I'm not going to lie, that is some really inspirational stuff.

[–]__circle 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. Legitimately great quote.

[–]feeish[S] 14 points15 points ago

When I'm working out or playing rugby and I feel like stopping for a break I think of this story and push myself until I've finished.

[–]SativaSunday 7 points8 points ago

Heck yeah! You're only inspiring me more, bro

[–]feeish[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, I makes me happy knowing that.

[–]IAMJesusAMAA 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for posting this man

[–]feeish[S] 0 points1 point ago

Your welcome

[–]macababy 0 points1 point ago

yup, I like to remember that the only thing that would feel better than taking a break right now is not taking a break and knowing later that evening that you pushed through it.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

If your mind can think of it, and has the proper motivation behind it your body will make it so.

[–]bongtin 4 points5 points ago

Who was the guy Bruce said it to?

[–]Slashur_8 4 points5 points ago

Gandhi.

[–]Defk1n 1 point2 points ago

To John Little, from The Art of Expressing the Human Body

[–]whoMEvernot 7 points8 points ago

I find this to be one of the most silly quote of all that are posted. So we could turn to Bruce and change the distance to 100miles on that same day or a 1000. Push limits or death is silly sentiment in every case but pushing yourself periodically is worthwhile.

[–]inbeforethelube 0 points1 point ago

I think this quote would stand up against comments like this if the "anything else" part was looked at more. I feel if this is applied to your mental capacity and work ethic instead of a jog in the park it holds much more value.

[–]delmar15 2 points3 points ago

I've seen this before... I had a shitty day today... this gives me goosebumps...

[–]Maletal 20 points21 points ago

It's a nice sentiment. It speaks to the part of people that want to believe that limits are only self-imposed, that it is possible to live without compromising with reality.

Really, though, it doesn't hold up. Limits are valuable. To say I will not do more, because it might kill me and this is not worth dying for - that's sensible. Knowing where those limits are and should be is one thing, and pushing them is valuable - but suggesting that they do not exist is insane.

And that belongs in our morality too. There should be lines you are not willing to cross.

Yes, a man should work to excel, to exceed himself - but he should do so wisely. If you do not accept your limitations they will destroy you, when instead you might turn your energy elsewhere.

[–]article134 16 points17 points ago

Everything this quote stands for, you just trod all over. The mere condition that we are human makes us put limitations on ourselves. The body is capable of so much more than our minds think it's capable of, and that's for self-preservation. For instances such as this quote, yes....every part of this mans being was telling him to stop running, and Bruce having said "then die" made him pissed and made him run more...proving the man's own statement wrong. A human's body is capable of so much more than it thinks it's capable of. Do i think it's an excuse for stupidity? No. Taken in the wrong connotation it could be interpreted wrongly, but what I think Bruce was trying to get across was that in extreme physical circumstances, the human body is capable of things that would far exceed it's normal threshold of pain.

[–]Maletal 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, I did tread all over it, because it's wrong. The quote presents a single story, and within that story you're right and Bruce is shown to be right. We can push ourselves.

There's no mention of the actual physical status of the narrator, or how he felt afterwards. He could have actually been on the verge of a heart attack, and if things had gone a little differently he might have actually had one.

Besides that, yes, the human body is capable of pushing it's normal limits - always at a price. A lot of people are familiar with the idea of adrenaline induced strength, which makes people suddenly capable of superhuman feats. Did you know that it also severely damages the muscles that were used? Hell, a more mundane example - if you try to do too much when you're working out, you hurt yourself.

If your limitations are only self-imposed, then it is valuable to push them, but from there comes the wisdom of knowing where your limits are. This quote has nothing to do with that, and ignores it like a child who wants to believe in a simpler world where people can do anything they want with a little grit.

This quote is about a man telling another man who may well have been put in mortal danger by that level of exertion to die. Bruce Lee is being a prick. He's in good shape to do 5 miles. And yet he stops at 5, and belittles someone else for struggling. Maybe the narrator was fine and just complaining, sure, those details are ambiguous. Maybe it was appropriate for that situation. If you take the sentiment to heart, though, then there are a thousand situations where you will put yourself in danger for the sake of denying that limitations exist.

TLDR; Pushing yourself to achieve your best potential and ignoring limits are too very different things.

[–]article134 1 point2 points ago

I don't think so.

[–]twobagels 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. It's too simplistic and represents only one perspective from a man extraordinarily devoted to fitness (mental and physical) who had a natural gift and spent his life trying to build and exceed his limits. But, as you mentioned, this is not reality. Most people don't have that kind of time and/or desire to so thoroughly push their limits. It takes massive amounts of dedication to even build up to your perceived potential, and then to try and push beyond it?

Maybe I'm just cynical, and I agree that people need motivation, but sometimes you can go too far and there's consequences. Being reasonable is better, IMHO.

FYI: I believe the narrator of this story is Kareem Abdul Jabaar. I think.

[–]kabomlamma 0 points1 point ago

can I push the bone in your arm to its limit?,or preferably over it?

[–]article134 0 points1 point ago

Hey, kabomlamma, you may not.

[–]kabomlamma 0 points1 point ago

aaahh, where is your spirit?

[–]feeish[S] 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. The way I interpreted this quote is the sense that my body is capable but my mind isn't willing. When even I play rugby and I feel like my legs are going to give out I think "If I can walk off the field at the end of the game I haven't given enough." I will get to a point where I just can't physically continue and that is my plateau. Next time I play I try to push my plateau to the next level.

[–]Blake6 -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah Maletal doesn't get it. The amount of upvotes he's getting is kind of funny. Shows how the average redditor feels about a good challenge.

[–]article134 1 point2 points ago

honestly I came to the comments and saw this as the top comment...and was disappointed.

[–]Blake6 -5 points-4 points ago

This image has been posted to many subreddits, many times. It's relevant to almost everything. I have never seen a comment like this. It's just horrifyingly....pathetic.

[–]kaasgaard 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, just shit all over the guy because he doesn't share your worldview :<

[–]Blake6 0 points1 point ago

I'm fine with his worldview it just bothers me seeing it posted to this image. I'm probably being too harsh to be honest, you're right. Calling this way off thinking a sentiment pissed me off.

[–]Canadoz 2 points3 points ago

I agree with the quote. But it's very possible that this philosophy killed Bruce Lee. He died of a swelling of the brain, speculated as being due to a hypersensitivity to aspirin. But it could have been a result of pushing the human body too far beyond its limits. We're not made of steel. Even so, if his death was from pushing too hard, he died as he intended, without compromise.

[–]Thimble 2 points3 points ago

I don't think Lee meant that there are no real limits. I think he meant that we need to exceed self constraining illusory limits. The man in the story had put a 3 mile limit on himself by thinking he was too old and his heart was not strong enough. He always could do five, if only he could look beyond his fears.

[–]Blake6 3 points4 points ago

99% of us won't hit our limit in anything. Few of us even approach them. This is for the majority of the population who don't want to work hard at something. There's always room for improvement.

[–]article134 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. Until you've literally been beaten into the ground, and I mean literally....beaten...into....the ground......for something you want badly, you haven't lived, or wanted. Suffering for something makes getting it all the greater.

[–]jaydid 8 points9 points ago

Agreed. Great quote, great sentiment, not really applicable for everything. But I get the idea and it sure sounds nice on paper.

[–]feeish[S] 0 points1 point ago

To say I will not do more, because it might kill me and this is not worth dying for - that's sensible

To quote Bruce Lee:

If it kills you it kills you. A man must consistently exceed his level

The whole point behind this quote is to say that giving in to one's own limits will only hurt you. Follow your convictions and never give in. Your post seems to ignore the whole idea behind the quote which is never give up and push yourself higher each and everyday.

[–]Maletal -1 points0 points ago

I'd rather spend my life doing something worthwhile than kill myself running because I wasn't in shape to run that day.

[–]Chuckgofer 1 point2 points ago

That advice really did him well.... ...oh, wait, he died.

[–]wittyrandomusername 4 points5 points ago

Everybody dies. He also lived though. He lived a fuller life than most people.

[–]kabomlamma 0 points1 point ago

full with what?

[–]englad 1 point2 points ago

training, and pain from his injuries

[–]article134 -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah except no.

[–]aerosol999 0 points1 point ago

I don't think he's suggesting limits don't exist. But you're most certainly not going to reach them. It's always possible to push it a little bit further.

He's not suggesting you set up unrealistic goals, but instead don't stop challenging yourself.

[–]feeish[S] 0 points1 point ago

I live by that. I love Bruce Lee's philosophy he is one of the most inspiring people (to me at least)

[–]MasterBistro 0 points1 point ago

Here is another use of that idea, probably inspired by Bruce Lee.

[–]CharlestonChewbacca 0 points1 point ago

I find it hard to believe that Bruce Lee could only run a 19:30 3 mile...

[–]Cameron94 0 points1 point ago

This is awesome, and just finished a 3-mile run in 20 minutes after having a break from running. I really hope I can make it onto my towns running team. This made me feel so much more encouraged to push myself and get there!

[–]epicog 0 points1 point ago

I upvote this everytime i see it. Bruce Lee is the man

[–]Fleudian 0 points1 point ago

Who is this story from?

[–]proxypanda -1 points0 points ago

I like how the writer took the time to dramatically point out that Bruce Lee got his time down to 6:30 per mile at a later point.

The other day, me and a few of my XC buddies did 11 miles at 5:40 pace. For training purposes, not a race.

We are not even close to being considered adept runners. I didn't even win counties in High School.

I'm pretty sure a fitness Guru like Bruce Lee would be well aware that 6:30 pace is a pansy pace, the person who wrote this is just completely oblivious.

Sorry, it really bugged me that much.
