What some kinds of snake venom do to blood

FTFY

[–]michaelpaulhartman 197 points198 points ago

Not all snake venom is the same, you say? TIL.

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 374 points375 points ago

Some attack nerve synapses, neurotoxic, which paralyze you by either causing too much muscle stimulation or not enough, both lead to death from respiratory failure(diaphragm). Some of these work by blocking receptors, but some work by actually dissolving the end of the nerve!

Some are hemotoxic, they attack the blood, causing coagulopathies, or problems with clotting.

Most are on some level, cytotoxic, they attack the cells, usually causing the cells to break open, spilling their guts out into the interstitial fluid, causing inflammation, swelling, etc. Massive cell death can cause hyperkalemia, or too much potassium in the blood, because the cell contains most of the body's potassium, which is very deadly when at high levels in the blood, because it messes with the cardiac electrical cycle, leading to cardiac arrhythmia(irregular beating), and death.

edit: spelling

[–]Jestified 97 points98 points ago

A professor at the uni I attend has one of the worlds largest snake collections, supposedly one of the snake's venom dissolves all scar tissue in your body so old wounds re-open.

I don't know if this is actual truth or not. (the venom part)

Edit: Turns out the informant that told me this was FULL OF SHIT.

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 107 points108 points ago

Definitely not true.

Scar tissue is really no different from any other skin tissue. The only thing that makes scar tissue different, is that the collagen fibers are arranged more uniformly, instead of randomly like in regular skin tissue.

[–][deleted] 80 points81 points ago

Scar tissue is more "perfect" than regular skin? Looks like I have a new weekend project.

[–]ponchosuperstar 41 points42 points ago

What does this even mean

[–]FiveChairs 103 points104 points ago

He's going to cut himself new skin.

[–]Ziczak 32 points33 points ago

It rubs the lotion on its skin...

[–]Level_75_Zapdos 15 points16 points ago

Let's just say that his dick will be sore for a while.

[–]Noobleton 14 points15 points ago

A regular Friday, then.

[–]cole1114 2 points3 points ago

He's going to slowly carve all his skin off and let it form scars.

[–]mendozah92 2 points3 points ago

You'll know when you see what's left of him in an /r/wtf post

[–]MrPee123 1 point2 points ago

Basil ... really

[–]TheMightyAdzilla 3 points4 points ago

I'm pretty sure the fact that all the collagen is arranged in the same way reduces the elasticity of the skin, making the skin definitely less perfect...

[–]Jestified 7 points8 points ago

Thanks for the info my good sir

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 21 points22 points ago

You are welcome my good sir.

Spread the science!

I'm off!

[–]Pit_of_Death 6 points7 points ago

I've learned quite a bit from you tonight, good sir! You are truly a science hero of Reddit. I shall watch you depart with a heavy heart.

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 23 points24 points ago

I'm not really leaving. I live here.

[–]ricky1030 18 points19 points ago

TIL Alexander_X_Blake is Trapped_In_Reddit.

[–]Sir_Cut 1 point2 points ago

Let's make something clear, epithelial tissue =/= connective tissue.

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 1 point2 points ago

Did I say that?

[–]eloisekelly 1 point2 points ago

Is that why all my scars appear to have little lines across the width of them?

EDIT: Obligatory picture. Like this.

[–]67josh 16 points17 points ago

Fucking circumcision

[–]Jestified 17 points18 points ago

And here we see the great one eyed snake spitting red venom

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Jestified 1 point2 points ago

Well now I know! Thanks!

[–]mambotomato 1 point2 points ago

This is a plot device in Blade of the Immortal, though... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_of_the_Immortal

[–]AQuizzicalLad 1 point2 points ago

This is the kind of Information that makes me want to pursue a science-based degree, thank you for the knowledge sir!

[–]ThickPiss 4 points5 points ago

Save a fortune and head on over the wikipedia...or just stay in reddit, there's cats and boobs

[–]VerySpecialK 1 point2 points ago

It's science.

[–]Kaboose1442 1 point2 points ago

You are now tagged as "The snake whisperer"

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 1 point2 points ago

I don't really have a specialty in snakes or anything. It was just information that I learned during my anatomy and physiology courses.

Thanks though :P

[–]nitefang 9 points10 points ago

No, some kill tissue, some are a coagulant, I think there are others but I really don't know what they are.

[–]tblackwood 29 points30 points ago

In the original post yesterday (of the full video this GIF came from that made Front), a guy broke it down. I believe he said there are three principle types: I think they were neurotoxins, hemotoxins, and cytoagulatoxins or some shit close to that. One effects tissue (or muscles or something), one blood, and the other one cognitive function. Anyways, I was tired and don't remember specifics.

EDIT: I got unlazyafied, and found it:

http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/wdtg0/this_is_what_snake_venom_does_to_blood/c5cjytw

[–]Davey_Jones 4 points5 points ago

Which is worse? By worse I mean the most damaging within the shortest amount of time i suppose. They all suck.

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 18 points19 points ago

Neurotoxic by far. You will not be able to breathe, and you will die unless someone breathes for you. The liver can usually process the toxin without a problem, but the only problem is that you will die first if you are not having someone breathe for you, or if you are not hooked up to a ventilator.

This is why whenever I hike with someone, I carry a CPR Mask or if there are multiple people, I carry a micro BVM.

[–]jordan314 3 points4 points ago

What else do you recommend hiking with? Thanks.

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 28 points29 points ago

Water and salty, starchy foods.

I live in Southern Arizona, and every year, multiple people die from hyponatremia, low levels of sodium in the blood.

The problem is, they bring plenty of water, but they hike for 3 hours in the summer, and in 3 hours, you can lose 6 liters of fluid, not just from sweating, but just from your lungs as well.

They drink adequate fluid, but they can be losing 1-3 grams of sodium per liter of sweat. Sodium levels in the blood drop, the cerebral spinal fluid has a bit more sodium now, and because sodium makes up most of the osmotic pressure in the blood, and because water will follow solutes, water will rush to the cerebral spinal fluid, causing cerebral edema. Your brain swells, and has no more room to expand into, so you die. Sometimes parts of the brain will even be squeezed out of your skull through the foramen magnum. Very bad indeed.

But salt isn't all, you can't just take a salt tablet, those are ineffective.

The sodium transporters require something else, they require glucose to function. These transporters move sodium and glucose, usually in opposite directions. You cannot move glucose without sodium and you cannot move sodium without glucose.

So you need to eat something that has starch and salt. The perfect snack is pretzels. They have lots of salt and lots of starch.

Also, sports drinks will NOT work. Sports drinks are fine if you want to rehydrate, or get your sugar levels up, but they will NOT replace ELECTROLYTES FAST ENOUGH.

[–]jordan314 5 points6 points ago

Thanks!

[–]Alexander_X_Blake 12 points13 points ago

You're welcome.

Some other things would be to have a good medical kit prepared with bandages, lots of roller gauze so that you can stabilize an impaled object if necessary, tweezers, triangular bandages, etc.

Also, a good quality knife, a fire starter, a cell phone, a signal mirror, a good quality flashlight, preferrably one with a SOS or Strobe setting, even if you're going out in the day only.

I also carry a firearm with me usually when I hike, but some people might not be comfortable with that. I carry a Glock 20.

The biggest thing, is good training. I really recommend that everyone take a basic first aid course, and a good wilderness first aid course.

I tend to think of the medical aspect a lot because I'm an EMT, but a lot of the skills that I learned in EMT school can be learned by the general public in a good wilderness first aid class. If you're interested in taking those, check with your red cross, they are usually very reasonably priced.

[–]tblackwood 6 points7 points ago

Here's a list of the "Top 10 Most Venomous Snakes" (although I'm not sure how accurate it is):

http://listverse.com/2011/03/30/top-10-most-venomous-snakes/

Here's the number 1 on that list's wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrophis_belcheri

Although in it's own wikipedia article, they reference you to this snake (number 2 on the first list) as being the most toxic:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxyuranus_microlepidotus

Which has primarily neurotoxins in its venom.

In regards to your question, it sounds like neurotoxins has the potential to be the deadliest, when all of the venomous snakes in the world are taken into account. However, you did not specify deadliest, but rather asked which is worse. By my own personal measure of worseiness, the cytotoxin would top the list. This is because even if you do survive it, you may still lose a limb -- which I'm adverse to. I guess I classify it as the worst because even its best case scenario sucks.

[–]JBagginsOfTheShire 2 points3 points ago

Here's a fun little list I just found looking up the same thing, which makes me SO happy to live in Australia! www.avru.org/general/general_mostvenom.html

[–]bearXential 4 points5 points ago

Top 11 Most venomous snakes in the world are all in Australia!

Aussie!

Aussie!

[–]Anbaraen 3 points4 points ago

Oi! Oi! Oi!

Yeah, but at least we don't have bears wandering through our suburbs like I saw in California the other day. Seriously. A gigantic freaking bear, hitting someone's letterbox. What is that.

[–]kushmau5 5 points6 points ago

May I argue that a bear is a big ass beast I can see from a couple yards away..in most circumstances?

[–]diehabitat 2 points3 points ago

Which kind of snake's venom actually congeals blood? Sounds like some crazy voodoo.

[–]K4ge 2 points3 points ago

[–]Unicyclone 122 points123 points ago

Sheeit, that's nasty. Looks like a fucking heart sliding out of the cup.

FTFY. Gotta keep it clean for the kids in here.

[–]PhilxBefore 5 points6 points ago

[–]djslim21 1 point2 points ago

That's not relevant, it's referential. Still upvoted cuz I hadn't seen it.

[–]Rather_Dashing 17 points18 points ago

I'd like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that I once woke in the middle of the night to find a snake at the foot of my bed. My cat was playing with it, although she didn't bring it in, it came in of it's own accord. Australia.

[–]notcoolbrooo 4 points5 points ago

WHAT THE FUCK DUDE. How did it get in? Did you get it back out somehow? Was it aggressive?

You can't start a story like that and not finish it, it's downright selfish.

[–]Rather_Dashing 11 points12 points ago

Well, it was actually quite a small snake, its width at the widest was probably only that of my thumb, its possible that it squeezed in somewhere, or came in during the day when a door was left open. It wasn't aggressive, it was writhing around when my cat was playing with it so I pulled her away a threw a sweater over it and it stayed put. I took it outside but it was quite difficult, I mean, you can't really just pick up a snake can you. I can't remember exactly how I got it outside, but it involved a large plastic container/crate. I dumped the jumper outside and it slithered away allowing me to retrieve the jumper.

It's not the only time my cat-with-a-death-wish has attacked a snake either. Once I found her chasing one of dangerously venomous fuckers and had to chase after her to pull her away. Another time I found her fighting with what I think was a baby of the same species. For the few seconds before I pulled my cat away their fight was pretty awesome, with my cat swiping and the snake trying to strike.

Come to Australia we have beaches and koalas!

EDIT: I should also add, the snake was initially in my brothers room. When he saw it, he opened the door, let it out, then closed his door and went back to bed. Thanks, asshole.

[–]notcoolbrooo 2 points3 points ago

Oh my...OP... OP, delivered.

Thank you Rather_Dashing for taking the time to answer all my questions and give us an in-depth to that story.

And your cat sounds awesome! But snakes are on my top 10 nope list. But dear god, how do you live with the possibility of running into snakes every day you go outside? I would implode.

[–]Rather_Dashing 1 point2 points ago

Actually, I don't think I would be aware of most of the reptilian fauna that is in my backyard if it wasn't for the cat, she's very good at finding them. Apart from the snakes my cat has provoked, I've only seen wild snakes a few times, once was a large green snake in our pool, once on a bushwalk and another near a wildlife park. Its still pretty rare to encounter a snake and all the ones I've seen are not aggressive, they just run (um slither quickly?) away.

[–]full_on_derp 2 points3 points ago

On a floating prison.

Where every animal has a method of delivering lethal neurotoxins.

Humanity's only hope.

...and her cat.

Meowtback: The Movie

[–]notcoolbrooo 1 point2 points ago

I see, I was always told most snakes were non-aggressive. But living in Indiana I've only ever seen them dead on side roads or in a cage at a zoo... (All rattlesnakes too).

Still scares the life out of me.

[–]gkow 1 point2 points ago

Looks like he died. RIP. 7/13 Never forget.

[–]spgtothemax 8 points9 points ago

Exscuse me sir, but your post is upside down.

[–]Rather_Dashing 4 points5 points ago

It's ma'am, and it's your post which is upside down.

[–]jpthehp 65 points66 points ago

[–]eternalkerri 1 point2 points ago

Well, thats only slightly unsettling.

[–]Xtra1-0 151 points152 points ago

Who puts blood in a wine glass like Dracula?

[–]lavacat 191 points192 points ago

Every other vampire on earth who has an ounce of class.

[–]Alt0173 8 points9 points ago

Ounce of blood?

[–]lavacat 10 points11 points ago

No, the ounce of blood is only classy in a wine glass.

[–]jimmytheone45 14 points15 points ago

...Dracula?

[–]wolfvision 1 point2 points ago

Doubt it

[–]IrregularRunner 1 point2 points ago

OP is referring to a popular TV show "Scrubs" where the main character wrote a play called Dr. Acula. You see, in Sacred Heart, they do blood transfusions differently - recession has hit the hospital hard and they need to resort to using wine glasses from the cafeteria to transport the blood from patient to patient.

[–]HalcyonCross 4 points5 points ago

What is a man?

[–]CNDNFighter 84 points85 points ago

Only SOME snake venom does this. From what I understand, I believe there are 4 main types of venom you will find in snakes around the world.

-Hemotoxic (Like this one, affecting the blood. Found in most pit vipers i.e. rattlesnakes among many others)

-Neurotoxic (Affects brain tissue and found mostly in family elapidae. i.e. cobras, coral snakes, tai pans and many others. frequently more harmful, the Elapids are often considered...how do I put this.....The ones you don't want to fuck with)

-Myotoxic (Affects and breaks down muscle tissue. More rare and found in the very deadly sea snakes of the world. I can't imagine melting from the inside out would be too pleasant)

-Cytotoxic (Affects celluar structure and can cause cells to lyse themselves. essentially, explode. Also more rare and found in sea snakes)

Some of course will have a mish-mash of the above in varying ratios and quantities. The Mojave rattlesnake is widely considered the deadliest of the North American snakes and it is of note for having such an assortment of toxins. So, if you live in the Southwest US, try not to get bitten by a Mojave Rattler.

I work with animals for a living but more so in close quarters with large cats than with reptilians and herpitlies so if anybody is more of an expert on the subject than myself, please chime in.

[–]notarapist72 7 points8 points ago

that doesn't sound pleasant.

[–]pamin1 4 points5 points ago

I'm just curious, what do you do?

[–]CNDNFighter 8 points9 points ago

Have spent the past 10 years working in close quarters with large cats and other exotics. Have done some training and a whole lot of large cat enrichment. As well, I've been the director of a camp taking place at the zoo that allows kids to get into contact and learn about these animals. I can inbox you some pictures if you are interested?

[–]pamin1 2 points3 points ago

That sounds pretty awesome. Yeah, pics would be cool!

[–]rachel_em 14 points15 points ago

Yeah, inbox you some pics of his pet python IFYOUKNOWWHATIMEAN

[–]willienelsonmandela 3 points4 points ago

Oh thank god only SOME snake venom does that. Let me just look at what the other types of venom do....

MOTHER OF GOD!

[–]redferret867 2 points3 points ago

I learned all of this from Jeff Corwin (I think) because I was addicted to Animal Planet and History Channel all during grade school (6-12 years ago when they didnt suck). He and Steve Irwin made me want to be a herpetologist for years.

[–]CNDNFighter 7 points8 points ago

Steve Irwin's death remains do this day, the only celebrity death that has ever affected me on a deep, emotional level.

I used to, and still do idolize the shit out of that man.

I got to meet Jeff Corwin a while back and he is a really cool and very knowledgable guy. For some reason he just doesn't have the same mystique to me as Steven Irwin did.

The fact that you know something like this speaks to the quality of their ability to impart knowledge in an easy manner.

[–]redferret867 1 point2 points ago

they were two of the most formative people during my childhood. They taught me how to love learning, and what a good teacher is.

[–]QWOPtain 1 point2 points ago

I don't usually get upset when people make fun of celebrity deaths. Hell, I join in.

But when people were bashing Steve Irwin, it reached inside of me and put a stranglehold on my insides, and I wanted to go ham on those monkeys.

[–]CNDNFighter 1 point2 points ago

When somebody pokes fun at Steve Irwin, I feel as though they are kicking me in the balls and spitting on my face

[–]tonkey 2 points3 points ago

Well, I'm never swimming again... ever...

[–]CNDNFighter 1 point2 points ago

HOORAY FOR TERRIFYING LOOKING ANIMALS!!!

http://flatrock.org.nz/static/frontpage/assets/animals/rock_python2.jpg

I present to you, the reticulated python (this one is dead...aaannnd it might actually be a rock python), the longest snake in the world.

[–]tonkey 1 point2 points ago

Oh, its dead. That's okay with me.

[–]extempest 1 point2 points ago

Can we have a video for all these 4 types of venoms?

[–]greywolf2155 1 point2 points ago

Heh you only have 30 points, whereas the dude who just said "'What some kinds of snake venom do to blood' FTFY" is the top comment? Man . . .

[–]boossaa 5 points6 points ago

Came for the Thing reference. 10/10. Would watch again.

[–]CheeseBurrito 70 points71 points ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the work of a hemotoxin.

I believe the condition is known as Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.

This shit will fuck you up real nice if you can't get yourself to a hospital.

[–]SnoopyDoggyDogg 105 points106 points ago

Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.

Yeah I was going to say that.

[–]ChemicalRascal 20 points21 points ago

Right on the tip of my tongue, it was.

[–]Genmaken 3 points4 points ago

Your forked tongue?

[–]P1NGU 1 point2 points ago

Nice try, ChimicalRascal, you snake in the grass.

[–]ikokjones 2 points3 points ago

Yes, sucks to have DIC.

[–]Kaboose1442 1 point2 points ago

I just had to figure out how to type it first.

[–]bgb111 38 points39 points ago

I know some of these words.

[–]captionUnderstanding 7 points8 points ago

All but 4 of them, I hope.

[–]lemon_jello 8 points9 points ago

Excuse my ignorance but how on earth does anyone live for a second with blood like that? Even if you were IN the hospital when you got bitten, it's astounding that something can be done to rectify the problem.

[–]Coeliac 4 points5 points ago

The video is not in real time- it doesn't take 2 swishes and also the blood in the picture is exposed to air which assists in clotting.

[–]ChemicalRascal 7 points8 points ago

Blood transfusions are a wonderful thing. Also, anti-venom.

[–]spider2544 1 point2 points ago

Stuff looks likeliquid heart attack.

I wonder if that could be used to stop bleeding quickly on a major wound

[–]Fuzzy_Butthole 27 points28 points ago

That's - that's bad, right?

[–]DubiumGuy 21 points22 points ago

Actually that particular snake venom only does that to rodent blood. It does the opposite to Human blood and makes it far thinner. Thin enough to that it leaks from every orifice. Basically it leaks from your eyeballs as you shit blood whilst dying.

You can see the show its taken from here.

[–]tonkey 6 points7 points ago

...I... This... Why.

[–]nomofica 9 points10 points ago

It's worth noting that most snake venoms are anticoagulants, which produces the exact opposite effect that's in the gif. It also takes much longer to take effect as blood does not get as oxidized as it would being swirled around in a cup.

[–]spagnitz 16 points17 points ago

or the andromeda strain

[–]gm4 6 points7 points ago

God reddit is such a whore sometimes, all you do is make a gif of the video from like what, last night? Earlier today? fucking jesus

[–]Kuusou 2 points3 points ago

How is it that that someone can just make a gif from a video that was front page last night, and they get upvoted. Reddits memory is that of a small child.

[–]Pants_R_Overatd 2 points3 points ago

I wonder what this feels like.

And yes, the video version of this .gif has been posted non-stop recently.

[–]DoctorMcN1nja 6 points7 points ago

Note to self: when vampirism becomes a thing, breed snakes and sell Hemoglobiscuits.

[–]supergcha 8 points9 points ago

This is the happiest day of my fake internet life.

[–]footcreamfin 59 points60 points ago

but its a gif now!

[–]DrewPWiener 251 points252 points ago

First time I'm seeing it.

[–]Gimmemormuny 43 points44 points ago

Same, probably because not everyone subscribes to videos, I know I don't because I'm too lazy to watch videos, but some people cannot because of where they browse reddit.

[–]SelcouthBadger 21 points22 points ago

I browse almost exclusively on Alien Blue, so it's kinda a bitch to view videos on 3G and iPhone in general.

[–]gkow 8 points9 points ago

Same here! Are we friends now? Can we please be friends?

[–]Gimmemormuny 1 point2 points ago

A friendship to last the ages.

[–]allholy1 2 points3 points ago

i usually catch all posts that are above about 1k.... but how do i manage to miss stuff like this? I'm on /r/all. I don't get it.

[–]Dojinsan 3 points4 points ago

Yup, it was posted on Joe Rogans twitter.

[–]Tinctorius 3 points4 points ago

Some people think they can outsmart Redditors. Maybe...

*sniff* maybe...

I have yet to meet one that can outsmart KarmaDecay.

[–]PatAunces 9 points10 points ago

Yes, it's called a crosspost, try to keep up. You've been here a year and a half, you should know that not everyone subscribes to the same subreddits.

[–]Metarract 2 points3 points ago

Yes, I am well aware of that; thank you. While I am not sure of OP's intentions, I (for the most part) wanted to give credit where credit is due. Whether OP was spreading knowledge of the information or just hopping on the greasy karma gravy train, I cannot say. Though, I am more likely to believe the latter, given the rather large volume that this particular redditor posts.

[–]DrunkenRedditing 4 points5 points ago

If you're looking to give credit where it's due, link to the video on YouTube, not the Reddit post.

In addition to not being a typical "HOLY SHIT THIS IS A REPOST!" commenter, you're giving those who want to see the original video a chance to view it.

[–]LAR0311 2 points3 points ago

I'm not usually one for the repost complaining, but it was on the frontpage yesterday!

[–]psychroclasm 1 point2 points ago

A grand total of 11 times. In TWO days.

[–]01and10 19 points20 points ago

this kills the blood

[–]bstormy 13 points14 points ago

this kills you

[–]cerpintaxt64 2 points3 points ago

Im pretty sure that the blood does this without venom. You know, coagulation.

[–]EKcore 2 points3 points ago

Reddit it's happening again.....

Take front page videos and make them a .gif to get to the front page.

[–]zeroair 4 points5 points ago

Snake venom. Not even once.

[–]guignoleyes 12 points13 points ago

Having your blood turn into jello isn't normal. But on snake venom it is.

[–]JayDee240 7 points8 points ago

I should start making gifs of all the front page videos on /r/videos. It seems to be a successful way to get karma. Has anyone made a "that's a big ass shark" gif yet?

[–]ttpd 1 point2 points ago

I haven't seen one yet! Would upvote!

[–]DeFeet 10 points11 points ago

I'm freaking out right now! I think there is a snake in my house. I have no reason to think so, I'm just paranoid that it's going to turn my blood into jello and I need to be prepared!

[–]just_took_a_bong_hit 24 points25 points ago

Chill, bro.

[–]csonnich 25 points26 points ago

Don't listen to him. He just took a bong hit. Panic! Panic now!

[–]lavacat 10 points11 points ago

Ooooh, drink a ton of vodka right now...after you get bitten, the rest of us can have jello shots!

[–]PossiblyAnEngineer 7 points8 points ago

To be fair, 1/5 people have a snake in their house every year, and don't even know it. Also helps to know that only 1/3 snakes have venom capable of doing this to your blood! You can sleep relatively safe knowing that you have at least a 1/15 chance of having a snake capable of doing this pass by your house this year!

[–]DeFeet 13 points14 points ago

STOP HELPING!

Wonder where the wine glass of blood came from. Who's blood is that?!

[–]tony1238 1 point2 points ago

I was bit by a pit viper when I was nine, I did not receive medical attention for 24 hrs ( living in Saudi Arabia '74 )...had to fly to American Hospital in Beirut, 3 weeks in ICU, complete blood transfusion...

[–]maximumdoodoo 2 points3 points ago

Any long term effects from this?

[–]tony1238 1 point2 points ago

no...pretty normal since...always a bit curious as to whose blood I received and if that affects anything ie.- immunities, characteristics, health...but, I do love hummus.

[–]Allenr912 1 point2 points ago

Even if this was posted in /r/videos, thanks for posting here. I won't be able to view youtube for another month or so and this was interesting.

[–]sandely65 1 point2 points ago

Get that guy some Coumadin! (medical humor :D)

[–]Mr_robasaurus 1 point2 points ago

So this is what we do now? We take videos from a few days ago and turn them into gifs and repost?

[–]Danielthebeastibarra 1 point2 points ago

My professor in med school showed us this and we all to explain how this happens on molecular level, everybody had a "fuck this I'll be a waiter/waitress".

[–]Missionblack 1 point2 points ago

For the impatient people who couldn't watch the whole YouTube video.

[–]DontSayAlot 1 point2 points ago

So what you're saying is that there's a slithering muscle with teeth that can literally stop my blood flow by turning it into gel? That's genuinely terrifying.

Though I do love the lack of anything terrifying here in Virginia. Not the fucking Amazon or something.

[–]To_serve_and_protect 1 point2 points ago

I call bullshit.

This gif is improperly labeled. The snake venoms that affect blood (haemotoxins) cause the exact opposite of what is going on here, in that they prevent blood clotting. They have an anticoagulant property and cause internal bleeding through destruction of the blood vessels and lack of clotting action in the blood itself.

Edited for spelling.

[–]OrangeSimply 1 point2 points ago

What taking a video that was posted a couple days ago and turning it into a .gif repost looks like.

[–]CruelMaple 1 point2 points ago

  1. Video from front page
  2. Turn into gif
  3. Profit!

[–]derp111 2 points3 points ago

Anyone else just wanna take a bite out of that blob?

[–]mrjmf 1 point2 points ago

YES!!!

[–]PoisonSnow 1 point2 points ago

I think the video is a bit misleading however. The blood curls in snake venom, yes, and this much is portrayed, but if one were to put blood in the same glass and mix it as the man did in the video, the blood would churn into the blob after a few minutes regardless of whether or not there was venom mixed into it. Granted, it would take a LOT longer.

A new era of reposting: turning recently posted videos into gifs

[–]ThatCrankyGuy 9 points10 points ago

Go fuck yourself man. Sheesh, seriously, some of us aren't logged on 24/7 and/or don't really click on videos.

[–]mrjmf 4 points5 points ago

i have perhaps the worst internet connection ever and I pray for gifs. YouTube? Never saw it.

[–]Eal12333 1 point2 points ago

For me, YouTube loads much faster than GIFs.

[–]NoIdeasOriginal 0 points1 point ago

Damn, why does this bother me so much? I have no clue what's really happening to the blood. Yet I feel a crazy amount of anxiety after having watched that .gif only twice.
