I'm a part time sup and I feel like a broken record trying to tell everybody to use the 8 Keys and whatnot. They all kinda blow me off, but one of my loaders actually pulled his groin by using improper methods. When my people start rolling the eyes, I always yell up to the guy who injured himself, (he's a pickoff sorter so I just kinda yell up to him) "Hey man, how bad did your balls hurt when you lifted poorly?" "Really bad" is always the answer. lol

8 Keys to Lifting and Lowering

  1. Get close to the object--work within your Power Zone.

  2. Position your feet shoulder width apart, one slightly ahead of the other.

  3. Bend at the knees--keep the natural curve of your back.

  4. Test the object for weight and shifting contents.

  5. Get a firm grip and grasp opposite corners.

  6. Lift with a smooth steady motion--don't jerk.

  7. Move your feet. Step or pivot--don't twist.

  8. Use existing equipment for facilities to assist in the lift or lower.

5 Keys to Prevent Slips/Falls

  1. Walk at a brisk pace--don't run.

  2. Establish firm footing and maintain your balance.

  3. Do not walk on coveyor roller, chutes or slides.

  4. Look before stepping.

  5. Make adjustments for changing conditions.

Upvote for fellow UPSers!

I wish half of my loaders knew it word for word like that. A few of them do tough. The main thing they get wrong is the MCCR questions. lol

I always thought the Depth of Knowledge questions were pretty easy for package handlers. The ones for supervisors are a pain.

well, remember the type of education it takes to lift things up and put them down...

I've been working there for 10 years and some of the people who come in you just wonder how they survived as long as they did... not to say they're not nice people... just sometimes... WHEW

most of the stuff though, is common knowledge and second nature and they all know it and, for the most part, use it... but sometimes it's just hard to think and recite it under pressure...

I worked as a loader for UPS. It was one of the hardest jobs I've ever had.

Used to work at a McDonald's warehouse. Not following such advice led to a herniated disc in my back. Bad times.
