Met two aliens. "They must be Gods!"

[–]dap_159 28 points29 points ago

This is much more accurate of the portrayal

[–]Last_Years_Villain 20 points21 points ago

They even say they're pretending to be gods.

[–]dap_159 13 points14 points ago

I don't think it was pretending as much as revered as gods

[–]DontCallMeNeilSedaka 26 points27 points ago

Yes! Humans accepted them as gods, so they just let it happen. That doesn't mean Captain America's idea of God or Iron Man's theory of no god doesn't also exist.

[–]dap_159 7 points8 points ago

My thoughts exactly, good sir.

[–]Instantcretin 1 point2 points ago

I find this really interesting. So hypothetically if "god" (the one and only, creator of heavens and earth, infallible to a T) were to come to earth and declare himself as god would we then not just claim he was something else entirely because "god" as we know it doesnt exist. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy.

[–]dap_159 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure I can wrap my head around what you just described. But what I like to think about is that these civilizations who worshiped Norse Gods had no deities until the aliens, from their home planet Asgard, visited Earth to protect mankind. At that point men saw their superhuman powers and revered them as Gods, leading to centuries of worshiping aliens as Gods. TL;DR: Origin of religion is said to come from alien contact in Marvel Universe.

There's only one God, ma'am.

And I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that.

[–]indyK1ng 11 points12 points ago

I got that reference!

[–]wahooloo 2 points3 points ago

I didn't!

[–]Dudedood 0 points1 point ago

Ha! I know! It's funny because I watched the movie too!

[–]AverageWarrior 0 points1 point ago

What movie is that?

[–]redsex 30 points31 points ago

Joke was funnier when the picture was bigger and it wasn't reposted a million times a week.

[–]TheCostume 7 points8 points ago

Big pictures are hilarious.

[–]Kage520 0 points1 point ago

I'm disappointed it took a million tries for me to finally see it.

[–]mems_account 0 points1 point ago

The one on the front page was posted 3 hours before this one. People are seriously reposting faster and faster.

[–]Wolfman87 11 points12 points ago

I thought they were aliens right? Just, you know, 100% human looking aliens with British accents.

[–]Zondraxor 0 points1 point ago

except most of those aliens don't look human. Just the Doctor and a few others.

[–]ronintetsuro 0 points1 point ago

I'm gonna be that guy and say also this.

[–]stricken123 2 points3 points ago

How many times are we going to up vote this post?

[–]Tnoel212 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't say that Hulk beat the shit out of Thor. The fight was pretty back and forth. He fucked Loki's shit right up though.

[–]DeeCipher 1 point2 points ago

repost much?

[–]fletcher720 7 points8 points ago

Had to check I wasn't looking at r/atheism...

[–]VinylWizard 3 points4 points ago

Demigods************

[–]TheArgo 2 points3 points ago

Um no, demigod is half something, half God. Neither Thor or Loki are half gods.

[–]totems 0 points1 point ago

You never go full ice giant

[–]Jombie 1 point2 points ago

But Asgardians aren't gods.

[–]xSophieCCGx 0 points1 point ago

Why Hulk is my favorite.

[–]cne9979 0 points1 point ago

Repposta!

[–]TheDoode 0 points1 point ago

Not that I care either way, but Tony Stark is atheist?

[–]go1den3ye 0 points1 point ago

I would like to interject everyone who says the Asgardians are not gods.

Yes, they are aliens, but they are also gods!

God is a MAN MADE concept, which means WE define what that includes They were revered as gods by the old nordic culture because they were immortal, had godlike powers, lived in a paradise-like world, and protected earth. THIS was enough to call, and treat them as gods. By definition, this is enough to still call them gods. They are much the same as the greek gods of old.

I would like to add that God as a concept will we an alien no matter what, because a god is "Not of this earth". and I know that they might mean god as in a 'creator', but the Asgardians (or the greek gods for that matter) were never the creators of earth, and they were still called gods.

[–]rawrc 0 points1 point ago

Yeah the Avengers 2 should have Thor VS Jesus.

[–]QuillJS 0 points1 point ago

According to the movie they are aliends, but they were actual Gods. Even though the movie portrays them wrong, considering Loki was the God of Truths no on wants to hear.

[–]JamieMeikle 0 points1 point ago

By the way the original post is here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Avengers/comments/w848q/met_two_gods/

I made the design and posted the link in the avengers category, surprisingly the original doesn't have any votes or comments.

p.s. the original tumblr post cam be found here

[–]Skaman007 -1 points0 points ago

They are not gods, they are aliens considered to be gods by the ancient nordic culture. Gods do not exist.

[–]JaronK 2 points3 points ago

Well, in the Marvel universe, they do. Turns out Jack Kirby is god (seriously, the Fantastic Four meet him).

There's also the One Above All, who's kind of like god there.

[–]LeonHRodriguez 0 points1 point ago

sure, and Mephisto/Blackheart are essentially Lucifer/Satan

[–]de1ty 0 points1 point ago

This meme is not funny.

[–]ORYG1N 0 points1 point ago

I thought I unsubscribed from r/athiesm...

[–]TunaTurner 1 point2 points ago

This post is not about atheism.

[–]MeganFoxx 0 points1 point ago

It was a top post today in r/atheism.

[–]Feinberg 1 point2 points ago

Still not about atheism.

[–]macarattack -3 points-2 points ago

Met Black Widow; chokes her

[–]HiImTed -4 points-3 points ago

Actually in the movie, Captain America says that only one god exists and he doesn't dress like that.

[–]NerftheSnow -1 points0 points ago

Why did you post a smaller version of the pic that was on the frontpage or r/atheism yesterday?

[–]Ragnalypse -4 points-3 points ago

Not really fair to call the Norse gods such. I'm not sure how the comics approach it, but the Norse gods were basically normal people, some abnormally good at fighting or wiser than humans.

[–]Aspel 2 points3 points ago

If you consider immortality, godlike power, cheating death on multiple occasions, and holding the powers of nature at your beck and call basically normal, sure.

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

They don't age because of magical apples someone grows for them - they can be killed though.

Their "power" is almost exclusively due to Seiðr, which the Norse believed humans posessed equally, or shapeshifting by someone with some non-aesir blood. As per "nature" I'll assume you refer to Mjolnir's power, which was a tool made by dwarves.

[–]Aspel 0 points1 point ago

They can allegedly be killed, but they still cheat death on a regular basis.

They're not just normal humans. They talk to animals, for fucks sake. And Thor is still powerful without Mjolnir, and I don't think I've ever seen it said that he can only control thunder with his hammer. More than that, Odin is all powerful and knows all spells at max level. Whether humans have Seidhr or not, the Aesir have it in spades and at levels that far surpass what mortals can achieve.

Nevermind that even without overt displays of power, the world of the Aesir is ruled more magical realism than a Coen Brothers film.

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

Thor literally has no powers without Mjolnir, besides being strong. It's explained that the sound of thunder is Mjolnir clashing against enemies. The whole lightning thing is a comic-book nerd evolution, not part of the mythology. The word Mjolnir means "crusher," and the confusion about lightning coming into the picture is only because the Norse used the same word for Lightning as Thunder.

Sigurd, the one who was talking to birds, was a human man. A badass who fought a dragon, but a man.

"knows all spells at max level" Even the gods lack true power with magic. Much like how real life "users" of magic can't achieve any practical ends with their "powers," Odin didn't use a single spell to fight Fenrir. He used a spear.

As per cheating death, Norse heroes do so just as much. Stories tend to have characters narrowly avoiding death. This should not be new to you.

[–]coprolite_hobbyist 1 point2 points ago

Have you read the Eddas?

[–]indyK1ng 0 points1 point ago

I think in the comics they are literally gods. The aliens approach was done to fit Thor in with the cinematic universe which takes a much more grounded in reality/hard sci-fi approach to things.

[–]bigkax 0 points1 point ago

He's an alien because he's from another realm, that doesn't mean he's not a god... The Humans call him an alien because is easier to accept him as such without question their faith in the Abrahamic god and admit that they may be wrong in worshiping him.

[–]Forkyou 0 points1 point ago

well if you compare it to other religions the word god is fitting. Die Asen or the aesir as it is in english i believe had a mythologie comparable to the greek, roman or egyptian one

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

What about them is greater than a normal human?

[–]Forkyou 3 points4 points ago

the shooting lightning, fighting wolves that are big enough to eat the moon, giving birth to eight legged horses and the whole magic thing oO

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

All with tools. Thor has no power over lightning, in fact Mjolnir simply makes the sound of thunder through fighting. Odin fights Fenrir using Gungnir, a spear described as so well balanced that it could strike anyone regardless of the user's skill - crafted by dwarves just as Mjolnir was.

Loki is half jötunn, which does make him super-human. Otherwise, the Aesir are basically just people.

[–]Forkyou 1 point2 points ago

what about making someone invulnerable against every object (forgetting viscum) and of course beeing worshipped and getting sacrifices. you could argue Zeus can only shoot lighting because of his spear. thats just the way polytheism works. its a lot more like that for the aesir but comparing it to other old polytheistic religions i think the word god is fitting.

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

  1. A norse god did that by asking nicely, not through any abnormal power.

  2. Greek Gods had magical powers of perception and/or power humans lacked, in addition to being naturally immortal. Kick one in the face with your energy legs? He's alive.

[–]Forkyou 0 points1 point ago

i see your point still god seems the most apporpriate term for them if you want to expand the word like that. you called them "norse god" yourself. its a bit of generalisation but in the end there never was a norse mythology for everyone so the depiction of the aesir may have been different from region to region.

[–]Aspel 0 points1 point ago

Uh... no. Also, how is your name a Norse reference and you don't realize Odin has power over magic?

Or the fact that they, you know, created life?

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

Seiðr was something anyone could practice, although Odin was mocked for it.

Creating life could easily fall under seiðr.

0/6, keep trying.

[–]Feinberg -1 points0 points ago

Odin nailed his own head to a tree.
