"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

check out http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz. you can forsure find help there, maybe even people to group with. there are also tons of videos on youtube for new players.

It takes some getting used to if youre not used to playing sim games, the controls are a little more in depthe then most FPS, but once you'll get it, and then the game is fucking awesome.

Protip, when traveling use 3rd person mode, you see much more, and the left alt key allows you to turn your head, so you can look around while still moving in one direction. its awesome and i wish every fps did it :P

But seriously though, anyone wanna give me a link on how to play this game? Any tips, tricks, guides, etc?

[–]Aptspire 3 points4 points ago

Don't trust anyone.

[–]Valek27 4 points5 points ago

You people are the reason no one trusts anyone. Fuck heads.

The game is survival based so your first goal should be to start securing everything you character needs to survive. Your spawn location will be random, but when you first log in it will type out your location. Your location is important so make sure to study the layout of the land once you know it. You can use internet maps or a map you mind in game to get your bearings. Once you know where you are, start looking for cities or towns nearby. The are several building types which you can enter and find loot. Usually these have windows and working doors. Not every building can be entered so note which types you can go in when you come across them. Your basic surival gear is

  • Food (cans or meat taken from wild game)

  • Water (canteens that can be filled at ponds and pumps, soda cans)

  • Medical supplies (bandages to stop bleeding, morphine for broken bones, painkillers for the shakes, heatpacks for hypothermia)

  • Tools ( hatchet and matches to make fire for warmth, compass and map for navigation, toolbox to fix vehicles and build defenses )

  • Weapons ( pistols and shotguns for killing zombies, rifles for defending against other players )

  • Backpack ( secondary storage, ALICE and Czech bags are good for starters )

You are going to want to find these items as they are vital to progress longer than a few hours. You should store extra consumable items like food, water, and medical supplies incase you encounter a shortage later on. When attempting to find these items, zombies will almost always be nearby. Use stealth to your advantage when avoiding zombies, do not run or sprint around zeds and crawl on your belly if they get too close to avoid. Do not shoot high powered rifles near towns as gunshots draw in zombies. Pistols are much safer, but they will still call in nearby zombies. If you accidently draw in too many zombies, run out of town before fighting them. It is also possible to lose chasing zombies by breaking line of sight and not making noise.

This should cover basic survival. Some other tips, do not trust random survivors you meet along the way. Treat everyone as hostile unless you know them personally, and attempt to avoid being spotted by others. This also means spend as little time as possible in major cities because player encounters are more frequent there. This game is best played with friends so if you know someone else, join skype and try to meet up in game. Finally, check out some of the maps and guides on r/dayz for more indepth info on surivival in DayZ

dude thank you for this!

No tears, only dreams.

First, it's a lot better with friends. With that being said. Learn the inventory system/movement/hotkeys. It's pretty unintuitive at first. As for what you actually should be doing? That's up to you. You start on the beach, generally near a town. You need to forage for food/water weapons. Head to elektro or cherno (the two cities closest to the beach spawns) to find tools like a map/compass/better guns/backpack. After you have this stuff? Most people like to head up north to find real military loot or vehicles. There are guides on the dayz forums or on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jomblcz531c Is a pretty good one.

/r/dayzlfg is for people looking for buds to team up with, most people in the game are pretty hostile if you don't know them.

/r/Dayz is pretty bad, mostly just screenshots and crappy RP.

this is great thanks!

[–]nowatermelonnokfc -3 points-2 points ago

okay. here's what you do - you run around checking for open buildings. about 1/5 of buildings are enterable. you enter the buildings and look for supplies.

that's it. be prepared to not have fun, DayZ is very overhyped. it's actually incredibly buggy and boring

[–]stylepoints99 0 points1 point ago

It's not overhyped, it's a blast for people who can make their own fun. Think minecraft. Expecting a bug free alpha is begging for disappointment.

[–]erycstrife[S] 0 points1 point ago

this does seem kinda true

Do you need arma II to play it?

[–]stylepoints99 0 points1 point ago

Arma 2 and operation arrowhead, sold together as arma 2 combined operations. You can use a free version of arma 2 with a regular copy of arrowhead, but the textures are low quality.

[–]purplegoalie1 0 points1 point ago

i think im just going to wait until the combined operations goes on sale and get it then

[–]stylepoints99 0 points1 point ago

it is on sale! not a big special though, combined ops right now is $24 instead of $30

[–]purplegoalie1 0 points1 point ago

Yeah but im betting that its going to go on further sale

[–]stylepoints99 0 points1 point ago

For sure. I hope it goes on a big sale so we can get more people playing.

[–]purplegoalie1 0 points1 point ago

yeah i really want to play it, but its too expensive =(

[–]time_traveller_ 0 points1 point ago

It seems kind of horrible that people are buying Arma II just for a mod that isn't even finished yet... Arma II is awesome on it's own...

[–]purplegoalie1 0 points1 point ago

Well I'm downloading the demo right now let's see if it's fun or even better yet can I run it

[–]time_traveller_ 0 points1 point ago

Oh man, it's a military simulator and somehow it's great fun... I remember the first time I played it, I got in the helicopter at base just as it was taking off, managed to help in capturing a town, but I was taking my time looking at the village and my team left me because I wasn't paying attention by the time we had won, I found a car and it took me about an hour to drive back to base.

And it's sort of helpful to know beforehand that you can turn your head with L. Alt, lower your weapon by double tapping Ctrl, and you can salute with the #~ key I think... or whatever that key is in your part of the country, the lower button to the left of the return key.

[–]purplegoalie1 0 points1 point ago

that sounds awesome unfourtantly my computer cant handle it =( i tried the demo and it was really laggy at low settings ='(

[–]time_traveller_ 0 points1 point ago

Dammit. Oh well... I heard it's not very well optimised. What's worse is DayZ is far laggier than regular ol' Arma II.

[–]purplegoalie1 0 points1 point ago

yeah then there is no way ill be able to play it on my computer =(
