"Hello, Vandelay Industries? Yes, this is Goat Vandelay."

If they let you go out to a job site on your first day, props to you. Stick with that firm. You can probably get your IDP hours quickly with them.

My dream job is an architect (I'm 15). Is it really that hard?

[–]92RS 2 points3 points ago

If its your dream, do it, but it is probably not what you think it is. From what I've seen as a student in engineering school, it's basically 5 years of art school, and you learn little to nothing about actual engineering. Not only that, but as others have said, it has one of the highest unemployment rates. The professors tend to be stuck up assholes who judge your work on their own opinions.

If you are interested in real engineering, look into civil, structural, mechanical, or electrical. There are some badass fields within those areas.

Wow... as an architecture student I can safely say fuck you. Repeatedly.

I have no idea where you got your (bias and misinformed) perception of us as an art school, but hopefully I can clear some things up.

  • We take timber and steel building construction courses starting in first year, as well as taking the HRAI exam in HVAC class and becoming certified in second year.

  • We enter competitions in those courses starting in first year. These require exploded axos, detailed sections, and often we are required to submit the r value calculations to our profs afterward

  • We learn and start working in AutoCAD and Revit in first year so we don't go into our first co-op with only advanced math courses and theory knowledge

  • We typically work between 60-80 hours a week and over 100 if there is a studio deadline (which requires plans, sections, elevations, renders, construction details, diagrams, a site model, a building model, and whatever else our sadistic professors ask of us. All based on a project which we have had to design ourselves.)

  • We have licensed engineers in our program (iron ring and all) who say they work more hours in architecture school than they had to as a student of engineering

  • If you are in a co-op program, you will have 24 months of experience working in architectural and engineering offices, which should help significantly in your job search (because yes, it is a tough market out there)

My favourite quote describing the relationship between architects and engineers is "Architects need to know something about everything, while engineers need to know everything about something".

I have no quarrel with engineers - you guys as a whole are fantastic, and civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering are badass fields. I have a close friend in all but electrical.

92RS however - perhaps this is just the studio deadline I have in three days talking, but I hope you die slowly and painfully you ignorant son of a bitch.

Thanks, what are some really good colleges for architecture?

[–]ctcougar82 0 points1 point ago

where do you live? I know in the Southeast the best schools are LSU and Miss State

[–]gones 0 points1 point ago

Best in Canada are Waterloo, UBC, and McGill

[–]dspin153 0 points1 point ago

simple answer yes....get yourself a new dream

[–]steveb213 0 points1 point ago

Become a Structural Engineer, you won't want to kill yourself (as much) in college that way.

[–]asadog 0 points1 point ago

You must first become George Costanza

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Alot of them got laid off in the last couple of years and the competition is ridiculous from what I've heard. I know a couple of architects.

[–]EnemyOfEloquence 0 points1 point ago

It's the 11th most studied degree with one of the highest graduating unemployment rates in the field around 10%. I'd say look at something else by just looking at the stats.

[–]jackal858 0 points1 point ago

Possibly by the time you finish a degree (or two) in Architecture, the industry may be back on its feet. Right now, it's terrible. I'd see how the industry is when you're closer to beginning college before making a decision.

[–]gones 0 points1 point ago

(Sorry about the essay I wrote 92RS, I didn't mean it to scare you off) But yes it is pretty damn hard.

Though I should qualify that. It is difficult in that it requires a rather ridiculous amount of time, but this is often spent surrounded by your peers, discussing ideas, sketching, or building models (digital and physical).

If you enjoy that then definitely don't give up on your dream, it's one of the most rewarding university experiences out there (just don't expect to sleep much)

[–]packersfan8512 0 points1 point ago

[–]Guinness_or_thirsty 0 points1 point ago

You really made an fool out of yourself, asshole.

[–]MechaToast 0 points1 point ago

What a jackass...

[–]harrisz2 0 points1 point ago
