the title is stupid. You can be a christian without thinking that the bible is proof for god existing! The key word is faith; you have faith that god exists because its what you choose to believe. The bible is interpreted in many ways, often in fundamentally contradictory ways, by a lot of people. But any self respecting christian knows that the bible isnt proof for anything. its just a book which lays out some moral guidelines by which to live your life. Another key word here is christian- that should be a picture of the new testament if you're talking about christianity. The new testament is the one less littered with violence towards humanity for those who haven't read it. The bible isn't proof- its a set of ideas which some people live their lives by. Faith in god is another thing altogether.

Isn't it at all possible that a Christian might be poking fun at himself?

I know plenty of Christians who emphasize that their faith is just that, FAITH, and that there is no incontrovertible "proof" of god's existence, in the Bible or anywhere else. They base their belief on their own gut feeling that there is some higher power, and on the strength and comfort that their religion has given them.

Not all Christians are evangelical. I would venture to say that most aren't. While I don't support blind faith just because it's what's "normal" in large parts of society, I also don't think it's reasonable or rational to paint all Christians with the same broad strokes.

He might not think the bible is proof of god, but still believe. My biology textbook is not proof of anything, the proof is out there . . . your friend might have a similar view of god. Not saying this is the case but I cannot rule it out based on the information given.

What proof is there that the bible is not a fictional text? (Seriously, I have never found any evidence, but if anyone has factual information on the bible, it's atheists)

Writing styles change dramatically in even a few decades, the stardard bilbical style could of been a style of fiction. what other examples of text do we have from the same era that are known to be fiction and non-fiction?
