[–]justgrant2009 -2 points-1 points ago

Is there.... an Apple logo on is left arm???

Edit: No, just looks similar in one frame -

frame 30

[–]Durpadoo 2 points3 points ago

You might just be hallucinating sir...

[–]justgrant2009 1 point2 points ago

Frame 30 (I linked to it) On the inside of his left arm (the one right in the front-center of the screen) Because of the color compression on the gif, the inner most, for lack of a better term, blob of color looks like it could have been an Apple logo at a steep angle (left back, and right front plane)...

I know, it's stupid, but my computer lagged at just that frame for a split second longer than the other frames and so I only caught a glimpse of it and that's what I thought I saw. I used gif-explode and realized it wasn't though...

[–]Todomanna 2 points3 points ago

I'd like to think these gifs are mainly of black people because they tend to be the ones more likely to dance wildly in the public eye and not because of some sort of implied relationship between literacy levels and race... but my exposure to the internet leads me to believe otherwise.

[–]turtlenecking 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure it is the former, actually

[–]executex 0 points1 point ago

It's really because they dance pretty hilariously. White men don't dance, let alone in public. That's why it's funny to post gifs about them, because they dance WELL and it looks funny.

[–]tom_riddler 22 points23 points ago

Dunno I prefer this one.

[–]dragon_toes 17 points18 points ago

Aw, I was preferring that one until it decided to throw slurs at me.

Yeah sorry about that. Would be better without them.

[–]Brachial 1 point2 points ago

[–]JFMechdude 0 points1 point ago

Can I have some context on this one? WTF was Dubbya doing when this was recording?!

[–]astronoob 12 points13 points ago

WTF was Dubbya doing when this was recording?!

Sources confirm he was not reading.

[–]SedentaryLotus -2 points-1 points ago

What is the connection between dancing and not reading?

[–]8997 66 points67 points ago

Reddiquette only works when everyone plays along. You get one person to start the downvote brigade and the mob mentality takes over. For me, I find more success in having my own rules:

Vote shit up that I want to see more of (discussion, original content, good stories/jokes)
Vote shit down that that I don't want to see anymore (remove the karma incentive and people stop posting it)

Works great for me. People have gotten pissy at my "rules" in the past, but honestly, its karma. Your downvotes don't stop me.

[–]Nemokles 15 points16 points ago

The problem with this are the people who simply wants to se less of opinions they disagree with and more of opinions they agree with. Also, it's easier to make a quick joke many agree with than a substantial, informative post or argument for an opinion that many agree with. When I look at my comment history, effort, honesty and seriousness is reversely proportional to the karma score of the comment.

Now, I might be terrible at arguing my point or not knowledgable enough to provide insight on a lot of topics, but shouldn't the effort put in reward more than a quick joke? In a perfect world it would, but that's not how people work.

Hence we need to remind people of and try to get as many people as possible to follow rediquette, not because Reddit will magically be fixed and become perfect, but because it might make Reddit better. If better is the best we can get, I'll take it.

[–]8997 6 points7 points ago

Encouraging people to vote for content is a good thing. I support the reddiquette in that regard. What I do though is distance myself from believing there is a greater meaning to this entire endeavor. Maybe that's stretching it a bit but at the baseline of it all I go to Reddit to find stuff that I enjoy. If reddit stopped having enjoyable content then I wouldn't come here. My perception of what is enjoyable is entirely subjective so I can't pretend to weigh in on things that don't entertain me or pretend there's an objective formula to distribution of karma.

Like I said though, I (try to) remain level headed on the matter. If someone is posting something controversial I'll upvote them if they discuss it rationally or provide citations. I'll downvote someone shouting "I DISAGREE YOU IDIOT" regardless of what side of the debate I weigh in on. There's countless lengthy and informative posts that I upvote without reading the entirety because I knew that post was filled with effort and passion, to upvote is to encourage them to repeat the process down the line because the karma means enough to them to write it out in the first place. I play devil's advocate on more occasions than what's probably necessary because I simply want people to contribute their point of view by defending it.

Maybe the incentive of karma is a little drastic. I often help others on subreddits that fit my field of work for no gain to myself besides the feeling of helping another. Much of my responses go without any apparent recognition but I still do it. Others are like me I'm sure, but this whole discussion is a bit far from where we started.

[–]Nemokles 2 points3 points ago

Hm. This is a very interesting discussion and I think it concersn the very core of what Reddit is. Is Reddit a place for learning and discussion or is it a place for entertainment? The answer is that it's both, but people often present it as the first while if you look at the actual content there is way more of the latter. Reddit is more of a meme machine than a news aggregator. I, myself, want serious content and discussion, but which type of content do I view the most on Reddit? It's probably entertainment.

If reddit is meant for learning and disussion, Reddiquette is immensely important. If it's a place for entertainment, well, taste is really the only factor which determins what is good entertainment.

I think your position is reasonable. I take a similar approach myself. I'm just not sure if it's the right one. I think Reddit both is and can be important as a venue for discussion, simply because I see few such good venues, at least with this many users and visitors.

On the last paragraph I agree with you completely and I do the same. I comment where I think I have something to contribute, not where I can get the most karma. I think it's worth it for the few people who might read and appreciate it and the discussion it might provoke. I might learn something through participating myself and, on occasion, I've managed to convince opponents in a discussion that I have a point. No greater feeling, especially since I know how hard it is to admit to myself that I might be wrong on any given issue.

[–]BillyCheesesteak -2 points-1 points ago

Why don't you cry about it, queerface

[–]Nemokles 2 points3 points ago

Well, then it would get in the way as I kissed you, honeybuns.

[–]executex 5 points6 points ago

I'm always one hipster-step above the rest of the hivemind, through the hipster rediquette "rules":

  1. They started to upvote comments that say 'I know this will be downvoted but...'. I downvoted it.
  2. Then they started to downvote those comments and reply with mega-upvotes saying "whenever someone says 'I know this will be downvoted but...' I downvote them!". I then upvoted the comments that say 'I know this will be downvoted but...' and downvoted the replies where they explain that they will downvote that kind of comment.

I never understand why everyone's one step behind the hipster rediquette. I do the same for image-macro/meme haters now.

People shouldn't get pissy about your vote-pattern, you have a good set of rules. I want to see more good content, that's what upvoting is all about. I don't want to see people hating on others via comments due to some content-format or content-type they don't like.

[–]JoinRedditTheySaid 2 points3 points ago

Always downvote people who bitch about downvotes.

[–]executex -1 points0 points ago

Why? That's counter productive. I upvote people who bitch about downvotes, because I know people are assholes and will downvote him JUST because he complained.

I hate people that hate on people for hating something.

[–]8997 2 points3 points ago

You're right. The reasoning I see is to encourage people to vote for what they want. There's too much emphasis put on voting on what you think everyone else would want and it doesn't work like that. Hell, we've seen enough AskReddit threads about misconceptions people have among each other to know we suck ass at guessing another's preferences.

In the same vein as your comment though, nothing infuriates me more than the "Edit: Downvotes? Really?!" type post. If you post something that people don't like, why does getting upset fix that?

[–]executex -1 points0 points ago

It humanizes the poster and reminds them to reconsider for a second the value of the comment instead of irrationally downvoting it simply because it's controversial or because mob mentality is pressuring you to do so.

I've been downvoted plenty of times just by stating facts. I post 'edit: downvoted for facts', and people re-examine the comment, they see 'well damn, he did in fact just stated some facts, why are we downvoting this.' and they change their mind.

I fully support "Edit: Downvotes? Really?!" Now. When before, I didn't. People really downvote ruthlessly even when there is value in posts, JUST because it is culturally controversial, or not fully politically correct, but factually correct.

[–]TheFobb 3 points4 points ago

I only downvote things that GENUINELY don't add to a discuss. Even if I hate what they're saying.

The problem with people voting down stuff they don't agree with is that people will then be discouraged from actually discussing something, and the community will eventually become of one opinion. Very. Fuckin. Boring.

[–]8997 1 point2 points ago

Yep you're right. To say that I downvote posts that don't entertain me is not to say I downvote out of disagreement. Someone posting a rational response is often very enlightening and prevents a single minded track. The subreddits that suffer from the so-called circlejerk are mostly removed from my subscription already so I don't necessarily entertain that stuff in the first place.

[–]TheFobb 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately it has started creeping into the smaller subreddits too. All the political ones that claim to be partial namely.

You don't need to read it. Just make a reddit faux-pas and the community beats and downvotes the shit out of you. . .That'll learn ya!

And that's how little Manuel learned English on reddit.

[–]atimholt 4 points5 points ago

Manuel

Hey! No personal info! Didn’t you read the “on reddiquette” post?

[–]FamilyCanidae 7 points8 points ago

"Suck my bitch titties you jackasses."

True words of wisdom from a mature, responsible moderator.

[–]KBPrinceO -1 points0 points ago

Those words are being directed at people who are flagrantly flaunting the 'rules' of reddit. I feel that they are fair and not overly heavy-handed.

[–]MarioMetroid 1 point2 points ago

Mad to the bone

[–]KBPrinceO 1 point2 points ago

You have no idea.

My rage, it is... unfathomable.

[–]Gozdilla -1 points0 points ago

I liked it.

[–]MeLobsta 1 point2 points ago

I just glanced over your comments and pretty much all i see is "fuck you", is that all you do is criticise people?

[–]KBPrinceO -5 points-4 points ago

Nope! I've just been in a pretty shitty mood recently. You may have to dig a bit further for any worthwhile comments that I've made.

[–]MeLobsta 0 points1 point ago

ah, fair enough, i'm sure you're a nice guy...

[–]firesquasher 0 points1 point ago

A gif so funny I lol'd even on the first slowload

[–]naranjaspencer -2 points-1 points ago

True story.

[–]jimtwo -1 points0 points ago

RES tells me I've downvoted you 29 times before, so I don't doubt that reaction gif of yours for a second.

[–]kingbrofag -1 points0 points ago

Seriously, what is up with this "reddiquette" bullshit? It's nice to try to stamp out jerk off shit that people do, but the simple fact is that you cannot police bad behavior out of people, ESPECIALLY online.

[–]Idontlikecock -2 points-1 points ago

It used to work, before you came along. I have been using this site for almost 4 years now, people actually used to follow the rules before we became filled with immature 13 year olds who just got out of school for summer.

[–]kingbrofag 1 point2 points ago

Oh word bro, sorry to ruin your exclusive club. Reddit must've been great before it was popular.

[–]kingbrofag 1 point2 points ago

And I'm actually 14 bro. I can masturbate all day if i want to like a big man.

[–]Idontlikecock 0 points1 point ago

Troll. Obvious.

[–]kingbrofag 0 points1 point ago

hahaha it's fun to engage uptight faggots that take this site seriously. You are the one who should be ashamed for their ignorance. You are not special. Your beliefs, however progressive, are not shared by all. Shut the fuck up and stop asking for diversity, than lose your shit reading language, ideas, etc that you do not like.

[–]eric0rr -1 points0 points ago

He didn't read, because he couldn't read

[–]Jukepot -2 points-1 points ago

That guy gets me every time

[–]Nj_all_day -2 points-1 points ago

I downvote stuff I don't agree with. Also, I give 0 shits about karma. I will post what is on my mind, not what I think others want to see.

What are you gonna do about it? Downvote me? Hah!

[–]ImStuuuuuck -2 points-1 points ago

ok, I am currently listening to Rick James. i could combine this gif, and this music together and live a happy life forever now.
