. I can still smell old or new books and enjoy the practicality of an e-reader. I'm just saying, why not both? I can't be the first to enjoy the best of both these worlds but I have yet to read a comment pointing this out.

[–]Kablaaamo 1 point2 points ago

It looks like the Archives on Coruscant from Star Wars

[–]sionnach 1 point2 points ago

That's because they're based upon it - no accident.

[–]Loki-L 1 point2 points ago

Why would the people in Dublin build a library based on Star Wars? I guess they must all be pretty big fans over there.

(Based on past experience I feel required to add that the above was an attempt at humor and not a statement made out of genuine ignorance.)

[–]Elderh12 1 point2 points ago

Just nothin like books. 'Specially leather-bound ones with mahogany furniture

[–]doug 1 point2 points ago

Nice pic, goddamn retarded headline.

[–]BOMANTIME 1 point2 points ago

Ive beent there. You cant actually read anything unless you go to the collage. Just saying.

[–]maroonlife 1 point2 points ago

Kindles have not just nothing, they have all of it.

[–]AlphaHotel_94 1 point2 points ago

Of all the stupid, meritless arguments that exist out there, eBooks vs. Books has to be number one.

[–]silent_kiwi 1 point2 points ago

Is this the jedi academy library from episode 2?

[–]root66 1 point2 points ago

Oh, grandpa... Shut up.

[–]jdrvero 1 point2 points ago

I thought the kindle would have more books available to it than the library. I was wrong. The library has about 5 million, with 100,000 coming in each year. The kindle has between 800,000 and a million. I give this about 5 years until amazon beats it.

[–]AllDizzle 1 point2 points ago

Except for the fact they transport easily, and one is in my living room.

Not to mention the fact I don't have to search for hours for a book.

[–]publius4 1 point2 points ago

Why does it always have to be Kindle vs. books?

The kindle is incredibly convenient and encourages people to read, and books will never be replaceable because there's just something about the tactile feel of a book that will never get old.

You don't have to pick one or the other.

[–]MostModern 1 point2 points ago

I just looked at this photo on my Kindle.

[–]monkey80 1 point2 points ago

When my father, and I visited Trinity Library I was looking around when I suddenly noticed a copy of the yellow pages among books hundreds of years old. I whispered to my dad, "I didn't know the yellow pages were that old." He laughed so hard, we both got a very stern look from the librarian.

[–]autopsi 1 point2 points ago

Fun fact: The entirety of that library could be stored on just 1,285 kindles.

Assuming 4.5 million printed volumes and 3,500 books per kindle.

Note: I am sure that the storage capability of kindle is limited to 4gb to lower the cost. I'm sure they could make 32gb kindles without too much (if any) added size or weight.

Extrapolation: 160 32gb Kindles would hold that library.

Also: That library contains aprox. 5,120gb or (exactly) 5 petabytes.

[–]brandonfalcon 1 point2 points ago

Count the shadows...

[–]ColonelRuffhouse 1 point2 points ago

I'll be honest, I strongly dislike Kindle's. Book's don't take up that much space, and for me at least, there's nothing quite like picking up that worn book, opening the cover, and flipping the first page to start a new adventure. Books have this special sort of magic which electronics can't ever replace for me.

[–]UnculturedLout 1 point2 points ago

There's still nothing like the tactile sensation of holding a book. The smell of the paper and ink. The crisp crackle of the new or soft silky whisper of the old pages.

E-readers are practical, but they lack the feast of sensory input a book gives you.

You could savour a succulent feast, or you can eat vitamin pills and protein slurry. It's all the same in one way, but a world of difference in another.

[–]transit441 1 point2 points ago

I would really like to have a 1080p of this for my background if anyone has one/can find a nice one.

[–]nastros 8 points9 points ago

God you Trinity people are even bragging on reddit now. Would ye not just fuck off?

[–]PoniesYay 5 points6 points ago

If it makes you feel any better this is a repost so OP probably doesn't go to Trinity college.

[–]BALLS_AND_SHIT 2 points3 points ago

Kindles don't have that old book smell.

[–]Fartmatic 21 points22 points ago

I see you haven't downloaded the latest update yet

[–]biggmclargehuge 7 points8 points ago

mildew?

[–]BloodFeces 2 points3 points ago

[–]LoveOfProfit 1 point2 points ago

Nothing except for the portability advantage in terms of weight and size, free access to Wikipedia through 3G, much easier to search and retrieve for a book in my Kindle's library than flying to Dublin and tracking down what I want, etc.

Don't kid yourself. Kindles are fucking great.

[–]MentalProblems 0 points1 point ago

I've been there. Smells like your gran's house when she hasn't opened a window in a few days.

[–]makita69 0 points1 point ago

been there

[–]CoyoteStark 0 points1 point ago

Unless they took kindling to the library, in which case Fire: 1 Book: 0

[–]lonzo99 0 points1 point ago

Upvoted 'cause Starwars.

[–]Baskin 0 points1 point ago

This is how I feel every morning logging onto Reddit. I have a lot to read!

[–]Zulakki 0 points1 point ago

Shouldn't it be almost be mandatory that someone Scan / PDF all that just for the simple precaution that they might be destroyed some day?

and also not to mention that maybe there's something within those texts that others may enjoy?

...or do they do this and I'm just ill informed?

[–]ardbeg 0 points1 point ago

The Playfair Library at Edinburgh University is also pretty sweet.

http://www.henniker.org.uk/images/places/local_a/ed_sth/bristo_mcewan_geo-sq/PlayfairLibrary00.jpg

Distracting exam venue though.

[–]draivaden 0 points1 point ago

Give them a week.

[–]Eggpot1 0 points1 point ago

Do you think they have Goosebumps?

[–]NoToRAtheism 0 points1 point ago

Why are they no j's on the walls?

[–]shelteredsun 0 points1 point ago

Fun fact: The books are not arranged by author, title or subject, but by size.

[–]Thrillah 0 points1 point ago

tl;dr

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Not exactly the same, but still relevant

Ipad 2 vs Library

[–]parlokin 0 points1 point ago

The best part is it gets over 2 visitors per year.

[–]kimberlygoly 0 points1 point ago

I accidentally napped on one of those benches. It was lovely.

[–]Aquilonium_Astrum 0 points1 point ago

It's the Jedi archives IRL.

[–]JTBowtie 0 points1 point ago

I remember taking a tour when I was ten, and I got to see the book of kells. Man that was awesome

[–]eydryan 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure you can get that photo on your kindle :p

[–]rennsport 1 point2 points ago

edit: nvm

[–]pipnestella 0 points1 point ago

No it doesn't but, you can't carry this library around.

[–]Title11 0 points1 point ago

I'm really, really disappointed that there is no Doctor Who reference in these comments. Get your head in the game, reddit!

[–]lukas8u 0 points1 point ago

How about the fact that you don't have to go to Dublin to read the books there?

[–]hulahoop12 0 points1 point ago

I think I need to go here.

[–]mapkinase 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. NExt time I am in Dublin, this is the place I am reading from my phone.

[–]Mexican_Godzilla 0 points1 point ago

I would go there and read my kindle. Not to be contrary or anything. I just like sitting in library's like this.

[–]Hicut92 0 points1 point ago

I love the Kindle and I love physical books. I don't care about the packaging, I care about the ideas and the story.

[–]jessicaltman 0 points1 point ago

bookgasm

[–]sapekpj 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure that this is on Coruscant

[–]JpSax 0 points1 point ago

Its like once a month this picture pops up. There should be a blacklist for some of these photos on the side bar like /r/music and some other subs have

[–]x61 0 points1 point ago

True. A kindle library is a little more like this. http://i.imgur.com/Zos41.jpg

[–]atrain1486 0 points1 point ago

Don't count out the Nook. Its git a 32gb memory slot

[–]Kearnia 0 points1 point ago

It looks so beautiful! I wish the library we have was half that nice.

[–]Hugh_Jabs 0 points1 point ago

You call that a library? They don't have Twilight and the DVDs suck!

[–]WadeyLady 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I saw pictures, thought it was amazing, went there...couldn't touch a fucking book!! How mislead I was by pictures like this :(

[–]wanderer11 0 points1 point ago

There's still something special about holding a book and turning the pages yourself.

[–]tardis2464 0 points1 point ago

i so want to go back there

[–]SaintPwner 0 points1 point ago

this is the only thing that pops into mind, the Jedi temple library.

http://2damnfunny.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Star-Wars-Jedi-Library-Vs.-Dublin-Library.jpg

[–]taint_odour 2 points3 points ago

Probably because it was used for that.

[–]CarbonNanosaur 0 points1 point ago

And because I don't have a book storage facility of this magnitude, I have an e-reader. I still have a couple of bookshelves to hold my "look how much I know" science books, my leatherbound edition of Lord of the Rings, and things like that. I no longer purchase hard copies of books I know I'll read once and think "meh, it was ok". E readers are great for that. They're also great for reading potentially embarrassing books in public places. Books are wonderful. E readers are also wonderful.

[–]taint_odour 0 points1 point ago

What a special picture. I enjoy it every time it is posted.

[–]pterodactyl12 0 points1 point ago

If I ever get rich I will fill a library with kindles. However, like a traditional library each kindle will only hold one book. Totally ballin'...

[–]dyrnwynsk 0 points1 point ago

No but Trinity Library could be on a Kindle.

[–]SiMMENS 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I've been there and the picture doesn't do it justice. Absolutely amazing

[–]AdonisChrist 0 points1 point ago

The search function is pretty nifty.

Sure, this is gorgeously designed, but a kindle is infinitely more convenient. and I consider myself rather bibliophilic.

[–]afihavok 0 points1 point ago

except for customers

[–]handsarealwaysticky 0 points1 point ago

Does anybody else think this looks oddly familar from the starwars libary form battfiled 2 ?

[–]Technosnake 0 points1 point ago

Splinter Cell?

[–]khard1575 0 points1 point ago

could probably put all those books on a kindle, and save so much more space

[–]RhinoMan2112 0 points1 point ago

It's so amazing to think.... Practially an entire wall of bookcases can be fit into the chip just bigger than your thumbnail, and the whole library into a small device no bigger than your lap.

[–]Venom_Raptor 0 points1 point ago

All I see is the Jedi archives.

[–]Stormdancer 0 points1 point ago

Oh...boner... is this really an appropriate time?

I... I guess it is.

[–]SPaskwietz 0 points1 point ago

I thought of that library in Star Wars at first.

[–]JamesGravy 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the Jedi Temple

[–]miles920 0 points1 point ago

Actually kindles probably have all of that...

[–]Epicshark 0 points1 point ago

What about the internet?

[–]hannahwartooth 0 points1 point ago

Until you forget to count the shadows and your face ends up eaten.

[–]imasavageforthecock 0 points1 point ago

I live near this, beautiful aint it ;)

[–]SuperEffectives 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of the Jedi Archives...

[–]Is_It_Beautiful 0 points1 point ago

Yes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Ahhhhh the smell of an old library! I love my ebooks, and the feel of an old much revered book.

[–]Oni_Kami 0 points1 point ago

THINK OF ALL THE KINDLES THAT COULD HOLD!

[–]Nemus89 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, this picture totally mind fucked me. Took me a legit 10 secs for my eyes to properly focus.

[–]StickyNinja 0 points1 point ago

Repost. But this is funny I just got back from dublin after seeing this and just yesterday I finished a 500 piece puzzle on the library. OH and one more thing, how did you get this you criminal! Taking pictures is prohibited around the book of Kells! You should be sentenced to death.

[–]PossiblyDavid 0 points1 point ago

I think I saw this in star wars once.

[–]whatkindofdrugsdenny 0 points1 point ago

Clearly never been to the Bodleian.

[–]InkieRetro 0 points1 point ago

Count the shadows. Beware the Vashta Nerada.

[–]SolarSailing 0 points1 point ago

I've been there. It is an amazing place.

[–]cresseychaos 0 points1 point ago

Yes, those two things can simply never co-exist!

[–]cloudofawesome 0 points1 point ago

"If an item does not appear in our records, it does not exist!"

[–]cloud_watcher 0 points1 point ago

The real game changer about the ereaders is text books. IMAGINE! Take any kind of medical or technical school, for example. They've always had to describe in words very complicated procedures. Imagine reading how to do a complicated surgery or engine rebuild, etc. It's very complicated, especially for the very many people who are visual learners.

Now, they can just slip a video in there that shows how it's done. So many things can't be illustrated with static pictures and directions. It's the difference between a cookbook and the Food Network.

And so much money is wasted on reprinting the exact same book with just a few new updates. Now, all the updates can be done electronically without the incredible waste of ink and paper.

AND, no more carrying around all those books. I have a theory that school kids don't read their books more because they're so heavy. Only a crazy person would carry 40 pounds of books back and forth every day. Now, one slim tablet and that's it. Terrible time to work at Dunder-Mifflin, but otherwise, I only see the upside.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

That's why i use my kindle only for my erotica :D So much free things :D

[–]fukc_you 0 points1 point ago

Imagine falling off that ladder and falling over the edge.

[–]surfnaked 0 points1 point ago

Exactly why I got a Kindle. I don't have that kind of storage room. I'd like that much better, but you do what you got to do.
