There are three great things about this:

1) #7's non-catch

2) #12's reaction

3) the slide

[–]styxman34 141 points142 points ago

The slide to first base.

[–]emajae 3 points4 points ago

Really - it's more like the hop-right-over-first-base-grab for first base

[–]rarisgod 3 points4 points ago

I don't get it, why is this significant?

[–]CarbonatedPizza 124 points125 points ago

You can run through first base, sliding is counterproductive.

[–]apextek 84 points85 points ago

but when your a kid you so badly want to slide into every base

[–]rebelpride 8 points9 points ago

when you're an adult you so badly want to slide into every base

[–]apextek 11 points12 points ago

it so reminds me of a story from baseball when I was a kid. THere was this girl on the other team I had a crush on and wanted to get her attention. I don't remember where I thought of it or why I would think its cool. But I ran my bases in a way to make the heel of my foot hit my ass as I ran.

I was big on comedy so I guess I was hoping she would think Im funny and talk to me. My father was mortified. On the drive home "what the hell is wrong with you? you were like a genuine turkey on that field?"

It was in that moment of my 8 year old life it all dawned on me, I had this all wrong, that being a schmuck wasn't going to get me friends or girls, just made me a schmuck.

[–]Chazzey_dude 2 points3 points ago

I'm glad you were enlightened. Once you're in a relationship, then you can be a schmuck.

[–]rebelpride 2 points3 points ago

I have no idea how this relates to sliding into all the bases, but that was an excellent story. Upvotes for you.

[–]apextek 1 point2 points ago

because when i was done running like an ass, I would slide into base no matter what.

[–]vidus 0 points1 point ago

Unless the field is gravel. Then you bleed.

[–]claudesoph 6 points7 points ago

*you're

[–]illtriniboy 16 points17 points ago

and so are you!

[–]rarisgod 2 points3 points ago

Why can you run through first base?

[–]purple_ocelot 31 points32 points ago

I'm going to assume you like soccer. As long as you run straight through the base then you cannot be tagged out. If you make a motion to run to second then you can be tagged. This is so the batter doesn't have to slow down and stop on the bag.

[–]kewidogg 9 points10 points ago

I would imagine it's also for safety, as there would often be sliding into first base

[–]purple_ocelot 6 points7 points ago

It is technically allowed after little league (after 13 years old) in most leagues. All professional and school teams allow it. It's just a lot faster to run through the bag so nobody does.

[–]kewidogg 5 points6 points ago

Right, there's no rule against it, I'm just saying it may be a safer option to allow running through 1st.

[–]flyingthroughspace 4 points5 points ago

Sliding into a base is to avoid being tagged. There would be no sliding into first. Ever.

[–]solsethop 1 point2 points ago

that was actually wonderfully interesting. better than most sports announcers.

[–]ShinichiChiba 0 points1 point ago

This game was like a week ago, suuuuch a good game.

[–]irndk10 9 points10 points ago

Not entirely true. There are certainly instances where sliding into first is warranted. People occasionally slide head first into first on close plays, because they feel it's a split second faster (it's debated if it actually is). Another instance is if a throw draws the first baseman off the bag and towards home. In this instance a tag is the first baseman's only play. A slide could be used by the runner to avoid the tag.

Also, sliding isn't just to avoid a tag. Slides are also used to stop without slowing down. For example, a runner's on first and the batter bunts. The pitcher then throws to second to get the lead runner. The lead runner will slide into second to stop not to avoid tag. If he didn't, he would either over run the bag and get tagged out, or have to slow down too much prior to reaching the bag, wasting time.

[–]ace_to_mouth 1 point2 points ago

you occasionally see sliding into first in the majors, just not very often.

[–]slicwilli 0 points1 point ago

unless, of course, you are going back to first to avoid being picked off by the pitcher while leading off, or to tag up after a catch. The comments in this thread make me believe I'm one of the only baseball fans on Reddit.

Edit:"leading off" is when you are already on a base and someone else is at bat. You can step off the base toward the next base at your own risk. The pitcher may attempt to throw you out instead of pitching to the batter. "Tagging up" is when you are on base and the ball is hit and caught by the defense. You must return to the base you came from before advancing or you may be thrown out at that base.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

as long as you run straight through the base into foul territory, that is

[–]purple_ocelot 0 points1 point ago

Nope, this is a common misconception. The runner just can't make an attempt to go to second. The umpire is the judge of that.

[–]elliot430 0 points1 point ago

can you run through second and third?

[–]purple_ocelot 0 points1 point ago

No, if you do then you can be tagged out.

[–]slicwilli 0 points1 point ago

When you hit the ball you want to run as fast as you can to first to avoid being thrown out. With most hits you will not be able to advance to second base if you even make it to first safely(safely as in not out, not safely as in not dangerous). If you're running at full speed it would be unsafe(as in dangerous) to suddenly stop at the bag(bag is another word for base). So, if you know you won't be advancing to second base you can run full speed, step on the bag, and continue running, slowing down gradually and safely(both meanings).

[–]Mike_McDee 2 points3 points ago

There are times where sliding into first base is warranted, that is if you have the instinct or heads up to do so. e.g. to avoid a tag on a high or wide throw.

[–]trooti2 0 points1 point ago

It is not necessary or even a good idea to slide into first off a hit. As a batter you just need to tag the base, so run as fast as you can and tag the base as you run past it.

[–]cianobiwan 0 points1 point ago

The slide over first base.

[–]drmrsanta 0 points1 point ago

The jump slide!

[–]Im_not_the_cops 0 points1 point ago

and why is he wearing a helmet in the infield?

[–]RedsoxFan42 0 points1 point ago

That is the first thing i saw. But it wouldnt protect him in any way because the face of a helmet is open

[–]Sine_Metu 17 points18 points ago

4) Helmet on fielder.

[–]mpavlofsky 6 points7 points ago

I'm guessing he's the pitcher, and the helmet is to protect him in case of a line drive back at him. Those aluminum bats can really pop the ball, and the pitcher may not be ready for it.

[–]countchocula86 1 point2 points ago

vestibule

[–]jackedbeats 0 points1 point ago

coming from some one who was a pitcher from age 11 to 17 and got knocked out twice by line drives. yeah a helmet would be awesome. better yet a face mask.

[–]modern_warfare_1 15 points16 points ago

You forgot the actual play. That was awesome for a little kid.

Hell I know a lot of people my age who couldn't have stopped that.

[–]upwithwhich 8 points9 points ago

...and I'm probably one of them. Now that I look at it again, #12's got some great hand-eye coordination! He was right to be frustrated...

[–]modern_warfare_1 4 points5 points ago

That's what I'm sayin' lol! Kid's gonna be a beast when he gets older.

[–]Carambar 8 points9 points ago

7 watches the first kid run then goes back to day dreaming.

12 makes a perfect catch and pass, and only when he's done throwing the ball with a perfect stance does he notices the receiver doesn't give a fuck. After a moment of despair, he kicks the ground with contained anger.

7 run after the ball but some other kid is faster than him.

I missed the bunnyhop-slide. Thanks bro.

[–]df619 1 point2 points ago

That's what I noticed. The 2B had a lot more hustle to get to the ball.

[–]HeathenAntics 2 points3 points ago

Not to mention the great cover by the right fielder.

[–]sterling_mallory 2 points3 points ago

In seriousness though, gotta love #11's hustle.

[–]ace_invader 1 point2 points ago

Really hoped 12 was gonna throw his glove on the ground ala Nyjer Morgan

[–]ronintetsuro 1 point2 points ago

Didn't see the slide.

Thanks for making me almost pee myself at my desk.

[–]BoldElDavo 1 point2 points ago

Even better, I liked the fact that #12's throw was pretty bad. Kinda bounced past #7's feet.

[–]someones_dog 1 point2 points ago

That kid sliding looks like Darth Vader.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]ducastheslayer 55 points56 points ago

When i played there was a position called pitchers helper who was required to have a helmet. It was in the age group where the coaches pitched to the kids. The coaches couldn't field a ball so they had a little kid stand next to him.

[–]thyyoungclub 13 points14 points ago

They're little, and sometimes they make them wear helmets if they're close to the batters. There was a girl on my local little league team who took a line-drive to the face and wore a helmet after that during games.

[–]eulerfoiler 9 points10 points ago

Good for her for continuing to play baseball after that! Line-drive to the face is pretty much the worst case scenario.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Also getting hit in the face with a pitch.

[–]ncocca 1 point2 points ago

And this is why I was a terrible batter. I was just constantly afraid of getting hit by the pitch. I'm a wuss.

[–]ubersaurus 1 point2 points ago

I got hit twice in the face in the same week. I quit after that season. Later I found out my vision had gotten worse, and I just needed a new prescription.

(Oh and the scenario: assistant coach throwing curveballs during batting practice.)

[–]ncocca 0 points1 point ago

Your assistant coach was a douchebag it seems

[–]ubersaurus 0 points1 point ago

Yes. I've never seen someone make his own son feel so bad all the time. But damn was his daughter hot.

[–]Propolandante 0 points1 point ago

[–]riggsinator 0 points1 point ago

I got a line drive to the cock-n-balls. No bueno.

[–]soxy 2 points3 points ago

Little leagues use metal bats, which generate higher velocity hits when compared to wood bats.

It's for safety in the case of hard comebackers.

[–]Strahz 2 points3 points ago

You know exactly why.

[–]khdutton 48 points49 points ago

You're killing me, Smalls! ಠ_ಠ

[–]cptjmshook 8 points9 points ago

[–]BillThePenguin 8 points9 points ago

How did you get a gif of me playing little league as a kid?

[–]zodar 1 point2 points ago

...and that's why I played right field.

[–]Cheshire057 0 points1 point ago

Is it really you? Because it could be me.

[–]Cheshire057 0 points1 point ago

Is it really you? Because it could be me.

[–]hinduguru 14 points15 points ago

All his fucks stayed in his pocket

[–]NoSubrannke 6 points7 points ago

This was me as a kid. I was also the kid who sat around picking grass on the soccer field. And I was the kid who never made a free throw in basketball. Thank God I found music.

[–]yoordoengitrong 1 point2 points ago

OMG GET OUT OF MY HEAD.

[–]mnemonie 0 points1 point ago

This is me now, playing softball. It's alarmingly fun. Still can't catch anything, though.

[–]theofficialposter 5 points6 points ago

I was totally that kid...

[–]criticalnegation 238 points239 points ago

baseball is so boring, the people playing can barely pay attention :\

[–]TheHag 58 points59 points ago

8 year olds tend not to pay attention to anything. Especially when it's a bunch of kids who are terrible at baseball, baseball is awesome when the people can actually play. All the people I know who don't like it, played it when they were like 6, no shit it was boring, so is 6 year old basketball.

[–]fapperontheroof 18 points19 points ago

I remember being an outfielder at that age (where the horribly unskilled players go since not many baseballs get hit that far) and I'd basically just pick grass all day.

[–]ealexhall 12 points13 points ago

One time I just decided I had to pee, so I did. Covered my dick up with my mitt and just pissed in the outfield.

[–]KingNick 5 points6 points ago

I played with the dirt clumps! Crushing them in my hand and washing my hands in sand like a motherfucking Gladiator....then I would throw said clumps at the other team when they ran by

[–]albertscoot 2 points3 points ago

Wow, that sucks. I played for a city team in hs and boy did it suck playing right when the center couldn't catch anything.

[–]LaJollaJim 1 point2 points ago

I chewed my fingernails and looked for 4 leaf clovers.

[–]ronintetsuro 6 points7 points ago

Pretty sure 6 year old Indy racing will get someone's attention.

[–]zip99 3 points4 points ago

There's only one way to learn....!

[–]BeneficiaryOtheDoubt 1 point2 points ago

But basketball is actually fun for 6 year olds. You're constantly moving around

[–]peachesgp 6 points7 points ago

Doesn't mean they're paying attention though. I referee youth football that goes anywhere from 8-13 year olds. I can promise you that with the youngest group, they may be running around, but that doesn't mean they're actually paying any attention at all.

[–]BeneficiaryOtheDoubt 2 points3 points ago

I didn't say it's fun for the adults watching, just the kids playing.

[–]peachesgp 2 points3 points ago

They're having fun because they're kids and kids like to run around. It doesn't mean they like playing football because they're really not, they're just arbitrarily running around. It's just that sometimes they have a ball while running around. Kind of like little kids playing basketball. They don't know the rules or what's actually happening, they just like running around.

[–]Snoogliebear 9 points10 points ago

What I want to know is why the hell he had a helmet on when he is obviously not on the batting team?...

[–]drmrsanta 4 points5 points ago

Overprotective parents? Maybe the "pitcher" wears one (although I'd be surprised if this isn't T-ball)?

I like the kid at the end that jump/slides into first.

[–]mac04498 2 points3 points ago

From tball through machine pitch the pitcher wears a helmet. Once they reach the age to where they can actually pitch, they stop wearing the helmet.

[–]kameelyan 2 points3 points ago

Confirmed. I also hit a kid in the head twice in one game playing t-ball. Then again when I switched to machine pitching. Then again when it switched to real pitching. Then we moved and I never played baseball again.

[–]Crustycrustacean 0 points1 point ago

Is this a new thing? I'm only 25 and I don't remember this at all growing up.

[–]derrman 0 points1 point ago

They are the "pitcher" who stands behind the coach with the pitching machine. They (the pitchers) are only 46 feet away when the other kids are at least 60 feet away.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

rover position during teeball or auto pitch. kid is pretty close so they give him a helmet

[–]BulkVanderhuge 1 point2 points ago

This looks like a "kid pitch" league which is awful. The kids almost NEVER get the ball across the plate or throw strikes. The kids at bat almost never hit the ball. It's basically a series of walks and strike outs by kids who swing at bad pitches. So for everyone BUT the pitcher and catcher and batter to be paying attention is pretty common. Kid pitch at that age is atrociously boring. Machine pitch or coach pitch allows for more involvement by all the kids.

[–]DirtPile 0 points1 point ago

Yes, because no one pays attention in MLB.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

The slide kills me. He doesn't even initiate until after the base.

[–]wtfOP 2 points3 points ago

i love how the kid slid in

[–]Mojo_Rising 7 points8 points ago

You had one job number 7!!!

[–]holymojo96 1 point2 points ago

I sat here for five minutes trying to figure out why I tagged you as "eskmo" and then I felt like an idiot.

[–]mofontes 4 points5 points ago

Shit, the first baseman is exactly me, except when I played in high school.

[–]Kinny195 1 point2 points ago

BREAKING NEWS: Arsene Wenger signs this competitive young lad!

...wait, wrong sport.

[–]strobexp 1 point2 points ago

yah that was me when i was younger

[–]LeftyBigGuns 1 point2 points ago

Was that Bobby Hill playing 1st base?

[–]dannymannyboy 1 point2 points ago

Clearly the slide into first was needed

[–]imapiratedammit 1 point2 points ago

Im sure im not alone when i say i was probably the guy not paying attention when i was in little league

[–]Irish_Confetti 1 point2 points ago

I was always the kid not watching. Always. I use to put my glove on my face and spin around in right field. My baseball career and my father's pride in me were both short lived.

[–]nomdeanon 1 point2 points ago

This was me all through-out T-ball and little-league baseball. Half the time I had my face in the mitt to look at the sun through the finger slits. Or I'm staring at the little swarm of insects above my head, etc.

[–]Mr_Quagmire 1 point2 points ago

How'd you get a gif of me when I played little league???

[–]notjawn 1 point2 points ago

I danced in the outfield.

[–]Monso 1 point2 points ago

I KNOW THAT FEEL BRO

[–]knobbysideup 1 point2 points ago

Why'd they put calvin at first base? They usually let him daydream out in left field!

[–]BrunoPonceJones 1 point2 points ago

Haven't seen anybody mention the first runner at the beginning of the clip. Maybe the 1st baseman assumed the play was at second, and wasn't paying attention. Doesn't excuse him completely, but he may not be at fault here.

[–]cyclicamp 1 point2 points ago

Devil's advocate to your devil's advocate, it could have been a 2 out situation, 1st base would be the better play.

[–]Shamson 1 point2 points ago

I got kicked off my T-ball team when I was a kid because the guy on first base would put his glove over his face every time you threw him the ball. One day I punched him in the face.

[–]rbldragon 1 point2 points ago

Exactly how I feel when someone completely misses a joke I make.

[–]Slushy515 0 points1 point ago

Sadly to admit, that was me in Little League years ago. I was in the outfield zoning out all the time.

[–]neotropic9 0 points1 point ago

I feel like this almost every time I play League of Legends.

[–]Lateon 0 points1 point ago

I'd be pissed too haha...wtf are you doing on a baseball field if you don't want to play?

[–]coyote1284 0 points1 point ago

Daddy dragged him to try-outs and got him on a team, then to practices and games... just like all us other losers who identify with the kid.

[–]CivEZ 0 points1 point ago

[–]YouJagaloon 0 points1 point ago

I was the one receiving the throw.

[–]Untz234 0 points1 point ago

This makes me sad because thats who I was when I was 7

[–]rarisgod 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me too much of me playing baseball as a kid. No I didn't just stand there, when I actually did try, and failed, I'd get the same reaction from my "teammates". I was so bad and the discouraging behaviour I saw from the other players is what probably made me not want to even bother with sports.

[–]idonutcare 0 points1 point ago

"hey! what the heck??? DOG GUMMIT!"

[–]booptothebeep 0 points1 point ago

This is how I played sports.

[–]Heretic3e7 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of more than one of my former jobs.

[–]Runyn 0 points1 point ago

Fuck that kid, seriously. The kid got pissed for a good reason. That other kid was an imbecile.

[–]Demoorelizer 0 points1 point ago

I hated this when I played little league baseball. Best way to correct it? Throw it as hard as you can at their face.

[–]Lazerus42 0 points1 point ago

Why is that kid wearing a batting helmet and throwing the ball? HE'S OUT, HE'S OUT!

[–]cmilla 0 points1 point ago

Don't think I have ever seen such a young kid use the "dafuq" hand gesture.

[–]Beaver420 0 points1 point ago

Geez this just reminds me of the multitude of embarrassing moments I had playing baseball as a kid. The worst was during a teeball game when I was playing the outfield. The ball pops up I go to catch it, but the sun blocks my view so I miss the ball. The ball is nowhere to be found. We have 3 or 4 other players trying to find it. As the the batter continues to run to home the ball falls out of my sleeve. I never heard so much laughter.

[–]bernie16wb 0 points1 point ago

Why is the pitcher wearing a helmet?

[–]tebu810 0 points1 point ago

How old is this? I think this may have been me.

[–]Splazoinka 0 points1 point ago

That's exactly how I feel about baseball.

[–]honeybunny123 0 points1 point ago

Can't blame his reaction. I just hear a kid yelling "What the fuck?! I threw it right to you! Dammit!!"

[–]duQ_ 0 points1 point ago

how playing dota feels like

I can imagine this clip appearing on "America's Funniest Home Videos." At least the comments are way better and there's no canned laughter this way.

Proof that baseball is even boring to the players.

[–]corporaterightsmvmnt 0 points1 point ago

I like that kid's wtf expression.

[–]jack104 0 points1 point ago

That kid reminds me of this little shithead that plays on my 11 year old brothers team. The kid is a great ball player but a complete asshole who doesn't try unless he gets to pitch. Last game the coach had him play catcher and because little shithead was throwing a hissy fit over not pitching, he overthrew the ball back to the pitcher, the runner on third scored and they lost the game. Granted they were already down by 6 runs but that is neither here nor there, it's still the principal of the matter. It's kids like that that make me never want to procreate on the off chance I spawn a little shithead like him.

I play right field

its important you know

you gotta know how to catch

you gotta know how to throw

that's why I play in right field

way out where the dandelions grow

[–]mbr2321 0 points1 point ago

this was my childhood.

[–]zip99 0 points1 point ago

Looked like a bad throw anyway!

[–]ratbastid 0 points1 point ago

When I was in first grade, one day, we were playing kickball. For non Americans or people unfamiliar, it's basically baseball, but played with a big rubber ball that is "bowled" toward the "kicker" rather than a baseball that is pitched toward a batter.

I was on second base zoning out. At some point I noticed a kid running past me really fast. Turned out he was the kid who had just kicked. While he ran, I stood there on second instead of running to third, and he lapped me.

After consulting the rules, I was deemed "out". Also "lame".

[–]another-social-freak 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone see the runner on first that took off in the first .01 seconds of the gif? First baseman was likely distracted by that. Still agree with the pitcher's frustration, though.

[–]NamelessPurity 0 points1 point ago

Why does the pitcher have a helmet on?

[–]awwende 0 points1 point ago

Clearly this is for the special Olympics. Why else would the kid throwing the ball be wearing a helmet?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Haha, #7 would have been me. I barely paid attention during games and actually squatted and played in the sand instead.

[–]rebelpride 0 points1 point ago

Fuck you, thats how baseball always goes for me

[–]gradeahonky 0 points1 point ago

I was the number 7 of any sports team I was on.

[–]trouttfish 0 points1 point ago

I can admit that I was #7 until I was about 15 and made my mother believe that I wasn't going to be a baseball superstar she always wanted.

[–]sailingonward 0 points1 point ago

the kid throwing the ball represents a typical day at work for me

[–]dylan_produkt 0 points1 point ago

There's always that kid that was forced to sign up for baseball and just stands there.

[–]HypnoticONE 0 points1 point ago

Why is the pitcher wearing a batting helmet?

[–]xXxTrollxXx 0 points1 point ago

And number 11 with the speed of a thousand galloping horses

[–]tibean2992 0 points1 point ago

This kid is going to be the asshole who takes gym class too seriously in high school.

[–]tailgrab 0 points1 point ago

Eye contact, if not, call the fucking name. #1 lesson

[–]phamnuwen92 0 points1 point ago

Does anybody else think #12 looks like a little Peyton Manning? The sour face and the massive forehead...

[–]RedsoxFan42 0 points1 point ago

I remember that age. Sliding was the shit. Now its more of a hassle hah

[–]DutchessTheSolipsist 0 points1 point ago

Clearly, he saw a way more important lady bug then his little league game in which no one win and everyone is a winner.

[–]abom420 0 points1 point ago

....What the fuck man....GODDAMMIT BEN!

[–]uller999 0 points1 point ago

My opinion on baeball is that it's the ultimate spectators' sport. You don't watch it for the gear grinding action like MMA or basketball. You watch it as a pastime. You go get a hot dog, a beer, and you chill out for a few hours with your Dad and argue strategy and stats while sitting there. I did that with my father at Red Sox games, and it was some of the best childhood moments I had.

[–]mtux96 0 points1 point ago

He should feel bad for that bad throw that he threw.

[–]3D_bartholomew 0 points1 point ago

Allan?

[–]blobok123 0 points1 point ago

Where the hell is e hiding all of those fucks?

[–]bigboyjackson 0 points1 point ago

the best part is how the kid is wearing a helmet

[–]Flemtality -3 points-2 points ago

As someone who hated baseball and was forced into playing for years at a young age, number 7 was pretty much me.

We should also be fair here, that was a fucking terrible throw by number 12, it looks like it landed at number 7's feet, a baseman shouldn't have to field a grounder from the pitcher to make a tag.

[–]Joke_Getter 10 points11 points ago

That's being "fair" in the Fox news definition of the word. To be "fair," the kid could have fucking moved a muscle. One muscle.

[–]hobiedallas 6 points7 points ago

The first baseman doesn't have to make a tag. And while no, he shouldn't have to field a grounder from the pitcher, he needs to be capable of fielding low throws because a huge percentage of throws from 3B/SS come off the ground.

[–]digs 1 point2 points ago

Look at where the runner 'slides' i.e. where the base is. There's no way #7 could have fielded that throw and tagged the base before the runner gets there.
