That handwriting is just beautiful.

[–]crayola_ferrari 467 points468 points ago

If you love it so much why don't you marry it?

[–][deleted] 248 points249 points ago

I remember first grade.

[–]fishiecracker 166 points167 points ago

Hey butt face shut up im in second grade!

[–][deleted] 152 points153 points ago

What did you just call me? Slowly raises hand in air.

[–]fishiecracker 151 points152 points ago

OH GOD PLEASE NO IM SORRY I DIDNT MEAN IT!

[–][deleted] 87 points88 points ago

That's right, fishie. Now hand over animal crackers and we can forget this happened.

[–]princessbubblegum 55 points56 points ago

As the token weird girl who's obsessed with horses and constantly smells like cat piss I've already gone to the teacher within the time it took to finish your argument.

Suck on that, booger brains.

[–]unorigionalname 24 points25 points ago

We had one of those! Her name was Susan and she was a total nut case. Always eating apples and making horse noises at us, playing "horses" outside at breaks. Once her friend, Heather, bit me whilst standing in line. This was grade 8 and these 2 didn't change in highschool either. They were so weird.

[–]ara_p 14 points15 points ago

Back off, bully, or I'll piledrive you!

[–]mrcertainlynot 4 points5 points ago

This is fitting, I believe.

[–]Solefirefly 29 points30 points ago

During first grade I had a classmate who had the most gorgeous handwriting according to my young impressionable mind. I've always had a stuttering problem as well as being incredibly shy. One day I decide I'm going to tell her that her handwriting is pretty, fuck my shyness. I walk over to her desk and attempt to convey how beautiful I think her handwriting is. Instead of proclaiming how awesome I believe her handwriting is I murmur that I like her. By now I'm completely red in the face and about to cry all while the girl is just looking at me with this confused expression. It was one of the worst days in first grade.

TL:DR- Shyness + Stuttering = First-grade lesbian

[–]eninety2 2 points3 points ago

woah, late lesbian plot twist....totally thought I was reading a boys perspective.

So pretty I don't even care I can't read it.

[–]bottle_cap 1 point2 points ago

brb becoming a server

[–]letsgoiowa 3 points4 points ago

You know, that's rather expensive. Not everyone can afford to become a major part of website hosting. But what you can afford is to be a waiter.

[–]moskoismycat 3 points4 points ago

These things don't happen everyday. That $2 tip on $40 tonight was awesome. Though on New Year's Day, I received a $50 tip on a $45 check, with a note saying, "Thank you for taking such great care of us. Bless you."

[–]miss_guided 1 point2 points ago

Looks like my grandmother's handwriting. I miss her :(

[–]captainburp 3 points4 points ago

If you like nice handwriting you just wait till I show you my boss's handwriting. You wait and see.

edit: when my reddit career crashes I'm starting a matchmaking service

[–]aceoftrachs 15 points16 points ago

Reddate would work as a name for the service.

[–]Calvin_Kim 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, you got Reddate, Redtube, etc etc.

[–]AustinYQM 1 point2 points ago

Like jdate but for native Americans!

[–]i7omahawki 1 point2 points ago

Don't crash your reddit career, you have a ferrari in your username.

[–]ElDuderino103 103 points104 points ago

My friend did that once. He and his buddies were out on their motorcycles and they stopped in a diner a few states over. The waitress they got was being really bitchy to them, acting like she didn't want their business. They got the impression it was because they were a big group of bikers and she was judging them solely on that, believing them all to be thugs and criminals. In reality these guys were firefighters, businessmen, and your average country guys, half of them retired, all of them well-respected in their community. Hell, there were at least two millionaires at that table, one guy owned his own fishing tackle company. She ended up abandoning the table and leaving it to a much nicer waitress. When they got the bill, the whole table pooled their cash and tipped the new waitress ~$500. My friend, not a fan of being judged, and definitely not one to let things go, asked her if she could do them a favor and make sure to tell the other waitress about the sizable tip. Apparently new waitress wasn't a big fan of old waitress either, and she walked right up to her, fanned the bills out in front of her face and said "looks like you fucked up."

[–]sowisegius 16 points17 points ago

Number one rule of serving, never judge a book by its cover! Personally, I love bikers and biker rallies!

[–]Thjoth 11 points12 points ago

99% of the time, bikers are awesomely nice. That other 1%, though...

[–]leahcim314 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, friend of mine was a biker and this guy in a truck got his monkey to punch him.

So it's guys in trucks with a pet monkey you've got to watch.

[–]Rammikins 2 points3 points ago

Hell, there were at least two millionaires at that table, one guy owned his own fishing tackle company.

Note to future success: sell tackle. Lots of it.

[–]oopsbedtimeagain-o_o 2 points3 points ago

The irony is that she probably thought the big tip was because they were all rich from drug money and didn't gaf.

[–]blackkevinDUNK 22 points23 points ago

yo man come to my house ill make you a hamburger and be real nice and everything

[–]FlyingPasta 8 points9 points ago

In the least rapey way possible.

[–]Portmanteu 1 point2 points ago

Here's to hoping that leastrapey catches on like vitamin and modem. Plus, the end of TomKat has left an opening.

[–]Silicon_Hydra 42 points43 points ago

My cousin worked at the Windermere on a lake rosseau in Muskoka Ontario. A few summers ago one of her co-workers got tipped $10,000. The guy said, "Here, this should cover your tuition for the year"..I want THAT to happen to me one day!

[–]tejaswiy 8 points9 points ago

So I'm genuinely curious. How does tipping work in the US? Do all the employees have one large tip jar that everything goes into and gets split up? Or do you get to keep tips that you received?

[–]RandomHominid 17 points18 points ago

It depends on the place. Many (non-fast food) sit-down restaurants will have 1 waiter/waitress (the PC term is "server" now) that generally takes your order and brings your food and the tip goes to that person as they are assigned to that table. However, a lot of chain/every day restaurants have changed and there's a pool of servers so you may not get the same person checking up on you, not to mention the busboy and/or person who refills drinks. Some of these latter restaurants will have a pool and split the tips up based on certain rules. For large parties, the tip can be factored in to the bill automatically, whether you like it or not (usually 15-18%). Average tipping rates are around 15% of the pre-tax bill. Really good service usually warrants a bigger tip, 20% or more.

Then there's your smaller restaurant, cafe, coffee shop, and some fast-food restaurants that have a tip jar so you can leave tips if you like, whether it's just the change received or an extra dollar or two. If you're a regular, whether or not you tip is usually noticed. The jar is split up based on whatever the shop decides.

In bars or pubs, a usual tip is $1 per drink. More if you think it's worth it, are at some super fancy place, or you simply like the bartender.

What is a bit dumb is when you have a place like a self-serve yogurt joint that has a tip jar. They do nothing warranting personal service other than ringing you up because it's entirely self-service, so it seems a bit like begging.

Some places that don't have tipping (like a McDonald's type of fast food place) will occasionally have a customer who tips. This is rare and usually a surprise.

What's funny is that I learned many Japanese-run sushi restaurants prefer American customers because Americans tip. Japanese do not tip in their country, and either leave none or a very small tip. I assume this is true with some other types of restaurants and attitudes towards tippers.

[–]wazoheat 3 points4 points ago

Wait...how does it work outside the US?? I'm also genuinely curious...

[–]knightofmars 29 points30 points ago

I believe they actually pay living wages, but fuck that communist nonsense.

[–]abw 7 points8 points ago

In the UK all staff are paid a reasonable minimum wage by law. There's no moral obligation for customers to tip staff to supplement their income because the restaurant is underpaying them. That said, it's common to tip table waiting staff in restaurants 10-15% for good service, but if the service isn't good then the tip would be 0. In parts of the US, as I discovered, a 10% tip might be considered an insultingly low amount to tip.

We don't tip bar staff - table service is very rare in UK pubs so we walk to the bar to get drinks. The person working being the bar is being paid a decent wage to stand there and serve drinks, so there's no reason to tip him or her. However, we also tend to buy rounds of drinks, so one person might be at the bar ordering a dozen drinks. In that case, it's not uncommon to ask the bar person if they would "like one themselves", i.e. offer to buy them a drink. Many places don't allow their staff to drink alcohol on duty, so they'll often take the money for a small drink in lieu or save the drink for later.

We tip taxi drivers, food delivery drivers (pizza, etc) and hotel/airport/station porters. My wife also tips her hairdresser, but I wouldn't (current state of baldness notwithstanding). But in all those cases, it tends to be a couple of quid (equivalent to $2-3 USD, say) rather than a percentage of the total price.

As a general rule, I think we find the idea of tipping rather distasteful. We prefer to think that we give and get excellent service because of an individual's pride in their job rather than the promise of getting a good tip (how true this is in reality is an arguable point). So if you want good service in a UK restaurant then you generally get it by being nice to your server and treating them as an equal, not by the implied reward of a big tip.

[–]4ecohgie 4 points5 points ago

I was visiting London and decided to splurge on a great haircut, style, dye, and chemical treatment at the salon where the Beckhams go (my hair is my only big money investment in my life). As I would in Canada, I tipped the hairdresser big bucks (20% of the services...which is normal for back home, but happened to be a CONSIDERABLE amount based on the total). He was shocked. Could I have gotten away without it? It would have saved me a ton of money...

[–]abw 1 point2 points ago

He was shocked. Could I have gotten away without it?

Yes. My wife says she spends around £120-150 in the hair salon every couple of months and tips £10. Apparently, she also buys Paul (her hairdresser) a bottle of champagne at Christmas, so that's another ~£30 once a year. Averaging it out, he's getting about £15 per visit, or roughly 10%. So if you tipped more than £20 then yes, you've probably overdone it.

[–]Word_Analyzer 0 points1 point ago

Why hello there 4ecohgie! I am a bot!

I've studied your past comments on Reddit to find out which (not-so-common) words you use most frequently.

After analyzing 1208 unique words you've typed - I've found out these are your top 10 most used words:

---TSA ALERT: You have said the word bomb 1 time.---

[–]jtoft 3 points4 points ago

Europe (Well northern Europe at least): You don't tip at all.

The average base salary for a waiter in Denmark is ~20000dkr (~3300usd) pr. month. The danish waiters union (HORESTA) has a minimum salary of 130dkr (>20usd), or 70dkr if you are under 18. pr. hour.

[–]Koe-Rah-See 3 points4 points ago

In New Zealand we don't tip at all. EVER. Feels good man. There are occasionally tip jars, though.

[–]Charlie_Said 1 point2 points ago

We pay good money and hope that our employees give good service out of the kindness of their hearts and, guess what, normally works. Most wait staff would be on AUD 25+ phr.

[–]valfuindor 1 point2 points ago

Same as fellow Europens, here in Italy waiters get a reasonable wage - depending on the restaurant, of course. We rarely tip, usually it's done when the food and the service are exceptionally good. I tip the pizza/kebab delivery guy when he's on time or when it's raining (once the poor lad arrived 45' minutes late, but he was completely soaked). In bars and pubs they usually have a tipping jar. Basically, the rule is "if you are extremely satisfied, you might want to tip" but it's not mandatory.

In Japan, on the other side, if you tip... you'll get your money back. They consider it insulting and they probably think you are not familiar with their currency and that's why you've given the excess money.

If you don't tip in Morocco, Egypt or Tunisia, you probably have a death wish.

[–]NovelTeach 1 point2 points ago

I waitressed in college. We all kept our tips. We did have to pay a percentage to the bussers though. In the U.S. servers usually make about $2.65- $3.00 an hour before tips, so tipping is expected, unlike some countries I have heard of where it is customary, but not always expected. Canadians never seemed to tip well; I learned that it was because in Canada Servers made more so tips were less.

[–]cpp_is_king 1 point2 points ago

I worked at a random seafood restaurant once. Was above average in terms of class, but not like you-have-to-dress-up or anything. One of the waitress got a diamond ring as a tip once. The guy was old, she was like 26 or 27. Obviously he was a regular and she was his favorite waitress. I don't know what happened though, like if she gave it back or not.

[–]nickaroo 280 points281 points ago

[–]loves_being_that_guy 31 points32 points ago

And they're..you know... a cartoon character.......ಠ_ಠ

[–]LittleKobald 9 points10 points ago

I don't see the connection.

[–]Silversol99 2 points3 points ago

So in cartoon years they're legal?

[–]nightwheel 7 points8 points ago

You know, Ariel isn't under the legal limit for most of The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. Just saying.....

[–]Nashvillians 25 points26 points ago

I worked in a steakhouse in college. Had a guy tip me 1000 dollars on Ney Years Eve....

I want someone to give me a pony that shits money too. Sadly I don't see how I would deserve that.

[–]feckinmik 110 points111 points ago

That's awesome Micheal.

[–]Mantistobogganftw[S] 173 points174 points ago

It's spelled Michael like a normal person, my boss is just retarded and won't change it.

[–]EddieWinslow 37 points38 points ago

My boss put both my first and last name on it and didn't change it for months. Got quite a few strange FB requests during that time.

[–]yellowlikegold 69 points70 points ago

Maybe it was because of your fantastic acting on Family Matters.

[–]Mantistobogganftw[S] 32 points33 points ago

What's funny/fucking annoying about it is that when I started back there he accidentally made my account a manager's account with my name spelled correctly, which made my life a lot easier, then he realized his mistake and changed it to a server account with my name bastardized.

[–]ferrisssavior 7 points8 points ago

It's your penance.

[–]learntofart 4 points5 points ago

Sexy ones?

[–]DominicDom 8 points9 points ago

Be careful saying this. It is already popular and chances are it may get tracked back to you!

[–]pl02pl 7 points8 points ago

Why must everyone spell our name wrong? Not sure I've ever seen anyone spell it with -eal.

[–]Dillbill 4 points5 points ago

Just cause I think it's funny to spell your name wrong does NOT mean that you can insult me over the Internet, I am no fool Michael, you're fired...

[–]Enterice 1 point2 points ago

Pff, better than "Server: MC HAMMER"

[–]SecretJedi 1 point2 points ago

I've never met someone who spells it 'Micheal' but so many people seem to think that this is correct. It's the worst.

[–]kitty_o_shea 1 point2 points ago

It's spelled Micheal in Irish. Well, Micheál. Pronounced Mee-hawl, except not quite, there's a very soft "ch" sound in there. Here, listen.

[–]tonaros 1 point2 points ago

I actually work with a girl named "Micheal" pronounced like "Michelle."

[–]animevamp727 25 points26 points ago

i got tipped 5 bucks after a woman's cat bite me at work... i think it was hush money...

[–]West4Humanity 5 points6 points ago

ha... made me chuckle

[–]2ndChanceCharlie 24 points25 points ago

Trying to give someone something that will truly brighten their day is a pretty awesome way to remember someone you have lost.

[–]gloomdoom 92 points93 points ago

I'm happy for you and everything but why is it that every time I see a submission about there being good left in the world, it involves a huge tip or some kind of money.

Face it: The world is driven by it and redditors are no different. Their faith is restored when strangers give them chunks of cash. It's pretty disheartening to always be reminded that the main thing that brightens peoples' days are cash awards and gifts.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

There is so much good that can be done with money. When you think about it, a piece of paper that can be used as a tool to do good things. Would had been different if they had given her flowers, bought him a book, mowed his lawn? All of those things have a money equivalent. They didn't know him personally, so this was a way to say, "hey we would like to be a part of you doing something nice for yourself" or "taking care of yourself" etc. There is absolutely nothing wrong or bad about money.

[–]pidginduck 22 points23 points ago

Why? Cash takes work to earn. If anything, $50 is basically 10 hours of work given to a complete stranger. Sounds like altruism to me. I think you are under the money=materialism=bad mentality.

[–]bigandrewgold 12 points13 points ago

If you don't make fifty bucks in a days work then you need a new job, and also need to sue your employer.

[–]spacegirl3 1 point2 points ago

There's good left in the world: Juggalo chef didn't call me a demeaning name today.

[–]yankee-in-Denmark 1 point2 points ago

For me it is a loving gesture, but not so much to the waiter but rather to their son, who they obviously miss very much and are determined to remember in a way that is positive instead of mournful. Clearly a painful loss that they are trying to respond to with love.

[–]yourfaceyourass 2 points3 points ago

This is what I was thinking but I think it had more to do with the kind note she wrote on the side then the cash.

I mean if the side note said "Fuck you bitch" Or "Heres my number" but left the $50, wouldn't be the same.

[–]B1naryG0d 1 point2 points ago

Not every time. Example.

[–]Topper_Harley 1 point2 points ago

[–]deaft 58 points59 points ago

can someone thank me for murdering Joel already?

[–]jmp325 36 points37 points ago

Not sure if funny or...horrifying

[–]gojirra 19 points20 points ago

It's Reddit, they are always one and the same.

[–]JoelQ 25 points26 points ago

But I'm still alive!!

(I've never been able to make a "novelty account" joke before and this is my one chance!)

[–]reddent420 5 points6 points ago

10/10 horrified and amused wouldd fap again

[–]bready 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, the tipper is essentially honoring their loss of Joel with a big tip and it is a humanity restoring process?

*Note, I am actually an asshole, but getting a large tip does not mean the world is sunshine and rainbows.

[–]toastie 1 point2 points ago

I read that twice and then suddenly burst out laughing, thank you.

[–]IHv2RtrnSumVdeotapes 1 point2 points ago

thanks bro.

[–]justguessmyusername -1 points0 points ago

You are doing God's work. Well worth the $50!

[–]games0124 9 points10 points ago

Can someone post what the note says? I can't read it at all. Many thanks

[–]LanceCoolie 23 points24 points ago

A random act of love in memory of our son, Joel. He brightened everyone's day. May this brighten yours. Thank you.

[–]Hemordroid 1 point2 points ago

Thank you. The handwriting was so beautiful I couldn't read it.

[–]alucidreality 1 point2 points ago

it says, "memory our son." I probably would have been bothered by that and then noticed the 50 dollar tip. I'm just strange like that.

[–]big_shmegma 9 points10 points ago

im assuming you would be pretty pessimistic still if they had not tipped you 50 dollars?

[–]ThunderousWatcher 15 points16 points ago

they were so generous because they were using their dead sons credit card

[–]JoelQuest 2 points3 points ago

Michael is spelled wrong at the top.

[–]Hrog 2 points3 points ago

Just proves that Reddit is full of waiters and baristas.

[–]hoeding 16 points17 points ago

So money = love?

[–]BushMeat 6 points7 points ago

haven't you heard? "$5 me love you long time", "$50 me marry you long time"

[–]kolipo 3 points4 points ago

When I was 11 or so I worked on a sport fishing boat. The passengers would always ask me how much I got paid. I told them I got paid nothing. This job was the best way to get away from my abusive alcoholic father. I made bank in tips. I even beat out the captain on some trips!

[–]clinicall 9 points10 points ago

The best thing would be to pass on the $50 tip yourself. I bet it would feel better than anything it could buy. Unless its a bag of weed or a bj, but you should still pay it forward.

[–]Syrupsiipin 3 points4 points ago

This reminded me of something I saw yesterday. Kind of a similar story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP-TOI1mO0A

[–]Soljah 6 points7 points ago

There are tons of good people, however you thinking good people consists of you getting more money means you are a bad person. Think about it.

[–]Timlikesturtles 4 points5 points ago

Joel would be pissed at how many times this has been reposted. Way to commemorate him.

[–]EntOnFire87 1 point2 points ago

As a fellow working in the restaurant industry, things like this really do give me hope for man kind.

[–]macrolith 1 point2 points ago

After becoming a cook and finding out how little cooks make compared to servers makes all I can think is fuck you guys and your ability to make 3/4 of my paycheck in a single night. Sorry sort of off topic. I'd like to feel happy for you but I just can't.

Off topic, off topic, I don't come to a restaurant for the service but the food. I used to cook too, I hate tipping, I hate obnoxious wait staff who just flaunt their tip money. I am so glad most wait staff i knew blew their money on bars afterwards.

[–]lessthan10bbs 1 point2 points ago

Why do you spell your name Micheal?

[–]niko2000 1 point2 points ago

Freaking retarded, who writes sentences like that? Someone who needs meds.

''My cousin worked at the Windermere on a lake rosseau in Muskoka Ontario. A few summers ago one of her co-workers got tipped $10,000. The guy said, "Here, this should cover your tuition for the year"..I want THAT to happen to me one day!''

Me too. But I'd have to change my genitals.

[–]Faceplants 1 point2 points ago

I love random acts of awesomeness. This person is keeping their sons memory alive with kindness. Very cool.

[–]ConsumerOfFood 1 point2 points ago

$50 and 1400 upvotes,... today is your day.

[–]Jeffy29 1 point2 points ago

People argue how tip is pointless and waiters should have higher pay, but you have no idea how good it feels when you serve to pleasant customers who leave a great tip - it's really not about the money.

Immediate tears

Jim Morrison's bodyguard Tony Funches said that "The man tipped RUDE service extravagantly."...Once, "They encountered a rude, bitter old waitress who didn’t approve of hippies or blacks. When Jim left an extravagant $50 tip, she came running out of the restaurant after them, demanding to know why. Jim replied, “For such great service.” Tony still chuckles when he thinks of the woman’s expression." Source

Can me make it a rule that whenever a tip related receipt gets posted, the OP must show that it's the merchant copy?

[–]Darienjsmi93 2 points3 points ago

This happened at my workplace too. We couldn't process it though... our machine doesn't let us charge a tip higher than the bill... Feels bad man.

[–]mctrigger 2 points3 points ago

some one gave you 50 dollars, so you finally decide theres good in the world. you self centered prick.

In honor of Joel, maybe we can forego this perpetual debate just once. Brighten everyone's day.

[–]McMurphyCrazy 4 points5 points ago

These submissions are so fucking stupid.

Step 1) Go to restaurant
Step 2) Get customer copy of receipt
Step 3) Fill out with crazy high tip and some cutesy message
Step 4) Photograph
Step 5) Sweet sweet Karma.

The best waiter, leaves you alone and refills your drinks without asking. Seriously, if I didnt think it tasted 'OK' I'd have quietly ate it anyways instead of eating it.

[–]Amandrai 3 points4 points ago

Nothing wrong with this at all-- really touching, but, would you not agree that there is good in the world without you personally profiting $50 off of someone's bereavement?

[–]Favre4Life 2 points3 points ago

Because someone gave you money? You need to re-prioritize what you consider to be good in the world.

[–]beasterne 3 points4 points ago

Someone gave me $50! Humanity is saved!

/s

[–]apullin 3 points4 points ago

How does this classify as "good" ? You randomly made $50 extra for the 15 minutes of work you did for them. The don't even really know if you "need" it.

[–]HurricaneInsane 1 point2 points ago

That's awesome, congrats....

[–]stormtide311 1 point2 points ago

It's always a good nudge for the week to keep you positive. It's the little things in life that make that difference.

[–]robfs 1 point2 points ago

Did she also leave you a mysterious note with that $50 tip? Because I don't want to be dragged into those kind of shenanigans again.

[–]MonkeyCore 1 point2 points ago

This is sad and touching.... I'm picturing the customer seeing something about their son in you. What would make this better is if you pay it forward and if you do let us know about it!

[–]different77 1 point2 points ago

i like the trend...repost

[–]Failurbydesign 1 point2 points ago

How cool!

My wife works at PF Changs and had offered her table dessert and they kindly declined, saying they wanted cheese cake from the Cheese Cake Factory. So my wife and the guests chatted for about 5 minutes about how good there selection is. 30 minutes after the table had left, the hostess called her to the front, and those guests bought her a Key Lime Pie cheese cake and thanked her for being so kind. Pretty rad if you ask me!

[–]ydoisayhi 1 point2 points ago

Fellow PF Chang worker here. I find it funny that despite Cheesecake being a different company, PF Changs is always close by to one. Several times I offer dessert, tables instead say they're going to cheesecake. Whatever, cheesecake doesn't have anything on our banana spring rolls. What does your wife think?

P.S. This is a link to one of my favorite tips when I was working there. http://i.imgur.com/FUhul.jpg

[–]reagan2016 1 point2 points ago

It should have been obvious that there was good in this world before somebody gave you $50.

[–]jwtemp1983 1 point2 points ago

Just in time for the Steam Summer Sale!

Yay! :D

[–]co_radio 2 points3 points ago

Not exactly a "random act" as it was premeditated and planned...but a fucking nice act just the same.

[–]musicOcean 0 points1 point ago

The customer must have enjoyed service. Good job.

[–]LiddleBob 0 points1 point ago

Return the favor... Don't put in the tip and write them a thank you!

[–]PurpleChyGuy 0 points1 point ago

Yeah there's still good. All it took was someone's kid to die but there's still hope for humanity guys!

It's a shame that it had to be inspired by the death of their son.

[–]QuadsNotBlades 0 points1 point ago

ugh that breaks my heart.. our son died, and you Michael remind us of him.. take this 50 and make your life better.

[–]lawlulolz 0 points1 point ago

[–]bassplaya899 0 points1 point ago

So... The fuck does the note say?

[–]hey_steve 0 points1 point ago

At least your $50 didn't come with a cryptic cipher and viral marketing.

[–]paperclich3 0 points1 point ago

This brought tears into my eyes.

Nice job folding away the part at the bottom that says "Customer Copy".

FFS people, think before you upvote.

[–]Ezroll 0 points1 point ago

its really nice to have guests like that because we really do try to work for them i mean they pay almost 2/3rds of our pay we only get 2.13 of the federal minimum wage. it kinda sucks when they have to pay so much for food and then pay my wages but i answer to someone who wants to pay me less and charge them more.

[–]madzanta 0 points1 point ago

If money = good. Then the wall street guys must have been misunderstood?

[–]CoastGuarded 0 points1 point ago

The current status of tipping does not make any sense to me. I understand if someone goes beyond the level of service that you could expect, that you might decide to give that person a tip in gratitude for their extreme service... but I can never get behind a tip being expected.

If you are doing your job as a waiter or waitress and you do it extremely well and don't get a tip, then how on earth is that a terrible thing? You are doing your job. I don't see people going out of their way to tip cashiers in stores... aren't they also providing a tippable service? It seems very grubby that the average "server' in restaurants expects a tip, and in not receiving a tip can be upset with the customer. It makes absolutely no sense... even a person who tips and doesn't tip enough is considered rude. Should the person being served ask you for money back if they didn't see you smile when you brought them a drink? It has become too much that tipping is expected.

How about we tip people when we are happy with their extraordinary service.

I realize that an argument may be that servers take the job with the expectation of tips... but if you took a job that is minimum wage.. and are expecting more than what you signed up for on a per/hour basis, then you are a rube.

TL/DR: Tipping should be optional, not expected

Oh, and to the OP... I am really happy for you, I do think tipping is great, I just don't like expectation of something which should be given from a place of gratitude.

[–]oh_okay_ 0 points1 point ago

I once served a family that openly mocked me and threw things at me. When they went to leave the mother whispered, "Go look on the table". No tip, just crayon all over the paper tablecloth with memorials to their deceased loved one. I had no idea what to think - is this your way of justifying treating me like garbage?

[–]Madous 0 points1 point ago

A very sweet gesture, there's no doubt about that. But what does it have to do with their son exactly?

[–]molly_thebarista 0 points1 point ago

Working in an industry where you see the full spectrum of humans and what they are capable of, I've learned that I prefer this side. More so than the tip, the fact that people can come out of their own skin and realize that there are other people in the world and you do effect them. Go have a drink in memory of Joel!

[–]XRedDragonessX 0 points1 point ago

Well this comment thread certainly took an interesting turn...

[–]ZappyKins 0 points1 point ago

Congrats! I did that once to a waitress that was really nice to me and my coworkers. It was the last day I would see here and right after the holidays where I remember some sad drama happening in her life.

I envision she was as happy as you - hope I was right.

[–]public_compliance 0 points1 point ago

I hope the portion of the tip was spent wisely, that's a wonderful gift

[–]kleptobismol 0 points1 point ago

who posted this, the patron or the hostess?
