Lenticular clouds over Mount Rainier

[–]Foxhound199 22 points23 points ago

Means it will rain within 24 hours, though that's not exactly a bold weather prediction for Seattle.

[–]DaddyDanceParty 13 points14 points ago

After years, I've deduced that when the sun rises in the east, and when I take a shit in the morning, it will rain within the next 24 hours 60% of the time, every time.

[–]rainyseattleasshole 5 points6 points ago

I feel obligated to make a joke too...

[–]Chubtoaster 4 points5 points ago

I'm not gonna lie, that smells like pure gasoline.

[–]bradco 0 points1 point ago

Also means you might not want to fly too close. It its generally a first sign of turbulence in the weather community. However I find it fairly unreliable in Colorado as we get it on the front range quite a bit without any reports of bumps from the pilots

[–]smguy101 0 points1 point ago

Weather in Colorado is generally unreliable. It could be clear and 60 one minute and snowing the next.

[–]jubydoo 0 points1 point ago

Is it really that bad? I've known a number of people who have come here to Kansas and said they thought the weather was erratic where they came from but it didn't even compare to here.

As an explanation: over Kansas we get the collision of two major weather patterns. As warm moist air comes over the Rockies it cools, drops its moisture on the far side of the continental divide, then comes rushing down the slopes to become wind in Kansas. We get some pretty nasty wind here -- nothing to really slow it down for hundreds of miles.

On the other hand, warm, moist air comes up from the Gulf of Mexico. I know less about the dynamics of this.

The net result is cool, dry, fast-moving air meets warm, moist, sluggish air.

So the weather on any particular day really depends on which of the patterns is stronger on that day.

A double lenticular cloud, something not often seen.

[–]lux_coepi 0 points1 point ago

whereabouts did you take it from, Puyallup? farther south?

[–]jdeliverer 1 point2 points ago

Puyallup sounds like a southern expression. Who pu' y'all up to it?

[–]Wesa 6 points7 points ago

Pew-allup.

Add in Issaquah, Sequim, and Yakima for some other fun city names round here.

[–]Schnoor 11 points12 points ago

It's funny having been born and raised in Washington because pronouncing these is absolutely no problem, lol.

[–]vatothe0 0 points1 point ago

I wish I could upboat more than once....

[–]Wesa 0 points1 point ago

Lol yup! For the longest time though (I'm from Oregon, moved here in '97), I thought Sequim and Sequim (pronounced See-Quee-Um) were 2 different towns.

[–]jcatleather 0 points1 point ago

I grew up there, we call it pee-eu-allup :) Gotta love the anglicized native names :D

[–]Wesa 0 points1 point ago

Grew up in Oregon, maybe thats the difference :P

[–]dsn0wman 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget Walla Walla

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

Oooo, we're going to do funny PNW place names?

Yachats, Scio, Champoeg (I dare you to pronounce that correctly), Aloha (you won't get that one right, either), Tillamook, Rhododendron, Zig Zag, Boring, Drain, Plush, Paisley, Wankers Corner, Idiotville (I shit you not), Humptulips, Klickitat, and I'm sure more but I'm tired.

[–]jubydoo 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to take a crack at this. I'll probably be wrong, but I welcome the correction:

Yachats: yah-shats

Scio: see-oh

Chamopoeg: Sha-moe-pug

Aloha: al-oh-hah

[–]Osiris32 1 point2 points ago

Nope, not a single one.

Yachats: Ya-hats

Scio: Sigh-oh

Champoeg: Sham-poo-ee (right? WTF?)

Aloha: Uh-lo-uh

Go Renton!

[–]drocks 0 points1 point ago

When I worked for budget truck rental... on a call to one of our inventory managers told me hold one while I pull yall up.

Edit: I Lived in Puyallup for 9 years

[–]Radicou 0 points1 point ago

I doubt the OP knows, someone else might though!

Edit: Internet says it's Puyallup.

[–]drocks 0 points1 point ago

A friend posted almost this same picture recently on facebook who lives in Puyallup, so I am guessing thats where it is.

[–]jcatleather 1 point2 points ago

Its too close for puyallup, it is somewhere a little higher, such as perhaps Eatonville or Graham

[–]drocks 0 points1 point ago

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jgpics/68333250/in/gallery-utahimages-72157629093772322/ if this is in fact his picture.. it says it was taken from his home in puyallup

[–]jcatleather 0 points1 point ago

I suppose it could be, properly cropped and such. Maybe South Hill? Lots of people consider Graham to be Puyallup too. Not that it matters- its an awesome pic. I miss that mountain!

[–]count_0 0 points1 point ago

Puyallup actually stretches pretty far out along Canyon, so it could easily be Puyallup.

[–]jcatleather 1 point2 points ago

up to about 176th...

[–]ImSofaKingWeToddit 0 points1 point ago

Looks like op took a screenshot of that pic - notice how the submission is slightly pixelated.

[–]pinchhazard 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a different angle than you usually get from urban Puget Sound.

[–]CardboardHeatshield 0 points1 point ago

I was in Portland for two weeks, and the only sunny day we got, I tried to get Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Rainier on film in the same day. Ranier was the one that I didn't get to before sundown. But it is beautiful!

[–]sherideswildhorses 0 points1 point ago

There was a rare spectacularly clear day last year I believe when st Helen's, rainier & baker were all visible from the Seattle area.

[–]djplumking 2 points3 points ago

Depends on how high up you are if you can see all three.

On the other side of the Cascades, being able to see Rainier and Helens almost right next to each other is pretty cool... from a wetsider's perspective.

[–]sherideswildhorses 0 points1 point ago

I meant from Seattle proper. Sorry I wasn't clear.

[–]CardboardHeatshield 0 points1 point ago

Whoa, that would be awesome! I could see St. Helens and Hood as I was driving between then, and there was one off in the distance that I thought was Rainier, but after looking at the maps I think it was Mt. Adams.

[–]clevesteam 0 points1 point ago

I got ranier, adams, hood and st. Helens on film from the top of st. Helens

[–]amolad 0 points1 point ago

[–]GiantWhaleCannon 4 points5 points ago

That really is Death Mountain. Harder to climb than Everest.

[–]buttez 11 points12 points ago

True dat, but they both pale in comparison to Annapurna. Everest kills about 5%, K2 kills 25%, Annapurna kills 38% of those morons who try.

And by morons, I mean incredibly experienced mountaineers with great skills. Not the grannies and children they short-rope up Everest.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Not the grannies and children they short-rope up Everest.

I mean, yes there is a lot more support on Everest, but your statement there may be a BIT of a stretch.

[–]ChillFratBro 0 points1 point ago

You need to be in shape, for sure. You can't be a total bumpkin. But, you need no real prior decision-making experience to climb Everest. You rent out the thinking to someone else, in most cases.

Most of the deaths this past season on Everest can be attributed to those who didn't turn around when they should have -- and this is because they paid someone else rather than developing their own mountain sense.

I'm a climber, but I don't climb guided. Rather than doing that, I invest time and money into being able to make my own decisions that will keep me safe. It takes longer. It's more difficult. But I'm also a contributing member of a team if I go on an expedition. That's something a lot of Everest climbers aren't.

They pay sherpas to carry their shit. Sherpas establish camps. People cook for them.

That doesn't fucking count. Half of the work in climbing a mountain is pitching camp, cooking, melting water. You don't do that part, sure, it's intense physical activity. But it sure as shit ain't alpinism.

[–]johnmul 0 points1 point ago

Any idea on what the death rate is on Aconcagua?

[–]ChillFratBro 0 points1 point ago

Pretty low. If you're a moron, the altitude can kill you. If you're an even bigger moron, you could die of cold. If you choose to attempt a technical route, then you're dealing with the same problems you would on any other major mountain, but not to an appalling degree.

Aconcagua, by its easiest route, is non-technical. If you're not a moron, you'll survive Aconcagua, maybe not summit, but survive. You can do everything right, and K2 or Annapurna will still kill your ass dead.

[–]johnmul 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. These are all things I know, but have been looking for actual death rates. I have seen websites refer to it having a high death rate (higher than Denali which is much more technical), but haven't seen specific stats. Yes, most deaths are attributed to folks underestimating it because it has a rep of being easy specifically because it is non technical, so they don't take it seriously and get in trouble with HAPE. I'm curious as I am planning on climbing it this Jan.

[–]ChillFratBro 1 point2 points ago

Part of the death rate can be attributed to the fact that it's in Argentina, not the US. The rescue support on Denali is unparalleled for a mountain of that size, mostly because of the NPS climbing rangers.

To my knowledge, the only country with a more reliable rescue system for their mountains is France in the Alps -- and those mountains are shorter & much closer to civilization, rather than expedition-style peaks in bumfuck nowhere, Alaska.

Now, some people abuse this system. It's not a safety net in a "they'll pluck me off the mountain if I call" way, and I don't for a second mean to suggest that. Never expect a rescue in the mountains. However, there are some people who, by rights, should have died that the rangers manage to save. Aconcagua doesn't have that support, nor do Himalayan peaks. Climbers sometimes mobilize to rescue others, but there's no official infrastructure for it. They're trying to build a system on Everest that's based on Denali's system (there's a great article in Outside mag. about that), but it's a ways off complete.

My biggest statement about climbing Aconcagua would be, don't be afraid to turn back. There is zero shame in saying that this just wasn't your year. You can live to climb again if you turn around when you could have summitted. You won't climb again if you don't turn around when you should.

Ed Viesturs, the most accomplished American climber in history, is famous for saying that he doesn't count a summit unless it was accompanied by a successful descent. An appalling number of accidents happen during the descent, because people 'check out' mentally, thinking they've done the hard part.

I don't want to sound like I'm on a high horse. I'm sure you're eminently capable of keeping yourself safe without my 2 cents. I'm saying this in case someone who's curious about getting in to the sport reads this thread, so they can know more.

[–]Fidel_Catstro 0 points1 point ago

TIL Only "morons" die on mountain climbing expeditions.

[–]ChillFratBro -1 points0 points ago

Nope, not what I said. The objective hazards on Aconcagua are fairly nonexistent. The easiest route does not involve a glacier, or technical rock climbing. The weather is rarely so bad that you can't descend if you have altitude issues. It's not so brutally cold that it can't be mitigated with proper self-care.

The subjective hazards, however, are that you underestimate the mountain and let yourself get out of hand. You don't turn around when you get AMS, you don't stop to layer up, you don't take care of yourself.

I'm an alpinist. I've nearly died a few times in the mountains. I'm acutely aware that it's possible to do everything right and die, or for little things to pile up. But, Aconcagua is comparatively safe, and the vast majority of deaths can be attributed to poor decision-making.

[–]ChillFratBro 0 points1 point ago

Annapurna doesn't kill 38% who try. For every 1 person who summits, 0.38 will die. Also, this takes into account pre-1990. In the modern period, the death rate is 1 death per 5 summits.

To be clear, it's a dangerous fucking mountain. But, since 1990, Kanchenjunga is deadlier, at 22%; and Annapurna is on par with K2, both at 19.7%.

Source: Primarily Wikipedia.

[–]buttez 0 points1 point ago

Ja, I was unclear about that. It's incredibly frustrating finding anything other than rough estimates for the attempt numbers, so there ya go.

[–]ChillFratBro 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, attempt numbers are hard. Do you count porters who never intended to summit? Do you count those who are socked in low on the mountain for the full time? Do you count people who 'nope' the fuck out of there early, etc.?

The generally quoted statistic is that for every 36 people who go above base camp on an 8000 meter peak, one dies. This is somewhat meaningless, as comparing Cho Oyu or Shishampangma to K2 or Makalu is a bit of a stretch, in terms of who attempts them and what the risks are.

The eight-thousanders are an incredibly diverse group, and it's damn hard to get true statistics. If you're interested, look up Elizabeth Hawley and her expedition database. She's chronicled Himalayan climbing for years, and while she's a journalist, not a statistician, her raw data is without compare.
